Happy Throwback Thursday, Heal Squad! Today, we're revisiting our conversation with NYT best-selling author Shauna Niequist, who's challenging us to finally take the reins and live the life we truly want to live. Despite experiencing success in multiple areas, Shauna realized that her inability to be fully present with the people she loved most - her husband and children - was the final straw. As she opens up about this experience in our conversation, Shauna's decision to choose presence over perfection wasn't an easy one; by sharing her wise words of wisdom “saying yes to some means saying no to others”. As tough as it can be sometimes Shauna challenges us to remember that if we're destined to disappoint people anyway, shouldn't we make it those who are not as important to us, rather than our closest loved ones? If this resonates with you, then this episode is an absolute must-listen. Shauna's honesty and practical wisdom will inspire you to start prioritizing what truly matters most. Healers and Heal-Liners Very rarely do you change your life until the pain level gets high enough.  Pay attention to the things and people who make you jealous, because it may reveal what you actually want in your life.  You make the best decisions when your bravery just outweighs your fear.  There's no one right way for each of us for every season.  If you're going to give up the myth that you have to do it all for everyone, then that means you have to come to the reality that you're going to disappoint someone. We set people's expectations for us by how we communicate to them. Original Air Date: April 7, 2021Your life is always speaking to you in whispers, guiding you to your next right step. In many situations, the whisper is also the first warning. It's a quiet nudge from deep within saying, Hmmm, something feels off. A small voice that tells you, “This is no longer your place of belonging.” It's the pit in your stomach, or the pause before you speak. It's the shiver, the goosebumps that raise the hairs on the back of your neck. Whatever form the whisper takes, it's not a coincidence. Your life is trying to tell you something. Heeding these signs can open the doors to your personal evolution, pushing you toward your life's purpose. Ignoring them or sleepwalking through your life, is an invitation to chaos. In this Super Soul podcast, Oprah sits down with such gifted writers and thought leaders as Dani Shapiro, Caroline Myss, Adyashanti, Shauna Niequist, Jon Kabat Zinn, Cheryl Strayed, Pema Chödrön, Amy Purdy, John Lewis, Wes Moore, Kerry Washington and Thomas Moore. “I guess I haven't learned that yet.” That's a phrase coined by author Shauna Niequist [knee-kwist].  After her two sons, Henry and Mac, had lived in a small town their whole life, Shauna and her husband moved the family to New York City. As her sons struggled with the transition to city life, Shauna pinned a piece of paper to the wall with the phrase “I guess I haven't learned that yet” on it. She reminded her boys that everyone is growing and learning, and that it's fine to not know everything. Your son might need to hear that, too. When he makes a mistake, reassure him that it's a normal part of growing up. Remind him that God's grace is sufficient to cover every last one of the things we haven't learned yet. Hey friends! Welcome to Girls' Night! At the moment we're in between seasons here on the show. But while we're waiting for our next official season to begin, we thought this would be a great time to pull some of our favorite episodes out of the Girls Night archive. This is the perfect time to catch up on episodes you might have missed, or listen again to old favorites. I'm so excited because, recently, I had the honor and privilege of interviewing my all-time favorite author, Shauna Niequist, and that's the conversation you're going to hear today! If you've been following along with my corner of the internet for a while, you've probably heard me mention Shauna and her books — one of my favorites being Cold Tangerines. Her words and stories and wisdom have impacted my life and truly shaped who I am as a person, a writer, a friend and, now, as a mom.  Shauna has a book called, I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet: Discovering New Ways of Living When the Old Ways Stop Working, and in it she talks a lot about life in the midst of transitions. Well, today she is talking us through some of the things we all need to hear in the midst of life's biggest transitions and I cannot WAIT for you to hear what she had to say.  Learn more about your ad choices. In her book, Present Over Perfect, Shauna Niequist asks, ″What would our lives be like if our days were studded by tiny, completely unproductive, silly, nonstrategic, wild and beautiful five-minute breaks, reminders that our days are for loving and learning and laughing, not for pushing and planning, reminders that it's all about the heart, not about the hustle?″ What would that be like? Today's episode of Creative Lift, "Living the Artful Life: Design for Delight," builds on the ideas we explored in episode 55: Create Story Moments. We'll look at additional ways to be intentional about savoring moments as part of living an artful life. How, for instance, might we find luxury in small, everyday delights? How might we learn to appreciate the simple things in life? The invitation in this episode is to design an evening of delight and live it up to the fullest. The best part is that not only will your delight be FUN for you and whomever you include in your experience, but when you tell the story of your delight-filled evening with others, you'll spread joy and happiness to others, too. What I'm learning is this: delight is contagious! Visit this link for the show notes. Episode Links: Find me on Instagram: @naomikinsman Find Alex on Instagram: @ag.doherty

