That audio from Te Papa is what scientists think a Moa might have sounded like back when they were roaming the country. Back in 2019 Ranfurly man Michael Johnston was out walking the dogs when he spotted moa footprints fossilised in the bed of the Kyeburn River. Since then, they've been studied by scientists to learn about the moa that made the footprints - and what's four years of waiting when it turns out, some of these footprints are at least 3.6 million years old. Tūhura Otago Museum natural science curator Kane Fleury spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.

This week I wander off the topic of Life Extension (more next episode) to take advantage of an opportunity to interview an anthropologist about the White Sands footprints. Not since the Laetoli Australopithecus prints has a set of human footprints rocked the world of paleontology like those found in White Sands, New Mexico. Studies have dated these prints to 21-23,000 year ago, more than 6000 years older than humans were known to have arrived in the Americas! Many scientist are convinced the date is accurate; but if it is, it means a reshaping of an entire paradigm. In this episode I speak with Dr. Edward Jolie about his work, and about those prints. It's just over three years since this podcast began and so, as a little celebration of that, and to say thank you to all of you who take the time to listen, here's the theme tune to the podcast. I wrote this piece of music many years ago as a birthday present for my wife, Susanna, without whom very little would be possible. It's been played live a fair few times in various bands I've worked with, but for a long time it remained unrecorded. Then, in 2017, the opportunity arose to record it in the midst of a session that, alas, never got released. Hey ho . . . but that's the way it goes sometimes. I doubt it will ever get a proper release so this mini-release here will have to do. I hope you will enjoy it in the absence of a regular episode this week. "New Heaven", written by Andrew J. Brown and played by Chris Ingham (piano), Paul Higgs (trumpet), Russ Morgan (drums) and Andrew J. Brown (double bass) Thanks for listening. Just to note that all the texts of these podcasts are available on my blog. You'll also find there a brief biography, info about my career as a musician, & some photography. Feel free to drop by & say hello. Email: caute.brown[at]gmail.com

Here are the timestamps for this episode: Albums releasing this week: 3:45 Priscilla: 7:30 The Marvels: 12:50 Digital Footprints and Oversharing: 14:50
The Devil's Footprints was a phenomenon that occurred during February 1855 around the Exe Estuary in East and South Devon, England. After a heavy snowfall, trails of hoof-like marks appeared overnight in the snow covering a total distance of some 40 to 100 miles (60 to 160 km). The footprints were so called because some persons suggested that they were the tracks of Satan and made comparisons to a cloven hoof. Many theories have been made to explain the incident, and some aspects of its veracity have also been questioned.Support the pod:www.patreon.com/monsterfuzzCheck out our merch:https://monster-fuzz.creator-spring.comEverything else!www.linktr.ee/monsterfuzz

