Executive Life Coach for CEOs, Investors, Pro Athletes; Author, Podcast Host I discovered Sean through a few mutual friends; I got to learn more about his work through his wonderful book that I started one evening, and I could barely put it down. It's called **Masterpiece in Progress: A Daily Guide to a Life Well Crafted — it's choke full of ideas, mental models, advice. It consists of 365 daily motivational passages. In one of them, Sean writes that life is full of teachers if you know where to look. I couldn't agree more. I feel like everyone has a story, and everyone can teach us something if we only care to ask, and listen. Soon after we recorded this episode, Sean released another book — **Insights of the Ages: Quotes for a Life Well Crafted — which is also a delightful read. There is a lot of wisdom distilled in the quotes. He further opened my eyes to a number of big, powerful ideas in our long conversation. Since our recording, Sean became a instant friend that I value highly. I often listen to his podcast, where he interviews countless fascinating authors, experts, and opinion makers whom we both admire and respect. His interview style is very focused, attentive, and deliberate. I picked up an inspiration or two from his podcasting approach. His conversation Derek Sivers is one of my favorite. For over a decade, Sean DeLaney has masterfully navigated the territories of peak performance, innovative entrepreneurship, and impactful personal development. Transitioning from a career as a professional athlete, Sean now shines as a top-tier executive life coach and the driving force of the What Got You There Podcast. Through his coaching, Sean has fostered the growth and success of a myriad of CEOs, executives, and athletes. http://masterpieceinprogressbook.com/ http://whatgotyouthere.com/ Today, we talk about Sean's book Masterpiece in Progress. He shares how life can be seen as a vast empty canvas filled with possibility and opportunity. He reminds us how every day is a chance to experiment, learn, and adjust. We have a lively discussion about authenticity inspired by William Green, the author of Richer, Wiser, Happier, who's been a guest on the podcast, who we both know and admire. Sean talks about the importance of curiosity, which is an area of study of our mutual friend - Tom Morgan, the curiosity sherpa to billionaires, and also an earlier guest on Talking Billions. I enjoy hearing Sean's thoughts about idea catching, a topic I wrote about recently on my Substack. As an investor, I practice both patience and decisiveness, an approach that my guest has some thoughts about as well. I consider myself a very calm, and collected person. Sean tells me how calm is contagious, and it isn't just a state of mind. Stay tuned until the end, when my dear friend reveals the secret to addressing one of the biggest challenges of them all — the upper limit problem, the invisible ceiling we set for ourselves. How do we grow past that? I'm curious to know, aren't you? https://bogumilbaranowski.substack.com/ Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/bogumil_nyc NEVER INVESTMENT ADVICE. I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guests will bring Bold, Executable, Intrinsic and Targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started.Welcome back to the Be It Till You See It interview recap where my co host in life, Brad and I are going to dig into the unfiltered convo I have with Kate Hutson in our last episode. If you haven't yet listened to the interview, feel free to pause this now. Go back and listen to that one. And then come back and join us or listen to this one, and then listen to that one and see if you like the takeaways we had.Brad Crowell Yeah, (Lesley: Yeah) you can pick. You choose.Lesley Logan You have a choice. Um, so we are super like ... the freaking calendar is going way too fast for me personally. But we are like, just a couple weeks away from our seventh Agency Mini, which is our seven day coaching program.Brad Crowell Pretty amazing.Lesley Logan I know. And like, I miss it. It's been a long, it's been a long time.Brad Crowell Yeah, I mean, you know, we only do it twice a year. So it's, we try to make it roughly six months apart. Sometimes it's, you know, a little off ...Lesley Logan It's like a four month and then a nine month.Brad Crowell Yeah, this one this one was a longer time than usual. So, yeah.Lesley Logan Yeah, well, because we, you know, we used to do it in the summer time. And the reality is, it's like, it's not the best time for most people. SoBrad Crowell Yeah, everybody's traveling and on vacation.Lesley Logan We have a ... ( Brad: hanging at the beach) we do an early year and then a fall. And that's (Lesley: Yeah) how it goes. And this is a se... our seven day coaching program, which if you've never coached with us, or you've been thinking about coaching with us that this is the way to get specifically clarity on not just how to coach with us, but also on your business.Brad Crowell Yeah, (Lesley: Yeah) we're very well, we love helping people build a foundation that they might have skipped, you know, most people will start using social media without realizing what they're using social media for, or, you know, they just, they're getting out there. And they're taking messy action, which we love, messy action.Lesley Logan Sometimes they're not even taking messy action, they're like, "I'm gonna get a logo, and I'm gonna get my colors, and I'm gonna get my font and my branding done." (Brad: Sure.) And the reality is, is if you don't know who you who you're actually for on this planet, and you haven't spent the time and you're just trying to shout to the rooftops to everybody, "Come do my class. Come take my class. My class is amazing." You're talking to no one. (Brad: Yeah.) And so really getting clarity on that and building that foundation. And ...Brad Crowell How do you connect with people? Who are you for? What problem do you solve? All these kinds of things, this kind of clarity. That's everything we're gonna go through. How do you share your story?Lesley Logan Yeah. And also, by the way, we'll answer every single question you have about business that we (Brad: Yeah) can. I mean, we really do try to answer them all even if it's like, hey, this is literally requires at least a two hour coaching call. But I love you. But we really try to be honest with you, because we've done it all. So even if you think you have clarity, I still suggest joining the program because a) it never hurts to go back and look and make sure you didn't miss a step. And b) there's tons of time to get questions and answers on everything else. Also, this time, we are doing something new. We've been letting people jump into the group early.Brad Crowell Yeah. So this is unusual ahead of time, you can jump into our private Facebook group and start getting acquainted and getting yourself prepared.Lesley Logan Yeah, we're giving like little weekly homework assignments to y'all. And so you can actually sign up now at profitablepilates.com/mini. And then you can get invited into the private group early to start working on some homework so that when we kick off, you're really your foundations are really in the ground. And then we will have that seven days together. We ... it's it's amazing. It's so much fun. It really has helped so many people with their business, whether or not you coach with us afterwards, I have had incredible testimonials (Brad: Yeah) and feedback of things people have done just by being in that seven day group. (Brad: Yeah) And then of course, we hope that you join us inside of Agency where we just love on you all the time. All the time. All the time.Brad Crowell All the time. Well, next it's time for some drama. (Lesley: What is the drama?) Well, we have this epic audience question that can be dramatic. So ... (Lesley: I know.) All right, so we're just gonna jump right into it. Have you Lesley ever had to fire a client?Lesley Logan Yes, I got this. I got this question from somebody and, and without naming names, because I don't want to out her on this. She gave me a ton of like, things that went on with the person and I'm gonna tell you right. If you have the urge, if you have this, like, gut feeling, you've got a fire client, you don't actually need to justify it. I'm just a, I'm really really honest. Like, I think and this kind of goes into what we're talking about Kate Hutson, I think especially as women were like, "Oh, I have to have a reason." They have to have been the most off, like there has to be a ...Brad Crowell I didn't write them up three times. (Lesley: Yeah) I'm not following core pretty ...Lesley Logan Well actually, they're going to this thing and like, (Brad: Sure.) I you know ... We make all these excuses for them. No, that that stops now. (Brad: Yeah.) For whatever reason, you have this feeling that this client is not right for you whether or not they're being an asshole. Or they are just like saying things that are inappropriate. If you are having this feeling, you must fire this client. No ...Brad Crowell I mean it could, it