Twenty-five years is a long time to stay ahead in electronic music, especially considering how quickly genres mutate and scenes evolve and collapse. So I sat down with North Carolina-born beatmaker Travis Stewart, better known as the inimitable Machinedrum, to ask what his secret is.Across records like Room(s), Vapor City and now the new mini-album BL00MS, Stewart has melded influences like jungle, footwork, UK bass, ambient, juke, techno, hip-hop and R&B into his own distinctive sound, and always managed to sound fresh and exciting. Along the way, there have been collaborations with Azealia Banks, A$AP Ferg, Tinashe, Dawn Richard and Hudson Mohawke, plus an insane catalogue of remixes: Solange, Boards Of Canada, The Glitch Mob, Bonobo and Johnny Cash (yes — THE Johnny Cash). We talk about the cities that shaped him, from North Carolina to New York to three formative years in Berlin. We unpack how “gateway” sounds can lead people into deeper listening (and possibly — begrudgingly on both our parts — how brostep may have acted as a catalyst for deeper listening), and how he's kept his work connected to his root influences without getting trapped by any one lane. The second half goes deep on independence and the modern music business. BL00MS is his first self-released project after years with Ninja Tune, and he's thinking hard about direct-to-fan release strategies, touring systems, and treating streaming like marketing rather than a lifeline. We also get into authenticity on social media, how to promote music without turning it into a clown show, and why self-imposed limitations inside Ableton Live can be the difference between endless tweaking and finishing a record. So, it's great to be back. Lost and Sound is now monthly. I started making episodes way back in 2018, and it's gone on a real journey since then. Now totally independent, I rely on listeners like you to help keep the project growing. If you enjoyed the episode, follow Lost and Sound on Substack and me on Instagram, subscribe to the RSS Feed, and share the episode with someone who'd be into it. Independent journalism and independent podcasting still run on word of mouth.BL00MS on Bandcamp.
If you amalgamate the names Kate and Lloyd, plus several genres of music, the end result is Kloyd, one of the UK's most exciting up-and-coming talents making electronic music in the vein of Four Tet, Bonobo, and Sofia Kourtesis. While on tour supporting Art School Girlfriend, she talks to Headliner about her upcoming mixtape, New Love, her London release show and Green Man performances on the horizon, and how she creates her unique, organic sound.
Beyond thrilled to be introducing our next guest, Echo Juliet and this killer mix she cooked up- using her first love of percussion as the defining element of her sound. The DJ and producer swapped her classical music degree for Ableton and decks. A friendly, yet formidable force, her DJ sets journey through deep house, percussion-filled global electronic, and warm sounds which have seen her open for Bradley Zero, Tom VR, Nightmares on Wax, The Orb, Jeremy Sylvester and more. Receiving comparisons to Four Tet and Bonobo, her colourful productions dwell on the fringes of club music, leaning towards the leftfield. From high energy excitement to dreamy textures, she draws influence from broken-beat, deep house and classical percussion. Recently named one of DJ Mag's emerging artists to watch, her releases have also been featured in Bandcamp's Best Electronic list, played in legendary clubs such as Fabric, and supported by DJs including Axel Boman, Seb Wildblood, and BBC 6Music tastemakers Gilles Peterson, Nemone and Tom Ravenscroft. She has also featured on a compilation alongside electronic icons 808 State, and been remixed by Gold Panda. Radio credits have seen her guest hosting on NTS and mixes for Rinse FM and The Face Radio in New York, as well as hosting a radio series for promoter Soundcrash. Meanwhile, DJing has taken her from noted South-London party Rhythm Section and residencies for The Standard and Variations, to SXSW in Austin, We Out Here festival's second stage and playing to over 3,000 people at Dreamland Margate. Committed to creating a more inclusive music scene, she founded Future Proof for Bradley Zero's Rhythm Section label, has taught music production to women and non-binary folks for Saffron and is a director of DJ community Selextorhood.
