This week I'm joined by Dr Jan Eppingstall to unpack how our brains handle ambiguity, why fear of making mistakes can keep us stuck, and how intolerance of uncertainty feeds into hoarding behaviours. We break down practical ways to build up your tolerance for not knowing and share some strategies that might actually make a difference. Uncertainty and Its Challenges Definition and context of uncertainty Evolutionary reasons for discomfort with uncertainty (Selfish Brain Theory) Contrast between historical resource scarcity and modern abundance Our minds' outdated ways of managing uncertainty Cognitive Closure What is cognitive closure? Difference between cognitive closure (psychological need for definite answers) and “closure” in pop culture (emotional resolution) How it relates to need for certainty in present/future, not just past events The creation of cognitive closure measurement scales by researchers Factors influencing need for cognitive closure: Personality traits: Conscientiousness, neuroticism (now called emotionality), openness to experience, extroversion Trauma history and its effects on the nervous system Neurodivergence (with emphasis on autism and “sticky thinking”) Combination of personality, trauma, and neurodivergence Intolerance of Uncertainty Psychological definition of intolerance of uncertainty Negative cognitive bias: How it affects perception and response Manifestations in people experiencing uncertainty as distress Its direct relevance to hoarding behaviours The Link Between Hoarding Disorder and Intolerance of Uncertainty Research findings: intolerance of uncertainty as a predictor of hoarding symptom severity Usefulness in early intervention strategies intolerance of uncertainty as a transdiagnostic factor (across anxiety, some depression, and other mental health conditions) How heightened anxiety sensitivity in hoarding perpetuates avoidance Experiential avoidance in hoarding (saving and acquiring behaviours) Connection between maladaptive behaviours and intolerance of uncertainty Fear of Making Mistakes and Perfectionism Common fears of mistakes in hoarding (disposing, acquiring, putting things away) Perfectionism's role (fear of failure, not wasting) All-or-nothing thinking and rigid decision-making rules Paralysing effect of avoidance due to fear of mistakes Not making a decision as a potential mistake itself Interaction and reinforcement between perfectionism and intolerance of uncertainty Comorbidity and Severity Research on multiple diagnoses: More than half of psychiatric patients have more than one diagnosis Diagnostic challenges and overlapping criteria How comorbidity compounds issues: More symptoms and more complexity Higher intolerance of uncertainty linked with more severe hoarding, especially when other conditions are present Impact on treatment difficulty intolerance of uncertainty's Impact on Acquiring and Discarding Behaviours How acquiring reduces fear of missing out and future needs Difficulty discarding as protection against future regret Shame around mistake-making Common inner questions: Future use, responsibility, relationships More complexity leading to more avoidance Nuances in intolerance of uncertainty and Hoarding Study on sub-factors of uncertainty: Factor 1: Negative self-referential implications (linked to hoarding severity) Factor 2: Perception of uncertainty as unfair (not linked) Internal vs. external perspectives on uncertainty Relevance of anxiety-driven self-criticism Changing Relationship to Uncertainty: Curiosity and Reframing Rilke's quote on “loving the questions” Transforming approach from fear to curiosity Curiosity as a therapeutic tool Creativity in imagining alternatives and solutions Relevance of loss aversion and cognitive biases Modern Life and Uncertainty Intolerance Research linking increased use of technology (instant answers) to rising intolerance of uncertainty Smartphone/information overload and decreased tolerance “muscle” Relevance to hoarding (desire for backups, information saving) Example: IMDb, screenshots, saving digital info Treatment Strategies Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) effects on intolerance of uncertainty in anxiety Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and exposure-based methods: Pros and cons Importance of a therapist experienced in error-related distress and uncertainty Key skills: Observing distress, sitting with uncomfortable feelings, gradual exposure Self-help approaches: Reframing mistakes as learning Practicing self-compassion Values-based decision-making Systematic exposure to small errors Gradually breaking rigid rules (e.g., waste, tidiness) Recognising individual differences and seeking appropriate support Embracing Mistakes and Humanity Learning from therapist/client anecdotes Cultural expectations around perfectionism vs. real human messiness How mistakes can be positive or even entertaining Letting go of the need for perfection The Four Cs for Managing Uncertainty From Elizabeth Weingarten: Curiosity, Conversation, Community, Commitment How to foster each: Curiosity: Approach with questions and exploration Conversation: Discuss uncertainties with trusted people Community: Build social support Commitment: Dedication to exploring questions and knowing when to let go Links Hillman, S. Making Mistakes at Practice: A Foundation for Growth https://teachhoops.com/ Practice is the designated arena for making mistakes, and coaches should embrace this reality as a cornerstone of player development. Rather than viewing errors as failures, they ought to be framed as invaluable learning opportunities, essential for mastering complex skills and decision-making in the heat of competition. Creating an environment where players feel safe to take