STARK REALITY PLAYLISTS with James Dier aka $mall ¢hange and Guests
For Episode 76 of STARK REALITY PLAYLISTS, guest NANCY YAHIRO gives us a slamming playlist of Northern Soul, RnB, Funk, a little Hip Hop too, featuring tracks by Grady Tate, Edwin Starr, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Clarence Carter, Gangstarr and much more. She has very deep crates as to be expected after digging and DJing for so many years. For full track listing go to the STARK REALITY Episode 76 page on jasoncharles.net MUSIC Channel and click "See Playlist." Northern Spain-based selector and 45 digger Nancy Yahiro is a native of Southern California and first started DJing punk and soul at her college’s radio station (KUCI) in 1985. She became increasingly obsessed with soul 45s and started selling duplicates and becoming a record dealer. In 1997 Nancy started the Golden State Soul Society with Cid Hernandez and continued running it with Gabby Beeby until she moved to Italy. In Italy, Nancy started the Rimini Rare Soul Weekender and lived there for 11 years, DJed all over the country. She has also played records in the US, Argentina, UK, Germany, Spain, Sweden, etc etc. To hear Nancy's exclusive in-depth STARK REALITY Interview with Host James Dier aka $mall ¢hange, where she goes deep into her lifetime of 45 collecting and deejaying, her political activism on Israel, the apathy of the world and much more, go to Episode 75 of STARK REALITY on jasoncharles.net MUSIC Channel, or wherever you get your podcasts. When discussing movie soundtracks in hip-hop, very rarely do you hear about this weeks topic - the original motion picture Trespass soundtrack, released in 1992. While the movie is forgettable, the soundtrack is packed with a great line up of artists, from Ice-T and Ice Cube to Public Enemy and Gang Starr just to name a few, making this a somewhat diamond in the rough and great listen for hip-hop lovers. https://www.tiktok.com/@brandonhetzel996?_t=ZT-8vVI9vIQ22w&_r=1 https://www.instagram.com/str8_the_clippa?igsh=cTBzNnFhenRkN3Nl&utm_source=qr https://www.facebook.com/share/169kiVJpWu/?mibextid=wwXIfr

In 1994, Gang Starr released one of their most celebrated albums. It's still regarded as one of the very best albums of what was arguably the greatest year in the history of rap music. At the time the cassette was the format of choice and that would allow around an hour of audio and most artists were more than happy to fill that up. You've heard the saying 'do more with less' but in this instance we want to do less with more. Once again we try to edit down a beloved album to fit the single disc LP format. It's our last new music mix of 2024! This episode is filled with personal anecdotes, such as Samer's marathon triumph soundtracked by the soulful "Like a Prayer," and Matt's unexpected joy in the fusion of Dwight Yoakam's classic twang with Post Malone's genre-bending flair. Explore the thrilling energy of emerging talents and nostalgic sounds as we spotlight artists who deserve more recognition. Ashley Kutcher's witty lyrics and fresh approach to country music have us cheering for her, while Alessia Cara's latest single teases an introspective journey into her upcoming album. Our musical journey also takes us to the comforting holiday sounds of Ben Folds and a refreshing throwback to the '90s with Gang Starr, celebrating both the new and the familiar in music. Finally, we dive into the creative worlds of hip-hop and cult cinema, exploring the visionary concept album from Lin-Manuel Miranda and Aisa Davis inspired by "The Warriors." Imagining this narrative reimagined through an all-female gang's perspective across New York City gives us chills, and we can't wait to share our thoughts on its potential as a large-scale musical. On this flashback of Take It Personal Radio, we're hitting you with a remastered version of episode 50, our Hieroglyphics Tribute. This was a mammoth one. We've got special guests Slug, Murs, Apathy, J-Zone, The Grouch & Breakbeat Lou stopping by. We interview Del, Domino, Casual & Tajai and they've got stories for days! Del talks about doing shrooms with Q-Tip to Casual freestyling with Pharoahe Monch at the Gavin. We touch on Casual vs. Saafir and the impact it had on battle rap. We unfortunately find out Ice Cube wasn't a fan of