This week on the Richard Crouse Show we meet Linwood Barclay. He is the best selling author of thrillers like “No Time for Goodbye,” “The Accident”, which was turned into the six-part television series in France and “Never Saw It Coming” adapted into a movie, starring Eric Roberts and Emily Hampshire, have made him a favourite writer of thrillers. So much so, that Stephen King calls him, “a terrific writer. 'A suspense master. 'In a class of his own.' Today we're talking about his latest novel, “Look Both Ways.” In the book he envisions a world in which automotive technology outpaces our wildest dreams—and our darkest nightmares—as self-driving cars become sentient. Then, we'll meet Yannick Bisson. You know him from sixteen seasons as Detective William Murdoch on the very popular “Murdoch Mysteries.” But did you know he is also a director? We talk about “Baking All the Way,” a new holiday movie he directed and stars in, playing in theatres for one night on December 5, then premiering on Super Channel Heart & Home on December 10.

Fab Filippo & Gray Powell describe the humour & humility required to care & create in a messy world

Fab Filippo is an actor, screenwriter, and playwright. Most recently, he co-created, wrote, and directed the critically acclaimed comedy-drama “Sort Of,” for CBC and HBO Max. A winner of a slew of awards, Sort Of (https://gem.cbc.ca/media/sort-of/) is the main focus here, but Fab has also worked on a huge array of shows and films over the years, from his work writing and directing Save Me, to co-writing the true crime indie film Perfect Sisters. Gray Powell has worked all over Canada with various theatre companies, but has spent the most time acting at The Shaw Festival where he is a Festival star. His most recent film and television credits include “Hudson & Rex,” “Designated Survivor,” “Murdoch Mysteries,” and the Netflix film ARQ. My conversation with Fab and Gray grew out of an article that I just wrote for CBC that focuses on this fantastic show Sort Of, a series focused on the character of Sabi, played so captivatingly by Bilal Baig, who is also the show's co-creator, executive producer and writer. My article talks about my experience as the father of a transgender kid in the 21st century, and about how the show challenges us as caregivers to consider the emotional labour that kids, and especially gender nonconforming kids, often have to do to support their parents. The show has caused me to think about some of my own ideas around identity. It is remarkable for the ways it does this through subtle storytelling, rather than by being didactic or “preachy.” And this is one of the things that we talk about a lot in this conversation: how does a show that's built, in part, out the parameters of trying to find arts funding in Canada create a tone that is “gentle” and “subtle,” without losing its edge or abandoning its radical commitment to honesty, gender and racial inclusion, intersectionality, and queer love? Fab senses that one defining feature of the new Canadian flourishing of progressive television might be an interest in “cross-sectionality.” At a couple of points here Fab talks about how he's “thrilled by existence of this interview with Gray” because of the original genesis of Sort Of: to make a show about how each of us is going through transitions, and about how “not all transitions are alike.” The three of us talk about what it means to try to constantly learn and be humble as dads, to negotiate “ego” and be adaptable. Fab's point is well-taken here: he reminds us that “you cannot engineer your child.” Just like, as an artist, they have to “let go of… perfectionism,” being a parent means relinquishing control of your kids and giving them “room to be new.” The result, with Sort Of, is a show where every character has a distinct voice and three dimensions, the humour feels organic, and yet the overall tone feels cohesive. A rare feat. And one accomplished, they say, but creating a creative environment that respects difference and that seeks difference.