risks and err without fear of immediate reprimand is paramount. This psychological safety encourages experimentation and allows players to push their boundaries, ultimately leading to deeper understanding and more robust skill acquisition. A coach's reaction to mistakes sets the tone for the entire team's growth mindset. To effectively leverage mistakes at practice, coaches can employ several strategies. Providing immediate, constructive feedback is crucial, focusing on what happened and how to correct it, rather than dwelling on the error itself. Encouraging repetition of the correct technique after a mistake helps solidify the proper execution. Furthermore, fostering a "next play" mentality teaches players resilience and the ability to move on from errors quickly, preventing mental blocks. By consistently reinforcing that mistakes are part of the learning journey—opportunities for analysis and improvement—coaches can transform common practice errors into powerful lessons that build confidence and competence.  When we watch a baby to start walking, we never will see that the baby will beat itself up for failure. The baby has even its fun to learn… And that also comes true for learning a language…But if the parents are impatient to teach their baby/child something they show that failing is terrible… Even we can't learn without failing. We win or learn!Failing is our definition for not winning…1. Mistakes are our best teachers…Think over what have been you steepest learning curves? Mostly our mistakes!2. Mistakes mean action… If we don't make mistakes, we don't do anything. At least a mistake is an action in the right direction. If you don't risk, you can't win… Or you remain in your comfort zone… 3. Mistakes make you smarter… Until we make mistakes, we don't know it… Until we have made the maximum mistakes, we can't be that expert!4. Mistakes are (mostly) reversible.Mistakes are actually much less risky than we think…  Most of the time, we don't get that worst outcome… Relax, our fantasia is driving us crazy and not that mistake.  If we make a mistake, we apologize and even get so deeper in contact with that person… 5. Mistakes make our life exciting…And this is so true… Without mistakes, life is boring… We can't tell anything funny from our life when we didn't have made a mistake.6. Mistakes create compassion…After we have done so many things wrong (I hope you have done so), we develop compassion… 7. Mistakes make us creative… Because we have to find a solution… Then we are engaged in nullifying our adverse outcome… Bum, and we create something awesome… For instance, I got mold in my photo lenses… What to do… To prevent mold or kill mold just pump ozone with a cheap ozone pump from an aquarium in the lens… Afterward, put the lens in a dry cabinet for photo equipment… My Video: The best things about making mistakes… https://youtu.be/RUjoDtYU1VEMy Audio: https://divinesuccess.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/Podcast.B/The-best-things-about-making-mistakes….mp3

Learning languages, in the early days, is all about making mistakes, and then as we improve, we can see the benefits of really getting to know people and cultures by having common words and expressions. We still make mistakes though! In this episode I chat with three guests who've spent significant chunks of time in France and Italy, and have learnt much about these second homes through their gradual improvements with French and Italian. First up, I speak with Angela Correll who moved to Italy with just "survival Italian", but found it a good start nonetheless. I then chat with Steve Hoffman who has spent many years devoting himself to flawless French, and we also discuss our different approaches (let's just say my approach to German is the non-flawless version!). The Simpsons switches formats to horror anthology series this time of year, so shall Did I Do That?—we've got a collection of some of the scariest design disasters, missteps, failures, and goofs that have haunted designers this past summer at Future Fonts & Friends 2024!How can our anonymous designer ghosts find peace when haunted by a trifecta of specters in the form of opening up your letters' chakras, gingerbread power moves, and the challenges of Lidz franchising. Listen… IF YOU DARE!WANT A DESIGN CONFESSIONAL AT YOUR EVENT?If you have a live event and want me to set up another design confessional for it, either in Portland or beyond, let's talk! I'd love to do more events like this in the future.SPECIAL THANKSThe confessions used in this episode were collected as part of “Future Fonts and Friends,” a party held for TypeCon 2024 at Outlet in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday, July 25, 2024. All guests were cloaked in the shadow of anonymity—the scariest thing of all in our personal brand building world! Take that, social media! Thank you to all who came out and participated!Huge thanks again to Lizy Gershenzhon and Travis Kochel of Future Fonts for inviting me to be a part of the event, to the organizers of TypeCon for putting up with me, and (once again) to MVP Orion Cortez for building the confessional booths way back in 2023 based solely on two terrible sketches I made, then coming back out in 2024 to help me set them up again.Additional thanks to past guest Kate Bingaman-Burt of Outlet for her eternal support of / patience with me just in general, but especially the white-hot ball of stress that is me when faced with a live event. This episode features a parody of Billie Eilish's new song “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” and a parody of the character the Crypt Keeper, brought to death by John Kassir. “How different would our world be if every single person played football and grew up