What really makes a football play end? Is it the whistle—or something else?In this episode of Whistle Talk, Mike D the Referee is joined once again by Coach Chip Seagle and Daniel Chamberlain for a detailed breakdown of NFHS Rule 4: The Ball in Play, Dead Ball, Out of Bounds, and Inadvertent Whistles. The crew dives into some of the most misunderstood concepts in football officiating, including forward progress, dead-ball mechanics, spotting the football, fair catches, kick plays, and what happens when an official accidentally sounds the whistle while the ball is still live.Along the way, the guys share real-life officiating and coaching stories, discuss how these rules impact strategy on Friday nights, and explain why every coach should understand the rules as well as the officials enforcing them.Plus, Daniel drops an interesting update about potentially joining the officiating ranks this season, while Coach Chip continues his mission of "weaponizing the rule book" to gain every possible advantage for his team.Whether you're a coach, player, official, or football fan, this episode will help you better understand one of the most important sections of the NFHS Football Rule Book.

Bjorn Ytlling...yeah he's the "Bjorn" of the group Peter, Bjorn and John...visits with us to discuss " Illegal Hit (Out of Bounds)," his first jazz album in like two decades under the moniker of "Yttling Jazz." Since Bjorn is in full jazz mode, he wanted to discuss "Money Jungle" that is credited to Duke Ellington but also includes jazz legends Max Roach and Charlie Mingus. Plenty of other discussion including The Radioheads, tugboats, Peter Hook, illegal hockey hits, taxi drivers inspiring a title to a song, and did you know that "Young Folks" was originally a jazz song?We don't discuss jazz all that often on this podcast so this was a nice detour. Stay connected with us at americangroundradio.com, on Facebook, and Instagram. You're listening to American Ground Radio with Louis R. Avallone and Stephen Parr. This is the full show for May 20, 2026. We open with what may be the most consequential immigration enforcement move in American history — and it has nothing to do with border walls or patrol agents. President Trump signed a new executive order directing the Treasury Department to scrutinize all financial activity tied to illegal immigration — targeting payroll tax evasion, hidden bank accounts, labor trafficking networks, underground cash economies, and the remittance systems that funnel billions of American dollars back to Mexico and other countries. We explain why going after the money is more powerful than any physical barrier, why Willie Sutton's famous explanation for robbing banks applies perfectly to why illegal immigration exploded, and why choking the financial infrastructure of the entire illegal immigration machine may be Trump's most consequential domestic policy move of either term. In our Top 3 Things You Need to Know, Thomas Massey lost his Kentucky congressional primary to former Navy SEAL Ed Gowran — in the most expensive House primary in American history at $25.6 million — after Trump endorsed Gowran and a district that voted for Trump by 85% finally ran out of patience with a congressman who spent his career blocking the agenda they elected him to advance. We note that Massey primaried himself out. Then Trump endorsed Texas AG Ken Paxton over incumbent Senator John Cornyn in a Senate runoff — and we raise the concern that while Paxton may win the primary, he may be a harder sell in the general against Democrat James Tallarico. And Alabama's gubernatorial race will be a Tuberville-Doug Jones rematch — and we think Tuberville wins easily as Kay Ivey is term limited out. Our American Mamas Teri Netterville and Kimberly Burleson tackle the question of whether women have forgotten how to age gracefully in America — from Demi Moore's skin-and-bones appearance at the Met Gala to Madonna's increasingly alarming transformations, from Lori Loughlin's well-done facelift to Helen Mirren as the gold standard of graceful aging. We also get into the GLP-1 revolution, the body positivity pendulum that swung hard in the other direction, and whether there is still room in American culture for a woman to be beautiful, powerful, and visibly her age at the same time. We play the Hakeem Jeffries clip from the Center for American Progress that should alarm every American regardless of party — the House Minority Leader saying out loud that the goal of House Democrats is not to persuade MAGA voters but to break them and break their spirit. We explain why that language is not just offensive but genuinely dangerous — because when the goal of politics shifts from persuasion to breaking half of your fellow citizens, you have crossed into territory that leads somewhere nobody should want to go. In our Digging Deep segment, the NAACP has launched a website called Out of Bounds urging black high school athletes to boycott colleges in the South — Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Clemson, Tennessee, Texas, and Texas A&M — because those states are redrawing congressional districts without race as a primary factor following the Supreme Court's ruling. We call it what it is — the NAACP demanding that 17-year-old black athletes from struggling families sacrifice life-changing scholarships for the Democrat Party's political agenda. No one's right to vote has been suppressed. Every vote still counts exactly one. The Supreme Court said you cannot draw districts based on race — and that is equal protection, not suppression. We also cover California's bizarre new rule allowing a biological female who finishes behind a transgender athlete to share the podium spot with the winner — which we describe as a participation trophy that accidentally acknowledges the injustice without having the courage to fix it. And the mother of the transgender athlete who won the race is upset about the rule. We note that the girl is the problem, apparently. For our Bright Spot, J.D. Vance filled in at the White House press briefing after the mosque attack in San Diego and was asked about religious violence in America. We play his answer in full — because it is one of the most theologically and constitutionally precise defenses of religious liberty we have heard from any public official in years. The right to find God through your own free will is the first right in the Constitution because you cannot force anyone to it. Violence against religious freedom is a violation of the laws of God, not just the laws of man. We call it a bright spot and mean it. And we close with 10-year-old Ernesto