Scott Erickson joins us to talk about the power of art in our spiritual lives. Scott talks about growing up in a religious family with significant exposure to Christian traditions but feeling out of place due to his inclination towards art in a tradition that lacked visual representation. But then he found the old European cathedrals and realized art can be used as a significant medium for spiritual development. Today we talk about how he describes his job, the benefit of art in the church, and the "haunted" role of the artist.Find out more about Scott Erickson - his art, books, shows, and resources HEREExplore Scott Erickson's talks on his YouTube channel HEREContact Cyndi Parker through Narrative of Place.Join Cyndi Parker's  Patreon Team!

We are joined by the amazing Scott Erickson to discuss JURASSIC PARK, a heartwarming tale of how a billionaire decides to bring back prehistoric murder machines for profit, a motive that has no real precedent in today's world. We'll dive into the real questions—What ice cream does Joe spare no expense on? Should Neapolitan ice cream be equally chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry? How does Jeff Goldblum somehow made sweaty chaos theory sexy. There's obviously a LOT to talk about. Also, we get to the real MVPs: Timmy, the trolling younger brother, Newman's Barbasol can, Samuel L. Jackson's off-screen demise(?), and that poor lawyer who just wanted a quiet moment on the toilet. From velociraptors who learned how to open doors to a T-Rex that follows no rules of physics, we're covering all the glorious nonsense that makes Jurassic Park a high-budget disasterpiece. Merry Christmas, Kindred! The phrase “Don't be afraid” appears four times throughout the retelling of the Christmas story. It's clear an encounter with the divine was awe-inspiring, but these words are also spoken in response to the specific fears some of the characters carried. We all carry fears of our own about life and the future and the world. Tonight we remember how the Christmas story speaks to our unique fears. When God says, “Don't be afraid”, he isn't belittling our worry or uncertainty, but ensuring us he is right here, with us in every dimension of our humanity…including our fear. Inspiration for this series is drawn from Scott Erickson's reflections in his book, "Honest Advent".This message is from our Wednesday night service on December 22nd, 2024.Beginning on January 5th, 2025 we will gather on Sunday mornings at 10:00am at the AMC Orchard Theatre (14653 Orchard Parkway, Westminster 80023). Connect with us:kindredchurch.co@kindredchurch.cofacebook.com/kindredchurch.co

What was supposed to be a conversation about Advent, turned into the kind of surprise that Advent portends—where the strange wonderful thing that you didn't know that you needed, just kind of happens to you out of nowhere. A vulnerable conversation between friends still not entirely sure what they want to be when they grow up about aging, creativity, what we want to do with what we still have left in the tank, the second half of life….and yes, ultimately, Advent too. We hope you enjoy this minor Christmas miracle of a conversation with our friend Scott Erickson, an artist, author, and performance speaker who is creating a visual vocabulary for the spiritual journey.

As we journey into this Advent season, Scott Erickson, better known to most by his moniker in the internet and art world as Scott the Painter, discusses his journey of faith and the creation of his 'Honest Advent,' project aimed at reinterpreting traditional Christmas narratives through a lens of vulnerability and authenticity. He reflects on the paradoxes of belief, the importance of community, and the need for honest conversations about faith and the human experience, particularly during the Advent season. With a great deal of compassion and humor, Scott shares insights into his creative process, the significance of connection in his work (which has resonated so deeply with his community that many have it tattooed on their bodies), and the need for honest spiritual experiences in today's world. His work is not just visually beautiful. It's also meaningful, bringing a beautiful new approach to an old and familiar story. Thought-provoking Quotes: “As an artist, I love the brand of Christmas – red and green, complimentary colors. I love the music – the soundtrack, I love all of it. But I thought, is this a distraction from life or is this a hopeful message for the reality of it?” – Scott Erickson “I want to know if I should just give up on my beliefs. If God's not in the world and this isn't a story that's happening, then I just want to move on. But, if we are celebrating this thing and if it is happening, then that's what my invitation is. By going through those things, and thinking through, and praying through, and then creating out of it, the fact that it then becomes a path for others to walk, that's the greatest gift in making art.” – Scott Erickson  “It's amazing, the alchemy of what happens when you hand the work over and