Beloved Australian comedian Aaron Gocs has appeared in the Netflix film The Merger, hosted videos for Vice and appeared in numerous Australian TV shows. But his roots are punk and ska. He discovered the music from Mighty Mighty Bosstones' hit single, "The Impression That I Get," but soon learned about local ska bands. His first-ever show was Melbourne-based punk (and sometimes ska) band The Living End and local Brisbane ska group Wiseacre. But soon, after diving into the music, he discovered Less Than Jake, who became his all-time favorite band. And he would follow them all over Australia when they'd visit, even if that meant he would get any sleep. Today we speak with Aaron Gocs about ska, Australia, and where these two worlds meet. We talk about Warped Tour's first venture to Australia in 1998, Aaron's favorite local ska program (Ska Trek, every Thursday at 8p!), why he's retired his skanking boots (And semi-retired from stage-diving), and his deep love for The Mountain Goats. We also discuss several Australian ska bands like The Resignators, The Porkers, Area-7, Allniters, and Strange Tenants. He explains what a "stitch-up" is to us. Plus we discuss some unique Australian food and animals. Cane Toads, anyone? We also find out what Mr. Bean had to do with Aaron getting kicked off of Twitter! Tunes & TumblersA podcast pairing music & original craft cocktails. Todd Rundgren is a legendary musician and producer whose list of credits is impressive as the man himself is down to earth. He had his own string of pop hits—including the novelty song “Bang on the Drum All Day”—and experimental albums, both as a solo artist and with the Nazz. He produced Meat Loaf’s Bat Out of Hell, one of the biggest-selling albums of all time, as well as New York Dolls’ self-titled debut, one of the most influential. This month, he’s been on the “Clearly Human” tour, which—due to obvious reasons—is all virtual. As a tech pioneer, he’s doing things a bit different, as you’ll hear in the podcast. Eric Slick is a fellow Philly boy and longtime fan of Rundgren’s who was excited to chat with him. Slick is best known as the drummer in the excellent Dr. Dog, and he’s also a frequent Talkhouse contributor. If that’s not enough, Slick recently released a magnificent solo record called Wiseacre. The two chat about making records, playing shows, and—of course—a certain former president. This episode was produced by Kevin O’Connell. The Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by The Range.

Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

This week on Transmissions, we're joined by songwriter, Dr. Dog drummer, and noted Twitter personality Eric Slick. His new album of classic pop songcraft is called Wiseacre. Best known for his work with Dr. Dog and his wife, songwriter Natalie Prass, Wiseacre was inspired by the golden-hued melodies of Harry Nilsson, Haruomi Hosono, and a general '70s gloss. It's a deeply personal record, one that explores contentment and domesticity, as well as unpacking no small amount of personal weirdness and trauma.   Eric joined Aquarium Drunkard contributor Ben Kramer—you might know him from Radio Free Aquarium Drunkard’s The Tonight Zone, as featured on the Adult Swim live stream to get into it all: how his marriage to Prass influenced the lyrics of the record, how his meditation practice informs his songwriting, and what it's like to get into a real songwriting groove.

Slick is best known as the drummer for Dr. Dog (performing on their albums Shame, Shame (2010), Be The Void (2012), B-Room (2013), The Psychedelic Swamp (2016) and Abandoned Mansion (2016)), but his solo work in the last half-decade has been consistently impressive and wholly captivating. This week's Ska Show with Beefy is a sombre affair after the news that Beefy's great friend Nik Snieder tragically passed away on Friday after a short illness. Nik and Beefy were responsible for The Sick Kids Skank gigs in Brisbane many moons ago. The best way Beefy could pay tribute to Nik was by playing the music he loved and by celebrating with the bands that played on those tremendous nights. Beefy spins live tracks from Strange Tenants, The Porkers, Area 7 and dredges the archives with Wiseacre, Blowhard, The Kingtides, Brisbane City All Skas, Furious Turtles, The Kingpins. Beefy throws in some of Nik's favourite tunes from Madness, The Beat, Bad Manners and The Specials. Our hearts go out to his wife Clare and their family. The great man was taken far too soon! Rest in Noise big man.

Barry Cover has played drums in a lot of bands, from Northern Virginia to Richmond. He started out playing Jam for Man with a band called Lake Cocytus, moved on to gigs with JarHead at the local spots like Music Store and Dharma Coffee House, then branching out to Asylum, Memory Lane, and the Loft. When he moved to RVA, he was in high demand, joining Wiseacre, Dimestore Hoods, and Wheelbite. Later, he continued his career with Amoeba Men, Immortal Avenger, Municipal Waste, and the Goons. Finally, he got back to his metal roots with Volture. He's focusing on his career as a chef right now, but he's such a great dad that he set up a band and rehearsed for a month just so his young son could live out his rock dreams of writing songs about Minecraft and fronting a band on his birthday. It's difficult to find JarHead's music, but you can see them playing at Jenkins Hill here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFCULg1gPaI&t=527s.
