Happy Monday, everyone! To celebrate the start of the working week, we're looking at Star Trek episodes where people mess with the memories of our cast and put them through menial, awful work.O'Brien must continue to suffer in Hard Time, where he's lived through decades of prison time just for being a bit nosey. Can he deal with the mind-shattering prison sentence, or will he still be traumatised and we'll never speak of this after the episode's end? Then our main feature is a two-parter where the crew of Voyager are brainwashed into factory jobs (apart from Paris who couldn't even manage that). Many behavior problems are rooted in stress, confusion, fear, frustration, or overstimulation, not stubbornness or “bad” behavior. Owners often misread what their dogs are actually communicating. This week the crew deals with sick kids, travel chaos, and kitten catastrophes before diving into ancient supervolcanoes, bizarre retro coding experiments, and a deeply unsettling sci-fi moral dilemma inspired by Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Real Life Steven's week turned into a strange mix of California road trips, tactical miniatures combat, and disease management. Devon came out for a visit, which meant plenty of hanging out, board games, and attempts to squeeze hobby time into an already overloaded week. Steven got to play some Robo Rally with Greg and Robert, along with trying out Let's Dig for Treasure, a game whose title sounds wholesome but absolutely invites goblin behavior. Meanwhile, Steven continued the noble quest of teaching Star Wars: Shatterpoint to Devon while Ben allegedly "rested," which is apparently code for strategically avoiding rules explanations and measuring tools. Steven also spent another week in solo dad mode, which became significantly harder once kid sickness entered the arena and started critting morale checks. Ben, meanwhile, remains trapped in the ongoing kitten saga. The kittens continue producing biological surprises at an industrial pace, while Ben contemplates the eternal debate between older gaming hardware and modern VR technology. Specifically: the Wii may have looked ridiculous, but at least it wasn't trying to strangle your family with cords every time somebody turned around. According to Ben, the Wii was "for moms," which honestly may have been Nintendo's most successful market strategy ever. Devon was not present for this segment because he was likely somewhere over the western United States eating airport pretzels and regretting flight delays. Future or Now Ben descended into the strange and fascinating world of the demoscene with "Wake Up, Neo," a tiny 16-byte x86 program capable of turning cascading Matrix-style code into sound. Yes: sixteen bytes. Not sixteen kilobytes. Sixteen actual bytes. The conversation spiraled into appreciation for the demoscene itself — a long-running culture of programmers creating absurdly impressive audiovisual experiments under ridiculous technical limitations. "Wake Up, Neo" writeup: Wake Up, Neo Demoscene overview: Demoscene Wikipedia Page Steven brought humanity to the brink of extinction with the story of the Toba supereruption. Scientists believe the eruption may have darkened skies and cooled the planet so severely that early human populations nearly collapsed. But newer archaeological evidence suggests humans may have been far more adaptable than previously believed. Instead of folding under pressure, ancient communities appear to have shifted strategies, developed new tools, and survived conditions that should have wiped them out. In other words: humanity's greatest evolutionary trait may not be intelligence, strength, or speed — it may simply be the stubborn refusal to quit. ScienceDaily article: Toba Supereruption Research Devon once again contributed by existing somewhere inside the airline system. "Big Question" This week's Big Question was deeply uncomfortable in exactly the way a good science fiction premise should be: Would you rather have actually killed someone and have absolutely no memory of it… or have vivid memories of killing someone when it never actually happened and could never be proven true? Ben immediately pointed out the horrifying lack of control involved in the first option. Somewhere out there, a terrible thing happened, and you were responsible for it without even knowing. That uncertainty alone could eat someone alive. Steven argued the second option might actually be worse for him personally. Even if the memory were false, the emotional weight would still feel real. Guilt doesn't necessarily care whether something objectively happened. If your brain fully believes you murdered someone, your nervous system probably isn't going to politely wait for evidence before spiraling. The conversation naturally drifted into Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and the famous episode Hard Time, where Chief O'Brien receives implanted prison memories so traumatic they permanently alter him psychologically. Episode reference: Hard Time (DS9) It turns out fake trauma may still just be… trauma. Which is a pretty bleak realization for a podcast episode that also contained kitten poop discussions. Today we're hanging out with the