Born in New York, some of his earliest musical influences included his mother's love for soca music and the distinct Caribbean rhythms of his culture. An appreciation of Jazz would be further guided by his father's expanding audiophile home system. Moving to Detroit in 1980, the start of the decade where Techno would take formation, put him at the center of music history while simultaneously working at the now famed nightclub “The Music Institute”Relocating to Atlanta to attend Morehouse College, he took it upon himself to bring more of the authentic House and Techno flavor to his new home, playing at numerous clubs and bars in the metro area. Eventually this led to DEEP, his aptly-named, game changing decade long Saturday night residency at local club MJQ, where he would bring guests such as King Britt, Steve “Silk” Hurley, Peven Everett, Kerri Chandler, Phil Asher and Joe Claussell. It is during the 2000s that Kai really sets his stride. 2002 saw the release of his first production, ‘The Kaizer EP', on Brett Dancer's seminal deep house label Track Mode. After a few releases on other labels such as Moodymann's Mahogani Music, Deep Explorer & Real Soon. A few years later he would co-found the Labor Day weekend outdoor event House In The Park with DJ Ramon Rawsoul which now has over 15,000 attendees.2008 saw the creation of his label NDATL and the first edition of his annual Deep Detroit. NDATL stands for the cities that have played a role in his musical development: New York, Detroit, ATLanta. Which is home to many of his own productions and A List producers such as Larry Heard, Mr. G, Theo Parrish & Mike Huckaby to name a few.e has recently curated the boutique Kai Alcé Eyewear line. “The Kaizer” never stops moving. A love of life, mixed with his flair for originality, willingness to experiment and devotion to the dancefloor has cemented his place as a pillar in American dance music history. Whatever comes next from Mr. Alcé, you can be assured that it will be classy, soulful, fulfilling and funky. www.ndatl.comRecorded on April 7, 2025 in Brooklyn, NY.

July 20, 2024, marks 10 years since Cork venue the Pavilion, run by Pat Conway, Stevie G and Joe Kelly, closed its doors. It left an indelible mark on me and so many music lovers. Friendships were formed there, ideas were hatched, bands were watched, and DJs filled the floors. On this episode of the TPOE podcast, a whole host of the people who loved the Pav recall the six years when the recession took hold of Ireland and the Pavilion opened its doors. The first gig was Evan Dando and the Lemonheads in April 2008. The following year, Kanye West and the xx both graced its stage and the Pav was up and running. Theo Parrish, King Britt, the Pharcyde, Roy Ayers, Floating Points, Franz Ferdinand Eddie Reader, Lee Fields, Candi Staton, NASA, Theesatisfaction, Shabazz Palaces, Sly and Robbie, Lonnie Liston Smith, and Rakim are just some of the big international acts who played the Pav in that time. It also hosted and supported so many Irish acts, from Altered Hours to Hozier, Saint Yorda to Gilla Band. There were club nights like Go Deep, Sunday Times and Floating Joints which called the Pav home over the years. We hear about all of these and more over the course of this episode charting one of the best venues the country has ever seen. Kyra Knox and Lady Alma are two dope ladies using their voices in different ways. Kyra is using her directing voice to make sure Philly's basketball courts stay safe. Her passion for the arts created a project that Philly needs: the documentary Bad Things Happen in Philadelphia. The documentary discusses the impact of gun violence in city and highlights the non-profits working hard to create change. Lady Alma has been a legendary force in house music for decades. Around the world she IS the queen of house. She has made significant contributions to Philadelphia's vibrant music scene with her uplifting anthems. Juneteenth, 2022. Last year's mix was fun, but this time, I wanted to bring some attention to the people who bring us these amazing performances, ideas that eventually became hits, even if only in the most underground of spaces. This mix features House and Techno legends like King Britt, DJ Dozia, Carl Cox, Kerry Chandler, Todd Terry, Mike Huckaby, Idris Elba, and Green Velvet. Along with singers like Whitney Houston, Martha Wash, Jocelyn Brown, Rainie Lassiter, and Billy Porter. These people inspired the likes of The Funkboys, Komanche and myself to continue to move the music forward. Happy Juneteenth, Pride, and Black Music Month. Enjoy!

Titres joués extraits de l'album José Louis and the Paradox of Love - Church - Coupé - Papa Wemba voir le clip - No No No - Sahara + bonus voir le clip Kilimanjaro. Réalisation : Laurie Plisson.

