Effect on Emotions Mindfulness has helped me notice the half-life of my emotions and reduce them greatly. As soon as you notice emotion, you'll see it's half-life just whoop, shoot down. Something Sam Harris says. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is like the fuel to the function of your whole entire body. So James Nester wrote a great book called Breath: The New Science Of A Lost Art by James Nestor. So check that out if you haven't. But one of the key things for breathing is having a breath that you go to every day and Ocean Breath is my go-to. So Just put your hand in front of your face and you just try to fog it up like you would a glass. And now you do the same thing except with your mouth closed and you notice you get a lot deeper breath. And then maintain that breath five and a half seconds. Inhale five and a half seconds. Exhale Whenever you can. Suggested Resources Book: Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Awakening by Joseph Goldstein Book: The Blue Cliff Record by Thomas Cleary Book: The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time by Stephen Hawking Book: The Illustrated Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking App: Waking Up (App by Sam Harris) Bullying Story Clement Decrop shared a personal experience from high school where witnessing bullying left a lasting impact on him. He regrets not taking action and believes that a deeper meditation and mindfulness practice could have empowered him to intervene. Also, Clement emphasizes the importance of teaching meditation to young people to encourage ego detachment. He explains that many instances of bullying stem from kids forming a strong sense of self, akin to developing an identity over time. Clement draws parallels to the concept of the “illusion of self” and the difficulty of defining oneself precisely. Meditation helps children detach from their egos, which can prevent hurtful words and actions. Clement Decrop advocates teaching mindfulness scientifically to help kids understand and reduce harm they may cause each other. On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Allison Doss to the Friends in Beauty guest chair! Allison started her hair career just 5 years ago, at the age of 42, proving it is never too late and you're never too old to pivot and try something new and be great at it! Because of her grit, determination and passion, she was chosen to be a Global Educator for her favorite lightening product Blonde Solutions. She has also been nominated and received Blonding awards internationally. It's incredibly hard to believe that from the age of 17 until 41 years old, she suffered from alcoholism and drug addiction that resulted in homelessness and a complete loss of integrity, self worth and direction. And although she has been a shining star on her new path of sobriety and professionalism, it didn't mean that the world would bow down to her expectations. After her husband revealed his acceptance of his gender identity struggle, the long road of heartbreak, acceptance and surrender for Allison began. She writes about the chaos and healing in her soon-to-be published book THE UNBOSSING. Allison is embarking upon a new journey as a Global Transformational Speaker to share with others how rock bottom can be the solid foundation where you build a new life! Aristotle once said, "The more you know, the more you realize you don't know." Ben Brown (@benbrownhair) had this epiphany when a student asked him why he was doing a technique in a certain way, and he realized he didn't actually know. So the left-handed hairdresser made it his mission to master his craft by becoming the ultimate student. He began filming his work to learn from his mistakes, and later decided to post them to his Instagram page, which now boasts more than 300k followers. In this episode, Ben reveals how perfecting his craft and showing up authentically as himself led to opportunities he could never have imagined, including being a guest on the Hb Teach In stage and imparting his knowledge with students the world over both in person and online.
One of the best aspects of being a pro in the hair industry is the friendships you make along the way. In fact, this idea of community and shared experiences is at the heart of what Hairbrained is all about. And one of the first Hb community members, DJ Muldoon (@danieljosephmuldoon)—a craft hairdresser, global educator and founder of @knowledgedestroysfear—has been a friend of Hb co-founder Gerard Scarpaci since the beginnings of their careers. In this unplugged conversation, they reminisce about the early days working together and discuss the current state of education and the future of our craft.

Today my guest is Lottie Dowling, a global educator specialising in languages, culture, digital technologies and teacher professional learning. Much of Lottie's work revolves around global citizenship, that is, how school students are increasingly interconnected with others across the world. This episode offers insights into some of Lottie's collaborative approaches and practices as she works with teachers to incorporate and strengthen various domains in their teaching practice: knowledge (that is, learning about the world), appreciating global perspectives and culture, and intercultural dialogue. Once these programs and initiatives are running, students might then take some sort of local action, with the aim of global impact. Lottie outlines some of the keys to success, including adequate resourcing, planning school curricula, and involving and engaging the community. We explore some of the more practical approaches that teachers might use in their local context, such as performing a school audit - of the library, or school garden - even the classroom wall and various aspects that extend beyond the classroom. Underpinned with diversity, equity, justice and inclusion, global citizenship can ideally involve all school staff - as well as parents and community - sharing their culture and supporting teachers to plan and implement local learning initiatives. Lottie emphasises the value of collaboration, co-creation and lifelong learning in a rapidly changing world. The Anniversary Episode (Part 6) features Futurist Graeme Codrington and Global Educator and Customer Centricity Expert, Pepe González as they join my studio guests Keith Douglas and Dr Katie Best. In this final guest segment we chat about how leaders need to anticipate, develop scenarios and prepare for an ever changing environment. How adaptive leadership is essential in order to mitigate constant change and how we must become 'customer obsessed' as a strategic imperative. With more data than ever before now available to us it can feel like 'drinking from the fire hose' so we must be able to move from noise to signal and balance with our human centred leadership capabilities with the need for a digital future.

