“Your biological clock is ticking.” “You'll regret not having kids.” Any woman who even hints she is maybe questioning whether or not she wants to have kids has heard some form of these cultural scripts. Our guest today asks, “Is it possible to do something more meaningful than mothering?” (Hint: the answer is yes.) The conversation today is for anyone—whether mom or non-mom, stepparent or foster parent, infertile or ambivalent—who has been shamed, in particular by American Christianity, for not feeling what they're “supposed to feel” about motherhood. Our guest for this episode is Erin S. Lane, a writer, theologian, and someone other than a mother. She is the author of Someone Other Than a Mother: Flipping the Scripts on a Woman's Purpose and Making Meaning Beyond Motherhood. She holds a bachelor's degree from Davidson College and a master's degree from Duke Divinity School, both with a focus on gender studies. Mentored by Parker J. Palmer and the Center for Courage & Renewal, she works as a vocational retreat facilitator, helping people discern their wildest questions of purpose. On episode 82 of Outside The Studio: Ever felt a bit of shame or guilt pinned on you when admitting you don't want to have kids? Erin Lane and Tessa Tovar chat on how not all women feel the "baby fever" craze that is so often assumed. Listen for the discussion on adoption, abortion, personal accomplishments, and what it means to not have biological children. Erin S. Lane is a writer, theologian, and someone other than a mother. She is the author of Someone Other Than a Mother and Lessons in Belonging from a Church-Going Commitment Phobe. (51:50) Connect with Erin Lane Key Takeaways 1. Our society is a "mother venerated, woman phobic," paradox. Childless women have a sense of shame towards them, especially if proud of it. Mothers begin to have celebrations such as baby showers, however, women who don't have children, don't typically have any standard celebration for their own accomplishments. This isn't to minimize the celebration of mothers, but reveres them as something of the highest achievement. Society ignores women, but loves mothers. 2. "Your biological clock is ticking, that baby fever is going to kick in!" is something many women have been told. However, on the individual scale, this is not a thing for every person. Many women have no such feelings or urges ever in their life and should be treated as a normal thing, rather than unusual or selfish. 3. You can have children without having children. Through adoption or not, it is more about the connections and influences we have on each other, rather than the biological ties. Good government and good friendships will take better care of you than your kin. It's the motherlode episode. Most women of a certain age (our age) have kids. They just do. And we don't. Living in that reality can be complicated — it's fun to be an "auntie," but it's not the same as being a mom — there's grief and there's gain. On this episode, Katelyn and Roxy grapple with their own winding paths to life without kids. We share what's it's meant to mourn that loss while finding ways to embrace the gifts of a childfree life. We're joined by Erin S. Lane who helps us challenge the default scripts of motherhood that society — and churches! — so often impose on women's lives.GUEST:Erin S. Lane is the author of Someone Other Than a Mother: Flipping the Scripts on a Woman's Purpose and Making Meaning Beyond Motherhood and works as a vocational retreat facilitator. Anushay describes herself as being “obsessed” with motherhood in America, largely because of its constant cultural contradictions. The image of motherhood in America is so white, yet its Black & Brown women who are more likely to die giving birth in the US. We claim to worship mothers but remain the only industrialized nation without paid maternity leave. And what about the women who don't want to be mothers? Is it possible to do something more meaningful than mothering? The latter is the question at the heart of Theologian Erin S. Lane‘s book, Someone Other than a Mother. In this episode, Lane spills the tea on overturning dominant narratives about motherhood and inspiring women to write their own stories.

I got to know Katey Zeh when our mutual friend Erin Lane introduced us, and I’m so glad she did. Katey has experience working as an advocate for women and girls who are being trafficked, which has greatly informed how she reads the bible. The result is her brand new book, Women Rise Up: Sacred Stories for Today’s Revolution. Katey speaks the truth of the abuse, oppression, and erasure women have endured in the stories told in the Scriptures, much of which is still happening in the world today. Click here to enjoy the episode. Connect with Katey: Katey’s Website Twitter Instagram Katey’s Podcast: Kindreds (with Ashley Peterson) “I don’t know anyone who more seamlessly marries her scriptural imagination with an activist sensibility than Katey Zeh. She is a reliable, skilled, and (thanks to be God) altogether human teacher who is not afraid to trouble the waters of some of our most beloved (and forgotten) readings of biblical women – and their enduring witness in our modern lives. If you are looking for an easy bake women’s book study, you won’t find it here. But if you dare to go where few have willingly gone into this study of what it means to be a female follower of God, you will come out the other side just as Zeh hoped: more resilient, more compassionate, and better able to rise up in the face of injustices near and far. I recommend this book to any girl beginning to wonder what relevancy the biblical stories have in her life – and any pastor, counselor, parent, or mentor who cares enough to walk into the complexity with her.” – Erin S. Lane, Author of Lessons in Belonging.
