After 10 years, the filmmaker and author Alex R. Johnson returns to the podcast. Alex R. Johnson is a writer and filmmaker who lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. His feature film "Two Step" premiered to critical acclaim at SXSW in 2014 and went on to become a New York Times Critic's Pick. His screenplay "Northeast Kingdom" was selected for the 2016 Black List, and his screenplay "Any Rough Times Are Now Behind You" was selected by the Austin Film Society's Artist Intensive lab where he was mentored by late director Jonathan Demme. He also wrote the screenplay adaptation of Ernest Tidyman's novel, "Big Bucks", for Pascal Pictures/Sony Entertainment. Johnson's family hails from the Andes of Ecuador, where their 100-year-old dairy farm still operates. Fans of Richard Price, Charlie Huston, and Jonathan Lethem will love this coming-of-age New York-centric detective noir debut from esteemed filmmaker and screenwriter Alex R. Johnson. New York City, 1998. New York is changing around Nico Kelly, and he can feel more coming. A private investigator and self-proclaimed photographer, Nico is stuck in a loop of city contracts and self loathing. What little middle class there was is disappearing—long-standing factories are moving out and taking their reliable neighborhood jobs with them, and Mayor Rudy Giuliani's police force has the streets in a stranglehold.  Nico spends his days looking for fraudsters while taking photos of municipal employees on disability claims. He spends his nights trying to get rid of the nagging feeling that his day job makes him a professional snitch—traversing dive bars, playing pinball, and fighting through the haze of hungover mornings and blurry evenings.Pushing thirty years old and feeling split between his American and Latin heritage, between youth and adulthood, Nico finds himself at a precipice—who is he and what should he become? When Nico witnesses and records a murder during one of his insurance fraud investigations, bodies start to turn up all around him and he's forced into solving a mystery he didn't ask to solve. Humorous, gritty, and real, Nico's search for what it means to be human takes him through the deepest and darkest parts of New York City.

New Patreon supporter Greig has reached back into the 1970's for his first pick and it from the year of the gang movie, 1979's The Wanderers! The production of The Wanderers (1979), directed by Philip Kaufman and co-written with his wife Rose Kaufman, was an adaptation of Richard Price's debut novel. Set in the Bronx of 1963, the film aimed to authentically portray the era's street gang culture. Filming took place on location in various Bronx neighborhoods, including Fordham Road, the Grand Concourse, and Pelham Parkway. Cinematographer Michael Chapman, known for his work on Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, contributed to the film's dynamic visual style. The cast featured emerging talents such as Ken Wahl, John Friedrich, Karen Allen, Toni Kalem, and Tony Ganios.Despite not achieving significant box office success upon its release, The Wanderers garnered critical acclaim for its vivid depiction of adolescence and gang life. Over time, it developed a cult following, appreciated for its blend of nostalgia, pathos, and drama. The film's soundtrack, featuring a selection of late 1950s and early 1960s rock and roll, further enhanced its period authenticity. In 1996, Warner Bros. re-released the film theatrically in the United States, reflecting its enduring appeal. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world teetering on the edge of innocence and rebellion, The Wanderers takes you back to 1963 Bronx, where leather jackets were armor and gangs ruled the streets like teenage warlords. Meet Richie and his crew — not just tough guys, but kings of the block — navigating high school, heartbreak, and turf wars in a city simmering with change. As rival gangs clash and the world around them begins to shift, these boys must face the end of adolescence and the beginning of something far more dangerous… adulthood. Get ready for fists, friendship, and the fight to find your place — this fall… The Wanderers walk alone.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

The Written World was the Scottish Poetry Library's London 2012 project. To mark the Olympics, we launched a scheme to find a poem for each of the 204 countries taking part, which were then broadcast on BBC Radio. In October 2012, with the project over, we took the chance to look back on The Written World with its project manager Sarah Stewart. We also talked to Richard Price, whose poem ‘Hedge Sparrows' was chosen to represent Team GB, and William Letford, who the SPL asked to write a poem marking the end of the tournament. A trio of poets is rounded out by Mariama Khan, a poet representing Gambia at Poetry Parnassus, another international event linked to the Olympics.