In my new book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, I write about how the "old friend" doesn't necessarily mean than you've known one another for decades. All that is required to hold that Life Council seat is to have a friend who has known you from one version of yourself into another. That actual timeline might vary.  But Shauna Niequist is one of my oldest friends however you measure it. We met in the late 90's working at summer camp, where (as I wrote about in my first book Share Your Stuff), I learned from Shauna a different way to walk in the world than I had previously been exposed to.  For twenty-five years, Shauna has been a friend, role model, mentor, and, yes, even a fellow obsessive as we discuss in this episode.  Shauna Niequist is the New York Times bestselling author of Cold Tangerines, Bittersweet, Bread & Wine, Savor, Present Over Perfect, and I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet. Life isn't always as easy as we'd like it to be.  We will face difficult chapters in our lives where things feel like they're crumbling, breaking down, or falling apart. Peculiar seasons where everything seems to just go wrong and the solutions feel out of reach. It's not impossible to gather the courage to march through these challenging seasons and even take a lesson or two from them. Following the launch of her most recent book, I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet, I interviewed Shauna Niequist, one of my favorite writers, who is wise beyond her years. Shauna understands that the truly abundant life isn't one that is gained by external markers of success. Rather it is about mustering up courage to forge ahead even when our lives are falling apart. In this episode, my guest: Shauna Niequist, shows you how you can find a silver lining even when things don't go your way. You'll discover the power behind viewing the world and yourself with compassion in difficult times so you don't get overwhelmed. Listen in…. Show Highlights Include: How even an abandoned project can be a blessing in disguise that prepares you for new opportunities (and sharpens your skills). (08:55) How Shauna got the title for her book ‘Present Over Perfect' and how you could adopt the lesson behind it to savor the important seasons in your life. (11:55) The ‘suffering Olympics' mindset you must get rid of that causes us to judge other people's pain (and keeps us from sharing ours). (18:28) Why adopting the right level of transparency for your audience keeps you and your readers safe (without having to lie about your height). Hey friend! Do you find yourself still reeling from the extraordinary changes we've experienced over the past two years in one way or another? (My hand is raised over here for sure!) Today, I'm bringing back one of my favorite episodes from 2022 - the amazing  Shauna Niequist ! I brought this conversation back from the archives because I don't know about you, friend, but this book and Shauna's message still feel relevant to what's going on around me right now. I hope you also find value in listening to this one once again with me. In this episode, Shauna and I take a deep dive into how pain can make us tender, demand less of the world, and show us the good even in the face of what has been lost. We also talk about how seasons of significant loss can act as catalysts to significant transformation in our lives. Our pain doesn't define us; what we do with it does. You truly don't want to miss this one, my friend! Shauna Niequist is the New York Times bestselling author of Cold Tangerines, Bittersweet, Bread & Wine, Savor, Present Over Perfect, and her latest book, I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet. She is married to Aaron, and they live in New York City with their sons, Henry and Mac.  Listen in to hear all about: The concept of finding your next self. The importance of taking care of ourselves (and how to cultivate a desire to fight for our health!). How to live lightly and be a person who is easily delighted.   Favorite quotes: ~~If you feel overwhelmed by the mess that your life has become, don't try to go through that alone.  ~~I need to not listen to the voices that are telling me who to be, I need to get quiet enough to listen to the voice deep inside of me to see what she has to say.  ~~We don't change when we are feeding ourselves a steady diet of shame and abuse. We change when we anchor ourselves in love and self-esteem - That's what gives us the courage to make changes. ~~I want to walk through life not dragging around these resentments, grudges and complaints. I want to live with a sense of freedom, with a lot of space inside myself,  inside my heart for possibility for the present and the future instead of feeling like I am dragging my past behind me like an anchor. ~~I want to maintain the capacity to be easily delighted. I want to be a person for whom joy comes easily and frustration is harder to come by. ~~Pain can tenderize you and can make you demand less of the world and can show you what's good even in the face of what's been lost. It's holding out these little edges of your own experience and offering them to someone else as an active service saying, ‘Does this help? Does this make you feel a little less alone in the world? Could this keep you company along the rougher parts of your journey?'" – Shauna Niequist  “You can live in the most beautiful house in the world or you can have the coolest friends in the world or the coolest experiences, if your mind and body are not working, none of that matters. None of it.”  – Shauna Niequist  “There are seasons where we can't always find a church home and that's okay. And then you practice your faith in a field or watching the water or with your journal, or as you walk the city streets and you pray that maybe there will be a time when you can sit at the back of a church, but your faith doesn't have to look the same way forever.”  – Shauna Niequist    Shauna's LinksWebsite  Instagram  I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet - Shauna Niequist    Connect with Jen!Jen's website Jen's Instagram Jen's Twitter Jen's Facebook Jen's YouTube

