Indian hospitality, the soft heart of a mother, and the Dog-Man of Tompkins Square Park all intersect in this powerful exploration of yoga. Drawing from the Maha Upanishad and the insight of Albert Schweitzer, Raghunath and Kaustubha unpack a central bhakti truth: that genuine love of God expresses itself as compassion for all living beings—not just the ones who vote like you, think like you, or smell like you. At the heart of this episode is the unforgettable tale of King Rantideva from the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam—a king whose radical acts of generosity and deep spiritual faith push us to reconsider what it really means to live a spiritual life.

With his new graphic novel, NAKED CITY (Dark Horse Books), artist/activist Eric Drooker finishes the New York trilogy begun in Flood! and Blood Song. We talk about how Naked City started with the image of a beleaguered squeegee-man and wound up a love letter to New York and especially Tompkins Square Park, the challenges of using word/thought balloons and captions after making wordless comics for so long, and the importance of staying handmade in the digital era. We get into his upbringing in Stuy Town and the Lower East Side/Loisaida, why we were recording in an apartment above the Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space, how New York changed during his life, why he semi sorta escaped from the city, what it's like being a quality-of-life criminal, and the time he made his start with stencil-graffiti only to get over-tagged by Basquiat. We also discuss his artistic & political awakenings, the Tompkins Square Park riot and police militarization, his ambivalence about street art going into the gallery, the importance of on-the-ground activism (MOAR STREET POSTERS), the surveillance panopticon, and more. Full version of the episode on Patreon. Labor Skate Shop for Living Proof Radio. Opened in 2012 by James Rewolinski, Labor was founded to serve as a core skate shop for New York City. Before the rise of mainstream media and the explosion of skateboarding into the global spotlight, skate shops were the center of the skateboarding community. They weren't just retail spaces but epicenters of culture where people went to immerse themselves. Preceding Labor, Autumn Skate Shop, which opened in the early 2000s and closed in 2008, was one of the pioneering shops in the city. Located near Tompkins Square Park, it played a key role in nurturing the local scene, serving as the go-to shop in the area. Autumn created a community around New York's skateboarding culture at a time when the city lacked these locations and commercialized skateboarding had not yet taken over. The closure of Autumn Skate Shop in 2008 left a void in the Manhattan skate scene. Labor Skate Shop stepped in just a few years later to fill that gap, continuing the legacy of community-focused, independent skate shops that prioritize local talent and the spirit of skateboarding. In a way, Labor is the torchbearer for what Autumn Skateshop represented—a space for skaters to gather, share ideas, and push the scene forward in an otherwise commercialized urban landscape. Labor has played a critical role in shaping the identity of New York City's skateboarding and while there Brooklyn location has recently closed, the doors of their Manhattan shop remain open. http://patreon.com/livingproofnewyorkhttp://livingproofnewyork.com

Then he began the mantra – Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare / Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare. They responded, too low and muddled at first, but he returned it to them again, singing it right and triumphant. Again they responded, gaining heart, ringing karatālas and clapping hands – one … two … three, one … two … three. Again he sang it alone, and they stayed, hanging closely on each word, clapping, beating cymbals, and watching him looking back at them from his inner concentration – his old-age wisdom, his bhakti – and out of love for Swamiji, they broke loose from their surroundings and joined him as a chanting congregation. Swamiji played his small drum, holding its strap in his left hand, bracing the drum against his body, and with his right hand playing intricate mṛdaṅga rhythms. Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare / Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare. He was going strong after half an hour, repeating the mantra, carrying them with him as interested onlookers gathered in greater numbers. A few hippies sat down on the edge of the rug, copying the cross-legged sitting posture, listening, clapping, trying the chanting, and the small inner circle of Prabhupāda and his followers grew, as gradually more people joined. This is the 4pm All Local update for September 9, 2023
This episode on the history of Tompkins Square Park ties right into an all-new two-part episode coming in September, the first part coming at you next week. Tompkins Square Park is the heart and soul of the East Village. And it's also one of New York City's oldest parks! However this was not a park designed for the service of the upper classes in the mid-19th century. It provided open air and recreational space for the many hundreds of thousands of immigrants who moved into the Lower East Side, particularly Germans who filled the park with music, food and social gatherings. But the park has also been a place for people to voice their descent. It's become a most rebellious place over the decades. This is a story of vice presidents and labor unions and drag queens and punks.Visit the website for more informationThis show was originally released in 2014.
