How strong are biological arguments for or against various treatments? When did the Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) movement begin? How did the EBM movement overcome initial resistance among medical professionals? What resources do doctors have at their disposals to find up-to-date information about treatment efficacies? Why is the pharmaceutical industry allowed such influence over information about treatments? What is the GRADE approach to EBM? What does EBM have to say about the role of patient preferences and values? How bad is being overweight? What are "surrogate" or "substitute" outcomes? How rigorous is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)? How often do treatments suffer from a lack of high-quality evidence of an effect versus plenty of high-quality evidence of a lack of an effect? What's the state of evidence about the placebo effect? What are the most exciting current initiatives in EBM?Gordon Guyatt is a McMaster University Distinguished Professor. His work has focused on Evidence-Based Medicine and promoting high-quality healthcare without financial barriers for all Canadians. His Order of Canada citation acknowledges both contributions. My pseudonymous native informants from the illustrious realms of Science make the provocative case that medicine has become a quintessentially postmodern field. They attribute this development to the rise of Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) in the 1990s in Canada, which has occasioned (as its pioneers intended) a Kuhnian paradigm shift in the field. After surveying the spread and impact of the EBM revolution, we explore its after-effects in the Covid era. https://www.bmj.com/content/359/bmj.j5676 https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/article-abstract/1785467 https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0141076816649883
Okay...finally -Here is Part 2 of our conversation with Ricky and the Calcium crusade... We hit on more aspects concerning the Ground force - Aeromedical interaction, Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) and Environmental -Based Medicine...and Experienced-Based Medicine
TOTAL EM - Tools Of the Trade and Academic Learning in Emergency Medicine
Our guest today (the first for PA month here on TOTAL EM) is Adrian Banning. She is an Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) guru and is also on the JAAPA Podcast with a previous guest, Kris Maday. Today though she is here to talk to us about breaking bad news. Something most of us are experienced with but one thing few of us do well. We combine EBM and "soft skills" to better care for our patients and families in this very difficult time.
TOTAL EM - Tools Of the Trade and Academic Learning in Emergency Medicine
Happy Fourth of July! Today we are joined by Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) rock star Ken Milne who is known for the Skeptics' Guide to Emergency Medicine (SGEM) blog and podcast. He has been a major mentor to the TOTAL EM project and to celebrate our 50th podcast he agreed to join us for a detailed discussion on FOAMed and EBM. Both SGEM and TOTAL EM are part of the Free and Open Access to Medical Education (FOAMed) movement.
Over the last two decades, the Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) movement has transformed medical science, pushing doctors to rely less on intuition or "common wisdom" in choosing treatments, and more on evidence from studies. Sounds great -- but has EBM become a victim of its own success? This episode features John Ioannidis, Stanford professor of medicine, health and policy, and statistics, and author of the famous paper, "Why Most Published Research Findings are False." John and Julia discuss how EBM has been "hijacked," by whom, and what do do about it.
Dr Jamie Fox (Duke University) joins Dr Mike in the PediaCast Studio for a discussion on Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM). We define EBM, explain its importance, and identify barriers that prevent its incorporation into practice. We cover 4 tools which make it easier to bring EBM to the point-of-care, including PubMed, Cochrane, DynaMed and Google Scholar… and we provide opportunity for listeners to follow along and practice using these tools. We also describe ways practitioners can champion EBM with their colleagues and patients/families. We hope you can join us!
Drs. Hirsch, Meyers and Jayaraman discuss the evolving and at times complex role of Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) in contemporary neurointerventional practice. The discussants contrast EBM with Comparative Effectiveness Research and the role it plays in coverage decisions. The podcast directly links to the following articles: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24578482?dopt=AbstractGeneral considerations:http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22166819http://jnis.bmj.com/content/4/1/11.longWhy standards:http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21994097http://jnis.bmj.com/content/1/1/5.long