Gang Starr and thought Kool Keith was too weird. Del explains what it was like not only being cousins with Ice Cube, but their musical similarities and his involvement earlier on in his career. We learn about Del's feelings towards the Gorillaz, while Domino breaks down just about every Hiero collaboration imaginable. We talk I Wish My Brother George Was Here, '93 Til Infinity, No Need For Alarm, Fear Itself, Like It Should Be and No Man's Land. We discuss their rap dominance prior to being dropped by the label. Tajai's breaks down his feelings towards the group's sophomore album and the importance of each album sounding different. This episode can be a slow burn or a fast one, but we all know Hiero is til infinity! www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal

In this episode of Seeing Them Live, host Charles welcomes Scott Patrick Weiner, an artist and lifelong skateboarder who currently teaches art at Hanselton Middle School in Massachusetts. The conversation kicks off with Scott reminiscing about his first concert experience in 1991 at the Walter Brown Arena, where he saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers with opening acts Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins. Scott recounts the electrifying atmosphere and the impact that punk rock had on his life following his discovery of skateboarding in 1988.The episode delves into Scott's diverse music tastes, ranging from hip hop to industrial, and his favorite bands like Sonic Youth and the Dead Kennedys. He shares insightful stories about attending Lollapalooza in 1992 and how Ministry's intense performance left a lasting impression. Scott also talks about the local hardcore scene in Boston during the early 90s, highlighting shows by bands like Chillmark that gave him a sense of community. A particularly touching moment comes when Scott describes taking his daughter to her first concert to see Wussy, a band whose songs he used to sing to her as lullabies. This episode is a nostalgic journey through Scott's vibrant musical history, marked by memorable concerts and the unifying power of music.BANDS: A Tribe Called Quest, Beastie Boys, Beastie Boys, Bob Dylan, Burn, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, Descendants, Dinosaur Jr., Dirty Rotten Imbeciles, Gang Starr, Heroin, Ian Mackaye, Ice Cube, Jane's Addiction, Jello Biafra, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Kingpin, Lou Barlow, Lush, Megadeth, Metallica, Ministry, Mogwai, Nirvana, Palehead, Pearl Jam, Public Enemy, Red Hot Chili Peppers, REM, Ritchie Havens, Run D.M.C., Said and Done, Sebadoh, Sex Pistols, Sick of It All, Slayer, Smashing Pumpkins, Smiths, Sonic Youth, Suicidal Tendencies, The Alcoholics, The Cure, The Goats, The Pharcyde, The Smiths, The Who, Tribe, U2, Wrecking CrewVENUES: 930 Club, Aragon Ballroom, First Baptist Church, Great Woods, Lollapalooza, Middle East, Smith College, The Rathskeller, Walter Brown Arena, Woods Hole PATREON:https://www.patreon.com/SeeingThemLivePlease help us defer the cost of producing this podcast by making a donation on Patreon.WEBSITE:https://seeingthemlive.com/Visit the Seeing Them Live website for bonus materials including the show blog, resource links for concert buffs, photos, materials related to our episodes, and our Ticket Stub Museum.INSTAGRAM:https://www.instagram.com/seeingthemlive/FACEBOOK:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550090670708
On this flashback of Take It Personal Radio, we're hitting you with our DJ Premier interview. We had Preemo on the show early on when we did our Prodigy tribute, but he returned to the show to discuss the latest Gang Starr album. We talk plenty about Guru, their relationship, the misunderstandings and the family bond. We get into the collabos with Nas, Pete Rock, De La Soul, Q-Tip, Bun B and K-Rino. We discuss the artists featured on One of The Best Yet, as well as those who weren't on the album but felt they should be. There was nothing off-limits and DJ Premier opened about Solar like we've never heard before. Of course, we had to have a little fun, so, we made Preem choose his best work outta Livin' Proof, The Sun Rises In The East or Hard To Earn. This was a great discussion with the GOAT. www.takeitpersonalradio.com Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal
