I sat down with Nathan Fake, one of the UK's most distinctive electronic music producers, to chart his journey from rural Norfolk to the forefront of techno, IDM and experimental electronic music — and to unpack Evaporator, his seventh studio album. The record marks a clear pivot away from drum-heavy habits toward mood, melody and atmosphere, growing out of an intentional “ambient-only” brief. We dig into the nuts and bolts of music production: why Nathan still sketches ideas in old versions of Cubase, how cassette saturation, cheap gear and sonic imperfections add human friction, and where modern plugins genuinely earn their place. He talks about contrast as a compositional tool — lush pads against tough drums — and traces a lineage from Border Community's trance-tinged techno through to echoes of Warp-era electronic atmospherics. There's also a candid look at playing legacy tracks live, reshaping classics like “The Sky Was Pink” and “Outhouse” through improvisation, memory and feel, rather than carbon-copy recreations.Beyond sound design, the conversation opens out into bigger questions about electronic music today. Do long-form tracks still survive in a scroll- and swipe-first ecosystem? Nathan answers by doubling down, placing a nine-minute centrepiece at the heart of the new album. We reflect on working with small independent labels versus larger music organisations, and he shares pragmatic advice for staying singular: ignore trends, set your own constraints, and let the idea dictate the tool. We also probe the monoculture of online tutorials and ubiquitous DAWs.If you enjoy Lost and Sound and want to help keep it thriving, the best way to support the podcast is simple: subscribe, leave a rating, and write a quick review on your favourite podcast platform. Three years ago I interviewed my friend and occasional ACL contributor Gabe Bogart for Episode 29, our anniversary episode. We had such a good time we talked about doing a podcast called SLEPT ON IT, and so I sat on this episode for years, waiting for us to get off our asses and make it happen. No one ever asked why episode 30 was missing, so it feels right for an episode with this title to turn up years later. We discuss adventurous listening, the dangers of nostalgia, the hip hop renaissance of the 2020s, and much more. Ep. 176: In 2026, labels, artists, musicians and creators are all working differently: generating millions of micro-royalties every month across global campaigns that involve multiple of partners across dozens of countries. Getting your music out there is easier than ever, but processing that increased volume of payouts becomes more complex – and we all have an expectation to get paid fast, and see what's going on and what we're owed at any given time. So to find out what's happening at the point where all those payment pipes meet, in this latest episode of Music Ally Focus, we partnered with a fintech company that processes tens of billions of payments each year – Tipalti, which works closely with labels like Ninja Tune to pay their artists what they're owed. We chatted to Tipalti's Travis Hughson about what labels need in 2026, what artists want when it comes to payments, and how to maintain trust and transparency to keep all parties happy. Some more Tipalti resources for the music business:Automated Royalty Payouts to Nurture ArtistsNinja Tune Enhances Artist Satisfaction and Cuts Payouts Processing Time by 50% With Tipalti Mass PaymentsFast, Secure Global Payments AnywhereRoyalty Rate Explained: How to Determine Your Royalties========This is a Music Ally Co-Labs podcast: musically.com/music-ally-co-labs. On today's episode, I talk to musician Julianna Barwick. Originally from Louisiana, Julianna ended up in New York in the early aughts and self-released her debut EP, Sanguine, in 2006. Her first album The Magic Place came out on Asthmatic Kitty in 2011, and since then, she has released a dozen more albums, EPs and collaborations on labels like Dead Oceans and Ninja Tune. Her latest, Tragic Magic, a collaboration with harpist Mary Lattimore, just came out in the middle of January on InFiné, and it is just wonderful! Just as everyone else is winding down for the seasonal break, Lost and Sound returns after my project sabbatical with one of UK club culture's most vital voices: I. JORDAN.We trace a line from Doncaster fairgrounds and bassline bus journeys to festival stages — and to the 2024 debut album I Am Jordan, which places community, class, and queer belonging at the centre of contemporary dance music. It's a fast-moving conversation about sound, craft, and care. We talk about why tempo is a feeling rather than a rule, how working at 132–136 BPM can sharpen intent, and what happens when a seven-minute club tool becomes a three-minute vocal track that completely shifts how your body responds. We get into the granular details too: the feedback loop between club and studio, testing dubs on big systems, and the patient editing that turns a drop into a collective release on the dancefloor.Class and culture cut through everything. We discuss reclaiming the much-maligned donk on Ninja Tune as a deliberate act — honouring northern working-class roots while shaping a scene that gives trans artists agency, visibility, and joy. We also talk about why some crowds are easier to guide than others, what truly separates underground from mainstream energy, and how health, sobriety, and touring habits are central to building a sustainable life in music.I.JORDAN on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/i.jordan/?hl=enI.