legendary Anjelah Johnson-Reyes. You've seen her viral "Nail Salon" bit and her iconic characters from Mad TV, but in this episode, we get into the nuts and bolts of her career and life as a mom. Anjelah shares her fascinating process for building a comedy hour, from recording every set to "cut the fat" to the daunting anxiety of starting a project from scratch. We dive into her self-produced special, Ugly Baby, and how she "sleuthed" her own audio archives to find the perfect family footage. Beyond the stage, we talk about her husband Manuel's "resplendent" hair and her daughter Rosie's hilarious two-year-old sass. Most importantly, Anjelah offers a powerful perspective on parenting: Your child isn't "giving you a hard time," they're going through a hard time. Watch Angela's New Special, Ugly Baby, HERE! Congratulations, job seekers, new workers and soon-to-be-graduates—and also, buckle up - it is a bumpy ride. That's the vibe of early career life right now: a job market that's technically fine (about 4% unemployment), but feels… not fine. Entry-level hiring is down, applications disappear into AI black holes, and even strong candidates are ghosted by bots. It's less “climb the ladder” and more “wander the maze and hope someone opens a door.” Against that backdrop, two big ideas emerge—from Jodi Kantor's framework and a companion piece on women reshaping work rules: craft and need. First, craft. Not your job title—your thing. The skill you build so well that people can't easily replace you. You don't start with it; you notice your way into it. Pay attention to what energizes you at 11:30 a.m. on a random Thursday. Track what you're good at, what you enjoy, and what others naturally come to you for. Careers aren't built in sweeping five-year plans—they're built in small, repeated moments of doing something well. Second, need. The world's problems are the map. The people who thrive aren't just polishing skills in isolation; they're aiming those skills at something that actually matters to others. It's where usefulness meets opportunity. (And yes, that may require some risk—despite every instinct to choose the safest possible path.) So what now? Be practical and intentional. Apply broadly, because the system is weird. But also build relationships, find adjacent opportunities, and keep developing your craft in real time. The market may feel impersonal, but careers are still deeply human. Bottom line: you are not unnedded. The system is just… glitchy. Stay curious, stay persistent, and keep showing up. Good Reads: This Is a Hard Time to Start a Career. These Two Words Can Help. The Dad Edge Podcast (formerly The Good Dad Project Podcast)
In this episode, I sit down with Jon Fogel — pastor, dad of four, PhD candidate in developmental psychology, and bestselling author of Punishment Free Parenting. Jon is one of those rare guys who can make you laugh so hard you forget you're learning some of the most important parenting insights you've ever heard. We open with chaos — including the time his wife went into labor at Goodwill, insisted on finishing the bathroom tile and installing a toilet before going to the hospital, and the time Jon almost missed the birth of his fourth child because he stopped for Jimmy John's on the way back. But then it gets real. Jon breaks down why punishment doesn't work — not as a philosophy, but as brain science. When you punish a child, you activate the threat response system, which is the exact part of the brain that shuts off learning. We dig into what to do instead, the landmark Bobo doll experiment proving kids follow the behavior of the men in their lives above everyone else, and how rupture and repair actually builds stronger relationships than if you'd never messed up at all. Jon also walks us through Set My Feelings Free — his kids' book packed with emotional regulation games you can start using today to stop tantrums before they start. Timeline Summary [0:00] Introduction to the Dad Edge mission [1:02] Introducing Jon Fogel — pastor, author, PhD candidate, and Whole Parent [6:07] Why the parenting space desperately needs more men in it [14:02] Jon's family — and the birth stories that will make you lose it [26:12] Why Jon goes calm in a crisis but loses it over spilled milk [45:34] The core message of Punishment Free Parenting — brain science, not philosophy [49:12] Kids don't have the same negativity bias as adults — they want to see you in the best light [50:18] Your kids aren't trying to give you a hard time — they're having a hard time [51:07] Rupture and repair — why messing up and fixing it builds the strongest bonds [55:39] The dad buried in his phone is a bigger problem than the dad who sometimes loses his temper [57:42] The Still Face Experiment — and what a parent staring at a phone really communicates [1:00:37] The Bobo doll experiment — kids follow the men in their lives above everyone else [1:03:37] You don't have to fix your kids. Fix yourself. Your kids are fine. [1:09:08] Why punishment shuts off the brain's learning system — and what to do instead [1:17:16] Get Curious, Not Furious — the question every parent needs to ask [1:20:12] The Doctor House analogy — stop managing symptoms, find the underlying