Wendy has a problem with rules. But some rules matter. Like the rules of improv. Naomi Snieckus loves those. And so does Maureen. Naomi talks about Improv Rule #1: Yes, And. About the importance of supporting a partner in comedy or drama or a podcast. And yes, in life.Naomi started doing improv at Second City in Toronto, and is now an actor, producer, writer and director. She was on “Mr. D", “Degrassi”, “Pretty Hard Cases”, and voices a ton of cartoons. During “Me Too” she launched The Firecracker Department which supports creative women and non-binary people. She's also hosting a new podcast with Amanda Brugel called the Blaze Sessions. They are very supportive partners! A Video version of this episode appears here. A transcript of the episode is here. At Naomi Sniekus's Firecracker Department annual TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) brunch, I met Sarah D. McCarthy and offered to interview her. Afterward, she came to meet me at the Hyatt Regency for a chat. I learned about why she let her hair go gray during the lockdowns and how that's affecting her acting career. An award-winning filmmaker and the co-founder of Hungry Eyes Media (with her partner Sudz Sutherland), she is the first ever recipient of the Firecracker Department's Red Point Award, going to women over 50 who are still creating incredible content and leading the way in out community. After a life-changing health scare in her early twenties, Jennifer learned to go forth confidently in the direction of her dreams to direct and produce, and never look back. Throughout her incredible career, she shares with Naomi and Amanda how she is able to fully immerse herself in a story to help spark change, and how centering on a theme helps her pinpoint what the story will transform into. And through the trials, stress, and pressure, Jennifer is still able to live a life that is full of joy.
It's important to put in the good work...As we're deep in the heart of Toronto International Film Festival right now, it felt important to remind ourselves that there's more then just movies playing in theatres to be excited about. There's good work going on as our community comes together to make stories from all walks of life as accessible as humanly possible. That's where the Firecracker Department comes in...Firecracker Department started as a podcast and has grown into an international community of artistic women and non-binary artists igniting each other to take creative action through positivity, education, support and by providing a platform for our voices and stories. Since its start five years ago, it has grown into several departments including: Comedy Department, Script Department, Writing Department, Wellness Department, Social Justice Department and more are sparking in the future to create space for more women and non-binary artists to be heard. The community of Firecracker Department core members have branched out to Toronto, Vancouver, Los Angeles, New York, Texas, Nashville, Dubai and the UK. The core members are running panels, events, workshops to pursue their goal of getting more women and non-binary artists in creative positions.Tomorrow they are having their virtual TIFF brunch and handing out their Blaze award to Jo Vannicola for their work not only in front of but behind the screen for all their continuing efforts in making the entertainment industry a more inclusive place. Visit the Firecracker Department's Facebook for the Virtual Red Carpet at 1PM before their brunch. We had the distinct pleasure to talk with Naomi and Jo, not only about the origins of the Firecracker Department, but the significance of the Blaze award, highlighting all these issues during something like TIFF, pronouns and remembering to have all our hearts in the right place when it comes to accepting diversity in storytelling.

Firecrackers, It’s been a big week for the Toronto theatre community. For those of you that don’t know, Albert Schultz, who was the AD at one of the countries largest theatre companies, Soulpepper, was accused of sexual harassment in the theatre. Four amazingly bold, brave women; Diana Bentley, Patricia Fagan, Kristin Booth, and Hannah Miller came forward with their stories. It’s been an intense, heart breaking time and I have searched with what to say about the whole thing. I decided to leave this note for the Firecracker Department members and not to have a guest this week. Instead, I want to make YOU my guest. Get YOUR voice out there. Send me your emails, voice files, tweets with what advice you would give your younger self, If you want to leave your name and where you’re from you can, but you don’t have to! firecrackerdepartment@gmail.com. I know your words will ring so loud with our community that our hearts will get stirred into action. With love, Naomi