Singer-songwriter Jono McCleery shares his journey from falling asleep to his jazz pianist stepfather's music to becoming an acclaimed artist bridging folk, jazz, and electronic dance music. Raised with music after regaining his hearing around age five, Jono taught himself guitar at seventeen and began writing deeply personal songs influenced by John Martyn and Nick Drake. He discusses his collaborative approach with producers like Five One and his philosophy of working within limitations—preferring standard guitar tuning to explore endless creative possibilities. Jono reveals his process of recording improvisations first, letting melodies dictate lyrics, and protecting creative space from social media noise. With no plan B beyond music, he maintains an "endless fire" of creativity while navigating label expectations, album production challenges, and the evolution from acoustic folk to electronic collaborations that expand his audience across genres.Key TakeawaysFinding freedom within limitations creates deeper creativity than constantly changing instruments or approachesRecording improvisations unconsciously allows themes and melodies to emerge naturally before structuring lyricsCollaboration works best with people who already understand your music and bring unexpected creative surprisesProtecting creative space from social media noise and external pressures is essential for authentic artistic expressionHaving no plan B strengthens commitment and resilience when pursuing creative careers through difficult periodsWorking across genres through collaboration bridges different musical worlds while maintaining artistic integrity and personal voiceValidation comes from individual connections with listeners rather than streaming numbers or social media metricsDiscipline develops through working with analog limitations before digital technology makes everything instantly accessible and overwhelmingLive music needs more alternative spaces including family-friendly environments to strengthen human connection beyond screensFinishing albums requires setting firm deadlines and accepting that creative work evolves through compromise without losing core integrity Daring Creativity. Send us a textIn this episode, Neil sits down with Kevin Foakes (aka Strictly Kev and DJ Food) - legendary DJ, graphic artist, and archivist of UK counterculture - for a deep dive into four decades of music, raves, graffiti, and psychedelic experimentation.Kevin's journey is a masterclass in underground creativity, spanning from Adam and the Ants fandom to hip-hop graffiti, from acid house squats to Ninja Tune's golden era. After discovering hip-hop through the legendary Subway Art book, he traces his path into graffiti culture, documenting pieces in Westbourne Park and Ladbroke Grove, and recalls the pivotal Freestyle '85 hip-hop jam.The conversation shifts to the rave and acid house years, where Kevin recounts his experiences raving at squats, founding the influential Telepathic Fish chill-out parties, and crossing paths with scene legends like Mixmaster Morris and Coldcut's Matt Black. He reflects on his design work for Ninja Tune, co-hosting the iconic Solid Steel radio show, and the label's legendary Stealth nights at Hoxton's Blue Note.Along the way, Kevin shares vivid anecdotes about Megatripolis' psychedelic chaos, the record shop culture of Ambient Soho, and his current projects—including a Telepathic Fish compilation released in September 2024 and his forthcoming book on psychedelic light shows.Support the showhttps://www.youtube.com/@ControlledWeirdnesshttps://open.spotify.com/artist/20nC7cQni8ZrvRC2REZjOIhttps://www.instagram.com/controlledweirdness/https://controlledweirdness.bandcamp.com/Theme song is Controlled Weirdness - Drifting in the Streetshttps://open.spotify.com/track/7GJfmYy4RjMyLIg9nffuktHosted from a South London tower block by Neil Keating aka Controlled Weirdness. Tools are for humans (and super-smart animals, apparently), garages are for cars, countertops are for food, and rollaways are for organizing! This esoteric episode is all (mostly) about embracing the perfectionist - just a little - and making your tools and shop space match your intellect and style. Because so many good projects and necessary repairs get hog-tied by bad organization, and a lack of operable tool enhancement can be submarined by a lack of organization, we want you to scratch that itch and embrace the OCD (if just long enough to put the nut drivers in the correct drawer). While we're at it, there's Jerry Reed and "Amos Moses", Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, Ninja Tune and Funkungfusion, Electronic Excursions in Hi-Fi and Meat Beat Manifesto, and more "Kashmir' covers than you can shake a two-headed guitar at.

