News You Need to Know - First Cousin Marriages (03/18/26) by 96.5 WKLH
Somehow, I've never seen this film before for reasons to do with "the 90's" as described in the episode. What a great experience to watch a ruthlessly efficient screenplay in the hands of such an excellent and fun cast. Plus, it turns out there's plenty of funny off-screen content surrounding this production, including casting drama, studio interference, and some deft machinations from both screenwriter Dale Launer and director Jonathan Lynn. The Rolling Stone Oral History of My Cousin Vinny The 1985 "controversial" profile of MCV screenwriter Dale Launer.

WEISBERG4.mp3 Weisberg discusses the evolution of divorce in New York, noting a significant increase during the Gilded Age. The scandal influenced novelist Edith Wharton, Mary's cousin, who later wrote about these social circles. Additionally, the diary of George Templeton Strong serves as a vital historical window. (4)
Pigweed and Crowhill drink and review Lindemans Pecheresse, a Belgian Fruit Lambic, then discuss the show's uncanny ability to predict the future. In this episode we update past topics and predictions. An earlier show discussed kill switches and cameras in cars. There have been some developments to that story. On the show where we questioned whether psychiatry is science (mostly it isn't), the boys asked if it was time to bring back involuntary commitment. We also discussed the over-prescription of psychiatric drugs and the interesting correlation between mental health and going to church. Pigweed called attention to the problem of cousin marriage, and what do you know? -- Britain is experiencing a huge rise in birth defects as a result of cousin marriage from Pakistani immigrants. At peak trans madness, the boys predicted a time when the monsters who are promoting this barbarity were fined and jailed. We're starting to see it happen. Recently, some of these ghoulish doctors were fined millions of dollars for performing a double mastectomy on a child. The boys did a show calling out gerrymandering foolishness, but Maryland is still going full speed ahead. To "protect democracy," of course. Another show on Persia predicted the bombs would start dropping within ten days. That prediction was exactly right. They also predicted that the regime will fall in two months. That prediction is still outstanding. The boys discuss the ongoing Iran war. Re: the infrastructure show we update the "sewage in the Potomac" story and wonder again why the "mainstream press" is so uninterested. We recap the Julian Assange and Edward Snowden situation. Trump is now considering pardoning them and then bringing them in to help expose corruption inside the intelligence system. That would be interesting. The show ends with a letter from long-time listener and contributor JR about whether Social Security is a Ponzi scheme.
Today I chat with my second-cousin Megan who is a younger yet ever so wise Millennial toddler mom and Renaissance woman. Our moms are first cousins. Megan has worked as a doula and now runs a doula placement agency in Southern California. She's also a mom to a three-and-a-half-year-old daughter, an IBCLC, and a Nurse Practitioner. Have you heard of the company Carrot? Women who are not even adequately trained to be postpartum doulas are able to bypass the necessary time and in-person training it takes in order to become one in order to get their piece of the pie. Why is this problematic? When families hire a postpartum doula, the expectation is that the entire family unit will be cared for including the home. There is an expectation that breastfeeding support will be offered and that the postpartum doula is actually knowledgeable about breastfeeding. Instead, women are able to claim the title of postpartum doula while actually stepping into the misleading role of overnight nanny or newborn care specialist.During this episode, I also ask Megan for her nuanced opinions on bottle and pacifier usage (it's not so black-and-white!). We discuss what is really attributing to textbook low supply. We delve into a breastfeeding technique I had never heard of before called “reverse cycling” and why we think it's so seldom discussed. It's typically used as a strategy for moms who must return to work and don't want to affect their supply or offer formula, so they hold off on nursing all day and then nurse truly on-demand all throughout the night. It does require bedsharing in order to be successful.I ask her what is the worst breastfeeding advice she's ever heard as someone who is trained as an IBCLC, a Nurse Practitioner, a former doula and a toddler mom who is still nursing.Despite having to return to work outside the home (part-time for 12 hour shifts!), Megan is still successfully nursing her 3.5 year old.Connect/book a consult with Megan here.Grab your FREE guide:Questions To Ask A Prospective Birth Attendant or MidwifeSupport the showStay Connected With Me: Subscribe to Moms Off The Record on YouTube JOIN THE MOTR PRIVATE COMMUNITY here Book a potty training 1:1 consult with me here Discount codes & links to my favorite courses and products here Love Moms off the Record? The Rizz Show crew proves once again that no topic is too ridiculous for a deep dive. This episode of the comedy podcast kicks off with a surprisingly serious debate about the band KISS. With their iconic face paint, costumes, and theatrical stage shows, the question becomes unavoidable: are they technically clowns? The gang breaks down Gene Simmons' own comments about the makeup while arguing whether rock legends can also be considered circus performers. From there, the conversation takes a turn toward romance… or at least what passes for romance in modern times.A new survey reveals that a huge percentage of people have dedicated bedroom playlists, which naturally leads the show down a rabbit hole of questionable “sexy songs.” The crew reacts to the list — featuring artists like Ed Sheeran, Ginuwine, and Boyz II Men — while sharing stories about middle school dances, awkward slow songs, and why some music choices may actually ruin the mood instead of improving it.But the real chaos begins when the show starts discussing the hidden meanings behind common dating phrases. When someone says “let's just be friends,” do they mean it literally? What about “I'm fine”? The gang attempts to decode the subtle language people use in relationships — with Lern providing the much-needed female perspective while the guys attempt (and mostly fail) to interpret the signals. And then the