Orion is packed with stars that are much bigger, brighter, and heavier than the Sun. But only one of them is likely to draw hisses from Harry Potter fans: Bellatrix. Its name comes from Latin, and means “female warrior.” The name was applied to one of Harry Potter’s nastiest foes – Bellatrix Lestrange. Regardless of its name, the star itself is impressive. It’s almost eight times the mass of the Sun, so it “burns” its nuclear fuel in a hurry. As a result, the surface of Bellatrix is tens of thousands of degrees hotter than the Sun. Combined with its great size, that makes the star thousands of times brighter than the Sun. Because of its high-speed reactions, Bellatrix won’t live very long. The star is about 25 million years old – just half of one percent the age of the Sun. Yet it will expire in a few million years. It’s probably not massive enough to explode as a supernova. Instead, it will expel its outer layers in a more gentle process. That will leave a small, hot, dense corpse – a feeble ending for a powerful star. Orion is in the west and southwest at nightfall. Look for its three-star belt, parallel to the horizon. The hunter’s brightest stars, Betelgeuse and Rigel, stand above and below the belt. Bellatrix is the next-brightest, to the upper right of the belt. It’s among the brightest stars in the night sky. Script by Damond Benningfield
In This Episode of The Work Podcast:☕ Coffee talk — Robert sticks with black, Greg grabs some mystery syrup from the breakroom.
Rigel is one of the more impressive stars in our part of the galaxy: It’s the seventh-brightest star in the night sky, it’s many times the size and mass of the Sun, and it’s fated to explode as a supernova. But a closer look shows that Rigel is even more impressive than it seems. It appears to be a system of at least four stars – the one that’s visible to the eye alone, plus three others that are grouped fairly close together. The companions include a binary – two stars locked in a tight orbit around each other – plus a third star that’s farther away. All three companions are three to four times the mass of the Sun. That puts them in the top one percent of all stars in the galaxy. The stars in the binary orbit each other once every 10 days. At the system’s distance of more than 850 light-years, not even the biggest telescopes can see them as individual stars. Instead, astronomers use special instruments to tell them apart. The third star is far enough from the others that it’s easy to see on its own. This triplet of stars is about a quarter of a light-year from the bright star that’s visible to our eyes alone. At that separation, it would take at least 24,000 years for the bright star and the triplets to orbit each other. Rigel is the foot of Orion the hunter. The constellation is low in the eastern sky at nightfall. Look for its three-star belt extending upward from the horizon. Rigel is to the right of the belt. Script by Damond Benningfield
The bright orange star that marks the shoulder of Orion gets most of the attention, but the hunter’s blue-white heel is even brighter. And it faces a similar fate: Both stars will blast themselves to bits. The shoulder is represented by Betelgeuse. The supergiant star has been unpredictable in recent years. It’s grown dramatically fainter and brighter – the result of “puffs” of gas from its surface that are many times the size of the Sun. The heel is marked by Rigel. The star appears to be more than 850 light-years away, although there’s a good bit of wiggle room. The details of its mass, size, and brightness all depend on that number. But the best estimates say that Rigel is about 20 times more massive than the Sun, dozens of times wider, and tens of thousands of times brighter. Rigel’s color tells us that its surface is much hotter than the surface of Betelgeuse. Rigel might once have looked like Betelgeuse does today. But changes in its core caused the star to shrink and get hotter. Sometime in the next couple of million years, the core will die and collapse. Rigel’s outer layers will explode as a supernova. That will seed the space around it with the raw materials for future stars and planets. Rigel is low in the east-southeast at nightfall. It’s to the right of Orion’s three-star belt, which extends upward from the horizon. Rigel is the seventh-brightest star system in the night sky, so you can’t miss it. More about Rigel tomorrow. This time of year is pretty inviting for some evening skywatching. The evening hours are warm but not usually too hot, and spring storm activity generally hasn't reached its peak — pleasant conditions for watching the stars. Unfortunately, one of the most beautiful star patterns is dropping from view, so there aren't many more weeks to enjoy it. Orion the hunter is low in the west as