could even be like an energy exchange, you know. (Lesley: Yeah. I mean ...) If you're, if your client is always coming in, you know frenetic or hysterical or like, super, super high strung and that is messing with you, you know, then it might be, time to help her find somebody else to work with.Lesley Logan So as instructors, whatever your modality is, there's a scope of practice. Now, if you are an actual therapist, then your scope of practice is to do therapy. But if, if you're not one of those in your scope, therapy is not a thing. And someone actually is requiring therapy, it is important for you to say, "Hey, hi. Here's what I can help you with. (Brad: Yeah) But what you need right now is this. (Brad: Yeah) And so here are a list of people that I trust who can help you or they will help give you referrals of someone else. (Brad: Yeah) But I actually can only do this for you. And this is what I'm saying you need." And if the person is not willing to stay within your scope, and they're like getting frustrated it, you can refund them on the rest of their package guessing oh, that's money, but give it back. Here you go. I have had to fire a client, and it cost me $1,400. And two very difficult conversations. And to be honest, I knew I was gonna have to fire her the moment she bought a package. It was a bad day, and I needed some money. And I was like, I took it, I knew and I was like, "This is not the right client for me." I knew it in the moment. But I had an assistant we had like, I've hired another person. And I was like, well, "I should just say yes to this." And she, every single day of her standing appointment would text me that day to to move herself, to move herself on that day, every single time. She'd had these standing appointments, and I had to take her aside after session seven, and say "look, here's the deal". You don't get to standing appointments, if you're gonna move them around. (Brad: Right) So if you would like to schedule them randomly, you can but you have to use my booking system, and it only shows you within what's happening within 24 hours, you cannot do same day. So you need to know that. Oh no no, I'm gonna keep my times, my times were really good for me, I'm gonna keep my times. Okay, now our two-three packages later, she's still practicing this whole little shindig, I am ignoring her text messages. And every I just ignored them. I did not even engage whether she showed up or not. I charged her. That's how the tools work. You should use our scheduling tool if you don't have one. And (Brad: Yes) then she started to be abusive to the client that came after her (Brad: Right) because she was being a little snarky. And like, oh, must be nice. And I was like, okay, that now you're crossing a line because now not only are you abusing me, now you're abusing someone else. That's not okay. So she sent me this nasty email about something oh, and she came in, I taught her session at the end. I said, "Here's the deal, you have this many sessions left, here's a check for um. I am not the right teacher for you. And I know that's hard to hear. I know you really like coming here. I know that you've made leaps and bounds. But the reality is you need someone who has a more flexible schedule than I. And you need someone who specializes in the situations that you're going through. (Brad: Yeah) And so when you're ready, I'm happy to refer you to some people. In the meantime, here's your money back." She was horrifying. It was an awful conversation I'd have with her. She couldn't have been more mean. (Brad: Yeah.) And then she sent me another really mean email. And I ignored, I didn't respond. There's nothing to respond to in those situations. By the way, if you feel free to defend yourself, then you feel like just defend yourself. But I stood on like my foundation, "This person was violating my rules. And I'm not going to defend myself. I don't need to." So then a couple months later, she reaches out she wants to come back to Pilates. She's been working on her schedule. (Brad: As if nothing happened.) As if nothing like literally she acted like nothing happened. I was like, "I am ... No."Brad Crowell Like, "Am I taking crazy pills or ..."Lesley Logan What is going on? So I refer her to someone else. I said, "Here are some referrals." And then I talked to my referrals. And I said, "Just want you to know, she can be a really good person when she wants to. Here are the things that she does that you need to be aware of." (Brad: Yeah) And let me just tell you, she and her new teacher were two peas in a fucking pod. They had the best time. They did a great job. And last I heard that she never missed a session. So just so you know, if you have a client that's like driving you frickin bananas. They could make someone else a nice coffee cake. And so I would just would say like, don't put up with things if you have put boundaries in place and you've enforced them... what you don't like my analogy?Brad Crowell When was the last time you had a coffee cake?Lesley Logan Okay ... (Brad laughs) I miss it. Is it edelmans, endimans? (Brad: Entenmanns) Entenmanns? You know, the coffee cake they make at the store ...Brad Crowell Yeah. (Lesley: Oh) That's pretty darn good.Lesley Logan That's so good.Brad Crowell Entenmanns? Enten...Lesley Logan I think, it's entenmanns. Endilman is our friend ... (Lesley and Brad laughs) But ... I can see the light, the writing and all that coffee cake. But anyways, going back to this, you don't actually have to justify firing a client. And yes, you probably made mistakes along the way in upholding your boundaries. It's okay. After this podcast, you will not do that anymore. And if you join Agency Mini or Agency you will not do that anymore.Brad Crowell Yeah, boundaries, you know.Lesley Logan We train people how to treat us, we really do. (Brad: Yeah.) So here's what you do. Take a deep breath. They are not my sessions, they have left. And then say, "Thank you so much for letting me teach you this entire time. I am no longer available to teach you. And I know that's hard and I know change is hard. So I don't want to assume that you want to find a new teacher right away. But when you do, please reach out. And I will I will happily introduce you to someone or here on this post it note that I've got right here is all the information so you can take it up on your own when you're ready. (Brad: Yeah.) I thank you so much." And then whatever it is ...Brad Crowell Notice that she didn't even tell her why. I'm not the right teacher for you. Here's your money back.Lesley Logan There, they are not going to convince crazy. That ...Brad Crowell There's no chance that like, if you know, you, you, you can say you keep you signed my client agreement, and you keep breaking my client agreement.Lesley Logan You can't say it ... (Brad: That is super sad.) It's actually what is going on, you could totally do that. And, and that's also really nice. The thing is, it's like firing someone in a job. They're not listening, (Brad: No) and they're never had. Just think back to the last time you were dumped. Did you agree with the person dumping you like, let's just be real? Did you actually agree with like any of the things they said? No. So there's your client who's crazy is never gonna go, "You know what, you're right. I've been lying about all my illnesses." They're never gonna say that.Brad Crowell You know what I did? I got I got completely blackout drunk last night. And I just skipped my class with you this morning and totally blew you off and then asked you, you know not to charge me for it. Yeah.Lesley Logan So besides not charging you for I have had clients just text me I got completely blackout drunk last night. And please charge me for that. And they are still my clients because (Brad: Yeah but that's true.) they follow the boundaries. (Brad: They did.) They follow the rules. But I'm just saying like, when you have someone that you're like, "This person is actually like, just really affecting my ability to run, teach my other clients and run my business." You must let them go. You don't have to make excuses for it. You don't even have to tell them why. And if they ask, you can say, "We've discussed this in prior conversations. I'm happy to send you screenshots of those of the boundaries I've had and how you violated them." You can say that, but ...Brad Crowell They will not take you up on that. (Lesley: They're not ...) They will be like, "Yeah, you text me, you send me every single tag."Lesley Logan I'm going to tell you right now, no one's gonna say thanks for firing. I promise you. So there's no reason to do that. Just ...Brad Crowell You don't even need to, you just keep it simple. Hey, you know (Lesley: Keep it simple ...) I'm not the right teacher for you. (Lesley: Here's the money.) Here's the refund.Lesley Logan And like for if you're worried like the retaliation, well, that's what cops are for. So first of all, if they retaliate you via email, or text, message, screenshot all of it, save it, do not respond, send it to the police. (Brad: Yeah) If they are going to