Following his Sept. 29 investiture, Michigan State University President Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Ph.D., announced one of his first initiatives was to bring “MSU to Michigan,” and he did so by leading MSU's inaugural Spartan Bus Tour. We set out from campus Monday morning October 21 from Kellogg Center. (0:20) - President Guskiewicz opens the tour. (1:14) - Our first stop was in Mount Pleasant to visit the Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture and Lifeways. Eric Rodriguez is interim public relations director for the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. (4:20) - The next stop on the tour was in Le Roy to visit M&R Pickling, an Amish-owned canning company founded in 2013. The company is a client of the MSU Product Center, which supports innovation and growth for those in food, agriculture and natural resource sectors. Then it was on to a stop at the Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center, the largest National Guard training facility in the United States and the main training facility for the Michigan National Guard. At the stop, we met Michigan native Colonel Lucas J. Lanczy, the current commander of JMTC and got a brief welcome and history of the site to learn about the center's economic and environmental impact in the region. (6:15) - We remained in Grayling for our next stop at a somewhat hidden MSU jewel, Camp Wa Wa Sum. Brandon Baswell is service manager with IPF Real Estate. (8:13) - As we headed to Traverse City to spend the night, President G, as we affectionately called our leader on the tour, reflected on Day 1. (11:40) - Day 2 of the tour began in Traverse City at the Northwest Michigan Horticulture Research Center. The 137-acre Center was founded in 1979 by the area's fruit growers who wanted a research center of their own — a place that could help with unique issues that come with growing fruit in a region unlike any other — so they turned to MSU. Nikki Rothwell is an MSU extension specialist and coordinator of the center. (16:02) - After a group walk up part of the Sleepng Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Glen Arbor, we enjoyed lunch at Arcadia Bluffs Golf Club, a nationally renowned golf destination located on the shores of Lake Michigan, offering two championship golf courses. Founded in 1999, the golf club is built on the bluffs above the shore of Lake Michigan. Arcadia Bluffs is routinely rated a top 50 course in the country. We heard a presentation from club representatives and alumni who graduated from MSU's top turfgrass management program. Then it was on to Ludington State Park, a public recreation area located two miles north of Ludington, occupying 5,300 acres between the shores of Lake Michigan and Hamlin Lake. Ethan Theuerkauf, an MSU assistant professor and coastal geomorphologist described his research that focuses on how and why coastal landscapes, such as beaches, barrier islands and wetlands change over time. As we boarded the bus in Ludington on our way to the Martinez Farm in Conklin, we learned more about MSU Migrant Student Services. Day 2 of the tour ended with an evening reception at the Muskegon Museum of Art. Teresa Dunn, a Mexican American artist and MSU professor who has artwork on view in the museum joined the group and talked about her art. (19:25) - Day 3 of the tour began with a stop at Muskegon High School to learn about current and future pre-college programs in teaching and osteopathic medicine. (23:24) - Next was a stop in Rockford to view PFAS remediation sites. MSU's Center for PFAS Research, formed in 2020, is an interdisciplinary center that leads agricultural and natural resource PFAS research in Michigan and works with communities to create remediation strategies. (26:08) - Next, the Spartan Bus Tour headed to MSU's Grand Rapids Innovation Park that anchors the “Medical Mile” in Grand Rapids. It includes the MSU Grand Rapids Research Center, Doug Meijer Medical Innovation Building and Perrigo's North American corporate headquarters. MSU's College of Human Medicine has roots here as well, located in the nearby Secchia Center. Then it was off to visit Herman Miller, a subsidiary of MillerKnoll that produces office furniture, equipment and home furnishings. (28:07) - As our extraordinary driver, Tina Martin from Dean Trailways, began taking us to Hickory Corners and a visit to the Kellogg Biological Station, KBS interim director Jeff Conner hopped on the bus to prepare us for our visit to this MSU jewel. The W.K. Kellogg Biological Station, or KBS, is MSU's largest off-campus education complex and one of North America's premier inland field stations. ...