The beloved German producer talks about finding inner peace, overstimulation and his new album on Pampa Records. Mental health is a topic that comes up frequently in the music industry, but it's still not discussed enough among electronic music's top performers. In this RA Exchange, Stefan Kozalla—better known as DJ Koze—opens up about his battle with anxiety, self-doubt and rising expectations that come with being a long-standing, high-profile name. He talks about overstimulation, music as rest and the compromises artists need to make to have relevance and staying power. Kozalla, a beloved and eccentric German artist who has developed a cult following over the course of his career, has productions on esteemed labels like XL, Kompakt, Cocoon, Warp, Ninja Tune and BPitch, which garner praise as soon as they're released. "Every time DJ Koze comes out of the woodwork to drop a 12-inch—or even just a remix—we usually end up hearing it everywhere for months on end," wrote former RA editor Andrew Ryce. Kozalla talks to RA contributor (and former editor) Matt Unicomb about his production process and early influences—an uncanny combination of Basic Channel and Public Enemy—as well as his forthcoming album, Music Can Hear Us, coming out on Pampa Records on April 4th. On the show this time, it’s the propulsive poise and complexity of Nilüfer Yanya. Nilüfer Yanya is a British singer-songwriter, from an artistic family with Turkish and Barbadian heritage. She writes pensive songs, centered around her breathy contralto and her original guitar style. You could sit and think about the equivocal lyrics, or you could get off your ass and dance. Her latest is “My Method Actor” - as in she is her own, method actor - sort of learning to be herself by inhabiting herself fully. For this performance she played 5 songs from the album, which is available on Ninja Tune. Here’s Nilüfer Yanya - Live on KEXP. "I do activism as much as I can." The Peruvian DJ and producer talks about the human rights issues close to her heart, fighting for human rights and the incredible story behind her LP for Ninja Tune. Sofia Kourtesis is a Peruvian DJ and producer based in Berlin known for her buoyant, upbeat music that channels and transmutes sociopolitical activism and personal hardship. While she's put out a number of solo works, her EP Fresia Magdalena and her debut LP, Madres—both of which came out on Ninja Tune—have been received with exceptional critical acclaim and put her on the map as a headlining touring artist. Both speak to some of the discrimination Sofia has felt as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community in South America, as well as how she's confronted difficult topics like family caregiving, illness and death. In this RA Exchange recorded live at C2C Festival in Turin, she opened up about her mother's recent battle with cancer and the neurosurgeon who provided life-saving surgery (as a thank you, Kourtesis took him and his surgery team out to one of her shows in Berlin). She also discusses her commitment to human rights at length. For Kourtesis, music is a form of activism and healing; she uses it to talk about her Latin American community and the movements that are happening, to show the diverse range of demonstrations for equality, for the queer community and for abortion rights. In a touching final moment of our talk, she opens up about the homophobia that ultimately caused her to leave her school in Lima and then to depart from Peru to Europe altogether. She's been based in Germany since she was 17. Listen to the episode in full.

In 2020, our guest this week was named an Artist in Residence at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). Thus we are finally able to continue the theme established on episode 84 with Matthew Dear, a line of enquiry which I know many of you were keen to see more fully interrogated on the podcast.Daedelus has been making music since the 90s, releasing albums (on labels including Brainfeeder and Ninja Tune) almost every year this century, and performing with such virtuosity that they are now a professor of electronic music performance at Berklee's Electronic Production and Design Department. So we had much to discuss during this conversation, including the nature of extra terrestrial communication, government efforts to support the creativity, intellectual property and sampling, the making of albums, and the views and expectations of the new generation of musicians. This is a good one...If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! We've been having a look back through the Tape Notes archive to bring back some of our favourite early episodes that you may have missed. This selection is our conversation from November 2019, with Sam Shepard, Floating Points. EPISODE NOTES In this episode John heads to EMS4 studios in Shoreditch to chat with Floating Points a.k.a Sam Shepherd, about how he recorded and produced his latest release, Crush. Talking from deep within Sam's musical laboratory, we peer behind the curtain and find out how Floating Points music is created and crafted, pulling apart some of the tracks from his second album along the way. We get to hear how live performance and classical music are a serious influence in his writing process in addition to experimenting with the impressive number of synths he's collected over the years. Geekery is in abundance in this episode. Listen to find out why space was scant in Sam's student bedroom, who sick Anna actually is and why sometimes all you need is a Yamaha Reface CS in your backpack. What do you call a music scene with no name? The lack of a commonly-accepted moniker for the mid-to-late 90s movement centred around Ninja Tune and Gilles Peterson amongst others is a real anomaly in contemporary music. One of the most interesting insights from our guest this week, Mr Scruff, is the revelation not even the DJs themselves referred to it as anything in particular. That's pretty crazy! This is a great conversation, a classic episode even. We discuss Manchester, sampling, tape editing, record collecting, as well as the AI stuff and the general making of ones way in the music scene. You're gonna love this one...!If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! Imagine you've made it. You and your friends have hit the big time in music and you're going to be a star. But then, quite