then it becomes something new in the hands of your audience and the people that are experiencing it and they bring a story to it that you couldn't even fathom. You've done your part, you did the creation part, stewarding your gift, putting it out there to the best of your ability and then they take it and it becomes something more. I'll never get over that exchange.” – Jen Hatmaker Resources Mentioned in This Episode: FitBit - https://store.google.com/category/trackers Scott's Tattoo FAQ - https://www.scottericksonart.com/tattoo-faq Say Yes: Discover the Surprising Life beyond the Death of a Dream by Scott Erickson - https://amzn.to/3AEVfao Scott Erickson's Shows - https://www.scottericksonart.com/shows The Enneagram Institute Personality Types - https://www.enneagraminstitute.com/type-descriptions/ Honest Advent: Awakening to the Wonder of God-with-Us Then, Here, and Now by Scott Erickson - https://amzn.to/4fgK6fc Guest's Links: Scott's website - https://www.scottericksonart.com/ Scott's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/scottthepainter Scott's Twitter - https://x.com/scottthepainter Scott's Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/scottthepainter Scott's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@scottericksonart Scott's Pinterest - https://www.pinterest.com/scottthepainter/_created/ Connect with Jen! Discovering Creativity: An Intimate Conversation with Scott EricksonWhat does it mean to live a creative life? Is creativity a talent, or is it an innate intelligence that we all possess? In this week's episode of The Creative Genius Podcast, I had the pleasure of sitting down with the remarkable artist and storyteller, Scott Erickson, to explore these questions and so much more. Scott's journey as an artist has been deeply influenced by his unique experience with aphantasia—a condition where one cannot visualize images in their mind's eye—and he opens up about how this has shaped his creative expression.Together, we delve into the haunting nature of creativity, the role of pain in transforming life into art, and the importance of emotional intelligence in understanding the human experience. Scott's reflections on gratitude, surrender, and navigating the inner voice will resonate with anyone who has ever struggled with self-doubt or felt overwhelmed by the weight of their creative aspirations. But more than that, this conversation serves as a gentle reminder that creativity is not a linear journey. It's messy, it's beautiful, and it's deeply human. Scott's raw honesty will inspire you to listen more closely to your inner voice and trust that, even in the chaos, there's a path to something beautiful.

“I'm a Christian because of the shortest verse in the Bible: Jesus wept.” Something I didn't wake up to until after my stroke is the fact that joy and sadness can co-exist. In fact, they can do it pretty beautifully if we allow them to. My friend Scott knows how to be sad. That may sound like a backhanded compliment, but hear me out. I think learning to fully engage our sorrow is one of the healthiest rhythms we can find, especially as followers of Jesus. On September 29, 2020, the Iskander family of six went out for an evening stroll in their Westlake Village neighborhood having no idea of the tragedy that lay ahead. On that same evening, wealthy socialite Rebecca Grossman was having drinks at a local Westlake Village restaurant with Royce Clayton and Scott Erickson, two former major league baseball players. After downing margaritas, Grossman and Erickson got into their expensive cars and headed toward Grossman's nearby condo to hang out. At some point, the two decided to race each other through the residential neighborhood. At that exact moment, Nancy Iskander and her three sons were crossing the street. Before they could respond, Rebecca Grossman and Scott Erickson came racing toward them in their vehicles fueled by bravado tequila. One of the vehicles struck two of the Iskander boys, Mark and Jacob, killing them. Three and a half agonizing years later, Rebecca Grossman went on trial for Mark and Jacob's murder.  The headline-making trial resulted in a surprising verdict.  Mark and Jacob Iskander foundation: MarkAndJacobFoundation.org Follow Jami on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir and join the Serial Streamers true crime TV club! Rebecca Grossman, 60, co-founder of the Grossman Burn Foundation, has been convicted of murder and other charges following a fatal car crash that claimed the lives of two young boys in a residential neighborhood in California. Grossman was found guilty on two counts each of second-degree murder and vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, along with one count of hit-and-run resulting in death. The jury could have opted for lesser charges, such as vehicular manslaughter with ordinary negligence. The victims, Jacob Iskander, 8, and Mark Iskander, 11, were struck and killed by Grossman's vehicle as they crossed the street at a marked crosswalk in their Westlake Village neighborhood on September 