It's Wednesday, July 19th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark British Conservative Party suspends politician for opposing homosexuality Britain's Conservative Party suspended a Christian political leader for opposing sexually perverted lifestyles. King Lawal is a member of the North Northamptonshire Unity Council. During so-called “Pride Month” in June, he tweeted this: “Pride is not a virtue, but a Sin. Those who have Pride should Repent of their sins and return to Jesus Christ. He can save you.” Within days, seven organizations cancelled Lawal. He may also face a police investigation. The Christian Legal Centre is now representing him. Lawal's tweet included a reference to Isaiah 3:9 which says, “They declare their sin as Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to their soul! For they have brought evil upon themselves.” Brazil's Evangelical churches skyrocketed by 500% A new study by the University of Sao Paulo found the number of Evangelical churches in Brazil has grown by over 500%. The South American country had just over 7,000 Evangelical churches in 1990. The number grew to 100,000 in 2019. That's 17 new churches every day. The latest demographic data shows Brazil's Evangelical population doubled from 9% in 1990 to 22% in 2010. Researchers expect Evangelicals to become a majority in the now Catholic-majority nation. New over-the-counter contraceptive pill Last Thursday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Opill, the first over-the-counter contraceptive pill. Perrigo, a company based in Ireland, plans to ship the pills out starting next year with no age restrictions. The approval comes during a time of legal battles over abortion. States are introducing more limits on abortion after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2022. Meanwhile, the FDA's approval of the abortion pill mifepristone is facing legal challenges. Tanking public school scores Public school test scores have been tanking recently according to new data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Average scores for 13-year-olds declined four points in reading and 9 points in mathematics compared with the 2019-2020 school year. The research also found children are less likely to spend their free time reading now. This year, 14% of students report reading for fun almost every day, down from 17% in 2020 and 27% in 2012. Higher-performing students were more likely to read for fun regularly. Worldview correction: Canadian Reformed Church rejects female pastors Yesterday, The Worldview reported and linked to a Christian Post article that indicated that the Canadian Reformed Church ordained women to church office. After receiving an email from a Worldview listener from within that denomination, we doublechecked the Canadian Reformed Church website and discovered that The Christian Post story was incorrect. In Article 3 of their Church Order, the Canadian Reformed Church denomination explains, “Only male members who have made profession of faith and may be considered to meet the conditions as set forth in Holy Scripture (e.g., in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1) shall be eligible for office.” We apologize for the error. Court: Kentucky can now protect kids from transgender drugs and surgeries A U.S. District Court lifted an injunction last Friday on a Kentucky law that protects children from transgender drugs and surgeries. The law is now fully enforceable in the state. Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron said, “Today's ruling is a win for parents and children. … Moving forward, my office will continue to defend Senate Bill 150 and stand up for the right of children to be children, free from the influences of leftist activists and radical gender ideology.” Proverbs 20:26 says, “A wise king sifts out the wicked, and brings the threshing wheel over them.” South African Worldview listener finds newscast hopeful Peter Goede in Pretoria, South Africa wrote, "Good day Adam. I listen to your broadcasts often, mostly when driving long hours in my bakkie or ‘pickup' as you Americans call it, as I'm visiting farmers for my work. I enjoy the news from a Christian perspective with added Scripture explaining the situation. Here in South Africa, the radio news becomes extremely depressing. “But with The Worldview in 5 Minutes, there is hope, reminding us always that God is in control. Therefore, I now tend to listen only to your newscast and Kevin Swanson's Generations Radio. Thank you for the work you are doing. May God bless you, and give Him the glory!" Send your email of feedback to Adam@TheWorldview.com. Father & son from Indiana share their thoughts about The Worldview Matthew Dreyer in Greencastle, Indiana explained how his family started listening to the newscast. MATTHEW: “Well, we started really primarily listening during the pandemic. It was kind of a way to keep ourselves sane. And just to listen as a family. We'd go out for hikes. We lived in New Mexico at the time. We were part of an audio Bible ministry out there, and I was home a lot. It meant a lot to us to be able to know that The Worldview was safe. And when there are more mature stories, there's a transcript we can read ahead on for the kids. “We would listen to it while we hiked. We