write a bad review, let me just tell you right now.Brad Crowell You also have the opportunity to reply to said bad review. And that's like that can be just as powerful any other way where you get to, now you get to justify, (Lesley: Yeah) once you get to do it publicly in front of everyone, and you get to say, "You signed my client agreement, and yet you are consistently late over a six month period, and you never did this thing and you never did that thing and you rip my stuff, whatever."Lesley Logan And you know what? That will make you feel really fucking good. You'll feel really good about that. And that's what I'll say about that. But I know it's scary. This is why a client agreements are a real thing. If you don't have one, use our scheduling tool. We give you one. These are contracts that you actually wear. This is how you allow ...Brad Crowell Client waiver and the studio agreement. (Lesley: Yeah) Studio agreement is like this what you're agreed ...Lesley Logan You agree to reschedule in this appropriate time. You agreed to pay on this time, all these very important things. My loves, you are the only person who can do what you do the way that you do it. (Brad: Yeah) I cannot have you burn out because someone did not follow your boundaries. You didn't enforce them and you're like, "Well, they could say something bad about me out there. So, I guess I'll just keep putting up with it." If your friend was telling you about a boyfriend, just treating them like crap, would you go, "Oh, well, you know what they could say things to other guys that can make you not dateable so you should just stay with him." Never, you would never do that. You would never do that. But you do that in your business all the time. Okay, I'm off myself.Brad Crowell All right. All right. All right. Now let's talk ... I mean, that was that was pretty dramatic. I mean, (Lesley: You you labeled it.) I did. I did. I totally did.Lesley Logan I didn't think it was gonna be dramatic, but then we went there.Brad Crowell Okay, now let's talk about Kate Hudson, Hutson Hutson. Everyone has to have their eat, pray, love moment. And for an Executive Life Coach and Owner of Shattered Glass Coaching. Kate Hutson's moment came on the beach in a jungle, sitting in the sand, she decided it was time, it was time for a woman to learn how to show up with confidence. It was time for women to learn how to show up with confidence and embody the mindset needed to lead in their professions. And Kate has now made it her life's mission to help her clients overcome fear and create the life that they really wanted. In fact, I think she also was talking about sitting on a surfboard. (Lesley: I'm pretty sure, sitting on a surfboard.) Yeah. But she she was a workin in a job, not excited about it and was did a retreat. And in the retreat, she was having a conversation with one of the other retreaters and the other retreater was like, "You should be coaching people."Lesley Logan Yeah. You know what I think? I think anytime you're super bored at your job. And you're like, "Why me?" I think you should go, "Oh, my God, I'm about to have my moment." (Brad: I'm about to have my moment.) I'm about to have ... If I'm bored in a job. That means I've been set up for something amazing. It's time to go to the beach. Just saying. I'm just saying like, I really think that like people like, "Woah is me." And it's like, actually, this is going to be the rock bottom you need to do your movie, your whole thing.Brad Crowell Yeah. (Lesley: So...) And if you need a forum, in order for you to have that discovery, join us in Cambodia.Lesley Logan Yeah, that's a jungle.Brad Crowell It is a jungle. There's there's not a beach in that one. But there's a lake.Lesley Logan There's a lake, it's beautiful. (Brad: Yes) Anyways, okay, I really love that she said, "Don't confuse free time with availability." Boom. Like, just take a moment right there. Free time and being available. There is times during the day that I am available that I definitely don't want to be called, chat with anyone, do anything, it is not in my free time. I'm like, "Oh what do I want to do?" Not be available for you. That's what it is. And so I really love that she actually verbalize that because I wonder listeners, hi. How often have you confused your free time with being available? (Brad: Sure.) Like people who are like, "I want to read a book." But they're always going out with friends. Well, you probably had time to read that book. You could like, I'm not saying like ditch your friends, but I'm just asking, I'm just saying like, look at how much time you're giving away as free time. That doesn't need to be available time.Brad Crowell Yeah, I think I think it's, um, we're talking about boundaries already. And this is one of those things, you know, there is whether your free time is in the morning and you're meditating or taking a walk, and it's just you being you know, with you, or it's in the evening. And you know, you specifically don't have plans that night. It doesn't you know, you have free time is valuable. It's a it's an opportunity for your mind to recharge your body, to recharge for you to maybe get into something something fun, a new hobby like she's talking about, or even just reading a book like she's like Lesley was talking about, sorry, but it doesn't, you know, there that time has value. And if you lump it in with this is, I you know, someone calls and says, "Hey, did you want to go out?" You know, it's going to change that time dramatically. Sure, you're going to get a chance to hang with friends or do or any of that kind of thing, but you're not getting that recharge time.Lesley Logan Yeah. Well, I mean, like, I remember back in LA when people are like, "Okay, when you guys are available for dinner?" And we would see that Friday night is available. But that would saying yes to that would mean that we were having dinner on Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday night. (Brad: Sure.) So yes, it's available but it's not free. (Brad: Yeah.) And and you have to just be really clear on like, if you were if you are an extrovert who's like fuck yeah, booked me all the time with people. That's fine, like know yourself, right? But just also make sure that when you say yes to things, that you are actually being conscious that it is going to take you away from other things which I think I'm leaving it to you.Brad Crowell Yeah, yeah. Because I really loved she said saying no, actually means you're saying yes to something else, or vice versa. And this and it's funny because it took me a second to realize what she did there, I'm just gonna say it again, saying no means you're saying yes to something else. Okay. So you're not necessarily like, yes, you're telling your friend, "No, I'm not coming out." Okay. And you can you can dwell on that. You can be upset at yourself or, or whatever. But there's a, you can also reframe that decision. And you can say, "Hey, I would love to go out with you. But I have already said yes to something else." And that's something else is going to bed on time, or having a quiet night or reading the book, like we were just talking about. Right. So you know, and it's the same ...Lesley Logan And just to put in there, you don't have to ever justify a 'no' or a 'yes', just like, going back to our little question. (Brad: Yeah) You don't ever have to justify anything you say.Brad Crowell Right. You don't have to explain to them. You just made the decision. And that is the decision, that's what you're doing. Right. So if you if you are on a roll, and you know that you feel good when you get eight hours asleep, and you're like, consistently going to bed at nine o'clock. And someone says, "Hey, do you want to go see a comedy show at eight?" You can say, "I'm sorry. I've already said yes to something at nine." (Lesley: Yeah.) And they'll be like, "You did?" And you're like, "Yeah. My fucking pillow." You know, like, you don't have to explain that.Lesley Logan Oh, you know what? Let's just go back to before we're dating. You called me one night. (Brad: Yes, I did.) And you called me and you wanted to hang out. And I was like, "No. Call me earlier. (Brad: Yeah) I'm sleep already."Brad Crowell I did... I used to stay super late at the office. Like I would leave at 7 or 8pm. Yeah, you know and she was like, "Don't come by." I was like, "What the ... Okay, I won't."Lesley Logan Yeah, you can call me earlier. (Brad: Yeah.) And he never called me that late ever again. He called earlier (Brad: That's true.) after that.Brad Crowell That was boundaries.Lesley Logan Yeah. So but I just anyways, I think it's really important. Sometimes we think if we say no to something, that we're gonna disappoint people. Here's the deal, you probably will. But if they hold that against you, here's your sign. That's not the right person to be around. (Brad: Right.) You're, all of my most amazing relationships are not offended when I go off the face of the earth to them. They know it's not personal. (Brad: Yeah.) If you are a person in my life, and you take it personally that I took a