More about today's guest: Since he ran away at the sound of gunfire at a soccer match and hid in an empty wine barrel Charlie Arturaola has been a wine lover. When he put his nose to the wood he smelled wine, the wine to become his life long passion. As a world-renowned sommelier, Charlie has one of the ten best palates in the world according to the American Wine Association. It's a rare gift and has served him well as he went from Santo Domingo to the Cunard Lines to Wine Director of the Boca Raton Resort and Club. Now Charlie is the president of Grappolo Blu, and speaks about, judges and assesses wine for clients around the globe. Sipping and spitting from New York to Napa, from Vienna to Beijing, Charlie informs, educates and entertains wine lovers in five languages, winning countless hearts and awards, including the Chevalier by the Ordre des Coteauz de Champagnes, and in 2012 the International Wine and Spirits Communicator of the Year. Charlie loves working with young people and mentored students of hospitality in the fine points of wine at Johnson & Wales University and Lynn University. He is also a member of the Society of Wine Educators, American Sommelier Association, Associazione dei Sommeglierie Italianne, and the American Society of Appraisers. He is on the board of directors for Toast to Humanity. Knowledgeable, convivial, and with a large following, Charlie was one of the founders and chairmen of the Mendoza Wine Festival. More about the Co-Moderator - Sheila Donohue VeroVino Founder, CEO, and Sommelier I'm a New Yorker living in Italy for 20 years. After becoming a sommelier and getting to know hundreds of smaller producers with great tasting authentic products, but mainly unknown in the US, I decided to start 'spreading the love' by importing in these hidden gems with the company I started, VeroVino, which sells to businesses and consumers across the US. Before starting his adventure as a wine producer, he studied and graduated in accounting. After a short time, he realized that that job is not for him and decided to change his life. Before embarking on the path that will lead him to the production of wines, he decides to go and work for a couple of years in some wineries in the area, including Domenico Clerico, to learn the "secrets" for producing excellent wines. Subsequently in 2004 he decided to start his own adventure and began to make wine from the grapes of his family business and to produce the typical wines of the area: dolcetto, barbera and nebbiolo. Today we are joined by our first winery guest of the season! Rhonda Wood began making wine in 1996, fast forward 21 years later, Wood Family Vineyards opened their doors here at Vasco Row in 2017. Wood Family specializes in bold reds and one hell of a good time. Operating one of the most well-known wineries in the region, we are joined by her son and Executive VP, Harrison Wood, to learn more about their journey. Harrison takes us through some of the small business highs and lows, and we have a great conversation about what has set them apart since inception. We get a moment to chat about Rhonda's great disposition for community and how it has helped them push the needle. And as always, we spend time talking about all things Livermore Valley hospitality. It was great to be joined by Harrison, and we can't wait for you to learn more about their story. In the glass, we drank newly bottled Cabernet Franc and their Big Wood Zinfandel - both were quite lovely and showed great! Check them out Wednesday through Sunday.
Welcome to Episode 1369 on Italian Wine Podcast, today on Masterclass US Wine Market With Juliana Colangelo she will be interviewing Gary Fisch. More about Gary: When Gary was working toward his B.S. from Rider College in political science, he didn't yet know where life would take him. Gary fell in love with wine in his senior year of college while working with his father, a liquor salesman, when he traveled to Louis Martini for a business trip. During the visit, Louis spent hours communicating his passion for the winemaking process to Gary. After that experience, Gary knew he wanted to become an expert, so he enrolled in the Sommelier Institute in New Jersey and at several of Windows on the World's wine courses. That enthusiasm and knowledge served him well when he teamed up with his brother Mark in 1987 and opened his first store in Madison, New Jersey. After years of expansion, Gary's now has several locations in New Jersey, as well as a flagship location in St. Helena, CA, right across the street from Louis Martini, where it all began for Gary. Gary and his wife, Liz, spend part of the year living in their house in St. Helena, so on any given day, you may run into Gary helping guests find the perfect wine. Gary's passion for customer service, wine, and retail is palpable, and can be felt walking through every one of his stores. Welcome to episode 1366, another episode of “On The Road Edition”, hosted by Stevie Kim. In this episode Stevie is at Villa Cavendri in Verona and she is talking with Vittorio Frescobaldi More about today's guest: Vittorio Frescobaldi is the Junior Export Manager - Benelux, Denmark, Italy at Crus et Domaines de France. He comes from a very famous Italian wine family, and he has a great interest in French strains, which is what he speaks about in his interview with Stevie! More about Frescobaldi: The name Frescobaldi has a tradition in the world of wine that dates back over 700 years and has since involved 30 generations. In the 60s of the last century, Vittorio Frescobaldi (Sr.), owner of the family properties together with his brothers Dino, Maria, Ferdinando and Leonardo, gave this tradition a modern organization by creating a winery with headquarters in Florence, nine properties in Tuscany and one in Friuli. It consists of over 890 hectares of