night falls. Its three-star belt stands almost parallel to the horizon. And its two brightest stars bracket the belt: orange Betelgeuse above, and blue-white Rigel below. Orion climbs into prominence in the evening sky around Thanksgiving and Christmas. At that time of year, it's in view for most of the night. As the months roll by, though, so does Orion. The constellation rises earlier each night, so by late February, it's halfway across the southern sky at nightfall. And now, it's about to drop from view. There's only an hour or two of really good viewing time — between the end of twilight and the time Orion's stars begin to set. And that viewing window gets shorter by the night. By mid-May, it'll be hard to see the constellation at all. Fortunately, though, there's still a lot to look at after Orion passes from view. And the hunter won't stay gone forever. He'll begin to climb into the morning sky in August, and return to the evening sky during the longer, colder nights at year's end. Script by Damond Benningfield

Stars come in a whole spectrum of colors, from icy blue to deep red. But our eyes can see the color in only a few stars — most of them are simply specks of white. That's because most stars are too faint to show off their palette. The human eye can pick out the colors of only the brightest ones. Our eyes contain two types of light receptors: rods and cones. They're in the retina, at the back of the eye. There are about a hundred million rods. They're sensitive to low levels of light, so they allow us to see in the dark. But they don't see the world as clearly as cones. And they don't see colors. The eye contains only about six million cones. They provide a sharper view. And they are sensitive to colors — some see red, others blue, and still others green. But they don't activate when the light is faint. Ergo, they see the colors in bright stars, but not in faint ones. Of course, the number of stars for which we see colors depends on the viewer. Some people have a greater sensitivity to color than others. Most of us can see color in some of the brighter stars in view this evening. Betelgeuse, well up in the south-southwest at nightfall, is bright orange. So is Aldebaran, to its right. Rigel, below Betelgeuse, is blue-white, as is Regulus, in the east. Some bright stars don't show any color. The best example is Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, which is in the south. It shines pure white — its true color. Script by Damond Benningfield

The brightest star of Orion stands due south at nightfall, marking one of the hunter's feet. Rigel shines blue-white — a dramatic contrast to orange Betelgeuse, Orion's second-brightest light. Both stars are supergiants — stars that are among the biggest and heaviest in the galaxy. Rigel, for example, is up to a couple of dozen times the mass of the Sun, and perhaps 70 times the Sun's diameter. But the different colors tell us that the surface temperatures of Rigel and Betelgeuse are quite different. Betelgeuse is much cooler than the Sun, while Rigel is thousands of degrees hotter. That may be an indication that they're in different phases. Both stars are destined to end their lives as supernovas — powerful explosions that leave only dense, crushed cores. But it's still not clear how that plays out. Astronomers aren't sure if a supergiant first becomes red, then evolves to a blue phase, or does things in the opposite order, or oscillates between phases. It's also possible that some supergiants explode while they're red, while others go out while they're blue. Either way, both stars are doomed. Bright blue Rigel is more than 850 light-years away. That's a long way for a star that's visible to the eye alone — and especially for one that bright. It's such a beacon because it's hundreds of thousands of times brighter than the Sun — a big, hot, bright blue star with a brighter future. Script by Damond Benningfield

Perhaps the most important number that astronomers need to know about a star is its distance. That allows them to calculate the star’s true brightness, which helps them calculate the star’s mass, its stage in life, and much more.An example is Arneb, the brightest star of Lepus, the rabbit. At nightfall, the constellation stands to the lower right of Orion, below Rigel, the star that marks the hunter’s foot.Estimates of Arneb’s distance vary by quite a bit — from as close as about 1300 light-years, to as far as about 2200. Astronomers compare the star’s distance to how bright it appears in our sky to determine its true brightness. At the lesser distance, the star would be more than three times fainter than at the greater distance. And that factors into the understanding of the star’s mass, its life cycle, and its fate.Probably the best measurement of the distance comes from Gaia, a space telescope. It’s measured the distances to roughly 1.7 billion stars. Above Earth’s atmosphere, it has a sharp view of the heavens, helping it to make more precise measurements.Gaia says that Arneb is a little more than 1900 light-years away. That means the star is roughly 10,000 times brighter than the Sun. It’s a supergiant — it’s many times the size and mass of the Sun. And it’s nearing the end of its life. In the next million years or so, it’s expected to explode as a supernova — giving Orion a real hotfoot. Script by Damond Benningfield