week and I didn't text or call you, we are not friends. Because I don't have people who need me to coddle them in my life. I don't do that. That's not how it works with me. (Brad: Yeah.) And it might sound really cold. But I promise you, when I had those people in my life, I was an asshole. I was stressed out, (Brad: Yeah.) crying, frustrated, lost. I am so more I'm able to be present with people. I'm able to love and be generous with my time and my love for them because they don't expect me to say yes to everything. So I ...Brad Crowell Yeah, I mean, like, you know, I just had my 40th birthday party (Lesley: Yes, you did.) and one of my closest friends ...Lesley Logan Looking good at 40, 40's never looked this good. Brad Crowell One of my closest friends wasn't able to be there for the for the actual hang. You know, and another one of my closest friends wasn't able to be at our wedding. You know, and it doesn't change the fact that they're still some of my closest friends. You know, so ...Lesley Logan You know, I just want to say this because I listened to Iliza Shlesinger - Ask Iliza Anything. Everyone is fucking amazing. And Iliza will be a guest in this show. I'm putting that out there. Guys, don't ever have a problem with this. This is only this is sorry, ladies. Like most guys do not take offense. Like it's a bummer. (Brad: Yeah, I was bumed. But it's okay.) But it wasn't you were like, "Oh my God, I can't believe. He wasn't at my wedding." But women, ladies, we need to get it together. It is not personal if someone can't make your thing. (Brad: Right.) And if it is person who is doing that to be personal, have the but like the galls have some balls to actually say, "I'm not coming to your wedding because I don't like the person you're married period." Like and like whatever it is to say the thing. I just think that like, we're like walking around like, "Oh my God, I don't want to offend anyone. I'm gonna do this. One of the things. I'm tired of it." And you are people in your life should understand that no means no. And it's not personal and that you are when you say no to something going back to Kate, because she's amazing. You are allowing yourself to say yes to something else. (Brad: Yeah.) And you may not know what that something else is, or you may be very frickin clear. But I get offered to do things all the time. And it's like, I could say yes to those things. But it will mean saying no to something else that could come up. And so I'm really like I have a little like roadmap. I have some things I think about. I give myself some time on my... "Hey, can I get back to you on that? When do you need to know by so that I can actually weigh it all out and make sure ..." One, I'm not saying yes because (Brad: Yeah, think about it. Sure.) Yeah. Because I don't want to say yes. Because words of affirmation love language, hello. Like, it's really flattering to be invited to things. And I also want to make sure that when I say yes, I'm not going to be able, it's, I'm not I'm not going to bail, because I don't do that. Like if I say yes to something. I'm there. (Brad: Yeah.) So I really try to make sure that I don't say yes to things and then go, "Hey, you know what, I know I said it at dinner at your house tonight. And it's five o'clock, and you've been making dinner all day, I'm sure. And I'm not coming." Like I don't do that. So I'm, so if you're struggling to say no to things, find out when you people need to know things by that should just be a go to when do you know my answer by so that you can then start to practice saying yes or no.Brad Crowell Right. Yeah. And it's a great way that's actually really solid advice because ... (Lesley: Thank you.) And ... You're so welcome. In the moment, you're going to feel that pressure, right? But if you are giving yourself a buffer, "Hey, thanks so much for the invitation. Like when do you need to know by. I want to check my calendar and just make sure everything makes sense." Now now you have a time to like process that. Lesley Logan Okay, let's talk about some BE IT action items. What bold, executable, intrinsic or targeted action can we take away from your convoBrad Crowell From your convo (Brad: From my convo.) with Kate Hutson?Lesley Logan I know. I was I stole Brad line.Brad Crowell She did. But it's okay.Lesley Logan It's fine. I love Kate Hutson. If I haven't said already. She is really fun, concise, like she is was really good at like bringing she had so many great little gems in there. And ...Brad Crowell Yeah. And it was very unfiltered.Lesley Logan Yeah. Going back to our thing. I hope you all know we changed the word every week. Anyways, she had one.Brad Crowell Yes, she gave us one solid action item.Lesley Logan So she said for the rest of the year, try something new each month that you've never tried before. Holding ... what are you doing this month that you've never done before?Brad Crowell That is a great question.Lesley Logan I am going to look up this class that our friend Victoria.Brad Crowell Can I, what do you need to know that by I'm going to check my calendar and get back to you?Lesley Logan Well, we're recording this early. So you know, that's a great ...Brad Crowell I was just joking about answering your question.Lesley Logan Great. So, you know, we actually already did something this month we've never done before. So we're good there. (Brad: We did.) Yeah, we went to Chippendales. (Brad: Oh, yeah, we did that.) That was so fun. (Brad: It was pretty insane.) Shoutout to LA, what a great job. (Brad: Yeah.) So, but why we, why both Brad and I love this. And now the thing that I'm going to do for this month, I've never tried before, I'm gonna put in September, gonna buy myself sometime. Because our friend Victoria is like, there's a class at Millennium where you just lay on your back and do like leg stuff. And I was like, "She's so amazing."Brad Crowell It's a dance class (Lesley: It's a dance class.) where you laying your back.Lesley Logan Yes. But I've never I never did, I don't like to take dance classes because I can't dance. But I was like, "Oh, I can do that. That I could do." I'd be amazing. I might have a new like talent. I might be on a show with this talent. We don't even know yet. I have to go take the class first. But I'll do that first September. But why we love this is because you and I did The Artist's Way. (Brad: Yeah.) And you have to do something different every week. You take yourself on an artist's date every week. (Brad: Yeah, every week.) And it was annoying, and also extremely exciting.Brad Crowell It was fun. Actually, it took it took a couple of weeks to get in the groove.Lesley Logan Yeah. The first weeks, is it just felt like pressure.Brad Crowell Yeah, I was like, "I gotta make time for this in my schedule." But then it became it became something to look forward to.Lesley Logan Like a game. (Brad: Yeah) And it's kind of like, "Oh, what am I going to do for this that I've never done before?" And so why I love this is I think it is I know for me, I love routine. I love routine so much. I'm like, I'm doing this thing currently, I'm supposed to look for green cars, and I haven't even left the house. So I just keep looking at the only green car across the street like, "Oh, look green car. Look green car." Because like I suppose it's it's a thing from a book I'm doing. (Brad: That's really funny.) Anyway. (Brad: I think ...) I love my routine so much. I won't leave the house. Like I'll just stay here. I could just stay here for days. I could just stay at the house for days and only leave to walk the dogs and (Brad: It's true.) I'd be like, yes. So I love this because it's like, "Oh, if I'd have to do something new each month I'm gonna have to leave the house."Brad Crowell Well, I think I think I decided what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna go fishing. (Lesley: Oh, okay.) I think I did that once before when I was like 12.Lesley Logan Are you gonna go with my dad? (Brad: Yeah) Great. You know what I want to do? I want to take our paddle board out maybe I'll do that on Sunday by myself. Um, you'll have the van. (Brad: I will.) Okay, well, I will do that when you get back but I, I just ...Paddle boarding is fun.We have a paddle board and it's fun. And also we ...Brad Crowell Make sure you paddle board at Lake Mead and well ...Lesley Logan I'm gonna find a body. Yes. Oh my gosh. Have y'all heard how many bodies their finding out for now? (Brad: I think it's four. Yeah.) Yeah. By the way, there's a lot of people who are pouring water into that on that lake. I swear, like come on the mafia has to be like, "Get the water in the lake. Get the water in the lake." Anyways, I just think can you all please do me a humungous favor? Tag this episode. (Brad: Yeah.) And tell us what you're gonna do this month you've never tried before? (Brad: Yeah.) And if you remember next month, do it again. (Brad: Do it again.) Because this is a great way if you're like hobby hunting, or you're unsure what your next step is, I promise you when you do something different you've never done before. First