"I never, ever did anything unless it was me, sounded like me, looked like me..." -Ursula Rucker Chatting with the incomparable @urucker about her work, life, and working together at UW-Madison. Ursula Rucker is an interdisciplinary poet, performer, and recording artist whose work reflects on personal history, family, and place. She characterizes her work as situated “along the edge of the terrains of poetry.” Rucker has released five albums and collaborated with a wide range of artists outside of the field of poetry, including The Roots, musicians and Pew Fellows Jamaaladeen Tacuma and King Britt, and, most recently, Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Clarence Williams III. She has toured with her live performance memoir, My Father's Daughter, which she describes as “90 minutes of self-truth and discovery.” In 2017, she collaborated with Nigerian sound and installation artist Emeka Ogboh to create Logan Squared: Ode to Philly, which featured an epic poem by Rucker that reflected Philadelphians' voices and visions for the city. The work was presented as part of Mural Arts Philadelphia's Center-supported, citywide Monument Lab exhibition. A Philly 360 Creative Ambassador and recipient of Leeway Foundation's Transformation Award, Rucker is the subject of the 2008 documentary Ursula Rucker: Poet, directed by Michael J. “Everyone whose listening… go off the grid!”Sage advice from this weeks guest on Lost and Sound - musical polymath King Britt, beaming in from San Diego. Right now, he’s taken a lifetime in DJing, producing, remixing and just being an all round presence in electronic music’s evolution into the realms of education. We had a chat about whitewashing in electronic music and the need to have access to the lesser documented history.Along the way we took in his roots from 5 year old King DJing at his Dad’s barber shop in Philly, the legendary Silk City in Philadelphia, forming partnerships with Josh Wink and Digable Planets, about his university course Blacktronica: Afrofuturism in Electronic Music - researching and honouring the people of colour, who've pioneered groundbreaking genres within the electronic music and even taking a trip into the future. His advice for future music? Go off the grid! What does that mean? You’ll have to listen to find out. Enjoy! If you’re listening the week this episode comes out and want to get involved, check out Blacktronika presents Sound for Humanity, a series of performances by six music creative artists, who were asked to think about sound, not only in its sonic definition (noun) but sound as an adjective (sound mind) and verb (sound the alarm), and how their choices will contribute in some way to humanity. Composer/performer https://benneill.com (Ben Neill) is the inventor of the Mutantrumpet, a hybrid electro-acoustic instrument, and is widely recognized as a musical innovator through his recordings, performances and installations. Neill’s music blends influences from electronic, jazz, and minimalist music, blurring the lines between digital media and acoustic instrument performance. Neill has recorded eleven albums of his music on labels including Universal/Verve, Thirsty Ear, Astralwerks, and Six Degrees. Currently he is an Artist in Residence at Nokia Bell Labs where he is exploring new modes of emotion transfer and communication between people using music, visual media, and hybrid instruments. Performances include BAM Next Wave Festival, Big Ears Festival, Lincoln Center, Whitney Museum of American Art, Bing Concert Hall at Stanford, Getty Museum, Cite de la Musique Paris, Moogfest, Spoleto Festival, Umbria Jazz, Bang On A Can Festival, ICA London, Istanbul Jazz Festival, Vienna Jazz Festival, and the Edinburgh Festival, among many others. Neill has worked closely with many musical innovators including La Monte Young, John Cage, John Cale, Pauline Oliveros, Rhys Chatham, DJ Spooky, David Berhman, Mimi Goese, King Britt, and Nicolas Collins. Neill also leads concerts of La Monte Young’s The Second Dream of the High Tension Stepdown Line Transformer with an international brass ensemble; performances have recently been presented in New York, Amsterdam, Paris, Amsterdam, Huddersfield, Den Bosch, Oslo, Krems, Koln, Los Angeles, and Warsaw. Neill began developing the Mutantrumpet in the early 1980s. Initially an acoustic instrument (a combination of 3 trumpets and a trombone combined into one), he collaborated with synthesizer Robert Moog to integrate electronics. In 1992, while in residency at the STEIM research and development lab for new instruments in Amsterdam, Neill made the mutantrumpet fully computer interactive. In 2008 he created a new version of his instrument at STEIM, and returned there in 2016-17 to design Version 4.0 which made its debut 2019. See a more detailed history of the instrument https://benneill.com/portfolio/mutantrumpethistory/ (here). Other current projects include a collaboration with vocalist/composer Mimi Goese that explores the musical and poetic qualities of mathematics and science through collaborations with chaos mathematician Ralph Abraham and the Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries. The new songs combine the interplay of Goese’s captivating vocals and the electroacoustic explorations of Neill’s self-designed mutantrumpet with sounds created from fractal mathematics and Hudson River environmental data. A native of North Carolina, Neill holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from Manhattan School of Music. He studied composition with La Monte Young and was also mentored by composer/performer Jon Hassell in the early 1980’s. Since 2008 he has been a music professor at Ramapo College of New Jersey. BEN NEILL PRESS QUOTES “Ben Neill is using a schizophrenic trumpet to create art music for the people.” Wired Magazine “Ben Neill performs the Mutantrumpet, a super-instrument of his own design that he also uses to control lights and other elements in the show. The music is a dense, continously-shifting tapestry of electronic beats.” Wired Magazine “The avant-garde and EDM come together in music by Ben Neill & his mutantrumpet.” WNYC New Sounds/John Schaefer “A creative composer, genius performer, and inventor of the mutantrumpet.” Time Out NY “Ben Neill...

Tanto Tempo fue incluido en el libro 1001 Records You Must Hear Before You Die, de Robert Dimery.