Friendship is one of those gifts in life we can run to when it feels like the rest of the world just doesn't get us. On a day when life hasn't been cooperating exactly as you'd hoped, who hasn't called that friend we can vent to, cry to, laugh with, and compare notes with? And the longer a friendship goes, the deeper the bond seems to be. But some of us are in spaces in our lives where we've had to follow another dream and leave the proximity of our friends. And the work of friendship takes on a different layer.  It can be difficult to connect like we used to–even if it was just dropping by to say hi because you could–it's harder to keep relationships alive when you don't see your friend daily, weekly, or even monthly. In this second installment of our For the Love of Conversations with Jen and Kelly, we are talking all about friendship and how it changes as you mature, grow, and perhaps even re-locate. And how to keep it going strong—even across the divides of family commitments, jobs, and miles in between. Jen and Kelly first had this conversation over on Kelly's podcast, but we loved it so much we had to share it here–plus–-Jen has added some of her own insights and comments regarding her friendship with Kelly and what she learned through their conversation.    * * *   Thank you to our sponsors!   MeCourse | Save $20 on the parenting MeCourse using the code Parenting20 at mecourse.org. Thought-Provoking Quotes   “We're older and friendships have shifted and we have changed. A friend that was a friend 15 years ago doesn't have a tidy space in the life we have now, or our lives have changed. We've moved, and making new friends at our age can be really challenging. I don't think it's as trite as it might sound.”  – Jen Hatmaker    “Those precious friends that are in every nook and cranny, the ones who need nothing, no invitation, no permission, no entertaining, they can be pretty rare. I think we probably treasure them and miss them when we don't have them.”  – Jen Hatmaker   “I like the appreciation you're showing for some of the spaces where friendships can be surprising, where they're not just the ones we choose or we seek out, or the thing that we have in common is so obvious that we're just bound to be friends. Some of those are the most interesting people that come into our lives.”  – Jen Hatmaker   “I'm a fixer like you, and I'm smart at fixing. I'm so good at it if everybody would listen to me. But I've been in really serious therapy for the last year and a half just working through all of it. Part of it has been my kids suffering, which like me, okay, I can handle this. My kids suffering? Just put me under.”   – Jen Hatmaker    “What's interesting is the challenge. What's interesting is a little bit of tension, a completely different opinion or perspective or experience. That's interesting. That makes me curious. That'll keep me locked in.”  – Jen Hatmaker   “A connected life drunk with rich relationships is central to my soul theology. I hold so many elements of my life loosely. My career and platform matter enormously, and I aim to offer the truest best work I'm capable of. But if it went away or shifted, I'd adjust my sails. However, if all I was left holding were relationships with my family and closest community, if that is all that remained, I would still consider myself the luckiest girl on earth. My life derives its greatest meaning, its power and energy, from the people I love who love me too.”  – Jen Hatmaker   Kelly's LinksWebsite  Instagram Kelly's Podcast, Kelly Corrigan Wonders    Books & Resources Mentioned in This EpisodeFor the Love of Friendships: Savoring Your Friendships with Shauna Niequist  Kate Baer  Connect with Jen!Jen's website Jen's InstagramJen's Twitter Jen's FacebookJen's YouTube

What do you do when the story you're living suddenly doesn't fit anymore? What happens when your story gets rewritten in real time—and you have no backspace button you can push? We've all been there in one way or another. So has author Shauna Niequist. Like many of us, Shauna has been in a season of unraveling and reweaving. A few years ago she, her husband Aaron, and their two boys left their hometown of Chicago and moved into an 800-square-foot apartment in Manhattan, where they knew exactly eight (!) people. Shauna and Emily talk about how to embrace the changes you asked for and the ones you didn't, why we'll never stop learning things (and why that's a great thing!). Above all, Shauna reminds us that life as we know it is going to change. It's not easy. It's definitely messy. We all walk through seasons of transition, whether we leave something behind by choice or it was chosen for us. In this episode, Sharon sits down with author Shauna Niequist, who–along with her husband and young sons–moved from their suburban midwestern home to NYC. When her sons expressed discomfort and frustrations with learning a new way of living, Shauna set about softening their mindsets by writing “I guess I haven't learned that yet” on a sticky note for the whole family to see. The mantra expanded, and Shauna realized that it pertained to both little life skills and larger life goals. When we give ourselves grace to live for a while in the state of uncertainty, we open ourselves up to curiosity, mistakes, possibility, and perseverance.