of all, it's really weird. It's really like scary nervous, like anxious and build this stuff up. And then you do it. And then you have like this data going back to John Mollura's episode, this data that you can do new things, and it breeds confidence.Brad Crowell Yeah, that's ...Lesley Logan All right. It's Hutson, right? You say it like Hutson?Kate Hutson Hutson, H u t s o n. Yeah.Lesley Logan Hey, Be It babe, how are you? Okay, full disclosure, I have tried to do this intro like 17 times, I don't know, I don't know why it's take... normally I'm a one take wonder. And it's a big joke. If I can't, if I don't do in one take, it does take 17 takes. And I share that with you because it's not, it's not about being perfect though 17 the other 16 takes we're actually not imperfect or bad. A couple times the water turned on, another time I dropped something, I sneeze on someone. And three of them, I didn't even hit record. So it's okay to be imperfect. In fact, it's better. It's way more fun. And some of the things I hear from you the most is how authentic I am and that's what you like about it. And I share that not to be as like a braggy braggy person, but to give you permission, because I know myself. And I, I remember before I could handle being imperfect, I would let other people make mistakes, but I wouldn't let me make a mistake. It wasn't okay for me to make a mistake, but it's okay for everyone else to make a mistake. And so, if that's you, if you are giving full permission for imperfection to other people, but you are holding yourself to some sort of standard that is unachievable. Hi, there is another way. And you can be it till you see it. You can literally laugh about the mistake you made just like laugh about it just like (Lesley laughs) laugh about it, you can give yourself permission to try again, it's called try. Don't know why Yoda said there's only do there's no try. There's so many tries, and I don't I know my Star Wars, people are gonna get mad at me. But I please explain to me how he means something different because you can try. And you start again, you can start again, you can start again, you can start again, unless you're a brain surgeon working on someone's brain, you can start again. And maybe even they have like some sort of way of figuring that out. So, I love you. Thank you for being you. Thank you for your amazing feedback. Thank you for giving me permission to be authentic. And I hope that this gives you permission to be authentic. And I can't think of a better guest for this intro to go for this weird trial and error intro to go with. But then our guests hey, Kate Hudson, because this woman is a life coach and executive career coach for women. She is helping women be themselves through their bold versions of themselves to help them see and have the life and career they want to have with joy. And I really I'm excited for you to hear her words because not only are there so many gems, like get your notebook out, okay. But also some great takes on some things that you probably have been doing in your life and wondering if why you do them and if they're working. I'm talking like some really awesome stuff towards things that like we all do. And we've all been told to do and we kind of like us it's working. And she's also super authentic. She also is figuring herself out. She's also been it till she sees it. I can't wait for you to hear what she's doing because oh my gosh, the stuff that came from that. Anyway, she's my new friend. (Lesley laughs) I hope to hang out with her I gotta figure out where she's in California. So when I'm in there and California can meet her in real life. But if she resonates with you, do me a humongous favor and hers to. Share this with a friend, texted to a friend, screenshot this, tag us both. It's not only does it help other people get inspired and hear her words and get this podcast out but actually, it helps you remember and solidify what you just learned for this podcast. When you tell someone, "Oh my gosh, I learned X Y and Z from this podcast." You actually just ingrain it to yourself. If you want to learn something better teach it to somebody. That's how it goes. So let's get to Kate because ... you got to hear these words, you got to hear these words. And here she is.Yeah. So Hutson, okay, perfect. All right, Be It babe. I am really excited because I found this guest. And I was like, "This girl is a being in it till she sees it," like I am sure she did. And in fact, she has so many Be It moments, so a ways that she acted as if before, like to get to where she is right now. And I can't wait to have her share her stories, but also how she did it. Because I know so many of you are like, "Yes, I can do it, but maybe not." And then you kind of fall back at the wayside. So Kate Hutson is here. I'm so excited. Can you tell everyone who you are and what you're up to these days?Kate Hutson Yeah, thanks so much for having me, Lesley. I'm Kate Hutson. I'm a Executive Life Coach and Owner of Shattered Glass Coaching. So in my coaching business, I work with professional women. And it's kind of where life coaching meets career coaching. So about (Lesley: Cool) half the women I work with are corporate, the other half are business owners. And we're working on showing up with confidence, taking control of your career, and really like stepping into that most powerful version of you, so that your life and your job can be joyful, fulfilling, energetic, and you can really make it what you want it to be.Lesley Logan Okay, that's amazing. I have so many questions there. But before we go into the things that I'm really eager about, I would love ... Was that something you like went to school for? Like, how did you just like, were you like, always, you're gonna be a coach. How does, do you know what I mean? Like there's this like point where you're like learning to be a coach, and then your a coach. I know as a Pilates teache, I was like, "When am I a Pilates teacher?" So what was the journey, because you don't start off with like a handful of executive women just like pounding on your door going, "Hey, help me balance all these things."Kate Hutson Absolutely. So I've always been in like a leadership, teacher coach kind of position even since I was in middle school. And I was doing like assistant coaching for soccer. So I've always had this part of me that loves teaching, and helping other people and being that encourager, supporter coach. I was actually a teacher for two years straight out of college, I did teach for America, right out of college in rural Louisiana. So that education teacher piece has always been there. And then I joined to the corporate world in my 20s. And it took me so I was there for seven years. And I enjoyed my position. But I was seeing myself and so many of the women that I worked with, go through the same struggles and the same challenges. And I love being in that leadership position where I could help mentor and guide other women and kind of figure it out together. Then I started speaking at conferences across the country about some of the leadership and training that I was doing with the women that I worked with. And when I started speaking about it and teaching other people and educating and coaching, I was like, "This is where my heart is. This is where my passion is, I have to get out of the company that I'm at." And I've got to start doing this full time, this coaching, speaking, educating piece. And I didn't know what that looks like. I considered like going into HR for a little while, which looking back that that wasn't it.Lesley Logan The moment you said that my face is like,"ew." No no no, No offense, HR people listening, but like, it doesn't like it doesn't work for you. It's not what you just described.Kate Hutson I know, I know, and so I was like, I don't know what I want to do. But I know I want to do more of the mentorship, the coaching, the teaching. And I was actually I went to El Salvador on this, like soul seeking journey.Lesley Logan I love how, I love either Costa Rica, El Salvador, it's like (Kate: Right) somewhere International, we all have to go to our eat, pray, love moment.Kate Hutson Yes. Somewhere with like a jungle on a beach where you can figure things out. And I'm sitting on a beach with this girl that I met on a surfboard. And I'm telling her like, "I don't know what to do next in my career. I've got to get out of corporate. I want to help women in the corporate world to advance their skills step into their power. How do I do this?" And she's like, "You need to become a coach, like a life coach or a career coach, you need to become a coach." I'm like, "Okay, I'll think on it." (Lesley: Yeah) So I get home from El Salvador, it stuck with me. And I actually started researching just female coaches, but I thought looked cool on LinkedIn. And I reached out. And I'm like, "Can I borrow 15 minutes of your time and just like, ask you questions about what you do, how you got into it, what your day looks like." (Lesley: And they said, yes?) Yeah. (Lesley: That is so crazy. That's amazing.) Right. I