The beloved German producer talks about finding inner peace, overstimulation and his new album on Pampa Records. Mental health is a topic that comes up frequently in the music industry, but it's still not discussed enough among electronic music's top performers. In this RA Exchange, Stefan Kozalla—better known as DJ Koze—opens up about his battle with anxiety, self-doubt and rising expectations that come with being a long-standing, high-profile name. He talks about overstimulation, music as rest and the compromises artists need to make to have relevance and staying power. Kozalla, a beloved and eccentric German artist who has developed a cult following over the course of his career, has productions on esteemed labels like XL, Kompakt, Cocoon, Warp, Ninja Tune and BPitch, which garner praise as soon as they're released. "Every time DJ Koze comes out of the woodwork to drop a 12-inch—or even just a remix—we usually end up hearing it everywhere for months on end," wrote former RA editor Andrew Ryce. Kozalla talks to RA contributor (and former editor) Matt Unicomb about his production process and early influences—an uncanny combination of Basic Channel and Public Enemy—as well as his forthcoming album, Music Can Hear Us, coming out on Pampa Records on April 4th. On the show this time, it’s the propulsive poise and complexity of Nilüfer Yanya. Nilüfer Yanya is a British singer-songwriter, from an artistic family with Turkish and Barbadian heritage. She writes pensive songs, centered around her breathy contralto and her original guitar style. You could sit and think about the equivocal lyrics, or you could get off your ass and dance. Her latest is “My Method Actor” - as in she is her own, method actor - sort of learning to be herself by inhabiting herself fully. For this performance she played 5 songs from the album, which is available on Ninja Tune. Here’s Nilüfer Yanya - Live on KEXP. "I do activism as much as I can." The Peruvian DJ and producer talks about the human rights issues close to her heart, fighting for human rights and the incredible story behind her LP for Ninja Tune. Sofia Kourtesis is a Peruvian DJ and producer based in Berlin known for her buoyant, upbeat music that channels and transmutes sociopolitical activism and personal hardship. While she's put out a number of solo works, her EP Fresia Magdalena and her debut LP, Madres—both of which came out on Ninja Tune—have been received with exceptional critical acclaim and put her on the map as a headlining touring artist. Both speak to some of the discrimination Sofia has felt as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community in South America, as well as how she's confronted difficult topics like family caregiving, illness and death. In this RA Exchange recorded live at C2C Festival in Turin, she opened up about her mother's recent battle with cancer and the neurosurgeon who provided life-saving surgery (as a thank you, Kourtesis took him and his surgery team out to one of her shows in Berlin). She also discusses her commitment to human rights at length. For Kourtesis, music is a form of activism and healing; she uses it to talk about her Latin American community and the movements that are happening, to show the diverse range of demonstrations for equality, for the queer community and for abortion rights. In a touching final moment of our talk, she opens up about the homophobia that ultimately caused her to leave her school in Lima and then to depart from Peru to Europe altogether. She's been based in Germany since she was 17. Listen to the episode in full.