29, 2020. The verdict, delivered after two days of deliberations, was met with mixed emotions in the courtroom. Nancy Iskander, the mother of the victims, expressed both grief and relief, stating that attending the court proceedings felt like reliving the funeral of her boys every day. "This decision underscores our commitment to holding accountable those who drive with total disregard for human life," stated the district attorney's office, commending the jury for its ruling. During the trial, it was revealed that Grossman was allegedly engaging in a high-speed race with former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Scott Erickson at speeds exceeding 80 mph in a 45-mph zone. Grossman reportedly continued driving after striking the children, only stopping a quarter mile away when her engine cut off. Grossman's defense argued that she was traveling at a lower speed and that Erickson's vehicle was the first to strike the boys. However, prosecutors contended that Grossman's actions, including drinking cocktails with Erickson before the race, demonstrated a reckless disregard for human life. As the verdict was read in court, Grossman's daughter, Alexis, expressed shock and sorrow, while her teenage brother shook visibly. Grossman's lead attorney, Tony Buzbee, announced plans to appeal the decision, citing alleged errors in the case. The sentencing for Rebecca Grossman is scheduled for April 10, where she faces up to 34 years to life in state prison. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Rebecca Grossman, a 60-year-old Los Angeles socialite, and former magazine publisher, walked arm-in-arm with her plastic surgeon husband, Peter Grossman, to the Van Nuys West Courthouse for the commencement of her murder trial. Grossman is accused of killing two young brothers in a drunken hit-and-run, allegedly racing her reported lover, former MLB player Scott Erickson, at the time of the fatal crash. Rebecca Grossman faces up to 34 years behind bars on two counts of second-degree murder for the 2020 deaths of Jacob Iskander, 8, and Mark Iskander, 11.  The shocking incident occurred on September 29, 2020, when Rebecca, allegedly speeding at 71 mph, plowed into the two boys walking inside a crosswalk in Westlake Village. The collision launched Mark more than 250 feet, leading to his immediate death. Jacob passed away several hours later at the hospital. Witnesses reported that Grossman was racing with Scott Erickson, who was in another car at the time of the crash. The pair, reportedly in a relationship, had allegedly been drinking at a nearby restaurant prior to the collision. Prosecutors plan to present evidence that Rebecca had Valium in her system during the crash, further hindering her ability to drive. Despite maintaining innocence and blowing a 0.076%, Grossman faces charges of two counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and one count of hit-and-run driving resulting in death. The court is allowed to provide jurors with evidence of Grossman's alleged love affair with Erickson at the time of the crash, as ruled by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Joseph Brandolino. Rebecca Grossman maintains her innocence, denying any involvement in the collision with the boys. However, Nancy Iskander, the grieving mother, contends that both Grossman and Erickson were driving at excessive speeds before the tragic incident occurred. Nancy, who narrowly avoided the collision with her younger son Zachary, expressed frustration that neither party stopped after the incident, making it difficult for her to determine which vehicle struck her sons. According to Nancy's account, she and Jacob were on inline skates, crossing the road at the crosswalk, while Mark was on his skateboard. Zachary, then five years old, was on his scooter, accompanied by her husband and daughter jogging nearby. Mark was declared dead at the scene, and Jacob succumbed to his injuries hours later at the hospital. The upcoming trial is expected to feature testimony from a California Highway Patrol officer who had previously pulled over Rebecca for speeding at 92 mph, warning her about the potential dangers. The court may also hear from Robert Apodaca, a former LA County Sheriff's Deputy specializing in traffic crashes. During the preliminary hearing, Apodaca estimated Rebecca's speed at 71.7 mph at the time of the collision, with the car's computer indicating 73 mph. He revealed that 11-year-old Mark was thrown 254 feet, the farthest he had witnessed a person being tossed in a crash. Another deputy, Rafael Mejia, testified that he found Rebecca a third of a mile away from the crash site, where she had pulled over and expressed confusion about why her airbag had deployed. Scott Erickson faced a misdemeanor charge, and his case was resolved in February 2022, with his attorney asserting his non-involvement in a hit-and-run. Rebecca Grossman has pleaded not guilty and is currently out on $2 million bond. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In this engaging conversation, Scott challenges us to think about our obsession with the afterlife and invites us to trust in grace, as matters of birth, death, and rebirth are beyond our control. We'll uncover the richness of Jesus's narrative, exploring how the Christmas season isn't just about the commerce that clamors for our attention, but a time to ponder the profound meaning of Jesus's birth.Scott shares insights from his art, which strays from the trodden path of traditional Christmas illustrations while reflecting on the deeply spiritual encounter with the biological miracle of childbirth. Through his work, Scott seeks to bridge the distance between our societal aversion to vulnerability and the need to embrace our tender hearts for deep understanding.Together, we'll unpack why Jesus's embodiment as a human requires us not only to reflect but also to engage physically through practices like pilgrimage. Scott's transformative art and stories urge us to consider Jesus's incarnation not just as a historical event, but as an ever-present reality. And as Scott will reveal, our journey with Christ also means apprenticeship to our own mortality.----View this episode on YouTube = https://youtu.be/OuDt1bvm_oA----Scott Erickson is an artist, author, performance speaker, and creative curator who mixes autobiography, mythology, and aesthetics to create art and moments that speak to our most profound experiences.Using his passion and commitment to craft, Scott has been a working artist for over a decade and has had his work appear on CNN, National Geographic, and various magazines, newspaper outlets, and book covers. He is the co-author of Prayer: Forty Days of Practice and May It Be So, the author of Honest Advent and Say Yes.

With these images, they explore where God is in our humanity, in our broken, imperfect bodies, and in the mightiness God displayed when he came to earth in the form of a tiny baby, choosing to go through the world in all his humanness, just as we do. They discuss how to make the ordinary sacred and the invitation to pause and notice our experiences in our very human bodies this Advent, searching for what they reveal about God.   This season, we've invited artist, author, and speaker Scott Erickson to join us. See the image discussed in today's episode HERE.   This week, as Ruth, Scott, and Charity examine Scott's “cover” of Sister Grace Remington's beautiful painting Mary and Eve, they delve into womanhood, mothering, and the invitation to embrace vulnerability this advent. Why is it so scandalous to talk about God as a mother? What does the vulnerability of God coming into the world as a baby have to teach us about our own vulnerability? How does our obsession with meritocracy (defined in this conversation as the earning of God's good grace by our deeds, awards, and success) rob us of actual grace and love?   This season, we've invited artist, author, and speaker Scott Erickson to join us. As we mark the first week of Advent we are examining the Annunciation. How do we define a revelation and what does it expose in us? What does a revelation do to our plans and certainty? Where is God in the midst of it all? Shownotes:Somewhere in the rhythm of spiritual practices and religious traditions, American Christians have lost the sense of beauty, awe, and wonder that permeates through familiar stories of the Bible. Conversely, Western Christian culture sanitizes the reality of darkness throughout the Biblical narrative. Our culture brings more attention to the glory of Easter than the brokenness of Good Friday, and we celebrate Mary bringing Jesus into the world while glossing over her grief from losing her Son. As we draw nearer to the holiday season, colorful decorations place a blanket of comfort over the harsh realities we live in, covering up the vulnerabilities of our human nature. This was the inspiration behind Scott Erickson's new book Honest Advent: Awakening to the Wonder of God-with-Us Then, Here, and Now. A painter, performance speaker, and writer, Scott offers familiar symbols steeped in what he describes as an “honest and robust spirituality.” Scott understands that we must experience an awakening within ourselves in order to connect to God with the level of depth our faith requires. He joins Eddie and Chris to speak about the nature of prayer as a portal that is already inside of us, the aspects of communal worship and life together, and the ways we can expand our view of the Christian faith. Scott speaks to the transformation that comes when we fully embrace our brokenness, engage in life together, and search for our own stories in the symbols all around us.Resources:Follow Scott Erickson on the web: https://www.scottericksonart.com Order Honest Advent: Awakening to the Wonder of God-with-Us Then, Here, and Now hereOrder Scott's art here:https://scottericksonartshop.com Check out Scott's books here:https://www.scottericksonart.com/books Follow Scott Erickson on social media:https://www.facebook.com/scottericksonart https://www.instagram.com/scottthepainter/ https://twitter.com/scottthepainter