know. And I started to kind of just like, build that network of other coaches and pick their brains and realize, like, "Yeah, this is a good fit for me. I can do what they're doing, and I can do it well, and I would love it like this can be a real career." And so from there, I was like, "I'm doing this." I quit my full time job. I did get certified as a coach through the Health Coach Institute. It was like a six month online training. And immediately after completing the training, I launched my business online and the rest is history.Lesley Logan That is amazing. Okay, so What what did you do from graduation to first client to make yourself realize that you were what you wanted to be? Because I think a lot of people do a training, I see this in the the world that I'm in, they do a training, but they it's almost like until they're year five, they're so like, well, "I'm, I'm a new, I'm new. I'm a teacher." Like there's just like shyness about it like this. Like maybe they're, they're not validating themselves yet. So what what was that process for you from going from graduation to client?Kate Hutson Yeah, and I think that I knew I wanted to work with professional women. So, I already have that as a baseline. But professional woman, like that's kind of broad. And so starting to work with people who were my friends, people who were in my network, people who had worked under me previously, where I was their leader at a previous job, working with them kind of helps me dialed in like, okay, here are the specifics of what I think are most important. And I know mindset is such like a broad term, and it's kind of a buzzword right now. But I think it's so important, and realizing that the specific mindset of like a corporate woman, and how she develops this mindset of confidence and power, and then utilizes that mindset in her everyday career. That's where I was like, "Okay, this is interesting." If you can develop that powerful, bold, confident mindset. That's where you become truly unstoppable. And it translates into other areas of your life. So I became obsessed with this idea of just like, confidence, being bold, being badass and applying that to personal and professional life.Lesley Logan That's cool. I love this. So all right, this is like where you be, you're the coach, now you've got your coaching all these women. What is it that you see, that is kind of holding women back from stepping into their full power? Because you mentioned that word and like you step into it. So like, what, what, what, is there, is there a common thread? Or is it like, it just depends on the person, but I feel like so many women kind of hold themselves back in everything that they do, like, whether it's being it till they see it or like actually doing the thing that they that they're, they they're in the job, they always wanted and they kind of just feel like we play small.Kate Hutson There's a few common things that I see. And number one, you mentioned playing small. I think that as girls, like we're raised to play small, we're taught to play small, we're programmed to play small, to be agreeable. Like in school, we're rewarded for being obedient for keeping our mouths shut. And as an adult woman in the corporate environment, or as a business owner, like that doesn't serve you anymore. Being like agreeable and obedient, and playing small no longer serves you. So you have to unlearn those behaviors, which is easier for some people than others, depending on your environment, the people around you, the way that maybe the company you're with is pushing you or helping you develop and grow. But coaching and having like a mentor, and that accountability, whether it's formal, formal or informal, can help women unlearn those behaviors that perhaps you grew up with, that are no longer serving you. And it really is like teaching and training yourself in practicing how to be a risk taker, how to be bold, how to be confident, because that that mindset of I no longer need to stay in my lane. I can switch lanes, turn my blinker on anytime I want. Exit here, come back on. That is really powerful for creating change, and you're in your career and your life.Lesley Logan Yeah, oh, I love that that analogy of like, you can just turn your blinker on, you can just change lanes, you can just exit the freeway, you can take the scenic route, you can come back on. Like, I'm a visual person so I just like pictured all of that (Lesley laughs) that's so you're so good at what you do. So, you know, one of, as you said, unlearn. Does that, I mean, as a life coach, I think that's very different than therapy. So is that like more practical stuff that you have people do? Or is it like, they gotta go to therapy and work on that part? How do you, how do you work on that unlearning part.Kate Hutson That's where it gets a little bit more personal and specific, depending on the person. And I think that with coaching, one thing that's so great, it's about being aware of like where you are now, and where you want to go in the future. So therapy is so wonderful for talking through things that have happened in your past and how it's still affecting you, and how you can work through that it might be trauma, it might just be grief, or things that have impacted you. But coaching is more about looking ahead. And like okay, here's where I am now, and I have that awareness. And now what can I do with it? How can I change my habits, my actions, my words, my behaviors, to get to this future point that I want to be at?Lesley Logan Yeah, that's thank you for explaining that because to, I understand the difference between the therapy and the life coaching. Sometimes like Brad who listen to this and somebody says, like, "What is what is this life coaching thing? What is it?" Right. And like that is the most that's the best explanation I've ever heard of like the difference between the two because I think it can get really muddy and people get a little confused. So if you're listening to this and you're wanting to work on the future, that you need a life coach and if you need to work on your stuff, find a therapist. So, okay, you mentioned habits, and mindset and things like that. What are with these with these women that you specifically coach? Like what are some of the habits that you are having them focus on? Or what are what are you seeing that they should be thinking about as far as habits go?Kate Hutson Yeah, so morning routines are huge right now in the personal development world, and you like hear about this from every professional development or personal development book you read. And I am so obsessed with helping my clients dial in an intentional morning. And that can be five minutes or 25 minutes or an hour. But first things first, like if you have something that you need to do in your day, any day, there needs to be some time, some kind of intention behind it. So waking up and starting your day with intention, whether that's moving your body, journaling, meditation, personal reflection, time, whatever it is developing a morning intention that works for you. And that's different from person to person. But starting that off and making it a habit is one way that you can move through your day with a lot more intentionality. Rather than just like putting out fires and being reactive, and letting your day run you, you can start to run your day instead. So in terms of habits, that's where I like to start.Lesley Logan Yeah, okay. I like to call it intentional morning. And the big everyone who's listening knows this. I'm a big morning routine person. I have a very like, I love mine and is now turning to this like three hour (Lesley laughs)Kate Hutson Your skincare, right? You have your skincare.Lesley Logan Oh, yeah, I have, I do that. I have, I mean, well, the morning routine, you know, starts the night before, really. So starts with a nighttime routine. But I do, I have I had this morning walk that like somehow just keeps getting longer. And then like depending on the day, there's you know, other parts to it. But then there's, there's the time that I also put on the air... or the air purifier, there's a whole thing, but I don't think I've ever used an intentional morning. And the reason I do that is when I don't have my intentional morning. It really does set me up in this reactive state. And specifically when we're talking this is in the past when you're listening to everyone. I was on my walk but I was totally breaking all of my rules of my morning routine. I was texting people, I was checking my work email. And of course, at eight o'clock, I see something that's wrong in the business. And I had a complete reaction mode. And I was like, "We have to start this morning over." (Lesley laughs) We have to start over because I really did not set myself up for how I like my days to go.Kate Hutson Exactly. I totally hear you. I noticed a few weeks ago I was getting the Sunday scaries really bad. Which is like pretty unlike me. Usually I'm in a good state over the weekend. But I was like noticing that I was feeling a little bit more anxious than usual on Sundays. And