Watch it on YouTube here. What happens when Burner behavior goes under the microscope? Sociologists, ecologists, and economists have been on this show. Now we're looking at this culture through a new lens: primatology. Isabel Behncke is an evolutionary anthropologist and a Burning Man Project Board Member. From tracking bonobos in the jungle to observing humans on playa, she shares her groundbreaking research on ritual and play. In this mind-expanding conversation, she and Stuart explore:
Wu Zhuoling (吴卓玲) https://soundcloud.com/zhuoling_wu Music Producer | Live Electronic Artist | DJ | Co-founder of Small Projects Records A chameleonic pioneer at the forefront of China's live electronic counterculture, Wu Zhuoling has built a reputation for deeply immersive performances and genre-defying sound. Performing exclusively with hardware, she creates live sets that guide audiences through a fluid sonic journey - from soothing ambient and experimental downtempo to soulful electronica, progressive IDM, and driving leftfield techno. Her music reflects a distinct artistic identity shaped by her cultural roots and over twenty years of production experience. Before turning to electronic music, Zhuoling was a folk singer and fronted a trip-hop band in the 2000s, an influence still felt in her melodic sensibility and lyrical story-telling. In her current electronic work, she weaves intricate sound design and rhythmic precision with organic warmth, crafting sonic landscapes that feel both progressive and deeply human. Zhuoling has performed extensively across China's major clubs, live houses and festivals, as well as at art exhibitions, fashion shows, audiovisual showcases, and open-air venues set against natural landscapes. Her international footprint continues to expand, with tours in New Zealand (2024) and the United States (2025), alongside performances in the Netherlands, Germany, and Japan. Her standing in the Chinese electronic scene is reflected by being invited as support act for the China tours of several renowned international artists such as Max Cooper (2024), Rival Consoles (2026) and Bonobo (2026). Her acclaimed releases - Another Shore (2022, LP), Uncharted (2023, EP), Reverie (2024, LP) and Uncharted II (2026, EP) - mark her evolution as one of China's most distinctive voices in live electronic music. Did you know bonobos have their very own way of talking to each other? In this Wow in the World episode, Mindy is using a new language learning app to try and help her communicate better with her pen-pal. The only issue is, her pen pal is an ape! From playful gestures to powerful vocalizations, bonobos use a language all their own to express feelings, build relationships, and keep their families connected. This jaw-dropping episode dives into the science of how bonobos communicate, why it matters for scientists, and what kids can learn about the importance of empathy, teamwork, and listening. A bonobo named Kanzi was sitting at a table across from a researcher. On the table are two completely empty clear cups and an empty clear jug. The researcher pretends to pour juice into both cups. Then she pretends to dump the juice out of one of them, turning it upside down and shaking it as if to show it's empty. Then she asks Kanzi, “Where's the juice?” There is no juice, but most of the time, Kanzi points to the cup that is supposed to still contain the imaginary juice. The study, published in Science, is the first controlled evidence that a nonhuman ape can represent something mentally that isn't physically there, and keep track of it as events unfold. In the study, three controlled experiments were used to test whether an ape could actually track a pretend object in a consistent, rule-based way. In the first experiment, Kanzi watched the pretend pouring and pretend dumping, and then had to identify which cup still 'had' the invisible juice. Even when the researchers moved the cups around, he usually pointed to the correct one. That suggests he wasn't just memorising a position, he was mentally tracking the imagined contents. But maybe, you might think, he believed there was real juice hidden in there somehow. So the researchers ran a second experiment to rule that out. This time, one cup had real juice in it and the other had pretend juice. When asked what he wanted to drink, Kanzi overwhelmingly chose the real juice, so he clearly understood the difference between imagination and reality. In a third test, they switched from juice to grapes. The researcher pretended to take a grape from an empty container and place it into one of two jars, then pretended to empty one jar. When asked, 'Where's the grape?' Kanzi again pointed to the jar that was supposed to still contain the imaginary grape. This matters because imagination has long been considered one of the defining features of being human. Human children typically start pretend play around age two, and even younger babies show signs they understand make-believe scenarios. But until now, scientists hadn't demonstrated this ability under controlled conditions in other animals. Humans and bonobos share a common ancestor from around six to nine million years ago. If the roots of imagination stretch back that far, then this capacity didn't suddenly appear with us. It may be part of a much older cognitive toolkit. If apes can think about things that aren't present, if they can hold an imagined object in mind and update that representation as events change, then their experience of the world may be far richer than we've assumed. Bonobos may be our closest living relatives, but we still have so much to learn about and from them. In this episode of Talking Apes, we sit down with Ariel Rogers, Executive Director of Friends of Bonobos, and evolutionary anthropologist Dr. Brian Hare to explore the remarkable social world of bonobos and why their survival matters now more than ever. From decades of research at Lola ya Bonobo Sanctuary in the Democratic Republic of Congo to the day-to-day realities of running a frontline conservation organization, this conversation weaves together science, storytelling, and on-the-ground action. Ariel and Brian share insights into bonobo anatomy, behavior, cooperation, and what these peaceful primates can teach us about humanity's own evolutionary story. We also dive into the challenges facing bonobos today, and the hope found in community-led conservation, ethical research, and long-term commitment. Thoughtful, curious, and full of perspective, this episode is a celebration of connection, compassion, and the power of understanding our closest relatives.Watch on YouTube: [youtube link]Listen on our website: https://globio.org/Ariel-BrianLearn more about Friends of Bonobos: https://www.bonobos.orgSend a textSupport the showTalking Apes is an initiative of the nonprofit GLOBIO. Our ability to imagine is part of what makes us who we are—not just as individuals, but also as humans. It turns out, though, that we may not be the only species capable of playing pretend. In a string of experiments, scientists sat down, set the table, and hosted pretend tea parties with a bonobo named Kanzi to see if he'd play along—and he did.Producer Kathleen Davis chats with study author Amalia Bastos about Kanzi, what it means to imagine, and how our definition of “humanness” keeps changing.Guest: Dr. Amalia Bastos is a cognitive scientist at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com. We have another Christmas treat for you today - an interview with the prodigious musical talent that is Anna Lapwood. Anna is the official organist of the Royal Albert Hall in London, a successful recording artiste and a social media star with millions of followers. A multi-instrumentalist, she was the youngest ever person to be appointed Director of Music at a Cambridge college (and we will hear a bit of Pembroke College chapel choir singing in this episode). In this conversation with Gyles, she tells him about her childhood growing up in a close family in which her parents inspired her with their work ethic. She talks about learning 20 instruments as a child and teenager, and finally taking up the organ when she was 15. She talks about the breakthrough moment in which she accompanied the band Bonobo at the Royal Albert Hall - creating a viral video which has been shared millions of times on social media. She talks about the importance of following your own path, her love of therapy, and the place journalling plays in her performance preparation. This episode features the chapel choir of Pembroke College singing 'Away in a Manger' by Lucy Walker and an excerpt of Anna Lapwood's performance of 'This Shining Night' by Christopher Churcher on the organ. It also features Harriet's choir, Voxetera, singing 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas'. Anna's latest album 'Firedove' is available to buy hereThank you to Anna for this fascinating and inspiring interview.
