The Album: The Bacao Rhythm and Steel Band: The Serpent's Mouth (2018) Steel pan/drum music emerged out of Trinidad and Tobago over the course of the 1950s. Its tinny yet melodious timbre was unique and it soon became a signature style within the diverse soundscape of Afro-Caribbean music. The tourism industry compelled steel drum bands to adapt pop hits into their repertoire and by the late '60s and early '70s, it was common to hear soul and funk tunes being given a steel pan makeover. Even Morgan's stepfather, Bob Sharpe, got in the action as part of the Salt N' Pepper Steel Band, whose lone album includes covers of the Jackson 5 and Johnny Nash (and Oklahoma too!).  The Bacao Rhythm and Steel Band, formed by Germany's Bjorn Wagner after a few years living in Trinidad & Tobago, is directly influenced by that earlier era. Across their two albums, 55 (2016) and last year's The Serpent's Mouth, Bacao tackle any number of surprising hits, many of them drawn from hip-hop as well as soul/funk, plus their own original compositions. If you ever wanted to hear Gang Starr deep cuts get the steel pan makeover, you came to the right place.  The Serpent's Mouth was the album pick of DJ Garth Trinidad, whose been a radio fixture in Los Angeles since the mid-90s, when he first started at  KCRW and rose to fame on his weeknight Chocolate City show. This week I'm excited to welcome L.A. based DJ Aaron Byrd to the Downward Facing Spiritual Spiral Podcast. Aaron is a well known DJ on KCRW which is one of the most influential and well regarded radio stations in the world. We'll start off the interview by talking about KCRW and what makes the station such a unique and special place to be a part of. He'll share the story on how he ended up working at KCRW and how Garth Trinidad played such a pivotal role in his evolution as a DJ. Aaron is originally from Los Angeles and we end up touching on a multitude of topics including the L.A. culture, stories about the history of the city as well as music, DJing, racism and social issues affecting our society. Vice is the type of dude to make everything seem easy. His DJ mixes sound effortless, jumping between genres as if they didn’t even exist; he’s a natural interviewer on his YouTube show, Electric Taco; and he seems to slide from business to business (music production, sneaker shop owner, to name a couple) with style and grace. Turns out Vice works really hard to develop his skills, and he matches them with a confidence that he describes as humble bragging, but doesn’t sound like bragging at all when it comes from him. From he outside, it just seems like he’s good at stuff and he isn’t afraid to admit that to himself or to you. After years on the air at Power 106, Vice turned all of that skill, inspiration, and connection into a multi-faceted global business. He tells us how he’s been able to do that, and what he’s learned from folks like Kanye West and Justin Timberlake.