Dr. Demartini talks of a time that he almost didn't live through, a story that brought him to a pivotal moment in his life when he was found in a tent. They together discuss how important it is to remember no one is worth putting on a pedestal. The presence of our own greatness is a powerful motion and something they continue to open up about. *Segment 2* Sam asks Dr. Demartini about the moment he decided his purpose was to help people. He tells another story of when he was asked by multiple people in a short span if he could help them with their meditation and studying. This was at a time when he was learning to overcome his own perception, and led him to realize the more he taught others the more he himself was able to learn. He read hundreds of textbooks on self-discipline. This was how he built a solid foundation of knowledge and grew his discipline. Speed reading, meditation, running and patterns throughout his day helped him achieve his most conscious awareness. *Segment 3* Sam asks Dr. Demartini to dive more into “The Breakthrough Experience.” Along with explaining his books, he tells a story about a woman he met on the beach when he was 14 years old. A story of friendship, love and motherhood is unraveled, leaving Dr. Demartini with many meaningful connections discovered and ironic coincidences. *Segment 4* “How is what we are doing right now affecting who we want to be as a person?” asks Dr. Demartini. Our perceptions are more powerful than reality. We are encouraged to ask ourselves what is the most meaningful action i can take with the resources i have and opportunities available? What will help the most people? All questions we should ask ourselves in everyday life. If you are on a relentless pursuit you will get what you desire. The dreams you have can all be achieved through perseverance. Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-conscious-consultant-hour8505/donations

Bianca talks about leading schools in the Middle East; and her Creole culture in which cousins intermarried to remain fair complexioned and preserve their culture, her grandmother deciding to passe blanc (pass for white), being adamant about not being African, and being shunned by her family because she had less European features than her siblings and associated with blacks; and her family's Creole social status and wealth attained in the Cane River, Louisiana community by former slave Marie Therese Coincoin who owned land and slaves resulting from a plaçage relationship with Frenchman Claude Thomas Pierre Metoyer. She shares stories about growing up in Bedford Heights and Cleveland, Ohio; not knowing that she was black; not being in the same social class as her peers due to parents’ divorce; earning a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education/French and master’s in Instructional Technology from the University of Akron; her interest in developing the minds of students to explore other cultures; her independent study in France; earning a master’s in education law to protect rights of special needs students; working in Saudi Arabia as a resource teacher for students with special needs, relating to classism in their society, and not being seen as an American; working as a principal in Kuwait; frustration with U.S. schools not being equipped to address the social and emotional needs of disadvantaged students; serving as the principal of an Indian American school in New Mexico; her mother not identifying as black but instead American and her father's family preferring that he would have married a white woman; always knowing her grandmother, Lucy Couty, as white in contrast to her Negro certificate; family sending her grandmother to a Negro school apart from her siblings, who had European features, because of her more black features; family pressure on her grandmother to marry white but her instead having relationships with black men; defining Creole as the food, the Catholic church, and consanguinity; the Creole Native American, African, German, Spanish, French, and Jewish peoples creating a mixed-race group of people who lived peacefully within their isolated community while under French and Spanish rule; the Creole class hierarchy dictating that whites sit behind them in church; dating dark skinned black men in defiance of her family’s directive to not marry a black; Claude Thomas Pierre Metoyer’s Revolutionary War service; her family's history not being the traditional negative narrative of slavery; joining the DAR to preserve her grandmother's legacy after she had been rejected by both blacks and whites; embracing her African, European and American Indian heritage; "I am American before I am anything but even before I am American I am Christian"; feeling the DAR is a beautiful organization; “being American isn't about race but where you were born"; the necessity to identify with other black DAR members. When you are self-aware, even when things are not going the way that you want, [it's important] that you don't get too hung up and you are not having emotional ups and downs. One day I was in the cafeteria. I was eating my lunch that my mom had made for me. This kid came over and grabbed my hair and yanked my head back. He yelled at me, “why are you looking at me like this”. I wasn't looking at him. He said, “you wanna fight?” I was a skinny little guy of 110 pounds and I didn't want to fight. So he had his friends with him and he dragged me by the hair, out of the cafeteria, all the way out to the playground area. This happened in front of a lot of people because it was lunchtime. Then he beat the crap out of me. He had me on the ground and was kicking me. Then he yelled, “don't you look at me again.” Then he made some racist comments and walked away. I was crying and there were bruises and blood. I was so afraid. I went home to my mom and she asked me why I got into fights. I didn't even want to explain. I was getting beat up for no reason. I didn't know the language and I had no friends. There was a lot of resentment and a lot of anger. It was a very difficult time.
