Rigel Robinson is a member of the Berkeley City Council, representing District 7 (encompassing UC Berkeley). As the region is growing, as the state is growing, we should be educating more Californians. I believe that educating more young people is a good thing—full stop. Frances Dinkelspiel is working hard to counter the decline of local reporting. The co-founder of Berkeleyside, Oaklandside, and their parent organization Cityside believes it is more important for us to know what's going on in our neighborhoods than what's happening 6,000 miles away. The longtime Bay Area author and journalist shares her journey and what's at stake for our communities.
Jill reviews Tangled Vines: Greed, Murder, Obsession, and an Arsonist in the Vineyards of California by Frances Dinkelspiel
It was such an honor for us to be guests on the Texas Wine & True Crime podcast, and we’re so excited that we get to share this interview with our fans, too! Brandy Diamond & Jaimee Hardwidge are such fun hosts, and the content of the podcast was already a topic we thought about a lot — the greatest wine crime in history! We want to thank Brandy & Jaimee for having us on their show, but we also want to give a shout-out to Frances Dinkelspiel, author of Tangled Vines: Greed, Murder, Obsession, and an Arsonist in the Vineyards of California. We interview Frances in Season Two, but if you haven’t heard her speak on this case, you might want to go back and check it out. But even better, read her book — it is one of the best reads about wine and their twisty side of the industry you’ll ever get your hands on. We promise: This story is absolutely worth repeating! By the way, if you enjoyed our interview on Texas Wine & True Crime, they have loads of other fun episodes that span two seasons! You can find Brandy & Jamiee on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or where you listen to your favorite shows! Frances Dinkelspiel has written two New York Times best-selling books; the latest was Tangled Vines: Greed, Murder, Obsession, and an Arson in the Vineyards of California. She follows the trails of some of the most notorious deceitful events in the wine trade...and it ain't pretty. You will want to read the book immediately.
When host, Lou Zant, first moved to the California Wine Country, he came across a book called, Tangled Vines: Greed, Murder, Obsession and an Arsonist in the Vineyards of California. Lou absolutely devoured the book because Frances Dinkelspiel is a marvelous storyteller, but also, this book mixes the history of winemaking in California — and, one of the most outrageous wine crimes ever — with a very personal quest to find out if the loss of a priceless family heirloom can ever be truly reconciled. Then, after Meredith Griffin read the book, it was obvious that these two were going to need to talk about it with their listeners! And when Frances accepted our invitation to be on the Major Crush Podcast, it felt like one of the most incredible "gets" we've had so far! If you're looking for a book to immerse yourself in, or, if you are in a book club and searching for a story that will pair well with friends and the perfect glass of wine, Tangled Vines (https://francesdinkelspiel.com/) IS the book for you! We hope to share more stories from this fantastic author — and friend of the podcast — but for now, plan to lose yourself in a truly fascinating interview! All three parts are worthy reads. Our white wine recommendation this week is the 2012 Monte Tondo Soave Classico. This vintage may be hard to locate because the current offering is from 2013. Any wine can age, but does it age well or better yet improve is the question? The 2012 offering from Monte Tondo is a wonderful sipper to usher in autumn. Pear and honeyed lemon aromas are complimented by juicy pear and peach flavors on the palate. The finish is of medium length and very smooth . This Soave has indeed aged well. Soave works well with appetizers, fried foods, vegetables and pasta dishes with lightly flavored sauces. 12.5% alc $15 -$17If you're looking for a nice bottle of Malbec don't miss out on the 2012 Bodegas Colome. Opaque in the glass with a blueberry, boysenberry, baking spice nose. On palate more red fruits, cocoa, fig and spice. Firmly tannic and slightly chewy this wine calls for steak and boldly flavored meat dishes. 14.5% alc $17 - $20Thank you for listening and tell a friend about us. Cheers!