Murdoch Mysteries fans will spot Daniel Maslany crossing Rex's path. There's also a two-part storyline taking place not in St. John's, where the series is set, but in Northern Ontario.Reardon, a Halifax native, played football for Mt. Allison before venturing into acting. His credits prior to Hudson & Rex include Vancouver productions Continuum and Arctic Air. He even survived an early stint on Trailer Park Boys!It did seem pre-ordained that he would eventually star on Hudson & Rex; he and his wife welcomed their first born -- named Hudson -- just days before he was offered the part. The new season will pick up the will-they or won't they romantic storyline between his detective character Charile and Sarah (Mayko Nguyen). Will they share custody of doggie detective Rex (Diesel vom Burgimwald)?Reardon also talks about the sudden loss last April of Paul Pope, the executive producer who was a major force in the Newfoundland film and TV industry. "It's amazing how many people on the show got their start from Paul," says Reardon. As for John's all-time favourite TV theme song, you kinda had to figure he would pick music from another show about a dog. Writer-director-showrunner Peter Mitchell snuck me into a couple of episodes of one of his hit shows -- and yet he still talks to me! On this podcast, we have a great conversation about Murdoch Mysteries, back for a 16th season starting September 12 on CBC.We also talk about the other hour-long Canadian TV drama he executive produces for Shaftesbury, Hudson & Rex. Mitchell supervises 24 episodes of Murdoch in Toronto, flies to St. John's, and cracks the whip on another 20 episodes of Rex. Some of his performers literally work like dogs!!So does Mitchell, who took over Murdoch as that series found new life on CBC after five years on Citytv. He opened up the storylines on that whodunnit, taking full advantage of all the historical possibilities (electric cars? Stan Laurel and Charlie Chaplin? William Shatner as Mark Twain?) and stretching his ensemble well past 200 episodes and beyond. We talk also about other highpoints in his career, which dates back to writing credits on The Campbells as well as Street Legal, Traders, Cold Squad, The Listener and Frankie Drake.  He even wrote lines for Mister T on the short-lived Canadian series T and T. I pity the fool who was the showrunner on that series!

New episode out now! We visit the Great White North with an episode of Murdoch Mysteries, season nine's “Raised on Robbery”. We debate whether the blatant anachronisms are charming or terrible, try to unravel the unnecessarily complicated robbery plot, and have some unflattering observations about the writing, acting, and editing. We also discuss the odd cleanliness of the sets, speculate about what other wild inventions Murdoch may have come up with, and get confused about the character relationships. (We did like the theme song…) Katy gets her serial killers mixed up, Carrie gets very, very salty, Maddy almost felt a feeling, and Mack practices his “NPC talks to police” voice. We also discuss the viability of baby whistles, come up with better robbery plans, learn about the Napoleon of Crime, and share a number of ways to call something “bland”. Two of us get real spicy about their dislike of this show, and one of us tries to defend it—with limited capacity to do so. Give it a listen to hear who is who! The sibling vibes are strong in this one! (We would also like to apologize to Canada - we know the show is beloved by many but we gotta be true to ourselves). Enjoy! TW: Child endangerment, orphaning NOTES: Katy was wrong about the rocket ship details - someone else came up with it and Murdoch just had to figure stuff out after the ship was discovered. It's S9E5 “24 Hours Til Doomsday”. The book Mack is referring to about Adam Worth is The Napoleon of Crime: The Life and Times of Adam Worth, Master Thief by Ben Macintyre

Xing The Gap, with Rick Miller

Improv fans, you're in for a treat, as Rick speaks to Colin Mochrie and Debra McGrath. Colin's about a big an improv star as you can get, with over 2 decades on the TV show Whose Line Is It Anyway?, both the UK and US versions. But he's not “Just for Laughs"... Colin's also done Shakespearean tragedy, and played a serial killer on Murdoch Mysteries. He's joined by his life partner Debra McGrath, an award-winning writer, producer and comedian, who co-starred with Colin in the CBC series Getting Along Famously. And as you'll see, they do get along famously as we talk about being "OK Boomered", making Mulroney: the Opera , master plasterers, life's twists and turns, laughing through tough times, helping their trans daughter choose a new name, free speech vs. hate speech, punching below your weight, hope in the younger generations, change in older generations, an improv game, and a game show.#BuildBridgesNotWallsXingTheGap.comBoomTheShow.comRickMiller.ca@rickmilleractor@xingthegap@colinmochriecolinmochrie.com

The Pepper & Dylan show is full of debates and we like to keep track of who comes out on top of them all. At the end of every week, we're going to break down who was right and who was wrong. We started doing it on the last break of the week on the live show, now we're bringing it to the podcast! 1) Should management acknowledge Dylan for showing up on time to work most days? 2) Does anybody watch Murdoch Mysteries? 3) Does anyone have carpet in their bathroom? 4) Is carpet in the bathroom a really bad idea? 5) Have you ever – for even a split second – thought about hiring a hitman? 6) Did Dylan call bylaw on Pepper 5-years ago over his basketball hoop?
