Kidsafe Victoria and Bella's Footprints Foundation have launched a button battery billboard campaign in Torquay, with a warning about the deadly common household item. The organisations are urging local parents and carers to be button battery aware and check items such as cards and presents they are buying this year, in a bid to reduce the number of serious and life threatening injuries. On the program, we held a panel discussion of the risks that button batteries pose to children with Kidsafe Victoria CEO Melanie Courtney and Allison Rees, bereaved mum of Isabella (Bella) who tragically passed away at 14-months-old after swallowing a button battery. Clarkstown-Sunrise Rotarians Past District Governor Nick Constantino and club President Alex Duenas tell RadioRotary about their visit to Neiva, Colombia, where the Huellas Fundación brings laughter into the lives of terminal ill children in four hospitals. In English, the Huellas Fundación is the Footprints Foundation with Meaning of Life. Teenagers and college students form the basis of the Foundation, dressing as clowns to amuse the children and, with the help of the Neiva Noches Plateñas Rotary and the Make-a-Wish Foundation, find ways to provide the children with last wishes. Constantino and Duenas joined in the entertainment dressed as clowns (Mr. Constantino in costume was given the name “Dr Cute,” which Rotarians in District 7210 will certainly endorse.) Listen to the heartwarming stories of the children and the good works of the participating Rotary clubs.