suddenly, it's over. Your best friends don't want you anymore, and you're on the outside. Perhaps they're tired of your bad habits, they think you're not good enough, or they sense you just don't want it as much as they do. Whatever the cause, you're a reject. So, what do you do next?Featuring a player rejected by both Nirvana and Soundgarden who became a decorated special forces soldier, Britpoppers who spiralled into addiction before becoming novelists and missionaries, the terrifying story of Guns N' Roses' first drummer, super-rejecting band leaders, self-destroying rappers, troubled hard rock bassists and girl-band burnouts, The Rejects takes an intimate, thoughtful look at people who've been kicked out of bands, what they experienced and what came afterwards.Coming from a writer with twenty years' music industry experience, The Rejects is a sympathetic study of some of music's most fascinating characters, and what happens when the dream comes crashing to an end. The result is a compelling alternative history of popular music.Jamie Collinson has worked in the music business for over twenty years, primarily for two iconic independent record labels; Ninja Tune and Domino. Having worked with Arctic Monkeys, My Bloody Valentine, Franz Ferdinand, Wiley, Wet Leg and Roots Manuva, he's lived in London and Los Angeles, where he founded Ninja Tune's US HQ. He's been backstage at some of the world's most famous venues and festivals in the company of the artists he's worked with, navigated colourful characters, A & R'd albums and directed marketing campaigns to sell them. Along the way, he's seen success and failure, heartbreak, joy, addiction, violence, terrifying egoism and stunning generosity. Throughout it all he's done a lot of writing, including journalism for the Guardian, Spectator, Evening Standard and many music magazines. He published a novel, The Edge, with Oneworld Publications in 2020.Buy the book from Wellington Square Bookshop - https://www.wellingtonsquarebooks.com/book/9781408717967

It's a new year and that means a new season of TNT! This year we're still digging into full-length albums - but we're also uncovering the record labels that provide the world with these releases and the rare gems that we look forward to uncovering. On our first show of Season 5 (!) Thanh + Tim talk about the 2017 Luaka Bop release, "Reflections: Mojave Desert" by British electronic music producer, DJ, and musician Floating Points.
Regarding the brevity of the intro... which actually wasn't that brief because I was able to use some audio I'd already recorded to pad it out. The bout of sciatica that I was suffering from last week has got significantly worse and I'm typing this while lying on the floor, where I have been for the majority of the last three days. So that's not great - it may affect the podcast schedule next week but let's hope not. Apologies in advance if it does. And now, on with the show...--Would you get “tech house” tattooed on your butt?Me either, and in fairness I don't think our guest this week actually has, despite the title of one of the tracks on her 2020 EP ‘Pleasant Stay But I Won't Come Back'.Machine Woman has emerged as a really great producer with releases on Ninja Tune's Technicolour, Delsin, as well as her own label Take Away Jazz Records. And she is also a character with an interesting story. We discuss the challenges of moving to a new country as a teenager, navigating through musical gender stereotypes, the scene in different cities, and much else besides. This was a fun conversation with one of the more irreverent characters of the dance scene, and you're gonna enjoy it!If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! Nabihah Iqbal - Dreamer from the 2023 album DREAMER on Ninja Tune. In late April, Nabihah Iqbal dropped her long-awaited sophomore record Dreamer via Ninja Tune. Five years after the release of her debut, Weighing of the Heart, and six since Iqbal's last EP under her former moniker Throwing Shade, the record is a resplendent re-introduction to the London-born artist, curator, broadcaster and lecturer. Blending elements of early ‘80s electronica, shoegaze, and trance with ruminative lyricism, it's a record that hits the heart as much as it does the body. The story behind the record starts in agony, as many great records do, with Iqbal's studio being burglarized in early 2020 and all her work lost, including what was supposed to be her sophomore record. Piling onto the trauma, her grandfather suffered a brain hemorrage leading Iqbal to fly to Pakistan shortly before the pandemic hit and stranding her there as the world shut down. But as all creatives know, what doesn't kill you, gives you better material for your work. It was there that the first seeds of Dreamer appeared, with just an acoustic guitar and a harmonium. Our Song of the Day is the album's title track “Dreamer.” One of less trancey songs on the album, the song is a combination of Best Coast breeziness and Cocteau Twinsian dreaminess. The lyricism is pure unadulterated bliss, “Dream of me /And I'II dream of you,” Iqbal coos. “Sun so soft /And sky so blue /This love is happy love.” The song comes with a video shot in 700-year old palace in Old Lahore, Pakistan and directed by Zayan Agha, who said this of the video, “Taking a documentarian's approach to directing the music video, I gave Nabihah the freedom to discover the vibrant chaos of Lahore. I filmed her navigating through the city's mundane cacophony, resulting in a surreal and dreamy visual experience that vividly portrays the city's essence.” Watch the video and read the full post at KEXP.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Rahill - "I Smile for E" from the 2023 album Flowers At Your Feet on Big Dada. With today's Song of the Day, Iranian-American artist Rahill shares a sneak peek at her forthcoming debut album, Flowers At Your Feet, out May 12th via Ninja Tune imprint Big Dada. The track is a tribute to her late Aunt Elaheh. As Rahill writes on Instagram, "The rock of my fathers family. A beloved mother, daughter, sister, and wife. I wrote this song to celebrate and honor her, because the love shared and connection I still feel to her outshine the devastation of her departure from the physical realm. She's still with me. May this song be a gentle reminder to anyone walking with that pain and grief."