would listen to it as a family. We talk about the persecuted church and what's going on there. We talk about what God's doing all over the world. And we appreciate the biblical perspective that you put on everything. So, we want to support you.” And his 15-year-old son, Elijah, shared his thoughts. ELIJAH: “I enjoy learning about the current news from a Christian perspective. It's really the only way I get my news.” 13 Worldview listeners gave $8,565 Thirteen Worldview listeners donated toward our $80,000 goal by Monday, July 31st to keep this unique Christian newscast on the air for another year. Our thanks to Adam in Caldwell, Idaho who gave $20, Dick and Karen in Largo, Florida who gave $25, Joe and Sheryl in Westmoreland, Tennessee who gave $50, Steve in Loveland, Colorado who gave $100, and Darcy in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada who pledged $10/month for 12 months for a total gift of $120. We thank God for Marlowe in Freetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada who gave $200, Thomas in Gresham, Oregon who gave $250, and Tony and Jennie in Palmdale, California who pledged $25/month for 12 months for a total gift of $300. And we were touched by the kindness of David in Austin, Texas, Matthew in Marysville, Ohio, John in Sebastopol, California, and Vivia in Florida City, Florida – each of whom gave $600 as well as Thomas in South Bend, Indiana who gave $2,100. As promised, Shannan in Alexandria, Minnesota matched each of those last five donations with an additional $3,000! If you are the final Worldview listener to give a one-time gift of $600 or pledge $50/month for 12 months, Shannan will match your donation as well up to $600. Those 13 new donations add up to $8,565. Ready for our new grand total? Drum roll please. (Drum roll sound effect) $41,546.16 (Crowd cheering sound effect) In order to hit our $60,000 immediate goal by this Friday, July 21st, we need to raise $18,453.84. That would mean 15 more people to pledge $50/month and 30 more to pledge $25/month. Just go to TheWorldview.com and click on “Give” at the top right to give what the Lord is prompting you to donate. Make sure to select the “Recurring” tab if that's your wish. Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, July 19th in the year of our Lord 2023. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. Or get the Generations app through Google Play or The App Store. I'm Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com). Dr. Peter Brier and Nurse Practitioner Kelly McCormack discuss two new medications recently approved by the Food & Drug Administration. Opill is the first over-the-counter birth control pill that will become available in the US in 2024. Made by Perrigo, Opill is a progestin-only oral contraceptive; the concerns of the FDA, and potential side effects are examined. Leqembi (Lecanemab) is a new drug produced by the Japanese pharmaceutical firm Eisei. The monoclonal antibody medication is designed for early-stage Alzheimer's patients; the discussion focuses on Leqembi's potential, but also the question of what occurs as the disease progresses over time. https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-approves-first-nonprescription-daily-oral-contraceptivehttps://www.reuters.com/markets/europe/new-alzheimers-drug-holds-promise-adds-cost-pressures-medicare-2023-07-13/

FDA Advisory Board Approves First Over-the-Counter Birth Control Pill This week an FDA advisory board paved the way for the first over the counter birth control pill, with an unanimous decision 17-0. The FDA must accept the recommendation before the pills are available for sale, which is expected in a few months time. If approved, the progestin-only pill would be manufactured by the company Perrigo, under the brand name Opill. US Declares An End To The COVID-19 Public Health Emergency Just over three years ago, Alex Azar, then the Secretary of Health and Human Services, issued a declaration of a national public health emergency as a result of the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2. That declaration kicked off a cascade of nationwide funding, policies, and restrictions aimed at combating the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the three years that followed, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates over a million people in the US have died from COVID-19. Yesterday, although the virus is still circulating and people are still getting sick, that emergency declaration finally came to an end, after being renewed over a dozen times. A statement released by the Department of Health and Human Services said “COVID-19 is no longer the disruptive force it once was. Since January 2021, COVID-19 deaths have declined by 95% and hospitalizations are down nearly 91%.” Dr. Anthony Fauci, former head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, joins Ira Flatow to talk about where we go from here. Is life back to normal—or is there a new normal? What have we learned from the past three years about responding to future outbreaks? Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: [TIME magazine] DeepMind's CEO Helped Take AI Mainstream. Now He's Urging Caution (Perrigo, 2023), published by will on January 20, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Linkposting, tagging and excerpting in accord with 'Should pretty much all content that's EA-relevant and/or created by EAs be (link)posted to the Forum?'