The front window has been well decorated by mom and dad, the Polar Expresses have been ordered, and it is officially Holiday Season. So, what books are you going to buy for your friends and families? Well, let us tell you: - "James," by Percival Everett, Hannah's pick for book of the year (even if it didn't win the Booker). - "Orbital," by Samantha Harvey, which Sam somehow hasn't read yet, but is about astronauts and what it's like to be human (also, it's "James S A Corey," the fake name of two guys who wrote the Expanse series, not "S A Andrews" who doesn't seem to be a person).  - "Lazarus Man," by Richard Price, which should be big, by all rights, but who knows? Seems like a good book for literary dudes. - "The Serviceberry," by Robin Wall Kimmerer, which is great for the right open-minded reader. They have to be anti-capitalist, probably.  - "The Backyard Bird Chronicles," by Amy Tan, who is very much alive despite having been in a band with Stephen King in the 1990s, we think. We also use the word "flexi-bound" in describing this book.  - "The Boston Globe Story of the Celtics," by Chad Finn, who really lucked out with the Cs winning the championship just as he was finishing up.  - "Why We Love Football," by Joe Posnanski, a follow-up to "The Baseball 100," which is easily digestible and fits with the attention spans of teenaged boys.  - "Be Ready When the Luck Happens," by Ina Garten, a memoir by the super-famous chef, who Sam has never encountered in any way for some reason. This involves a sidebar on Martha Stewart. - "Heartbreak Is the National Anthem," by Rob Sheffield, which is shaping up to be one of the first important examinations of what Taylor Swift means for the future of popular music.  - "Small Things Like These," by Claire Keegan, which is going to be even huger, now that there's a movie.  - "Say Nothing," by Patrick Radden Keefe, which is going to be even huger, now that there's a limited series.  - "Wicked," by Gregory Maguire, which is going to be even huger, now that there's a movie, and may get you to buy others of his books, which will likely disappoint you.  - "The Women," by Kristen Hannah, which is emerging as maybe Hannah's most important book, dealing with the Vietnam War as it does and speaking to women about that time in a unique way.  - "Impossible Creatures," by Katherine Rundell, which is emerging as the best book for middle schoolers of the season.

In December 2018, we meet Rudy Coyle, a bar owner's son from Flushing, Queens, in the throes of a major quarter-life crisis. Cut out of the family business, he gets a Hail Mary job as a night doorman in a storied Park Avenue apartment building, where he comes under the wing of the family in 4E, the Cohens. Jacob "Jake" Cohen, the fast-talking patriarch, is one of a generation of financiers who made hundreds of millions of dollars in the cutthroat taxi medallion industry in the early 2000s, largely by preying on the hopes and dreams of impoverished immigrant drivers. As Jake tries to stop the bleed from the debt crisis now plaguing his company, clawing back his assets from an increasingly dangerous coterie of Russian American associates, Rudy gets promoted from doorman to errand boy to bodyguard to something like Jake's right-hand man. By turns a gripping portrait of corruption and a tender family dramedy, Atta Boy (U Iowa Press, 2024) combines the urban cool of Richard Price with the glossy, uptown charm of Taffy Brodesser-Akner. Here is a novel richly attuned to its time and place, but with something for everyone--high-wire prose and a story wedding ripped from the headlines, social realism with the warmth, angst, and humor of its indelible voices. Cally Fiedorek is the winner of a Pushcart Prize and an alumna of The Center for Fiction / Susan Kamil Emerging Writer Fellowship. Atta Boy is her debut novel. She lives in her native New York City with her family. Recommended Books: Kevin Berry, The Heart in Winter Paul Murray, Beesting Paul Murray, Skippy Dies Chris Holmes is Chair of Literatures in English and Associate Professor at Ithaca College. He writes criticism on contemporary global literatures. His book, Kazuo Ishiguro Against World Literature, is forthcoming with Bloomsbury Publishing. He is the co-director of The New Voices Festival, a celebration of work in poetry, prose, and playwriting by up-and-coming young writers. Learn more about your ad choices. Esperanza and Irwin welcome Columbia University Professor Alexander Stille, the author of The Sullivanians. The Sullivan Institute was a maverick psychoanalytic practice and cult that flourished on the Upper West Side from 1957 until 1991. Paramount to the Sullivanian doctrine was the rejection of the traditional nuclear family and monogamous relationships. “The Sullivanians told myparents that the worst thing a person can do is raise their own children,” said Lauren Olitski, the daughter of painter and patient Jules Olitski. The patients were high functioning, intelligent and creative people, including the singer Judy Collins and writer Richard Price. But its influence over Jackson Pollock, and its presence in the Barnes Landing section of Springs for a fascinating, and different, Our Hamptons Podcast.