I realized it was because on Sundays I was abandoning what I would call, it's like my typical morning routine. Like I'm a big journaler, that's that's like how I (Lesley: Yeah) set my intention for the day. I wasn't journaling on Sundays and like sleeping in, coffee in bed, doing something different, just like letting the lazy Sunday get get to me. (Lesley: Yeah) And I'm like, if I would just journal and set that morning intention, then I probably could avoid some of this anxious feeling that I'm having and feel like I'm more set up for like a more joyful day. (Lesley: Yeah) And so I actually incorporated the journaling back into my Sunday. And I'm like, "Okay, that was it." All I needed to do was like be intentional about it and not abandon the things that keep me centered and grounded.Lesley Logan Yeah. And I know, from many of the listeners who have reached out, they're like, "But what do I journal?" And I, I'm personally a morning pages kind of person, because I don't I'm a perfectionist, overachiever and recovery. And it's like, I if you don't know the story, my therapist is like, "Do you have a journal?" And I said, "I do." And she's said this is a couple of years ago. And she's like,"Okay." She's like, "Well, I want you to journal every morning." And it's like, "Okay, no problem." And then the week next week go by and I'm like, "So what am I supposed to journal?" Like, I know. I was like what like, "Do I, do I gratitudes do I ...?" And she's like, "Oh my gosh, just brain dump. That's all I want you to do." And it's kind of crazy how amazing that is. But but I know some people have like set they have questions that they ask themselves like what is for the person who doesn't like my morning pages. What else do, what else weather journaling prompts can you be doing?Kate Hutson Yeah, and my journal is all over the place. Like every day, it's something different. But as our square one for somebody who's just getting into journaling, you can simply write like, what do you want your day to look like and feel like? What emotions do you want to feel that day? And then what do you need to do throughout the day to create those emotions. So if you want to feel joyful, if you want to feel energetic, if you want to feel confident, write about how you want to feel and what you can do that day to set yourself up to feel like that. (Lesley: I'm borrowing this.) In that way ... Yeah, go for it. In that way, you're like stating your intention of the day and being proactive. They're not just about like what's happening and what you're accomplishing, but how you want to feel. And if you can do that in advance, then again, you're not just being reactive and putting out fires, you're setting yourself up for success. I'm also big into gratitudes, as well. But sometimes, and I actually had one of my coaches who told me this sometimes on the other hand, if I'm like waking up, and I'm in a really negative headspace, for some reason, I'm tired, I'm upset, I'm frustrated about something, one thing I'll do is get all the negative emotions out on paper. And it's a bit of a brain dump, but it's like a like fire on the page brain dump. And then I'll actually just rip it out of my journal and like, throw it away, I've flushed it down the toilet before. And that (Lesley laughs) is so liberating to just like, get those negative thoughts down on paper and then flush them. I'm like, "Goodbye. You're not staying with me today." And I use that as a tool sometimes. So you can use journaling, however you need to, whatever you wake up at, like whatever headspace you wake up in, your journal is there as a tool for you. And you can use it accordingly.Lesley Logan Oh, I love that permission. Thank you so much for that. And, and I think that's I think that's a really good idea. I know some people somebody told me that they burn their morning pages. And I was like, "Wow." I was doing something the other day, I was trying to burn my sage. And Brad has watched me and he's like, he's like, "Oh, my God, you are gonna burn the house down." I was like, "No, I think I'm okay." He's like, "No, you did not play with fire as a child, you have no idea what you're doing." (Lesley laughs) And of course, I look around the house and it's just like smoke everywhere. So so I need to be supervised on the on the flames. But I like the idea of like, ripping it out and getting rid of it. So it's not you're not carrying it with you. I think that's really great. It also just gave like me 17 new things to try out my on my intentional morning. So, I would love to know, because you mentioned your coach, your life coach, I think a lot of people would probably put you up on some sort of pedestal that like, life is so good for you. It's super, super easy. You've got it all figured out. Because I know we're all imperfect people and we're all in process. What are you currently like working on and being it till you see it in this moment, like what's something that you're focusing on in your career and in your life.Kate Hutson Like you, I'm also a recovering like perfectionist, people pleaser, getting over all of that. And right now I'm in what I'm calling my nofilter era. (Kate laughs) And I used to be like this person that wanted to come across as like shiny and pretty and perfect to everybody. And I'm working with my coach to let go of that. And I can be quite want when I want to be. And usually with my friends and family, and I'm working on just like letting that blunt side come across in an authentic way. That's, that's kind and is is you know, in alignment with my mission and what I want to do, but in a way that's genuine, and is like who I am and not trying to please people and saying 'no' to people or things on my schedule in my life, in my relationships that like aren't in alignment with where I want to go. And it's hard. It's so hard, especially when you've been saying I've been a 'yes' girl forever. And now I'm in my unfiltered era, (Lesley: I love this so much.) saying no. (Lesley: I know.) Yeah.Lesley Logan That's ... Okay. So and maybe, and maybe you're still working on this. Because I love 'no,' I tell people and I'm like, "You think ..." because you can always change your mind. You can always go, "You know what, actually my schedule reopen. You know, is it still available?" If it's not that it wasn't for you because I've been saying forever. And I really thought I heard it from someone else. But I looked it up. And as far as I can tell, I said at first. But if, if I'm wrong, people let me know. But it's like whatever is for you will not pass you. And so when you say no, and then you're like, "Oh, maybe I should have said yes" If it is for you, it won't pass you. You know, like it's gonna come back around. And it's really, it's really insane. There's one opportunity, I had to pick from two things, one that I really loved the other one I loved, and it paid. And I was like, "Oh, I wonder the thing I really love or the thing that I love and it pays?" And I was like, "I kind of actually need to get paid for what I do. So I'm gonna choose that one." And I was like, "I can't believe I'm gonna, like, miss it." And it was 2020. So I got to do both things online. (Kate: Oh my gosh.) How crazy? Because the way it worked out like I had to do it for my house. So I was able to go, "Hey, you know what, I actually can do both things. I'm only teaching at this thing on these times. I can teach at your thing on these times." And I have to do both. And so it's like, you know, be careful ... (Kate: It was meant for you.) And it was totally meant for me and I'm so sorry for the pandemic. No, I'm kidding. I did not cause it but um but I use that as a thing. So I love that you're saying no, I love I think a lot of women are well I think there's a lot of people that are people pleasers, but a lot of women are because we want to be seen as being nice and being a team player and like we don't want to rock the boat. We don't want to anyone to think that we're you know mean or anything like that. What are you doing to like not people please? Like what are you put... is there something you tell yourself? Is there something that you do like to give a pep talk to yourself, what is it because I know I got a lot of people pleasers listening.Kate Hutson Okay, so number one is I've learned to realize that when I'm saying no to something, I'm actually saying yes to something else. So if I think about like, okay, a year ago, I was like itching to get out there, you know, things, I live in California, things were opening back up, I wanted to be social, I want to just like, hang out with my friends all the time. And then I realized I was exhausted. And I, like, hadn't read a book in a month, I was drained. And I'm like, "I need to start saying no to social activities." Right. And it became a lot easier for me to start saying no, when I realized what it was that I was saying yes to. A good night's sleep, a night in bed with a cup of tea and a novel. Quiet time with myself, like in the bathtub. I wasn't getting those things, because I was spending too much time with friends. And