A call back to Holness
Question: Was PM Andrew Holness' Address to the UN General Assembly Inappropriate and Misplaced? Recently, Hon. Andrew Holness, Prime Minister of Jamaica, gave a speech to the UN General Assembly in New York, where he said illegal guns usually flow into the hands of marginalized youths in developing countries like Jamaica. But my question is, if the marginalized youths are poor and they cannot afford a legal gun, which for them is the only way out of poverty and provides a sense of power, then how do we expect to effectively stop the spiraling murder wave, reduce gun violence by minimizing the illegal flow of guns to this vulnerable groups without first dealing with their sense of powerlessness and their poverty? Moreover, if illegal guns usually flow into the hands of the poor, that is an observation that has been supported by studies that show the relationship between the gun, the illegal use of it in poor marginalized communities not just in Jamaica, but in black and brown communities all over the world. According to the story in the Jamaica Gleaner, entitled: “Holness enlist UN help to stem influx of illegal guns, murder wave,” PRIME MINISTER Andrew Holness has called for an international “war on guns” to end the influx of illegal weapons and epidemic of murders in Jamaica. “In the same way that a war on drugs is being prosecuted, in which we have been faithful partners in policing what comes through our waters or leaves our shores, there now needs to be a war on guns.” Holness pleaded as he addressed the 77th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York on Thursday. The Jamaican leader urged for pressure to be placed on international gun manufacturers to institute stronger measures to prevent the illegal flow of weapons into the hands of poor, marginalized youth in developing countries like Jamaica. “In the same way there is concern about illegal drugs on the streets of rich countries, there must be concern about guns on the streets of developing countries like Jamaica,” Holness asserted, (Hinds, L. 2022. Holness enlists UN help to stem influx of illegal guns, murder wave | News | Jamaica Gleaner (jamaica-gleaner.com) This request by the PM seems absolutely ridiculous and inappropriate. It looks childish and pathetic. Jamaica doesn't make its own laws about what comes into its own country. It does not have any control over its importers and suppliers of goods and services? Further, guns don't kill people, people kill people! Moreover, to appeal to rich countries having guns on their streets as a way to provide support for equal cause for concern of guns on Jamaican streets is far-fetched incomparable. How is he here comparing apples with tomatoes? So where does the answer lie? The answer resides in reducing poverty and raising incomes and providing more opportunities. However, this can only happen when Jamaica becomes more competitive and expands its capabilities which will need short term investments over the long-term with some sacrifices coupled with investments in education to make every Jamaica not just literate but competitive. We need to get the diaspora more involved and become more strategic with this endeavor. To make a request like this at such an even is a missed opportunity and an inappropriate request. That request can be handled by the local as it is a local issue that speaks to local laws and protections. We need funds investments to increase Jamaica's capabilities and that is what we should always ask for. Put your priorities where the greatest needs reside. Possum is a 2018 British psychological horror film written and directed by Matthew (Garth Marenghi) Holness in his feature film debut, starring Sean Harris and Alun (Krull) Armstrong. It centres on a disgraced children's puppeteer who returns to his childhood home and is forced to confront the abuse and trauma he suffered there.Possum is an adaption of Holness' short story of the same name, published in the horror anthology The New Uncanny: Tales of Unease, and partially inspired by the theories on the uncanny by Sigmund Freud. Holness soon forgot about the idea of adapting the story until he had begun working on developing a possible horror film. As a fan of the horror genre, Holness stated he much preferred horror films that resonate with the audience and force them to reflect on the experience afterward. Possum's visual style was inspired by public information films Holness saw in his youth. Other inspirations include Dead of Night (covered by us in the mothership show), George Romero's Martin, and German Expressionist films. Filming began in Norfolk, with additional filming taking place in Great Yarmouth and Suffolk. The film's score was composed by sound effects and experimental electronic music studio The legendary Radiophonic Workshop, and featured unreleased material by the studio's original member Delia Derbyshire. This marked their first soundtrack purposely constructed for a feature film.In addition to garnering multiple awards and nominations, it was generally praised by critics for Harris' performance, the film's atmosphere, score, and unsettling imagery, though the story prompted several negative reviews. The show focuses on fictional horror author Garth Marenghi (played by Matthew Holness) and his publisher Dean Learner (played by Richard Ayoade), characters who originated in the Garth Marenghi's Fright Knight stage show. The series is presented as a special release of the fictional television series Darkplace. Within the canon of the show, Darkplace was produced in the 1980s, but failed to gain an audience anywhere but Peru, eventually becoming a lost series. Saved footage has recently resurfaced, with Marenghi & co. republishing with the intent of gaining interest from a modern audience. The "original footage" of the show is intercut or bookended with commentary from many of the "original" cast, where characters such as Marenghi and Learner reflect on what it was like to make the show. Darkplace parodies the fashion, special effects, production gaffes, and music of low-budget '80s television, as well as the modern practice of including commentary tracks on DVD releases of old films and television shows. Darkplace was broadcast in a late-night timeslot, with very little advertising, and met with poor viewing figures.[1] It built up a significant internet following, leading Channel 4 to repeat the series and produce a DVD release. In 2005, Channel 4's Film Four asked Holness and Ayoade to write a script for a film version of their programme.[2] The show was later broadcast in the United States on the Sci-Fi Channel and Adult Swim[1] and is available to stream on Peacock.