690 Gang Starr - Step in the Arena
For the solo career of Guru, it is one that is - compared to Gang Starr - everything but consistent; mix it in with debates about how his relationship with Solar was in truth and you have a bit of a sad end to the life & career of one of the most distinctive voices in Hip-Hop.TIMESTAMPS:Weekly Music Roundup - (0:40)Ben:Big Sean - Better Me Than YouJuicy J - Ravenite Social ClubDoechii - Alligator Bites Never HealMozzy - Brash DummiesOcean Wisdom - Fight ClubCharlie:Audrey Powne - From the FireJuicy J - Ravenite Social ClubStephon Alexander - Spontaneous FruitJoya Mooi - Open HeartsLESiA - Affirmations To RealityK.A.A.N. & DJ Hoppa - In Due TimeK.A.A.N. & DJ Hoppa - Delusions Of GrandeurTank and The Bangas - The Heart, The Mind, The SoulDoechii - Alligator Bites Never HealCurren$y & DJ.Fresh - The Tonite Show The Sequel Big Sean - Better Me Than You Ocean Wisdom - Fight ClubTopic Intro/Ben's Research House - (23:17)Guru's Jazzmatazz, Vol. 1 - (32:31)Guru's Jazzmatazz, Vol. 2: The New Reality - (43:35)Guru's Jazzmatazz, Vol. 3: Streetsoul - (52:29)Baldhead Slick & da Click - (58:19)Version 7.0: The Street Scriptures - (1:02:21)Guru's Jazzmatazz, Vol. 4: The Hip Hop Jazz Messenger: Back to the Future - (1:05:23)Guru 8.0: Lost and Found - (1:07:51)Lighter Note - (1:19:48)Thanks for listening. The phrase "One of the Best Yet" has never been so apt. Maybe THE quintessential Golden Age Hip-Hop duo, Gang Starr started off with multiple iterations but once it was just the twosome of DJ Premier & Guru, it was over and it all culminated in projects from the late 80s to the late 2010s with the 90s work providing a shining example of what Hip-Hop was in the Golden Era.TIMESTAMPS:Weekly Music Roundup - (1:23)Ben:Planet Asia - Trust the Chain IIEminem - The Death of Slim ShadyCharlie:Hamzaa - 25!Rachel Chinouriri - Live From KOKOJWords - Beauty In EverythingMad Skillz - The Seven Number OnesThee Heart Tones - Forever & EverTopic Intro/Ben's Research House - (9:48)No More Mr. Nice Guy - (18:15)Step in the Arena - (27:12)Daily Operation - (36:15)Hard to Earn - (44:47)Moment of Truth - (51:56)The Ownerz - (1:01:41)One of the Best Yet - (1:08:18)Lighter Note - (1:19:29)Thanks for listening. In episode 22 of Careers in the Business of Law, Major Baisden talks with David about his evolution in the industry from building computers to building servers to building companies, always serving the mission of truth, the exploding variety of data sources at play in the market today, and updating proven formulas with the times with Brooklyn rap duo Gang Starr. Today's guest is Major Baisden. Major Baisden, a serial entrepreneur and technology enthusiast, is the Chief Executive Officer of Lineal, a global legal technology services company leveraging proprietary artificial intelligence and process-driven workflows to solve information governance, eDiscovery, privacy, compliance, and DSAR for law firms and corporations. He is also the former co-founder and president of Iris Data Services, an eDiscovery firm sold to Epiq Systems in 2015 for $134 million. Baisden currently lends his expertise to connecting Lineal's revenue-related functions, from marketing to sales, customer success, pricing, and revenue operations. (00:09) - Welcome Major Baisden: David Cowen introduces Major Baisden, a serial entrepreneur in the business of law, engaging him in a lively discussion about his career and his travel. Major recounts how he did about 225,000 miles of travel last year and plans to keep that same cadence this year. (00:42) - Major's Leadership at Lineal: Major shares his professional journey, detailing his roles from the Department of Justice, to Xact, to creating Iris Data Services and leading Lineal. Major identifies the thruline as “we exist to help law firms make more money, to improve the lives of our clients, and to improve the lives of our employees." (02:11) - Reflecting on Industry Evolution: Discussing his path through various industry phases, Major highlights what changed and what was different at each rung of his career jungle gym. “The great thing about law is that the legal process doesn't change," emphasizing stability in legal procedures amidst the many dynamic external changes he's weathered. “At the core, we serve a mission of