In 2020, our guest this week was named an Artist in Residence at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). Thus we are finally able to continue the theme established on episode 84 with Matthew Dear, a line of enquiry which I know many of you were keen to see more fully interrogated on the podcast.Daedelus has been making music since the 90s, releasing albums (on labels including Brainfeeder and Ninja Tune) almost every year this century, and performing with such virtuosity that they are now a professor of electronic music performance at Berklee's Electronic Production and Design Department. So we had much to discuss during this conversation, including the nature of extra terrestrial communication, government efforts to support the creativity, intellectual property and sampling, the making of albums, and the views and expectations of the new generation of musicians. This is a good one...If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! We've been having a look back through the Tape Notes archive to bring back some of our favourite early episodes that you may have missed. This selection is our conversation from November 2019, with Sam Shepard, Floating Points. EPISODE NOTES In this episode John heads to EMS4 studios in Shoreditch to chat with Floating Points a.k.a Sam Shepherd, about how he recorded and produced his latest release, Crush. Talking from deep within Sam's musical laboratory, we peer behind the curtain and find out how Floating Points music is created and crafted, pulling apart some of the tracks from his second album along the way. We get to hear how live performance and classical music are a serious influence in his writing process in addition to experimenting with the impressive number of synths he's collected over the years. Geekery is in abundance in this episode. Listen to find out why space was scant in Sam's student bedroom, who sick Anna actually is and why sometimes all you need is a Yamaha Reface CS in your backpack. Tracks discussed: Last Bloom, Annasickmodualr, Bias. TAPE IT Thanks to our friends at Tape It for supporting the podcast. What do you call a music scene with no name? The lack of a commonly-accepted moniker for the mid-to-late 90s movement centred around Ninja Tune and Gilles Peterson amongst others is a real anomaly in contemporary music. One of the most interesting insights from our guest this week, Mr Scruff, is the revelation not even the DJs themselves referred to it as anything in particular. That's pretty crazy! This is a great conversation, a classic episode even. We discuss Manchester, sampling, tape editing, record collecting, as well as the AI stuff and the general making of ones way in the music scene. You're gonna love this one...!If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! Imagine you've made it. You and your friends have hit the big time in music and you're going to be a star. But then, quite suddenly, it's over. Your best friends don't want you anymore, and you're on the outside. Perhaps they're tired of your bad habits, they think you're not good enough, or they sense you just don't want it as much as they do. Whatever the cause, you're a reject. So, what do you do next?Featuring a player rejected by both Nirvana and Soundgarden who became a decorated special forces soldier, Britpoppers who spiralled into addiction before becoming novelists and missionaries, the terrifying story of Guns N' Roses' first drummer, super-rejecting band leaders, self-destroying rappers, troubled hard rock bassists and girl-band burnouts, The Rejects takes an intimate, thoughtful look at people who've been kicked out of bands, what they experienced and what came afterwards.Coming from a writer with twenty years' music industry experience, The Rejects is a sympathetic study of some of music's most fascinating characters, and what happens when the dream comes crashing to an end. The result is a compelling alternative history of popular music.Jamie Collinson has worked in the music business for over twenty years, primarily for two iconic independent record labels; Ninja Tune and Domino. Having worked with Arctic Monkeys, My Bloody Valentine, Franz Ferdinand, Wiley, Wet Leg and Roots Manuva, he's lived in London and Los Angeles, where he founded Ninja Tune's US HQ. He's been backstage at some of the world's most famous venues and festivals in the company of the artists he's worked with, navigated colourful characters, A & R'd albums and directed marketing campaigns to sell them. Along the way, he's seen success and failure, heartbreak, joy, addiction, violence, terrifying egoism and stunning generosity. Throughout it all he's done a lot of writing, including journalism for the Guardian, Spectator, Evening Standard and many music magazines. He published a novel, The Edge, with Oneworld Publications in 2020.Buy the book from Wellington Square Bookshop - https://www.wellingtonsquarebooks.com/book/9781408717967