in a damn locker room...” Rex Ryan current ESPN Analyst and former NFL Head Coach We got a treat for you today...or as he would some say a God Dam Snack! In today's episode of The Pivot Podcast in partnership with Fanatics, former NFL head coach Rex Ryan, filling in for Fred who's away in London, joins Channing and Ryan for a conversation we never expected to be so in-depth and captivating. An episode full of humor and humility, this discussion isn't just a football fan's dream but it's one to tap into for anyone who's a believer in people, overcoming struggles and fighting internal battles privately while maintaining a tough demeanor on the outside and never being afraid to go toe to toe with anyone. Known for his brash personality, Rex Ryan has always unapologetically been himself which comes with a lot of highs and positives but behind the walls is a story and journey we can all learn from. From growing up in Canada with his mom to dealing with bullies at school to moving with his father Buddy one of the best defensive minds in NFL history to forging his own coaching legacy to being a dad, a husband and locker room leader, Rex opens up like never-before on all the chapters of his life and the ones still unwritten… As the current NY Jets navigate team controversy, Rex takes us through some of the most pivotal moments for him as a man and head coach sharing never-before-heard football stories, defensive mind, motivational tactics, Hard Knocks moments and answering for some of his questionable choices. The one thing Channing wants to know is, why isn't he coaching now? An answer that may surprise you... Having a little fun, Ryan gets Coach to explain some crazy comments he made about Channing back during Dolphins Jets rivalries as Rex peels back the layers of a three-decade-long coaching journey, recounting the highs of taking the Jets to the playoffs and the lingering regret of never winning a Super Bowl. He breaks down his unique coaching style, as seen on Hard Knocks, and emphasizes the importance of physicality and toughness on the field. Rex also shares a personal side of his story, talking about how growing up with dyslexia influenced his creative approach to the game and his ability to problem-solve as a coach. Tackling some unwanted headlines over the years, Rex addresses his infamous private matters leaking publicly and doubles down on how even to this day he loves his wife's feet and isn't afraid to say it. As we wrap the episode, Ryan strikes a chord and the conversation turns emotional as Rex reflects on the pride he feels watching his son follow in his coaching footsteps, continuing the Ryan family legacy and reveals one regret that still weighs on him now. Interior Design for the Soul: 5 Life Lessons to Elevate Your Self-Image One crucial aspect of embracing contrast in life is recognizing and integrating all facets of oneself, including the shadow side. Tonya Leigh explores the significance of embracing contrast in interior design and how it can be applied to life. Just as in design, where contrasting elements can add depth and richness, embracing the diverse aspects of our personalities enables us to explore neglected or denied facets of ourselves, fostering personal growth and self-acceptance. Tonya stresses the concept of the shadow side, a term introduced by psychologist Carl Jung, which refers to the darker, less desirable aspects of our personalities that we often try to conceal or suppress. She underscores the importance of not only showcasing our positive traits but also acknowledging and accepting the parts of ourselves that may not always be bright and cheerful. Tune in to explore the parallels between interior design choices and self-image transformation. In this episode, I was lucky enough to interview Leopold van Oosten, the CEO and Founder of Amsterdam Standard. Leopold recounts his entrepreneurial journey, which began in a small, unremarkable town in the Netherlands. Initially studying hotel management with aspirations of entering the hospitality industry, his path took a dramatic turn during an internship in London in 2001. There, he was exposed to the potential of online services, particularly the burgeoning online ticketing industry. Inspired by the innovation he witnessed in London, Leopold and his friend launched the first local online ticket service in the Netherlands. This venture, while successful, eventually led Leopold into the world of digital agencies, where he found his niche in building platforms and solutions, marking the beginning of Amsterdam Standard.Leopold shares the challenges of running an agency, especially in a highly competitive industry. He notes that after 19 years of relatively smooth operations, the past year has been particularly tough due to various global crises impacting the IT sector. This forced Amsterdam Standard to rethink its marketing strategy, leading them to adopt a new approach inspired by Donald Miller's "How to Build a StoryBrand." Despite the difficulties, Leopold remains passionate about his work, particularly in helping SaaS companies scale their operations. Let's explore into the canals of Amsterdam and uncover the secrets behind Leopold van Oosten's 19-year digital legacy on The First Customer!Guest Info:Amsterdam Standardhttps://www.amsterdamstandard.comLeopold van Oosten's LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/leopoldvanoosten/Connect with Jay on LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jayaigner/The First Customer Youtube Channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@thefirstcustomerpodcastThe First Customer podcast websitehttps://www.firstcustomerpodcast.comFollow The First Customer on LinkedInhttp://www.linkedin.com/company/the-first-customer-podcast/