Several especially bright stars highlight the eastern sky on January evenings. The list includes Betelgeuse and Rigel in Orion, Pollux and Castor in Gemini, and the brightest star of all, Sirius, in the big dog.For millennia, these and other stars were guiding lights, helping people find their way around the world — and beyond.Celestial navigation combines observations of the positions of two or more stars or other celestial bodies, precise timing, and some calculations. A skilled navigator can use the technique to reach a destination with a high degree of accuracy — to within a few hundred yards and a couple of minutes.Centuries ago, Polynesian sailors used the technique to island-hop across the Pacific Ocean. European explores used it to find their way to the Americas and the Far East. American sailors used it as well, plying the world’s oceans in times of war and peace. And Apollo astronauts used it to help them get to the Moon. With the advent of GPS in the 1980s and ’90s, though, celestial navigation began to die off. GPS is easier to use and more accurate. The United States Naval Academy even dropped celestial navigation from its classes. But a few years ago, the academy restored its training — in part because technology can fail or be blocked. Several especially bright stars highlight the eastern sky on January evenings. The list includes Betelgeuse and Rigel in Orion, Pollux and Castor in Gemini, and the brightest star of all, Sirius, in the big dog. For millennia, these and other stars were guiding lights, helping people find their way around the world — and beyond. Celestial navigation combines observations of the positions of two or more stars or other celestial bodies, precise timing, and some calculations. Our last episode was cut a bit short when Rigel woke up from his nap, so for this episode, I focus on how my spirituality was affected by my recent competition season. I don't discuss things like this on the podcast, but I'm planning to incorporate more Live Savage principles into the show and I thought this was a good place to start. What you'll hear: Pushing my body to the limit during the prep and the spiritual awakening I experienced as a result (5:18) The solace I find in pushing myself to the brink and the resulting self-reflection (10:14) Leaning on God for support (12:02) Struggling to find clarity on my beliefs in my younger years and working with Crystal to come to a deeper spiritual understanding (15:24) Valuing objectivity and data-driven pursuits of knowledge but acknowledging the limitations of science (20:33) The benefits of meditation during a challenging competition prep (26:21) Finding peace and clarity by surrendering my burdens to God (31:44) The importance of gratitude (37:50) If you loved this episode and our podcast, please take some time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts, or drop us a comment below!
To wrap up the competition season, I invited my lovely wife Crystal to the podcast to share her experience living with me during the last 33 weeks. Those who have followed me for a while know that Crystal is a source of strength and support in my life, and I couldn't have made it through this prep season without her. What we discussed: Prepping all of my meals and the little annoyances that come along with that (4:50) The importance of meal prepping during a competition prep season and Crystal's experience with that over the years (6:48) Relationship dynamics during the prep and the challenges we faced (12:11) Becoming intimate in different ways when my libido took a dive (18:39) Handling the total chaos of running a business and traveling with Rigel (20:29) Childcare challenges on the road and the differences between managing Rigel in a controlled environment vs. a public setting (23:22) Traveling in the rig vs. flying and which was more convenient (28:39) What it was like for Crystal to live with me during the entire competition prep phase and her opinions on the outcome (34:40) Focusing on what I'm grateful for and wrapping up this competition season (40:18) If you loved this episode and our podcast, please take some time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts, or drop us a comment below!