truth.” (05:10) - The Shift to Data-Centric Legal Work: Major addresses the transformation in legal data management, moving from traditional documents to multiple data sources. He explains, "Every tool that you use on a daily basis to get your job done can be a data source," underlining the broadening scope of data in legal processes. Major explains that we're headed to a place where we are retaining knowledge better because everytime we go through the process, we learn something new. (09:23) - Admiration for Industry Colleagues: Major praises colleagues like Rose Jones and John Tucker at King & Spalding, Scott Milner at Morgan Lewis, and his mentor Andrew Seija from Relativity. “I think as a CEO, you have to have a very healthy dose of ‘I could be wrong,' that always lives in your brain, because there's always a different way. And sometimes those different ways are better. And so it's important for me to have a set of people that I go to.” (14:03) - From Childhood Dreams to Tech Entrepreneurship: Major recounts his early East Bay childhood, sitting around the family table and discussing a different article cut from the newspaper every night and dreaming of driving a taxi. His fascination with technology and his journey from aspiring engineer to tech entrepreneur began early. "I started building computers when I was 12. Back in the day, on AOL online, we'd get into chat groups and chat rooms and ask questions on bulletin board systems on how to make computers faster.” Major realized in college that he excelled at ideation and later leading teams and before he knew it he was managing whole teams of people running databases. (18:12) - Career Advice: "The most important thing is to be as self disinterested as possible," he advises, advocating for a selfless approach to professional growth and success. “I am the least important person when I think about identifying objectives.” (20:41) - Favorite music: Concluding the podcast, Major shares his love for 90s classic hip hop and the music of Brooklyn-based duo Gang Starr (Guru and DJ Premier) and his go to song 'You Know My Steez'. “It's not that I like music no one likes, you just probably won't hear it on the radio.” Mentions: Gang Starr, You know my Steez: https://open.spotify.com/track/2C3QwVE5adFCVsCqayhPW7?si=4e5a0cef3f66416a Rose Jones: https://www.kslaw.com/people/rose-jones John Tucker: https://www.kslaw.com/people/john-tucker Scott Milner: https://www.morganlewis.com/bios/smilner Andrew Sieja: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-sieja/

B. Cox reviews Gang Starr's classic fourth album Hard To Earn as it turns 30. After the critical success of 1992's Daily Operation, Guru and DJ Premier took a brief hiatus to pursue individual projects. Guru launched his Jazzmatazz series and Premier became one of the most sought after producers in industry, working with the likes Jeru the Damaja, The Notorious B.I.G., Nas and KRS-One. Coming back to record their fourth, the group wanted to prove that they were versatile and wanted to show that they could stray from their jazz-sampled sensibilities on their previous album and could rock with a different sound.Heavily involved with the project was the Gang Starr Foundation, a collective that was aligned with the duo that included the likes of Jeru, the hip-hop duo Group Home, Big Shug, Freddie Foxx (Bumpy Knuckles), Afu-Ra among others. The project featured Jeru, both Lil Dap and Melachi the Nutcracker and Big Shug. Unlike Daily Operation, the album was produced under a wider variety of musical influences. The album featured two classic singles: "DWYCK" with hip-hop duo Nice & Smooth (which was supposed to be originally on Daily Operation and "Mass Appeal". The album was critically acclaimed upon release and reestablished Gang Starr as a force within hip-hop. It also served as a forerunner to a number of different albums over the next 18 months that were credited as being pivotal to the New York hip-hop scene being a power center once again in the hip-hop landscape. But music historian and writer Dart Adams says Boston has long had a flourishing Black music scene, producing icons like Donna Summer and game-changing groups like New Edition. This week on Say More, in honor of hip-hop's 50th birthday, Dart shares the vibrant history of the Boston scene.