It's Friday, June 30th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus U.S. Supreme Court affirms religious liberty The Supreme Court broadened religious accommodations in the workplace in a unanimous ruling Thursday, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Gerald Groff, an evangelical Christian man and former U.S. Postal Service employee, quit his job and sued the USPS on grounds of religious discrimination after it began requiring him to work on Sundays. After the Supreme Court made the ruling, he said, “I hope this decision allows others to be able to maintain their convictions without living in fear of losing their jobs because of what they believe.” Exodus 20:8 says, “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.” The Court ruled that employers must “reasonably accommodate” workers' religions. Historically, the United States Postal Service had not delivered on Sundays. It was only after Amazon contracted with them to deliver their packages that Groff was told he had to work every day of the week. Supreme Court guts affirmative action admission policies In another major case, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the affirmative action admission policies of Harvard and the University of North Carolina, which gave weight to a prospective student's race, are unconstitutional, reports CNBC. The court's majority opinion said that the schools' affirmative action programs “unavoidably employ race in a negative manner, involve racial stereotyping, and lack meaningful end points.” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that the universities' policies violated the equal protection clause of the Constitution's 14th Amendment. The clause bars states from denying people equal protection under the law. And Justice Clarence Thomas, a Black conservative who wrote a concurring opinion, said that the schools' affirmative action admissions policies “fly In the face of our colorblind Constitution.” Female Lutheran pastor: God is “nonbinary” and Jesus had “two dads” A video of a female Lutheran pastor in Minnesota has gone viral for leading her congregation in a “sparkle creed” prayer in honor of sexual perversion pride month in which she described God as “nonbinary” and Christ Jesus as having “two dads,” reports The Christian Post. Anna Helgen, co-pastor of Edina Community Lutheran Church in the suburb of Minneapolis, delivered the prayer during a Sunday service live stream on June 25th. 2 Timothy 4:3 says, “For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.” Sue's abortion In 1981, at the age of 21, Sue Liebel had an abortion. Other than her friend, who drove her to and from Planned Parenthood 90 minutes from her Indianapolis home, she didn't tell another soul for 30 years! In her interview with me as I guest host today on Generations Radio, she describes what was going through her mind as she walked up the steps of that Indiana abortion mill and the sound of that suction machine that haunts her to this day. I asked her how she felt afterwards. McMANUS: “What was going through your mind? Did you feel relief? Did you feel anxious? Did you feel heart broken?” LIEBEL: “Heart broken. I felt awful. They kept me out of the private room then and had me recover in a room that had probably six or eight La-Z-Boys with other girls who were recovering. They gave us a cold drink and some crackers. And they were checking us in terms of our bleeding, blood pressure, what have you. “We were all sitting there in like a circle in these, I want to say, Navy plush, you know, 1970s La-Z-Boy recliners. And nobody said a word. We didn't even look at each other. You know what I mean? Everyone was looking down. It was a … it was a shameful moment, for all of us, I believe. Certainly for me.” To hear my entire 38-minute interview with Sue Liebel about her abortion and the healing she experienced through Jesus Christ, go to Generations.org/radio. Transgender activists chant: “We're coming for your children!” Last Friday night, homosexual transgender activists marching in New York City's annual drag queen parade chanted: "We're here, we're queer, we're coming for your children,” reports The Blaze. Listen. ACTIVISTS: “We're here, we're queer, we're coming for your children! We're here, we're queer, we're coming for your children!" Hundreds of LHBTQ advocates paraded from Tompkins Square Park to the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village on Friday night during the annual New York City drag march. The parade commemorated the Stonewall Riots of 1969, when there was a protest at the Stonewall Inn, a homosexual bar. Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk said, "When they tell you who they are, believe them." Matthew 18:6 says, “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in Me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” Only 39% of Americans extremely proud to be American And finally, Gallup Polling asked Americans this question: “How proud are you to be an American -- extremely proud, very proud, moderately proud, only a little proud, or not at all proud?” Now, when Gallup first asked this question in January 2001, 55% of U.S. adults were extremely proud to be American. Not surprisingly, pride intensified after 9/11, with extreme pride ranging from 65% to 70% between 2002 and 2004. However, since 2005, the percentage of Americans expressing extreme pride declined, but it remained at the majority level through 2017. Since 2018, extreme pride has consistently been below that, averaging 42%. Today, only 39% of American adults are “extremely proud” to be American. LGBTQ activists participating in New York City's annual Drag March on Friday sparked outrage for chanting “we're here, we're queer, we're coming for your children” in a Manhattan park. The marchers, many wearing flamboyant dresses and clothing, walked through Tompkins Square Park in the East Village Friday night as part of the city's Pride Month celebrations. What was all that about? Oh nothing, just the Pride Movement announcing their plans to groom and recruit your kids. On this episode of the NTEB Prophecy News Podcast, we've reached the last week of Pride Month 2023, and it's going out with a bang. In New York, Pride marchers there were kind enough to validate something we have long warned about here at NTEB, that the Pride Movement needs to groom and recruit children into to stay alive and thrive. NTEB has warned you for over a decade that this was the Pride Plan, to groom and recruit your children, and at the very least you can take comfort in hearing them admit it here in 2023. All this and more on the Prophecy News Podcast.