. He [Demis Hassibis] and his colleagues have been working toward a much grander ambition: creating artificial general intelligence, or AGI, by building machines that can think, learn, and be set to solve humanity's toughest problems. Today's AI is narrow, brittle, and often not very intelligent at all. But AGI, Hassabis believes, will be an “epoch-defining” technology—like the harnessing of electricity—that will change the very fabric of human life. If he's right, it could earn him a place in history that would relegate the namesakes of his meeting rooms to mere footnotes. But with AI's promise also comes peril. In recent months, researchers building an AI system to design new drugs revealed that their tool could be easily repurposed to make deadly new chemicals. A separate AI model trained to spew out toxic hate speech went viral, exemplifying the risk to vulnerable communities online. And inside AI labs around the world, policy experts were grappling with near-term questions like what to do when an AI has the potential to be commandeered by rogue states to mount widespread hacking campaigns or infer state-level nuclear secrets. In December 2022, ChatGPT, a chatbot designed by DeepMind's rival OpenAI, went viral for its seeming ability to write almost like a human—but faced criticism for its susceptibility to racism and misinformation. It is in this uncertain climate that Hassabis agrees to a rare interview, to issue a stark warning about his growing concerns. “I would advocate not moving fast and breaking things,” he says, referring to an old Facebook motto that encouraged engineers to release their technologies into the world first and fix any problems that arose later. The phrase has since become synonymous with disruption. That culture, subsequently emulated by a generation of startups, helped Facebook rocket to 3 billion users. But it also left the company entirely unprepared when disinformation, hate speech, and even incitement to genocide began appearing on its platform. Hassabis sees a similarly worrying trend developing with AI. He says AI is now “on the cusp” of being able to make tools that could be deeply damaging to human civilization, and urges his competitors to proceed with more caution than before. “When it comes to very powerful technologies—and obviously AI is going to be one of the most powerful ever—we need to be careful,” he says. “Not everybody is thinking about those things. It's like experimentalists, many of whom don't realize they're holding dangerous material.” Worse still, Hassabis points out, we are the guinea pigs. Thanks for listening. Medical conferences often are a platform to showcase new clinical trophies. But that wasn't the case for Merck at this year's European Society for Medical Oncology meeting. The Big Pharma presented a series of trial flops for its megablockbuster cancer immunotherapy, Keytruda. We'll discuss if the Merck checkpoint inhibitor has reached a bottleneck or if it was just bad luck. Also under discussion is the monkeypox test Emergency Use Authorization. Because monkeypox continues to spread in the U.S. and worldwide, the FDA granted its first EUA for a diagnostic test. This regulatory path was also used for COVID-19 tests. But the FDA learned a few lessons from the pandemic and hopes the new guidelines will help avoid the problems seen then. On this episode, HBW speaks to Victoria Nichols, project director of Free the Pill. Operated by Ibis Reproductive Health, a nonprofit advocacy organization focused on advancing sexual and reproductive autonomy worldwide, Free the Pill is a campaign supporting increased oral contraceptive access through OTC birth control pills. Ibis Reproductive is also working with Perrigo to submit an Rx-to-OTC switch NDA later this year for its progestin daily oral contraceptive. In the wake of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade on June 24, Nichols talks about the importance of advocating for OTC birth control, the limited availability of OTC oral contraceptives in the US, and the current legislation being introduced that would help ensure OTC birth control is covered by insurance.
CONTENT WARNING: The following episode includes discussion of physical and sexual abuse, including the abuse of children. Listener discretion is advised. In this flashback bonus episode first released as a Patreon bonus episode in August 2018 originally entitled "Abuse: Endorsed by Scripture?," Jaye discusses the use of Romans 13:1-5, a passage in the Bible invoked by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the White House Press Secretary at the time, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, to justify the separation and detainment of families seeking asylum at the US-Mexico border. What does this Bible passage really mean - in a historical and contemporary context - if Sessions and Sanders are correct? Jaye outlines the danger of using religious passages to justify oppressive government actions. This episode also includes fresh new commentary that frames this episode in the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic and Black Lives Matter protests.