conversation hits the internet's most uncomfortable hypothetical.A viral question asks couples what they would do if a DNA test revealed they were secretly related. Would you stay together if you discovered your spouse was your cousin? What about a sibling? The crew debates every scenario imaginable, from accidental cousin marriages to the complicated family tree math that comes with it.Naturally, things escalate quickly as the gang tries to figure out what that would mean for kids, genetics, and whether your child would technically also be your niece or nephew. Yes… the conversation goes there.By the end of the episode, the show has explored rock band clowns, questionable romantic playlists, relationship psychology, and some truly confusing family genetics — which is pretty much exactly what you expect from a chaotic comedy podcast like this one.If you enjoy sarcastic humor, weird news, pop culture commentary, and completely unhinged debates between friends, this episode delivers everything you love about a daily comedy podcast.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In October 2017, in the quiet hills of Lawrence County, Ohio, 26-year-old Stacey Holston was trying to move on from a secret she knew could destroy everything. What she didn't realize was that the man at the center of it wasn't ready to let go. By the time her husband came home from work that evening, a broken routine, a chilling phone call, and a locked door would signal that something was terribly wrong. Waiting inside the house was someone the family knew and trusted. What unfolded next would devastate an entire community and reveal just how dark obsession can become….If you're new here, don't forget to follow the show for weekly deep dives into the darkest true crime cases! Bad Dads Film Review goes full courtroom chaos this week with My Cousin Vinny (1992) — the fish-out-of-water legal comedy where two broke New York kids take a wrong turn into the Deep South… and somehow end up charged with murder because of a misunderstanding that starts with a can of tuna.Sidey finally ticks off a long-standing gap (he'd never seen it), and we break down why this film still works: a tight premise, a brilliant “outsider vs small-town system” vibe, and a courtroom structure that's way smarter than it has any right to be for a broad comedy. Joe Pesci turns up looking like he's wandered in from Goodfellas in cowboy boots, tries to blag his way through Alabama procedure, and gets repeatedly threatened with contempt by an all-time stern judge (Fred Gwynne, aka Herman Munster). What we talked aboutThe opening setup: poverty-tour Americana, the road trip, and the tuna “crime of the century” that accidentally feeds the tension.Mistaken confession comedy: how the boys basically incriminate themselves… for the wrong offence.Vinny's legal “credentials”: six tries at the bar, no trial experience, and a running battle with courtroom etiquette (“judge” vs “your honour”, the suit, the procedure handbook). The judge dynamic: why Fred Gwynne is the perfect straight man and how the contempt/lock-up beats become a recurring gag.Mona Lisa Vito (Marisa Tomei): the film's secret weapon — and why her role isn't just “girlfriend”, she's the brain that solves the case.Courtroom mechanics: cross-exams, witness deconstruction, and why parts of this film get referenced in law-school conversations as a simple example of dismantling testimony. The car/tire evidence: the key pivot from “they're screwed” to “hang on…” and the satisfying payoff when the story flips.Does it hold up? Runtime bloat (two hours is generous for this kind of comedy), how a lot of the plot collapses in the internet era, and why it's surprisingly not as offensively “of its time” as plenty of early-90s comedies. The Oscar chat: why Tomei winning Best Supporting Actress felt weird for a comedy… and whether it was actually deserved.Standard warning: we spoil the beats as we go, because that's the whole fun of a courtroom film.If you want a movie that's basically “competence porn disguised as a daft comedy” — where the final win is earned by actual reasoning rather than magic — this one's worth your time. (And yes: Tomei still, somehow, only gets more powerful with age.)Streaming note from the episode: available on Disney+.You can now text us anonymously to leave feedback, suggest future content or simply hurl abuse at us. Love Month ends the only way it possibly could on Episode 449 of Friends Talking Nerdy—by dragging Love's chaotic cousin into the spotlight: Hate.Professor Aubrey and Tim The Nerd take a hard look at the emotional fuel that powers both love and hate. These aren't mild feelings. They're high-octane psychological states that flood your nervous system, sharpen your focus, and sometimes hijack your better judgment. When you're caught in hate, your brain isn't calmly evaluating evidence—it's protecting identity, tribe, ego. It feels righteous. It feels urgent. It feels necessary. And sometimes… it is.The episode explores how hateful emotions can be triggered, amplified, and weaponized. Professor Aubrey and Tim The Nerd unpack how modern media ecosystems thrive on outrage—how algorithms reward emotional intensity, how headlines are engineered to spike cortisol, and how we can end up furious about events that don't actually affect our day-to-day lives. Not all anger is manipulation, though. Sometimes anger is a signal that something unjust is happening. The key question becomes: are you responding to reality, or reacting to narrative? The conversation then turns toward history and politics—how leaders throughout time have used fear and hatred to consolidate power. When hate becomes identity, opponents stop being neighbors with different views and start becoming enemies. That shift narrows empathy and makes compromise feel like betrayal. The cost isn't just political. It's human. This episode doesn't preach. It dissects. It asks what hate does to the brain, to relationships, to society. It asks when anger is clarifying and when it's corrosive. And it challenges listeners to recognize when they're being emotionally steered. As Love Month closes, the energy doesn't fade—it transforms. Starting next week, the theme for March is History. Because if we're going to understand our present emotions, we'd better understand where they've been before.Songs of the Week:“The Harder They Come” – Jimmy Cliff“Break Stuff” – Limp BizkitEmotion is powerful. Understanding it is even more powerful. As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song.