Today's iMMERSE podcast is even more unusual than many of the others. I interviewed Elke and Peter Schumann in February of 2020 in their Glover, Vermont home along with Jay Walbert, the archivist for my Archive in nearby Barton, Vermont. The octagenarian Schumanns immigrated from Germany to New York in 1961 and have led the Bread and Puppet Theater since 1963. In this podcast, they share their history and artistic politics and bread. As Peter says here: We went around and gave them pieces of bread to eat and found they were a better audience when they were chewing – we liked them better…" In the beginning of our chat, Peter turns to Elke and says, "When I don't remember something, you will". "I will" she says. This happy conversation is ever so dear to me because Elke passed away on August 1, 2021. I first met Peter in New York in the 1970s through public events maker, Karin Bacon. I first came to the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont in 1968 to work with Fluxus artists Dick Higgins and Alison Knowles. In the years that followed, I bought some land from them and built a house there in the 1990, the house where I now live and am recording this introduction. Since 1990, my relationship with Bread and Puppet and the Schumann in the neighboring town of Glover continued to grow. The Bread and Puppet Theater engages people, after filling them with hand-milled sourdough bread. They work environmentally and for many decades now, they've been making amazing use of the landscape, natural light changes and natural acoustics. Puppets from tiny to gigantic, signs, banners and hand-made art have always animated their events. Their roadside museum is filled with decades worth of their fanciful performance objects from their local, national and international pageants. The tradition of handing-out bread always guarantees good spirits and an enthusiastic audience ready to be entertained by the humor, irony, politics, pageantry and their deep concerns for humanity. But let's just let them tell their own story. Topics covered in podcast John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Claes Oldenberg, anti-Vietnam war protests, Judson Church, Living Theatre, Red Grooms, Stefan Brecht, Tompkins Square Park, Lower Eastside, Daily street muggings of the Bread & Puppet performers, street performances, Grace Paley, volunteerism, Burning Man, War Resisters League, Strike for Peace, Vermont, Barton, Glover, Northeast Kingdom, Socialist pageants, searching for clay, puppet historian, John Bell, Alison Knowles, Dick Higgins, Earth People Park, Burke, pianist Karl Schwartz, Sheffield, baking rye bread, summer Bread & Puppet performances in Vermont, homemade clay bread oven, May Day, Pageant Park, Crystal Lake, Peter Schumann's sculptures, the Bread & Puppet Museum, Sheffield River clay wall, The Charlie Morrow Archive ... Samples playlist: Insurrection Oratorio • Charlie Morrow / Strange Circus • Lee Volfoni / Carnival Of Souls • Verne Langdons / Wonder Bread Commercial 1950s / Bread and Puppet Theater 2021 • Tetsuro Hoshii / Brother Bread Sister Puppet • Grace Paley / Grosse Fuge • Charlie Morrow / Fellini's Circus • Daniele Benati / Kiddie Land • Prelude to a Nightmare
Saturday, August 6th, 1988 was a hot summer night at Tompkins Square Park on the Lower East Side. Unwitting pedestrians made their way home from restaurants or on their way to local bars to beat the debilitating humidity that kept the temperature above 90F even at night. When hundreds of NYPD officers falsely called to the park by a confused and scared former police captain who was left without supervision by top cops who had left the scene to use the bathroom. The resulting "police riot" as it was called in the media led to more than 120 injuries among mostly residents if neighborhood. No officers were punished despite a scathing report. It was one of the first cases of citizen journalist video coverage to document police brutality years before the famous Rodney King incident. This tape was created by Paul DeRienzo

The time was 1989. The place, New York. Daniel Rakowitz was a twenty-something mentally unstable homeless man. He spent his days selling weed with his rooster and spent his nights sleeping in Tompkins Square Park, until a couple living near by took him in. As many roommate situations go, the living arrangements didn't take long to sour. With the fear of being homeless again lingering over his head, Daniel finds another roommate. This is when Daniel and Monika find each other. He was in his feelings for her, while she just needed another place to stay. This made for a volatile living situation, which resulted in multiple stories and even more rumors as to what really happened to Monika. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Daniel Rakowitz was an aspiring cult leader turned murderer and cannibal. In 1989, Rakowitz walked around Tompkins Square Park bragging that he had killed his roommate, Monica Beerle, a Swiss dancer and student. He said that he killed her and had boiled her head and made soup from her brain. He had tasted it and liked it, and thereafter decided to also feed it to the homeless. Talk about the sounds of silence! A black & white movie with almost no dialogue? Made in 1989 and not 1929? About a homeless guy taking care of a baby? And it's a comedy? What is this madness?