He literally steps us through, sharing an incredible wealth of information that will be super helpful for you. Having your team working together the right way will be essential for achieving compliance in the most simple and streamlined way. As you walk through the white gypsum sands of White Sands National Park in southern New Mexico, your footprints will likely be quickly erased by shifting winds. So it's somewhat of a phenomenon of nature that the oldest footprints ever discovered in North America are not only found here — in perfect form, having withstood time and weather — but show that ancient humans lived here much earlier than previously believed. A research team from the U-S Geological Survey earlier this month strengthened their findings released in 2021 that dated these footprints to as much as 23,000 years old. That finding erased previous theories that humans first arrived in North America some 11,000 years ago, after the end of the last Ice Age. This week the Traveler's Lynn Riddick talks with key researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey team about their initial analysis of the footprints as well as their follow-up study that confirmed the age dating…and what it all means to our long-sought understanding of human colonization on this continent.
We discuss some recent scientific discoveries in detail, reading from articles and the source papers about ancient solar storms that caused a massive increase in Carbon 14 in the atmosphere, and fossil prints at White Sands that definitively breaks the "Clovis First" model of the peopling of the Americas. In the final segment we discuss a bit about where our minds are at regarding all these mysteries, as well as future plans for exploration on the podcast and in the field. Hard to believe we've published 300 2+ hour episodes! Thanks for sticking with us, there's more to come! Hello! This is episode 293, and in it, I'm talking with Jeremy Spencer, builder, thermal performance assessor and co-owner at Positive Footprints. This episode is part of a special series on the National Construction Code, and NCC 2022. [For all resources mentioned in this podcast and a free, downloadable PDF transcript, head to www.undercoverarchitect.com/293] Long time listeners to the podcast will remember Jeremy's previous appearance on Episode 232 and 233, where he talked about low carbon and zero carbon homes, as well as his work in Positive Footprints (and more broadly across the industry) to educate and improve knowledge and execution in this area. He's back in this series on the National Construction Code to help us understand more about the upgrades in NCC2022, the new seven star rating, what will impact you achieving it, and in particular the introduction of a ‘Whole of Home' scheme for energy performance. My conversation with Jeremy will run over this and the next two episodes, as he shares so much wisdom, detail and actionable information. It's seriously useful knowledge for anyone who is building or renovating, and especially for anyone needing to know more about achieving seven stars, and the Whole of Home rating system. Podcast host and historic preservationist Mary Donohue started following a project on Facebook four or five years ago. It was based on a very simple idea-sleeping overnight in historic buildings-but it was also genius. The project was the Slave Dwelling Project. Joseph McGill,Jr., a Black historic preservationist and Civil War reenactor based in South Carolina, had begun this groundbreaking project to sleep overnight in the countless and very underappreciated former slave dwellings that still stand across the country. What has this to do with Connecticut? McGill not only sleeps at residences across the South but the North and West too. In Connecticut, he has slept at buildings owned by the Greenwich Historical Society and in New London at the Hempstead Houses owned by Connecticut Landmarks. At each stop, events and campfires are held to explore with the public the way the history of the enslaved has been told. When Donohue discovered that Joe had a new book coming out in the summer of 2023, she immediately pre-ordered it and read it the week she received it. Sleeping with the Ancestors How I Followed the Footprints of Slavery authored by Joseph McGill, Jr. and journalist Herb Frazier was published by Hachette Books. In this episode, Donohue interviews author Joe McGill, Jr. and Nicole Thomas. Thomas was born and raised in New London. She gained in interest in local history 20 years ago after her mother purchased a historic home. Nicole works for Connecticut Landmarks as the Assistant Site Administrator at the Hempsted Houses Museum and is also a researcher for New London's Black Heritage Trail. The New London Black Heritage Trail was honored as a History Gamechanger Project by Connecticut Explored in 2022. Thanks to our guests author and historic preservationist Joe McGill, Jr. and historian and site manager Nicole Thomas. To find out more about the Slave Dwelling Project, go to their website at slavedwellingproject.org and follow Joe on Facebook on the Slave Dwelling Project page. His book is available on Amazon. A new analysis of ancient footprints in New Mexico adds to the debate about when humans arrived in North America. Plus, astronomer Dean Regas offers tips for safe viewing of Saturday's eclipse. New Data Support Human Arrival In North America 22,000 Years AgoIn 2021, scientists uncovered ancient human footprints in White Sands, New Mexico. Dating of the footprints suggested that people arrived in North America thousands of years earlier than anthropologists had thought. It sparked fierce debate among researchers, some of whom raised concerns about the radiocarbon dating process used in the original study. Now, a new study provides additional data supporting humans' arrival in North America 22,000 years ago.Ira talks with Maggie Koerth, editorial lead at Carbon Plan about the latest in this debate about the peopling of North America and other top science news of the week including how solar storms affect bird migration, why ants are getting ensnared in plastic, and how climate change is improving Bordeaux wine. This Weekend's ‘Ring Of Fire' EclipseThis Saturday, much of the continental United States will be treated to an astronomical event—an annular solar eclipse. In this type of eclipse, the apparent sizes of the moon and sun don't align perfectly to Earth-bound viewers, resulting in a solar “ring of fire” shining around the edges of a moon nestled inside the boundaries of the sun.The best viewing will come in a 125-mile-wide band known as the path of annularity, which will stretch from Eugene, Oregon to San Antonio, Texas, and then on into Mexico and Central America. Viewers outside that band will still be able to see some parts of the eclipse, with the percent coverage depending on how far they are from that central line. Even though the sun will be partly covered, it is NOT safe to look directly at the sun without eclipse glasses. If you don't have glasses, you can look at a projection of the sun through a pinhole onto the ground or another surface—but don't look through the pinhole at the sun. Astronomer and author Dean Regas joins Ira for an eclipse preview, and to offer viewing tips on when, where, and how to best view the solar event.