This week's guest is one of the finest, most driven big carp anglers that have ever cast a rod and he's an incredible storyteller to boot, it's none other than former British Carp Record holder Oz Holness. When it comes to Oz there's one thing that sets him apart from allot of other anglers and is undoubtably the reason for such an incredible host of big special carp captures over the years and that is his mindset. He talks about exactly what mindset is for him, what it means in an angling sense and being in the fire service for over twenty years shaped this. He talks about “wanting it” which meant that despite a missus and a full time job he would ensure that he visited the lake as much as possible even if it was just to look at the water for an hour and not fish. Over his career he has captures some truly awe inspiring jaw dropping carp form venues big and small. Oz shares his thoughts on bait, rigs, spots, watercraft and his fishing on limited time. The real stand out jewels in the crown of Oz's captures have to be the Burghfield Common as well as the British Record at the time in the shape of Two Tone from Conningbrooke. He talks in incredible details about the lead up to these captures and exactly what it took for him to achieve these goals despite working full time.Being a Kent local for all his life Oz also talks about his friendships with other anglers such as Paul Forward and Si bater who helped him developed as an angler and see that nothing was impossible. He recalls the capture of three incredible full scaled mirrors from Kent off the back of him applying himself to the lake where these fish resided. Finally, Oz talks openly about his future and what still drives him to target the most tough, sort after special carp out there despite the changes that have been seen over the years in angling. This podcast is a true insight into the very elite of carp anglers and shows first-hand the passion, sacrifice and believe it take to capture these super special creatures but by the same token how this can very much be done by the average working man as Oz has shown time and time again.

Hungry Eyes also expanded its focus to develop content for mobile users as well. As a company with its own distinct mission plan, Hungry Eyes seeks to inspire and entertain! The History Channel Canada and Hungry Eyes Media Group announce the groundbreaking four-part docuseries, BLK: An Origin Story, premiering Saturday, February 26 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The limited series, consisting of four 60-minute episodes, reveals the deep historic impact of Black presence in Canada. Executive produced by Jen Holness and Sudz Sutherland, BLK: An Origin Story is helmed by Hungry Eyes' award-winning production team, who takes viewers on a nationwide journey through time to discover the untold story of Black people in Canada and their legacy, which dates back to 1608. BLK: An Origin Story is steeped in riveting, enduring, and multi-faceted historical Black Canadian narratives. Each episode transports viewers to a different Canadian location and provides chronologically significant insights into the consequences of Black presence in the areas. Featured outposts include Nova Scotia, Ontario, British Columbia, and Quebec. The series also highlights the legacy of Black contributions to the larger story of Canada itself, dating back to when explorer Mathieu de Costa first set foot on shore, more than 400 years ago. BLK: An Origin Story acts as an immersive and informative chapter of Black Canadian history, elevating remarkable Black Canadians previously unacknowledged in mainstream social, academic, and cultural circles, normalizing their unique stories as a matter of general record. “As Canadian creatives, BLK: An Origin Story embodies our professional mission to champion fresh, and authentic perspectives toward storytelling. We crossed the country and spoke, listened, and learned. The result is four hours of programming that resets the understanding of Black history in Canada. It was important for us to deliver the series as a comprehensive, multi-layered, multi-disciplinary, and essential Canadian journey. We are grateful to the stalwarts, knowledge keepers, and storytellers from Black Canadian communities and locations from Vancouver to Halifax, with Owen Sound, Amherstburg, Windsor, and Montreal as points in between. They've shared the immense generational experiences and events documented in each episode. We view history, and Black contribution to Canadian history as a defining part of Canada's overall identity, from both an inward and outward gaze,” said Jennifer Holness, Executive Producer, Hungry Eyes Media Group. “It is a crucial time in our country's history to reflect on and share the important Black narratives that influenced our nation,” said Lisa Godfrey, Senior Vice President of Original Content and Corus Studios. “We are proud to partner with the talented storytellers at Hungry Eyes Media who have developed this must-see and influential docu-series.” “Black