problem [1:24:05] Set My Feelings Free — emotional regulation games disguised as fun [1:29:34] Why you should never check under the bed for the monster Five Key Takeaways Punishment activates the threat response system — the part of the brain that shuts off learning. Relationship and curiosity do the actual teaching. Your kids are almost never trying to give you a hard time. They're having a hard time and you're witnessing it. Get curious, not furious. The Bobo doll experiment proved it — kids follow the behavior of the men in their lives above everyone else. Fix yourself. Your kids are fine. Every time you mess up and genuinely repair it, the relationship gets stronger than it was before. Rupture and repair builds the deepest bonds. Kids solve problems through play. When screens replace play, they lose their primary tool for processing the hard stuff — and we're modeling that every time we reach for our phones. Best Of 2GG: What do you have a Hard Time Buying? by Two Girls and a Guy
What's the hidden meaning behind the opaque ribbed glass at the bottom of a McConnell's Irish Whisky bottle? What made the opportunity to revive McConnell's Irish Whisky important enough to leave a long and secure career behind? How does a master distiller notice that something is off long before anyone else can spot it? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with John Kelly, CEO of the Belfast Distillery Company, responsible for reviving one of Belfast's most famous brands, McConnell's Irish Whisky, which actually dates back 250 years this year to 1776. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks. Highlights What made John take on the challenge of bringing McConnell's back to Belfast? How did Belfast go from exporting more than 75% of Irish whiskey to losing the McConnell's brand for nearly 80 years? What do the symbols on the McConnell's bottle reveal? How does the opaque glass at the base of the bottle pay tribute to the hidden snug rooms where women once had to drink out of sight? How did John navigate Covid, government negotiations, and US investors to keep going on the McConnell's revival journey? How did relationship building and a strong sense of place help McConnell's earn a spot with the LCBO in Canada? What did it take to transform Belfast's old Crumlin Road prison into a working distillery? Why does John describe McConnell's as the first legal whiskey distillery ever built inside a prison? What's the connection between the brand and female empowerment today? Why does McConnell's deliberately spell whisky without the "e," unlike almost every other Irish whiskey? Why is five years the magic number for McConnell's, and what does that extra time in cask add to the whiskey? How does master distiller Graeme Millar use his palate to catch problems in production? Why do patience and discipline make all the difference for award-winning whiskey? About John Kelly John Kelly is a highly respected drinks industry veteran, with over 30 years' experience in the sector, including 22 years with Diageo, where he held senior roles in sales, marketing and general management within Ireland, Europe and the Middle East. John also worked with Walsh Whiskey in Carlow, Ireland. In 2021, John joined Belfast Distillery Company as CEO and is building the team, bringing distilling back to Belfast in the repurposed Crumlin Road Gaol. In his spare time, John enjoys playing golf, coaching, and ferrying his children around to their various sports events, and best of all, watching from the sidelines. When life gets hard, faith isn’t meant to disappear—it’s meant to deepen. In this message, Pastor Bo shares practical and biblical wisdom on how to walk through difficult seasons without losing heart. Trials are not foreign to faith—they are often the very fire that forms it. Through personal testimony from the early challenges of planting CityLight Church, Pastor Bo shows how seasons of pressure can actually expand our capacity for what God wants to do in and through us.This message encourages believers to fix their eyes on Jesus, guard their minds, refuse isolation, and surrender the outcome to God. With honesty and encouragement, Pastor Bo reminds listeners that setbacks don’t define them—their identity as children of God does. There are many things that can impact your ability to become pregnant. In today's episode, I'm reviewing the top 10 things to consider if you are TTC. 1. Environmental Toxins. Avoid microwaving food in plastic containers or bottles. Always store food and glass or stainless steel containers. Million Marker offers a test to find out if you have in-body toxicity. 2. Chemicals in food and everyday products. Verify that the products you are using are chemical free. You can do that on https://www.ewg.org/ 3. Being sedentary. The CDC and American College of OBGYN, both recommend exercise in amounts of 150 minutes per week. Avoid over exercising, as low BMI can also cause fertility issues. 