This month's episode welcomes British producer Leon @Vynehall. After a start DJing around the UK, Leon's focus shifted to production as he released his debut EP Music for the Uninvited, and a widely acclaimed first album on Ninja Tune called Nothing in Still. Inspired by his grandparents emigration from the UK to New York, Nothing is Still also included a novella and a set of short films, an entire world crafted from the seed of the music. His second and much loved album Rare Forever, however, focused inwards, as Leon explored his own identity, capability, and ambition; although it lacks a traditional narrative, Leon himself became the protagonist. With Rare Forever as a jumping off point, Leon and I explore his journey in self-acceptance, his growth as an artist, and how to thrive from failure as well as success. ++ Music: "Duofade" - Leon Vynehall (2024) "Ecce! Delighted and honoured to be joined by Jonathan Moore on the podcast today. Jonathan is one-half of hugely influential electronic act, Coldcut, which he formed back in 1986 with Matt Black. Coldcut are often refereed to as pioneers of pop sampling in the 1980s We discuss, among other things, the recording of Coldcut's first album. His memories of working with the late and very great, Mark. E. Smith from post-punk band The Fall and Jonathan tells a great story about the time Coldcut remixed a track by legendary French composer and pioneer of musique concrète, Pierre Henry. We also discuss Ninja Tune, the label that he and Matt started in 1990. The label's first release was the first five volumes of DJ Food's Jazz Brakes. Since then Ninja Tune has gone on to release albums by The Cinematic Orchestra, Bonobo, Kelis, Amon Tobin, Black Country New Road and the amazing BICEP https://coldcut.net/ https://ninjatune.net/home The Fall w/Coldcut - Telephone Thing Coldcut featuring Lisa Stansfield Synthetic Dreams is presented and produced by Scott Zverblis Synthetic Dreams on Instagram Synthetic Dreams title music by Chris Ibbott

So she's now driven to change that – and she explains to Joe Sparrow how she initiated Merlin's Engage mentorship program, designed to boost the representation of women in the top ranks of the music industry. Marie is U.S. Managing Director at Ninja Tune, and is also Managing Board Director for Merlin, the digital rights music licensing partner organisation for independent rightsholders. We talk about her own career, how Merlin's mentorship program works, the importance of finding strong allyship and support, what changes she is already seeing – and what you can do to be part of the change. It's a new year and that means a new season of TNT! This year we're still digging into full-length albums - but we're also uncovering the record labels that provide the world with these releases and the rare gems that we look forward to uncovering. On our first show of Season 5 (!) Thanh + Tim talk about the 2017 Luaka Bop release, "Reflections: Mojave Desert" by British electronic music producer, DJ, and musician Floating Points.
A special downtempo DJ mix this week with recent and classic tunes that have influenced 25 years of Tru Thoughts. New music from Tara Lily feat Theo Croker. Mark Pritchard's amazing unreleased remix of Massive Attack. Deep instrumental beats from Photek and Lisa Carbon Trio. Harp & Bass from Brandee Younger & Dezron Douglas. Quality music from 4hero feat Carina Andersson. Tru Thoughts classics from Bonobo and Quantic. Epic sounds from Andre 3000. Beats with door creaks from DJ Vadim on Ninja Tune. Plus plenty more music treats.
Regarding the brevity of the intro... which actually wasn't that brief because I was able to use some audio I'd already recorded to pad it out. The bout of sciatica that I was suffering from last week has got significantly worse and I'm typing this while lying on the floor, where I have been for the majority of the last three days. So that's not great - it may affect the podcast schedule next week but let's hope not. Apologies in advance if it does. And now, on with the show...--Would you get “tech house” tattooed on your butt?Me either, and in fairness I don't think our guest this week actually has, despite the title of one of the tracks on her 2020 EP ‘Pleasant Stay But I Won't Come Back'.Machine Woman has emerged as a really great producer with releases on Ninja Tune's Technicolour, Delsin, as well as her own label Take Away Jazz Records. And she is also a character with an interesting story. We discuss the challenges of moving to a new country as a teenager, navigating through musical gender stereotypes, the scene in different cities, and much else besides. This was a fun conversation with one of the more irreverent characters of the dance scene, and you're gonna enjoy it!If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! "You're the master of your own vision." In this collaboration with Rhythm Section, Ninja Tune's head of physical retail gives a masterclass on the inner workings of a record label. Alex Ives has been at Ninja Tune for ten years as the head of physical retail. He also runs Big Dada, a sub-label run exclusively by minorities and people of colour. In this masterclass recorded live in London, Ives unpacks the various