vineyards, planted in very different soil and climatic conditions, from which 7 million high quality bottles are obtained every year. Difficult to make customers, admirers and journalists perceive such a varied reality. The Frescobaldi's succeeded by exhibiting the characteristic elements of their most important estates in a hall, and offering visitors a virtual journey through their biodiversity, using all five senses: smell and taste, in the first place, tasting the most significant wine, paired with gastronomic specialties of the area, and identifying one by one the perfumes in the essences that the oenologist of the estate made available. It was a game in which sight, touch and even hearing were also involved, with specially chosen pieces of music being listened to. An original way to get to know the ancient Frescobaldi properties, the Pomino Castle, the Castiglioni estate, the Nipozzano Castle, but also the more recent ones, Castelgiocondo, Montalcino, Santa Maria, in the Grosseto Maremma, Luce della Vite, born as a joint- venture with the Mondavi of Napa Valley and then fully acquired, and finally the Attems estate in the Gorizia Collio. Montesodi and Mormoreto come from the crus of Nipozzano, and Lamaione from those of Castelgiocondo: the SuperTuscans that have given the most satisfaction to the Frescobaldis. Today, the family winemaker, Lamberto Frescobaldi, takes care of its production and with him three other representatives of the latest generation already work in the company: Tiziana and Diana Frescobaldi and Stefano Benini. Welcome to Episode 1360 on Italian Wine Podcast, today on Masterclass US Wine Market With Juliana Colangelo she will be interviewing Matthew Kaner. More About today's guest: Fermented grape juice has allowed me to have a voice within an industry full of characters and strong personalities. I quite enjoy how things smell and taste. In fact, as a kid I wouldn't eat anything until I smelled it first. Now a 14+ year veteran of the wine world, my humble wine career began at the Wine Cask Wine Store in Santa Barbara, California where I also grew up. Moving to Los Angeles in 2006 brought an opportunity to work at Silverlake Wine, where I worked my way up from holiday help to the manager. In 2009, my close friend Dustin Lancaster came to him with an idea…”I want to open a wine bar and I'll only do it if you'll do it with me.” The only acceptable response: “you tell me when and where.” In July of 2010, Los Feliz's Bar Covell opened with a new spin on wine…ditch the traditional wine list and use your words. Bar Covell has a program of over 150 wines by the glass and the staff instead start a conversation/interaction with each guest to gage what they are in the mood for at that moment. This was just the beginning... I was graciously was named one of the Sommeliers of the Year by Food & Wine Magazine in 2013. In early 2015 with Lancaster and new partner David Gibbs, the trio opened Augustine Wine Bar in Sherman Oaks. Augustine has been named Best Wine Bar in American by Food & Wine Magazine and gets critical acclaim for its Vintage Collection of wines that it makes available by the glass and by the bottle on their in-house chalk boards nightly. In August of 2019 Wine Enthusiast Magazine named me to the 40 Under 40 Tastemakers list for 2019! Welcome to episode 1357, another episode of “On The Road Edition”, hosted by Stevie Kim. In this episode Stevie is in Cortina and is talking with Alessandro Torcoli More about today's guest: To what extent Alessandro Torcoli made his passion for wine a profession or was it his profession, that of a journalist, that made him passionate about wine, we cannot know. Instead, it is certain that he is one of the greatest connoisseurs of wine tourism in Italy. His curriculum is public and easily traceable on the web, therefore we will not retrace the stages of his brilliant career here. We at FisarMilano know and appreciate him not only for his professionalism but also for his great availability . During the very sad period of the lockdown he kept us company for an evening leading us by the hand to discover some wines that he presented and described to us with loving passion . On this occasion we were also able to experience the more human side of his character: an affable and very courteous person like him, he then entertained himself to answer some questions that were posed to him, placing his many years of study at our disposal . The firmness and certainty of his answers may have made one think of a certain arrogance, a bit like some people who consider themselves "arrived". For him, however, this is not the case: he recently got back into the game by participating as a "student" in the courses organized by the Institute of Masters of Wine , which can only be accessed after having taken a very difficult exam, aimed at testing the deepest knowledge of the world wine. And while he is taking part in this "course" he directs his magazine Civiltà del Bere which is based in Milan at the Enoluogo wine shop where he can also be met and consulted for some buying advice. On 17 February 2022 he will be a guest again at FisarMilano: on this occasion he will present his new book, Vinology – Tasting course , of which we only know that it is an infographic manual (like the previous Vinology, a visual guide to d' Italy and the world) to learn to taste and to identify the peculiarities of each vine through our senses. Welcome to Episode 1354 Stevie Kim moderates Clubhouse's Ambassadors Corner – In this episode Charlotte Ho interviews Sonia Spadaro Mulone. These sessions are recorded from Clubhouse and replayed here on the Italian Wine Podcast! Listen in on this series as Italian Wine Ambassadors all over the world chat with Stevie and their chosen wine producer. Which producer would you interview if you had your pick? More