In this edition of the Summer History Reading Book Club, Charlie Higson is on a witch hunt.As a woman, if you lived in Scotland in the 1500s, there was a very good chance that you, or someone you knew, would be tried as a witch. Witch hunts ripped through the country for over 150 years, with at least 4,000 accused, and many women's fates sealed by a grizzly execution of strangulation, followed by burning. In their book How to Kill A Witch: A Guide For The Patriarchy writers and podcasters Claire Mitchell, KC, and Zoe Venditozzi, have delved deeply into just why the trials exploded in Scotland to such a degree and with wit, and a sense of outrage, they attempt to inhabit the minds of the, often male, persecutors, revealing the inner workings of exactly why the Patriarchy went to such extraordinary lengths to silence women. Angela Foster brings practical tips and wisdom to our understanding of the spirits of earth, water, air and fire from Chapter 1 & 2 of Nature Spirits by Rudolf Steiner. She invites us to be active in our striving for perception of these beings, while at the same time asking us to slow down and take a moment to be still and perceive the spiritual realm right beyond the physically perceptible world we live in. Her down to earth advice and deep understanding of Steiner's worldview brings us closer to understanding these elemental beings and their relationships with each other and human beings. Angela and I know that in our time, we can't do this work alone. Thanks for joining us and tuning in! In this edition of Charlie Higson's Summer Reading History Book Club, he looks at the history between England and India. Before the East India Company and before the British Empire, England was an unimportant backwater. Seeking better fortunes, 16th and 17th century merchants ventured to the empire of the mighty Mughals, attempting to sell coarse woollen broadcloth that nobody really wanted. It was a land ruled from the palatial towers by women – the formidable Empress Nur Jahan Begim, the enterprising Queen Mother Maryam al-Zamani, and the intrepid Princess Jahanara Begim. Their collision of worlds helped connect East and West, launching a tempestuous period of globalisation spanning from the Chinese opium trade to the slave trade in the Americas.Joining Charlie to explain this fascinating story is Dr Lubaaba Al-Azami, whose book 'Travellers in the Golden Realm' traces the origins of a relationship between two nations – one outsider and one superpower – whose cultures remain inextricably linked to this day. In this powerful and heartfelt message, Pastor Bruce Aubrey brings a timely word to Star Point Church, exploring the inseparable connection between truth and love through the lens of 2 John. As part of the church's “Summer Book Club” series, Aubrey dives deep into the rich theology of this brief New Testament letter, calling believers to walk faithfully in the truth of God's Word while loving one another with sincerity and obedience. Rooted in the unchanging gospel, this sermon emphasizes the reliability of Scripture, the person of Jesus Christ, and the need for discernment in an age of deception. Pastor Aubrey reminds us that truth without love becomes harsh, and love without truth becomes hollow—but together, they reflect the very heart of God. Whether you're new to the Bible or seasoned in your faith, this message invites you to live more deeply in the grace, truth, and love of Christ.

Tess Parker, astrologer, writer and overall amazing human, shares her wit and wisdom with us as we work through The Elemental Spirits of Birth and Death, a lecture by Rudolf Steiner from 1917 that's amazingly applicable to our time. In true Steiner form, you might think this book is about trees or gnomes, but nope. It's about so much more than that, and in particular, the destructive nature of these elementals and their connection to technology and commerce. We cover so many topics! AI, plant medicine, the environment, and virtues. Together, we lean into this spiritual framework that helps us understand the bigger picture and role of these spirits in our world. In this episode of Charlie Higson's Summer Reading History Book Club, we're edging away from the Fourteenth Century and the Wars of The Roses. Well, when I say edging, I mean hurtling, as we reach the 20th, and indeed the 21st Century, to a group of young men whose impact on culture and society, fashion and of course music is pretty hard to overstate. In Stuart Maconie's new book, With A Little Help from Their Friends: The Beatles Changed the World, but Who Changed Theirs?, Stuart discusses some of the people around this infamous band who irrevocably altered the world for all of us. Yes, Summer is here and for many, that means a break and the chance to dig into a good book.In this special set of episodes, to run through July and August, Charlie Higson delves headfirst into some of the current crop of history books and invites the authors onto the podcast. In 1603 England was on the edge of crisis. Queen Elizabeth I had died, bringing the Tudor line to an end.Enter King James, who reached London after an unprecedented procession from Scotland. James established a new dynasty on the English throne and the first 'united' kingdom of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales was born. The Stuarts had arrived. But first, this new 'Great Britain' had to play catch up. England was behind, but James's global ambitions began to shift the tide. Ships departed London for America, Russia, Persia, India and Japan, and as the fledgling East India Company became ever closer to the crown, the seeds of the future British Empire were sown.Professor Anna Whitelock's new book The Sun Rising: James I and the Dawn of a Global Britain tells this fascinating story and is the subject of this episode of Willy Willy Harry Stee. Tanya and Carrie discuss Part 1 of "Music as a Vehicle" by Ashley Cuthbertson as part of the 2025 Music Teacher Coffee Talk summer book club.
It's almost summer, so let's talk about one of my favorite ways to pursue intentional connection with our kids and friends—having a book club! Reading books together has been one of the most connecting activities for me since I was a little girl and my mom read aloud with me. It has remained that in my life until now, as I have read books with my kids and with my friends. And then what has taken our reading together to the next level is to celebrate the books we've read together by having a book club meeting/celebration—you can call it what you want. These book club celebrations have been a huge part of my kids' childhood. They have loved them! And still do. And the book club I have had with my own friends for 12 years is still going strong and bringing me so much joy!Book clubs are a way to take reading to the next level and make it feel more special. Invite friends! Make fun snacks! Dress up! Or just gather some friends to sit around the picnic table, have some popsicles or iced tea, and talk about the book you read together. No matter how you do it, being intentional about gathering to read a book together and then celebrating it will be a gift in your life. And I am inviting you to try it this summer! Some of the resources mentioned in this episode:My book, Adventuring Together, that has a whole chapter with instructions for a kid or mom book club and book lists. I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.I am chatting with in-the-trenches homemaker, Cara Semler, about her experience of keeping a home for the last 10 years with husband, Ross. Cara was deeply influenced by the beautiful, calm home her mother kept and wanted that for her own home; she just didn't realize how much discipline would be required on her part to follow in her mother's homemaking footsteps. Cara also shares her struggle to trust the Lord with her desire to own a home and how she learned to embrace homemaking even as a renter. As usual we talk about Cara's homemaking wins, fails, tips and recipes. AND…. I am pulling out some Historical Homemaking Hints for you…we haven't done those in a while! I hope you enjoy them. This is an episode of TED Talks Daily, another podcast from the TED Audio Collective. It's a special episode of the TED Talks Daily Summer Book Club series. Join host Elise Hu as she interviews TED speakers about their books and their ideas beyond the page. As a sex educator and author, Emily Nagoski is renowned for dismantling the sexual myths that surround us, and replacing them with healthy ideas, backed by science. And then…her own sex life fell apart. Her latest book, “Come Together, the Science (and Art!) of Creating Lasting Sexual Connections,” is Emily's attempt to research her way out of her own sexual desert. The result is a book that delights with humor and insights for anyone looking to improve their own relationship to pleasure and intimacy. This interview was recorded live as part of the TED Membership program. TED Members are invited to attend our live recordings and participate in Q&As with authors.