departments and teams that make up the Ninja Tune enterprise, from manufacturing, sync and publishing, to product management and A&R. He also suggests a few routes for young people to get a foot in the door of the label world. It's often not a matter of trying to score a hard-earned internship at a major, he reflects. Often, it's easier to launch a career by starting a label yourself and adding it to your CV. "Going DIY can build a massive amount of love and interest that can lead you to a major label," he tells host Emily Jones. "Sometimes that's the best way." Working as the head of physical distribution doesn't come without its challenges in a world facing climate change, and Ives fields questions about pressing vinyl as a carbon-negative company, re-thinking record packaging, working to change consumer habits around ordering and returning records, and navigating a booming streaming economy. To hear more of his insights, listen to the episode in full. This conversation was recorded live in London, and you can watch video shorts from the talk on YouTube. "It's through collaboration that I've grown most with my sound." In this collaboration with Rhythm Section, the multi-instrumentalist talks about how he found his style and started his career. Jordan Rakei is a self-made musician. A multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and producer whose work dips into soul, hip-hop and electronic music, he moved to London from New Zealand, giving himself a four-month "buffer budget" to get his career off the ground. Now, he's released on Ninja Tune and Rhythm Section International, and has collaborated with a number of Grammy- and Oscar-award-nominated artists. But his journey wasn't easy, as he explains in this masterclass moderated by Roy Mills and Rhythm Section's Bradley Zero. Rakei talks about how to build a career as an independent artist, why he transitioned from working alone to working with a big agency, signing deals with labels, and living close to the edge in an expensive city. It's the first in a three-part series called Future Proof hosted by Rhythm Section International, all of which explore facets of creating and sustaining a career as a musician. This episode was recorded live in May, and you can watch video shorts from the talk on YouTube. Listen to their conversation in full. Episode 7: Ash MulimbaAsh Mulimba, aka Mulimba, is a London-based music artist and singer-songwriter signed in publishing to Ninja Tune records. He has toured all over Europe and opened for the likes of Tom Walker and Friendly Fires. We sat down in Ant's kitchen to have this conversation and although Caitlin had never met Ash before, it has turned out to be one of her favourite episodes. Ash was so honest and thoughtful with his answers. This episode does contain heavy topical content, so if that's a bit much for you, then check out one of the other episodes.Disclaimer: This podcast episode was recorded using an iPhone, so unfortunately the audio quality is not as high fidelity as other episodes. But don't let that put you off listening, as the stories and answers are deep, interesting and expressive.Have You Got Your Sh*t Together? with Caitlin O'Ryan, is a podcast that celebrates not having your sh*t together! In each episode, Caitlin interviews guests who seemingly “have their sh*t together” - be that in life/love/work/hobbies. Throughout the conversation, the questions unveil whether they actually do, or whether the whole concept is a lie! With a mix of guests from various backgrounds, the podcast is sure to be relatable, honest, and an antidote to Instagram culture. "Singing is super vulnerable, but it's such a big release." The DJ and producer opens up about her new album and how she brings deeply personal issues to bear. Jayda G's father, William Richard Guy, died shortly before she turned ten. In the months leading up to his death, with the help of Jayda G's older sister, he recorded 11 hours of video tapes documenting his story for his youngest daughter. Guy, the Canadian DJ and producer's latest album on Ninja Tune, is built around snippets of his recordings, with each track inspired by either a particular chapter of his story or something she's learned about herself as she unpacked her grief. "This album is about him and for me," she wrote on Instagram. "I needed this. It gave me perspective, understanding and depth to myself and my outlook on life and family." For this episode of the RA Exchange, Jayda G spoke with Berlin-based artist Juba about making the album and the history that inspired it. She also opened up about integrating her own voice into her songs, a process that made her feel vulnerable, but also provided an enormous sense of release. While she doesn't have plans to sing the album live anytime soon, she revealed her other upcoming projects—including a feature-length documentary about her work in environmentalism—and how she balances her busy touring schedule with her parallel interest in science, her marriage and, most critically, her much-needed downtime. Listen to the episode in full.