about the Co-Moderator - Charlotte Ho Charlotte's love for Italian wines was born during a trip to Tuscany in 2012. After that, she visited Italy every year, exploring different regions and their local food and wines. During Covid-19 — unable to travel, Charlotte decided to embark on a journey to systematically study and learn about Italian grapes and wines. With a background in Law and Economics (but not having studied wine...) she (boldly) enrolled in VIA's IWM course in 2021 and (miraculously) became a VIA IWA the following year. Apart from promoting Italian wines in Hong Kong through volunteering in events and tastings, Charlotte also started a social media account in 2021 dedicated to the sharing and spreading of knowledge and love for Italian wines. If you want to learn more you can by visiting: Instagram: @thosewinemoments About today's guest producer: Sonia Spadaro Mulone Sonia is the owner and CEO of Santa Maria La Nave., Sonia has transformed in few years a small family vineyard into a real jewel of Etnean viticulture and biodiversity. Despite the very limited quantities produced, Sonia's wines reach more than 20 countries in the World, are requested by some of the best restaurants and sophisticated collectors, and are appreciated by international critics (for instance Millesulmare 2016 has been included by Decanter in the list of the 50 Most Exciting Wines in the World). Sonia's mission is to protect Mount Etna's biodiversity and identify and work with ancient and almost extinct local grape varieties, while maintaining maximum respect to the Etna traditions, the environment and the local communities. Her work on ancient "reliquia" grape varieties is carried with the support of the University of Catania. Linked to her dedication to biodiversity, Sonia is also the co-founder of a company specialized in creating Sicilian Spirits with rare local ingredients. The first launch is Vulcanica, a Vodka obtained distilling ancient Sicilian grains. In 2020 Sonia has received the Simenza Award for her activity as Custodian of Sicilian and Etnean biodiversity. As an adult, she chose her own path, establishing a reputation for excellence in strategic marketing communications and brand and business development while working with a who's who of leading Internet and technology companies. Welcome to episode 1348, another episode of “On The Road Edition”, hosted by Stevie Kim. In this episode Stevie is speaking with Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini, a legendary lady of the Caparzo Winery. More about today's guest: Of Bolognese origins, but born and raised in Rome, Elisabetta does not come from a family of wine producers. Passionate about history, art and archaeology, however, she has always cultivated a passion for the countryside – her Bolognese ancestors cultivated peaches and maize – and, after working as a film producer in partnership with Luca Barbareschi, at the fateful 40 she finally fulfilled the dream of his life: to devote himself to the land by starting, almost by chance, to produce wine. The story begins in 1997 with the purchase of Borgo Scopeto in the Chianti Classico area , between Siena and Vagliagli . The Borgo, which today is a relais de charme called Borgo Scopeto Relais , is so spectacular that it was chosen by director Gary Winick to set part of his film "Letters to Juliet", starring Amanda Seyfried, Vanessa Redgrave and Franco Nero . The film, released in 2010 , surprisingly climbed the US charts : the presence, in a scene of the film, of Brunello Caparzo, positively influenced sales in the United States. But Borgo Scopeto is also a large farm that produces Chianti Classico and an excellent extra virgin olive oil . Wine is really about history. What other product do you deliberately wit 20 years to explore, what other product can you take half way around the world and say “This is who we are and when we are” I was thinking about the phrase after my conversation with Kira and with picture perfect recollection of wine history, the saying needs to be “This is who were and when we were before that.” Meaning, the history of the culture if wine rolls up to secure a place in the next bottling. For Kira, her vast knowledge of the history of wine has created a mindset with making wine that, in my opinion, is reflected in her wines. I think you will find the conversation stimulating, fascinating, and inspiring.

I think my love for wine increased when I attended Vinitaly for the first time when I was 17. I saw a beautiful world full of business, appointments , tastings, flavors. So I became a winemaker and I still learn a lot every day from my father, who is a winemaker as well. Since I work in my family-owned winery, of course I don't operate just in the cellar and in the vineyards, but I manage the winery tours and tasting, and I take care of our foreign customers. I think it is the heterogeneity of this world that makes me love the wine industry. Understanding Italian wines takes study and patience. With over 2000 wine grape varieties in the country, it is hard to sort them out. When you break down the country, there is a bit more clarity with grape varieties but little local varieties will confuse you. Umbria, just south of Tuscany, follows suit. Unlike its northern neighbor, it does not grow Sangiovese as the mainstay red grape but grows Sagrantino instead. Valentino Valentina will sort it all out for you.
There is so much to know and understand about the wine diversity just between the two islands, let alone the wine diversity among each island, that New Zealand is recognized with exemplary wines. Simone Kelly stopped in for a conversation and helps us get the lay of the land as we start in the North and work our way down. The Seresin wines are firm in structure and give great insight into where they are grown. Have a listen.