4. Food allergies or intolerances. Work with a nutritionist to find out if you have a food allergy or other food intolerance. You may also want to consider working with a specialist if you have PCOS or working with a nutritionist like Rohini Bajekal to help you manage PCOS if you have it. 5. Blocked Fallopian Tubes. Check with your doctor to find out if this is what may be causing you to have a hard time TTC. 6. THC and Cannabinoids can affect the motility of the fallopian tube and the receptors in the lining of the uterus. This makes embryo implantation harder and it might not happen as quickly as you would want. 7. Nicotine. Nicotine can affect the DNA and the egg in the sperm cells, and it can also affect a woman's fertility such that she could go potentially into menopause earlier. 8. Blaming birth control pills. Many people think that birth control pills "cause" infertility, but the truth is that because they regulate your period they may be masking the indicators of infertility. Make sure you get your hormone levels checked with your doctor every year to confirm your levels. 9. Ignoring biology. Every woman is born with a finite number of eggs, and if you want to wait to have kids until later in life, be sure and freeze your eggs when you are in your 20s. 10. Not getting enough sleep. Listen on Dr. Aimee's website. Curious about IVF? Click here to join Dr. Aimee for The IVF Class. The next live class call is on Monday, March 9, 2026 at 4pm PST, where Dr. Aimee will explain IVF and egg freezing and there will be time to ask her your questions live on Zoom. Dr. Aimee Eyvazzadeh is one of America's most well known fertility doctors. Her success rate at baby-making is what gives future parents hope when all hope is lost. What do you do when the world feels like it's on fire, and your nervous system is simply running out of capacity to hold it all?Today, I'm stepping away from the usual "teaching" and "fixing" to have a very honest, human-to-human check-in. One of the most obnoxious sounds in nature is the whine of a Wall Street banker. It's a cross between the tantrum of a peevish brat and the blathering of a sputtering old plutocrat.Consider the long, piteous whimper of Jamie Dimon, potentate of the powerful JPMorgan Chase banking empire. He constantly whines about laws to restrict banker greed, even toting around a Rube Goldberg-style cartoon depicting a tangle of rules that, he squeals, is choking poor Wall Streeters like him. Before you break into tears about Jamie's plight, though, notice that he and his bank are not choking on rules, but gorging on riches. Dimon himself pocketed – get this -- $770 million in personal pay last year.Golly, we should all suffer like poor Jamie! And he's hardly alone in singing the “Talking Banker Blues,” for that elite clique has long pouted that they're paupers compared to the billionaires of high tech. So, mounting an odd boardroom “labor action,” bankers have been getting drastic payhikes. The CEO of Citigroup, for example, recently set a new bottom line expectation for top-floor bankers: A 2025 paycheck of more than $100 million! How can a business lavish such a windfall on one guy? Easy. The CEO slashed tens of thousands of bank employees from Citi's payroll last year, so he got their pay.Woody Guthrie once wrote a parody of such predatory behavior, singing “I am a jolly banker, A jolly banker am I.” Today's Wall Street aristocrats are jolly, too, bloating their extravagant wealth by taking wages and livelihoods from thousands of their own employees. As Woody might sing, that's how inequality “happens.”Do something!Wanna fight the bankers and their rigged systems? Americans for Financial Reform thinks that “the financial system should serve an economy where everyone can thrive, not just enrich a powerful few.” Sounds great to us! If the thought of taking a break makes you anxious, you're not alone. Let's talk about why so many women (and men) feel like everything will fall apart the moment they stop moving. In this episode, I'm unpacking three reasons why rest feels terrifying - from nervous system's addiction to urgency to the fear that your worth is tied to your output. More importantly, I want you to havepractical ways to start retraining your brain to trust yourself to rest. In This Episode, You'll Learn: The 3 reasons stillness feels scary How your nervous system gets addicted to urgency and constant motion Why high achievers tie their identity to productivity How to teach your nervous system that stillness is safe, not a threat Do any (or all!) of these resonate?: "If I slow down, will everything fall apart?" "Do people think I'm slacking if I'm not constantly achieving?" "Who am I if I'm not the doer or the fixer?" If these thoughts sound familiar, this episode will help you understand why rest isn't the opposite of success... it's what sustains it. Merle Haggard was what authorities liked to call a “repeat offender.” He was arrested for riding trains, for skipping school, for stealing cars, for robbing gas stations, and for attempting to knock over a restaurant – during the Christmas Eve rush. He was committed to juvenile halls, correctional facilities, and reform schools 17 times, and 17 times he escaped. When he was arrested for the final time, he was sent to do hard time at San Quentin. He turned 21 in prison. And it was in prison that he found the freedom he'd been running towards his whole life – freedom that was delivered from an unlikely source.
