In today's episode, which is part one of two, Elena Brooks from Dandelion Vineyards shares how she went from making pantyhose-filtered wines as a teenager in Bulgaria to a true winemaking visionary in South Australia. Elena has multiple wine brands, including three that we import: Dandelion, Sister's Run, and Heirloom Vineyards. All of these brands are based in McLaren Vale but feature varietal wines from all over South Australia. Elena makes some of our highest volume wines, but don't confuse that for low quality. These wines often come from single, old-vine sites, and they are drinkable and acid-driven while staying true to the benchmark styles of their respective regions. Elena has made quite a name for herself in Australia and the US, and her path to success success was entirely self-made. It involved immigrating from Bulgaria to Australia around the age of twenty and learning the customs and language of a new country. In this episode, you'll hear how Elena's first experience with wine was at a 45,000-ton Bulgarian winery that employed 500 people, including her mom. When communism fell in 1990, an influx of foreigners, namely Australians, came to work at this winery for big supermarket brands. At the age of 12, Elena was interpreting at the winery after school, and a few years later she'd move to Adelaide to study winemaking. Elena was drawn not only to the winemaking side but the marketing of wine, as marketing wasn't exactly a thing in communist Bulgaria. She's a true entrepreneuer in every sense of the word, diving not only into the product, wine, but the sales, marketing, and philosophy of the product. Part one sets us up for part two, which delves into Elena's wines, the challenges and opportunities in Australia today, and which region Elena would classify as Grand Cru if Australia used the cru system. To begin, we have to go all the way back to Elena's childhood in Communist-era Bulgaria, when she remembers tasting her very first wine, a sparkling herb infused white wine… 00:29 Wine Culture in Bulgaria 01:32 Childhood Entrepreneurial Ventures 03:43 The Analytical Mind Behind Winemaking 06:27 Accidental Entry into the Wine World 15:36 Transition to Australia 18:44 Starting Dandelion Vineyards Hosted by Charlotte Alsaadi. When you look at a restaurant's wine list, what do you see? Do you see equity, cultural and biodiversity, representation, affordability, fun? Our guest today believes all of that should be front and center on a wine list. Miguel de Leon has made a career and a celebrated name for himself as a wine professional of color in New York City, where he is currently the wine director at Pinch Chinese in Manhattan. When he's not running the wine program at Pinch, he's writing thought-provoking articles for the online magazine Punch that aren't afraid to throw a punch at the status quo of the wine world. He's brave and outspoken and just what the mostly white wine world needs today. Today, we'll explore where the wine industry and wine culture stands now in terms of progress, or lack thereof, on diversity, accessibility, equality and inclusiveness. Miguel has stirred up controversy with his writings for Punch, including "It's Time to Decolonize Wine," and "So Long to the Sommelier." Miguel has a point and is an important voice in what could be an inflection point in how we approach, talk and communicate about wine. Is it time for wine speak to die? Are somms fading away? You don't want to miss our lively discussion with Miguel.

It's Monday, Let's raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It's time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let's begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today on the podcast, I enjoyed a riveting conversation with some of my wine friends. In 2023, there were a lot of winery buyouts. It seemed like another smaller brand was being gobbled up by the big players such as Gallo or Treasury. We questioned if this was a good thing or a bad thing. Plus, what would we do in that situation? Would we give up our brand and if so, what would be done with all that money?! If you listen to a lot of podcasts, you know that many ask for patreon. We do not plan on doing this, but we do ask you to support the podcast by leaving a review. It takes only a few seconds of your time but means so much to the show. Low-calorie wines see growth while the rest of the industry shrinks, glass bottles are getting slimmer and cleaner, dozens of new Criohl-ya grape varieties are discovered centuries after their ancestors arrived in South America, and Chardonnay, the low-rise jeans of the wine world, is hot once again, to the tune of $400 million. These are the stories we're following this week.