people are entitled to know how they have taken up space in Canada, going back to the beginning of how the country's identity has been shaped. The historic learnings that we share in this documentary series are vitally important for our communities since we cannot move forward without acknowledging our tremendous contributions to Canada's past,” said Sudz Sutherland. “In shedding these lights, the series contributes to the larger societal conversation toward dismantling systemic racism.” BLK: An Origin Story elevates the unsung heroes who substantially contributed to Canada's nation-building and to Black Canadian history. The series shines a spotlight on the origins of diverse and deeply entrenched Black Canadian experiences, which range from being transported, escaped, or freely traveled within Canada. Part history book, part geography lesson, each of the four episodes leverages compelling footage, art, locations, archival materials, and interviews from some of the country's best known and under-known experts of Black Canadian lore, facts, and pedagogy. The list of authors, academics, musicians, historians, community leaders, activists, and elders include George Elliot Clarke, Lawrence Hill, Charmaine Nelson, El Jones, May Q Wong, and Stephanie Allen, among others. Hello and welcome to rabble radio. It's Friday, February 4, 2022. I'm your host, Breanne Doyle. Thanks for tuning in. rabble's got it's finger on the beat of the issues that matter to you. If you're curious about the latest news in Canadian politics, labour, environment, or social justice – you've come to the right place to find the stories that matter to you. Free of corporate influence. This week, rabble recognizes the first week of Black History Month. We also continue our coverage of the so-called “Freedom Convoy 2022” as it unfolds in Ottawa. As well, Amnesty International asserts Israel is guilty of the crime of apartheid against Palestinians. Is it finally time for international intervention? We'll dive into all those stories and more, a bit later on our show. First - we present to you a conversation between Professor Amina Mire and documentary filmmaker Jennifer Holness to discuss Holness' new documentary: Subjects of Desire. Subjects of Desire investigates the cultural shift in North American beauty standards towards adopting Black female aesthetics and features. The documentary exposes the deliberate and often dangerous portrayals of Black women in the media. Subjects of Desire attempts to deconstruct what we understand about race and explores the power behind beauty. The film premiered on TVO on February 1. Mire is an associate professor at Carleton University. Her research interests include interdisciplinary analysis and critical research in gender and the cinema, anti-racist/anti-colonial research, political thought, and women and health. Holness is a director, writer and producer living in Toronto. Her recent work includes the award-winning documentary Stateless and the Shoot the Messenger tv series. In 2021, she was the recipient of the Women in Film and Television's Creative Excellence Award. She is a key part of numerous committees including the chair of the Black Screen Office and co chair of The Canadian Independent Screen Fund for BPOC Creators. This week, Mire sat down with Holness to discuss Subjects of Desire, and touched on their own experiences of confronting the beauty standards and harmful stereotypes of Black women. Here is a snippet from that conversation. Take a listen. (interview - 20 minutes) That was Professor Amina Mire and director and writer Jennifer Holness, talking about Subjects of Desire. Thanks very much for that, Amina and Jennifer. If you'd like to know more about this documentary, you can find Mire's review on rabble.ca. Now it's time for In Case You Missed It. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT This week, rabble marks the first week of Black History Month. Markiel Simpson kicks off coverage with a piece that argues African, Caribbean and Black Canadians should be celebrated all year, not only during Black History Month. While the significant contributions made by African, Caribbean and Black Canadians - the ACB diaspora - need to be recognized, undoing centuries of systemic racism and oppression cannot be restricted to only one month. Also this week, Natasha Darling shares how Black sex workers are leading intersectional movements for smashing injustice and the patriarchy, in her must-read column . Also this week, rabble's staff writers and contributors continued coverage of the so-called “Freedom Convoy 2022”. Karl Nerenberg, rabble senior politics reporter and Ottawa resident, shares what he and his Ottawa neighbours have been experiencing since the beginning of the protests last week, while the police stand idly by: “Never before has a protest movement in the Canadian capital been accompanied by hundreds of massive, multi-wheel rigs, spewing clouds of noxious diesel fumes, and blaring their oversized horns in a 24-hours-a-day