Nabihah Iqbal - Dreamer from the 2023 album DREAMER on Ninja Tune. In late April, Nabihah Iqbal dropped her long-awaited sophomore record Dreamer via Ninja Tune. Five years after the release of her debut, Weighing of the Heart, and six since Iqbal's last EP under her former moniker Throwing Shade, the record is a resplendent re-introduction to the London-born artist, curator, broadcaster and lecturer. Blending elements of early ‘80s electronica, shoegaze, and trance with ruminative lyricism, it's a record that hits the heart as much as it does the body. The story behind the record starts in agony, as many great records do, with Iqbal's studio being burglarized in early 2020 and all her work lost, including what was supposed to be her sophomore record. Piling onto the trauma, her grandfather suffered a brain hemorrage leading Iqbal to fly to Pakistan shortly before the pandemic hit and stranding her there as the world shut down. But as all creatives know, what doesn't kill you, gives you better material for your work. It was there that the first seeds of Dreamer appeared, with just an acoustic guitar and a harmonium. Our Song of the Day is the album's title track “Dreamer.” One of less trancey songs on the album, the song is a combination of Best Coast breeziness and Cocteau Twinsian dreaminess. The lyricism is pure unadulterated bliss, “Dream of me /And I'II dream of you,” Iqbal coos. “Sun so soft /And sky so blue /This love is happy love.” The song comes with a video shot in 700-year old palace in Old Lahore, Pakistan and directed by Zayan Agha, who said this of the video, “Taking a documentarian's approach to directing the music video, I gave Nabihah the freedom to discover the vibrant chaos of Lahore. I filmed her navigating through the city's mundane cacophony, resulting in a surreal and dreamy visual experience that vividly portrays the city's essence.” Watch the video and read the full post at KEXP.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Rahill - "I Smile for E" from the 2023 album Flowers At Your Feet on Big Dada. With today's Song of the Day, Iranian-American artist Rahill shares a sneak peek at her forthcoming debut album, Flowers At Your Feet, out May 12th via Ninja Tune imprint Big Dada. The track is a tribute to her late Aunt Elaheh. As Rahill writes on Instagram, "The rock of my fathers family. A beloved mother, daughter, sister, and wife. I wrote this song to celebrate and honor her, because the love shared and connection I still feel to her outshine the devastation of her departure from the physical realm. She's still with me. May this song be a gentle reminder to anyone walking with that pain and grief." PVA - "Untethered" from the 2022 album BLUSH on Ninja Tune. South London trio PVA have gained a reputation for their live sets, with their dark, industrial-tinged dance music and frontwoman Ella Harris' deadpan vocals. (Early in their career, the band came up with the term “country-friend techno” to describe their sound.) With their debut LP BLUSH, the group channels the raw energy of their shows, while displaying an increased confidence in the studio. “We wanted to surprise people and do something more than just get across how we sound at a gig,” percussionist Louis Satchell conveyed in a press release. “It's quite an anxious record sometimes that is relating to mental health issues but also an everyday anxiety of making the album. It's been a rocky ride but we always pick ourselves up.” Harris says today's Song of the Day is about "being in a straight relationship that is restrictive and closed off. It's basically an expression of this really frustrated anger at masculinity and a resentment at being unable to free yourself from that heteronormative situation and explore the world.” The group elaborates, "'Untethered' is a song about release. It's our current set opener and an introduction to our industrial arm. We wrote it in one session in a burst of chaotic catharsis. The lyrics follow a character being freed from imaginary tethers and experiencing the earth under their feet again." Young Fathers - “Geronimo,” a 2022 single on Ninja Tune. Scottish genre-benders, Mercury Prize-winners, and KEXP favorites Young Fathers released their third record Cocoa Sugar in what feels like a lifetime ago, 2018. At long last, they finally returned with the single “Geronimo.” In a world where we're still stretching our legs and feeling out how to get back into the swing of “real life,” the trio - made up of Alloysious Massaquoi, Kayus Bankole and ‘G' Hastings - are doing the same. In their most soulful, downtempo song to date, Young Fathers are both sonically and literally dipping their toes back into the waters of music. While in the past, they'd often caustically throw themselves at you, pushing the doors down with the heels of their feet, the trio is gentle in their approach, as if to tap on the door and ask, “Do you mind if I enter?” Of course we don't mind. But, personally, I'm not opposed to a gentle approach these days. This is what the band had to say about the song: “A good time trying. That's what Ma said, she was smiling, but it was meant as a warning. It's a track about contrast, because life is contrast - pushing through, giving up, all at the same time. Wanting everything and then wanting nothing, then wanting everything again. It's kind of reflective of where we are at the moment, trying to remember how to do this again. Trying to make music and all of the other stuff that comes along with it. Trying to forget all the bad bits, just trying to get somewhere. And that's where we are right now, trying to get somewhere. It's the tenderness in toil, we had expelled a bunch of stuff with a lot of drive and wilder energy beforehand but this one had focus. It widened the scope again for us personally, that's where the real high comes from. We grew another arm. We surprised ourselves. So coming back with a track called ‘Geronimo' feels quite fitting. Just the 3 of us again, but still in a fucking basement.” Read the full post and watch their 2018 KEXP in-studio at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