There can only be one explanation (maybe two) for someone to want, study, test and pass both the Master of Wine curriculm and the Master Sommelier curriculm. So rare it is that there are only 3 people in the world that have done it. One reason could be the pure academia of them; the study, the knowledge, the challenge to learn more. And another reason is the passion for wine. For David, it is a lot of both. He is clear, articulate and funny...and maybe a little crazy; after all this study and understanding of the wine industry, he goes off and starts a winery in Walla Walla Washington. Who does this? But you will here the commitment and passion it takes to do this very thing. Wine Talks is proud to have tracked him down in Washington as they are preparing for harvest. Have a listen....you will be inspired

In our latest Bonus episode, we sit down with Elle Rodriguez a native Los Angeleno wine influencer who goes by the Instagram handle @themodernpour. Anthony and Elle discuss their mutual love and appreciation of indie rock darling Jenny Lewis, pairing her 2019 album On the Line with a complex, aromatic and acidic bottle of Loire Valley Chenin Blanc by Francois Chidaine,. As a Mexican-American, Elle is unique in the wine world, representing women of color in a predominantly white (and blonde and female) subset of the wine related social media universe. Elle has worked long and hard to carve out a niche for other women of color to learn about wine and hopes to bring this experience to the next level through a branded wine club. Elle feels a real kinship with Jenny Lewis, as a fellow L.A. native, a fellow former actress, and an artist who blazed her own trail in the male dominated world of indie rock. Aubrey Terrazas is the Co-Found, Marketing Director, and Master Sommelier Candidate for the Palate Club. Her intro into the wine world began with her degree in French and as she waited tables alongside sommeliers. She continued her learning and worked as a sommelier for many years at the start of her career in wine.As an avid wine enthusiast and lover of learning, I have thought a lot about becoming a sommelier. Through my research, I found it to be a rigorous and intense process. Aubrey shared that there are many avenues into this field. To work in a restaurant as a sommelier there is no formal education or certification required. Many use their personal knowledge and experience. However, if you do choose to get a certification or even a master's certification, it is very intense because you have to learn about wine and grapes from all over the world. Palate Club was founded by Nicolas Mendiharat. He became a wine lover growing up in France and noticed a problem in choosing wine from the large variety found on shelves when he moved to the USA in 2015. Even having knowledge about wine, he found difficulty finding the wines he liked when there were so many labels in front of him. Palate Club was founded to help wine lovers find wines that match their taste, learn about wine, and discover new bottles from around the world. Sustainability Sourced in the wine world is really on-trend right now. People often find that wine labeled “Sustainable” can give less of a hangover, which makes sense because the word sustainable can mean so many things in the wine industry. Aubrey described sustainable as an umbrella term, starting all the way in the vineyard, from how they grow and treat their grapes all the way to packaging. In fact, more than 50% of a wine's carbon footprint comes from a bottle. As a woman in a very male-dominated industry, Aubrey shared some of what she sees and her advice for women in wine or other industries. Like many fields, as a young woman, it can be hard to get a job and be taken seriously. Aubrey says that the key to success is to work hard and stay authentic to who you are. She finds it important to put the focus on your power and your knowledge and not on using vanity to get ahead. I can say that being heavily involved in the social media world with Crystal Media, it can be easy to be distracted by vanity and compete in that way. However, if you're true to yourself, I truly believe you will get where you want to go in the way you want to get there. This was such a fun episode for me because as you know, I love wine! It was so fun to talk about wine and learn so much! I cannot wait to hopefully do a tasting with the Palate Club soon! What's Inside:What is the Palate Club? What it takes to be a sommelier.Sustainability in wine. The ins and outs of palates and the wine world.Women succeeding in a male-dominated industry.Mentioned In This Episode:Palate CLubPalate Club on InstagramAubrey Terrazas on LinkedInSan Diego Hat Co: EXCLUSIVE!! Visual and Performing artists come to the restaurant industry as "starving" artists who need supplemental income, yet a large percentage of them thrive & choose to stay.
In this Climate Talk we will approach this topic from a solutions perspective, rather than a controversial one. As the title suggests, it is not about glyphosate, but about building on possibilites of a wine world beyond it. We will explore how wine producers are and can phase out the use of chemical pesticides in different regions, as well as the benefits and the challenges encountered. We will explore different solutions and approaches, starting with nature-based ones and forward.