when I started to see that I was saying yes to those things. When I said no, it made it a lot easier to say no. So I say that, because for anyone listening, if you're like, I need to get better at saying no, and drawing those boundaries. If you can think about what are you saying yes to when you're saying no to something, it makes it a lot easier to put your foot down and say no, and draw that boundary.Lesley Logan Brilliant. So brilliant. Such a great thing for anyone, whether you think you're a people pleaser or not like just any and that... And you know, you may have to like, I know, for myself, I had to put in my calendar, some of those things that I wanted to be doing. So that when I went to when I was asked like, "Hey, can you go to dinner?" I could see it says read a book, walk the dogs, you know, like have those things in there until it becomes so ingrained in you, you don't have to be reminded of the yes things you know, that might for those of you who need a little bit extra help. That's what really helped me because I was like, oh, I'm going to be, I'm going to have to, when am I going to read that book? And when am I going to walk the dog, who's going to walk these dogs? Because they're not going sleep if they're not walked. Then I'm not ...Kate Hutson And not not confusing your free time with your availability.Lesley Logan Okay, well, then that's another good one. (Lesley and Kate laughs) That is such, yes, yes, yes, yes. Oh, I really love that. That's true. I have so I, I'm, I have a whole way that I do my schedule. So I have like rocks, gemstones and glitter. Because glitter is the stuff you can do it anytime, right? Like glitter, like a glitter like it gets on everything. So if you're like, "What's glitter?" Like if you can do it on the toilet, or you can do it in line at Starbucks. It's glitter, glitter. You know, like, I know, you could probably sign for a mortgage while you're out shopping the way everything's digital. But the truth is, is like anytime you check your email, social media, that's all glitter, paying your bills, you can do that from like automation, the rock, so these like appointments, that's when I go to like when you go to bed when you wake up, it's like when you like those things that are really important to you. And there's like two kinds of rocks. And then there's also the ones that like for work. So like when you'd actually do the thing that you do for like, those are rocks, or they're harder to move, they're kind of have a set time, they're pretty big, they take up space. And that's where they are. And then gemstones is the time that you work on the things that actually you want to have in the future. So these are the things that move your business forward or move your life forward, or things that help you grow into the thing that you want to do. And so I have and my team can see it, they have it has little like the actual emoji of diamonds on all these, like time blocks that are that would be during the day, like when I could be working, but I'm not available. That is my gemstone time. And so when they're like, "Oh, when can I book these things?" I'm like, "You can book in the office hours," but you can't book it. And just because it looks like it's available doesn't mean it's free.Kate Hutson That is genius. And it also shows me that you're really clear on for you what are the priorities and values and things that matter most your WMI what's most important for moving you forward? Because that's another tip for saying no and pushing back against people pleasing is to get really clear on what is most important to you. What are your priorities? What are your values? What are the big rocks or gemstones that that are going to move you forward? And not what everyone else would think is wonderful if you are going to do but in your heart of hearts, like what is important to you. And then pushing back against everything that's not that and being able to say no to things that aren't part of your priorities and values and most important things in your life. And when you say no to other things. It's almost this like magnetic no. Where you say no, and it's a magnet for the things that are meant to be yours. And I love that because it's such a good reflection of what matters to you, and when you can make your actions in alignment with your values that's where the magic starts happening.Lesley Logan I love it, a magnet no. That's great. We that's amazing. I we need it that needs to be like an actual magnet, or something like that has to be something like physical for that. Kate, you need to have merch. All right. We're going to take a brief pause and then we'll find out where we can find you, follow you, learn from you, coach with you and all that.Okay, Kate, where now that everyone is like, "I need to be a magnet for the yes stuff." And you know, have these magnetic, magnetic propelling noes. What, where can they find you? Where can they coach with you? What do you got?Kate Hutson Yeah, my coaching business is called Shattered Glass Coaching. I'm all about the female empowerment. My website is shatteredglasscoaching.com. And that's where you can read about my 90 Day one on one coaching program. I have offered group programs in the past and probably will in the future, but currently just one on one coaching and you can book a free call there. And then you can find me on Instagram at @shattered.glass.coaching. I release content daily, so you can find me there.Lesley Logan Oh, I love. Also, there's a necklace. That's a shattered glass. We'll talk about it offline. I'll put it in the show notes, everyone. Don't worry. But anyways, we have to get to your BE IT action items that's most important right now. So bold, executable, intrinsic or targeted action steps people can take to be it till they see it, what do you have?Kate Hutson Once a month, for the rest of the year, try something new that you've never tried before. Can be something physical, like trying a kickboxing class or a Pilates class, if you've never tried it. It can be a new creative hobby, like trying out photography, can be going to a social or networking event that you've never tried before. But go to at least one new thing every month for the rest of the year. So as we're, as we're recording this, there's six months left. (Lesley: Yeah) So six opportunities to do that. And when you do this, notice how it builds upon your competent mindset. And you might try something new and you might fail. Or you might try something new and you might succeed. And when you do that time after time, it starts to build upon your confidence and translate into every other area of your life.Lesley Logan Oh, I'm into this. I'm so into this. I like a good challenge. And I also, Brad and I did The Artists Way, we had to do a new thing every week by yourself. (Kate: Every week. Oh.) Yeah, it's a little intense. It didn't have to be nothing new but it had to be something by yourself. It's not your normal thing. So like if you normally you know go see like walk around your neighborhood, like go to a garden and walk around the garden you know that kind of a thing. And it was for those of you who are taking on this action, it's okay if it's really hard in the beginning and it's okay (Kate: Yeah) if you talk yourself out of. I remember driving to a bookstore I'm going, "Do I really want to go in?" I'm like, "Oh my gosh, it's a bookstore like what is gonna happen to me this bookstore." You know so so but I remember going it'd be so much easier if I could just go to the thing that I always do. But it you're right it's so bold and to try something else and then also you get used to failing or used to succeeding or used to doing new things and being uncomfortable. I love this so much. Kate, you're amazing. Thank you for being here. Everyone, how are you going to use these tips in your life? Show Notes Just recently we did a show with Terry Hershey on Creating Inner Space for Change. The idea was that in order for meaningful life change to occur, you must first “declutter” your mind and your activities. I believe it is show #231, so listeners might want to check that one out because today I plan to talk more about what “Life Change” might look like. What does it mean to live with meaning, adventure, and awe? Although, it's the theme of our web presence and yet I am not sure I have ever addressed the subject on a podcast. Well, today is the day. As an Executive Life Coach, I work with highly successful individuals who are planning for greater meaning in their life either through their career or by means of a meaningful retirement. So, I “live” these ideas. And as a lover of a life of meaning, adventure, and awe my inner core drives me to pursue the process of greater and greater alignment with my core self. In our time today I plan to talk around three issues: the Drivers, Restraints, and Processes for to Life Change. In other words… how can we enter our Next Chapter because, like it or not, every day is a new chapter and it is up to you to determine the content of that chapter. You “get to” determine the content of your life.