Hernandez — who wanted a 3D printer, whose mom told him to save up and buy it himself, who did chores until he had $500, bought the printer, started making keychains and fidget spinners, now runs three printers full time, is selling in local stores, and says he wants to invest in a house for his mom and him when he grows up. May your pursuit of happiness bring you joy. The NAACP is urging Black NCAA athletes to take a stand by boycotting certain college programs in Southern states, arguing new congressional maps weaken Black voting power. Through its “Out of Bounds” campaign, the group is asking recruits to refuse scholarships and commitments, while encouraging current athletes to transfer or use their platforms to push for fair redistricting. The move is designed to apply economic and cultural pressure on schools tied to states reshaping political districts. Is it fair to the student athletes? The NAACP and Congressional Black Caucus have launched a new campaign called “Out of Bounds,” urging Black athletes to boycott public universities in states accused of weakening voting rights protections after the Supreme Court's Louisiana v. Callais ruling. Civil rights leaders say the movement is aimed at challenging efforts they believe dilute Black political power. Today's Headlines: Thomas Massie lost his primary to Trump-backed Ed Gallrein, and Trump followed up by endorsing Ken Paxton over sitting Senator John Cornyn in Texas — picking the very crazy over the more traditional crazy, as is on-brand. Speaking of people who can't stop themselves, Trump demanded a DOJ investigation into Maryland's mail-in ballots over a completely routine reissuing error, because Maryland didn't vote for him and apparently that requires a federal explanation. On organized resistance, the NAACP launched an "Out of Bounds" campaign urging Black athletes to withhold support from college sports programs in states eliminating Black voting representation — a direct hit on the south's most lucrative programs, which should get their attention. Turning to the grift of the week, Trump's $1.776 billion "Antiweaponization Fund" keeps getting worse, with acting AG Todd Blanche confirming January 6th insurrectionists "wouldn't be excluded" from filing claims, P. Diddy's publicist already exploring eligibility, and the whole thing requiring only 2 out of 5 board members to approve any claim with zero fraud recourse — so that's airtight. On the war front, the Senate's war powers resolution finally passed 50-47 on the eighth attempt thanks to three absent Republicans and Bill Cassidy switching his vote the week after losing his primary, while the head of the International Energy Agency warned that global oil supplies are shrinking fast with only weeks of inventory left, right as fuel prices spike at the start of travel season — great timing all around. Closer to home, the Trump administration rolled back EPA limits on forever chemicals in drinking water affecting over 200 million Americans, a Brookings analysis found that roughly 75% of the 100,000 children separated from parents during Trump's immigration crackdown are likely US citizens, and Trump signed an executive order directing banks to vet customers for immigration status — though banks lobbied it down to advisory only, because their money is still green either way. And in the one piece of good news, 30,000 New York City hotel housekeepers secured a contract raising average pay to over $100,000 a year by 2034, which is the most functional thing to happen all week. https://teachhoops.com/ The "Ideal Playing Rotation" is one of the most debated topics in the coaching office. Is it better to play 10 or 11 players to keep everyone fresh and "happy," or do you tighten the circle to 7 or 8 to maximize chemistry and scoring efficiency? To build a championship-level rotation, you must move away from "fairness" and toward Strategic Utility. An ideal rotation is a living organism that balances the physical needs of your starters with the developmental needs of your bench, all while protecting the Standard of Excellence your program requires. In high-stakes high school basketball, the "Core 7" model is often cited as the gold standard for consistency. This involves your 5 starters plus two "interchangeable" bench players—usually a versatile guard and a physical "high-motor" forward. The Logic: Basketball is a game of rhythm. When you play 10+ players, no one (including your stars) can ever get "into the flow" of the game. A tight rotation allows your primary playmakers to understand the nuances of the opposing defense over 32 minutes. The "Value Over Replacement" ($VORP$): Using basic analytics, you can track your team's efficiency when your 8th or 9th man is on the floor. If the Effective Field Goal Percentage ($eFG%$) drops by more than $15%$ when the bench is in, your rotation is likely too deep. To avoid the "Second Quarter Slump," many elite coaches utilize a Staggered Substitution pattern rather than "platoon" swapping. The 4-Minute Mark: Avoid taking all five starters out at once. Instead, sub two players at the 4-minute mark of the first quarter. This ensures that at least three "stabilizers" are always on the floor to maintain the defensive standard and "Next Play" speed. The "Closer" Mentality: Your "Ideal Rotation" should be built backward from the final four minutes of the game. Who are the five players who have the highest "Late-Game IQ" and can execute a SLOB (Side-Line Out of Bounds) play under pressure? Those five must have enough "legs" left to finish. For a rotation to be "ideal," every player—from the leading scorer to the 12th man—must have Role Clarity. The Energy Giver: Your 6th or 7th man shouldn't be a "junior version" of your starter. They should bring a specific "tool" to the game (e.g., elite perimeter defense, offensive rebounding, or "floor-spacing" shooting). The "Relational Equity" Talk: You must have honest conversations in the "Truth Room" about minutes. If a player knows why they are playing 8 minutes instead of 18, and they understand how those 8 minutes contribute to the "Winning Standard," they are less likely to become a "culture leak." Research into high school athletics suggests that a player's Lateral Quickness and Shot Accuracy begin to degrade significantly after 6–8 minutes of continuous high-intensity play. The "Burst" Strategy: Instead of playing a starter for a full 16-minute half, try two 6-minute "bursts" with a 2-minute rest in between. This 120-second recovery allows the heart rate to stabilize and the "Decision IQ" to reset, leading to a higher $eFG%$ in the closing minutes of the half.