cacophonic symphony,” he writes, noting the hateful signage and behaviour of some associated to protest. The presence of all these trucks and protestors poses a challenge the city - one that has experienced thousands of protests - “has never before had to deal with.” While local residents fume knowing what would happen to them if they simply parked illegally, no doubt indigenous and other activists are asking where the capitals' usual security forces - so often immediately on the scene for vigils and demonstration - are? Nerenberg points out that the Ottawa police, “with reinforcements from across the country, are claiming that they are doing their best to keep the peace, but are treading carefully in dealing with the protesters.” David Climenhaga was one of the first to break the story of the far right involvement in the convoy's GoFundMe page, where this protest began online. This week he ponders whether some of those funds might go towards damages from the protests. Climenhaga has also been keeping the spotlight on Alberta's political leaders - and reporting on their involvement in the protests and in far right ideology. He ponders, for example, whether Premier Jason Kenney encouraged the copycat Coutts blockade which he now condemns? It would be ironic, Climenhaga writes, if Kenney's dubious claim a week ago that Ottawa's vaccine mandate for cross-border truckers was leading to empty shelves in grocery stores, ended up being what is causing real shortages. While the protestors in Ottawa have been calling for Justin Trudeau's departure, it was another leader who was ousted this week. Karl Nerenberg reflectsErin O'Toole's eviction as leader of the Conservative party - and shares his thoughts on the prospects for Pierre Poilievre, the MP for Carleton, who inspires enormous loyalty from a large swath of the Conservative base. Some observers say Poilievre would provide Donald Trump-style leadership in Canada; and like Trump, Poilievre plays politics only in one emotional key – the key of anger. And it seems anger – Nerenberg writes – “is exactly what the Conservative base wants from a leader.” Last Saturday was the fifth anniversary of the January 29th Quebec mosque shooting. In her column, Monia Mazigh considers this first National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia. Now more than ever, Mazigh says, “it is important to ask ourselves: what has Canada done to prevent future Islamophobic attacks? I am afraid to say: very little.” In international news, rabble contributor and board member, Thomas Woodley writes that the report published by Amnesty International on Monday - asserting Israel is guilty of the crime of apartheid against Palestinians - means there should be no further question that international intervention is required. Amnesty joins a long list of Israeli human rights organizations who have also found Israel guilty of the crime against humanity. Those groups include Gisha, Breaking the Silence, Peace Now Israel, and more. Canadian leaders, he argues, must now respond. Also: Don't miss out! rabble's Off the Hill political panel is back on Thursday, February 10, 2022 at 7:30pm EST. This month's theme: Whose budget is it, anyway? Join hosts Libby Davies, Robin Browne, and guests MP Leah Gazan, CCPA economist David MacDonald, activist, poet and scholar El Jones and Karl Nerenberg. They'll be taking your questions and discussing the parliamentary agenda including the upcoming federal budget. Will major political moments like the turmoil in the Conservative party or the truck convoy make a difference to how the budget plays out in parliament? Tune in or join the live audience on zoom to find out. Register now to join this free event, via Zoom. The last thing I'd like to leave you with, listeners, is this: we are in the homestretch of our annual fundraiser, and we have a special offer for all of you rabble radio listeners! Even after completing Bachelor's and Master's degrees, Black professionals often face additional obstacles to getting employment commensurate with their formal education. We explore this problem in a 2-part series with Jason Dean Holness, Human Resources Specialist and Talent Acquisition Manager.
Sam is such an inspiring young man, along with his coach and father Tony. I was first put in touch with Tony and Sam through Cervélo, where we quickly decided it would be amazing opportunity to record a podcast with both Sam and Tony, talking about Autism and how it really is Sam's superpower. Enjoy this one, it was pretty inspiring to record and have the conversation. But real change happens at the local level, it happens at a community level. People need to start taking care of each other. Once people start taking care of each other they are able to empathize with each other and learn about each other." - Zora Holness — Generation Hope is a podcast from connect.faith; which is a new worshiping community of the Presbyterian Church (USA) unbound by location coming together at the intersection of creativity, spirituality and justice.
