What are ProducerHead Loops?Gems from past conversations worth running back.Perfect for when you need a quick hit of inspiration. This Loop:In this ProducerHead Loops episode, Mark de Clive-Lowe opens up about the long journey toward belonging, identity, and creative truth. Growing up between cultures and never fully feeling like he fit in, Mark describes how that lifelong search eventually led him back to his roots, and deeper into himself. He shares how reconnecting with his Japanese ancestry transformed not just his life, but his music. By embracing vulnerability and telling personal stories through sound, Mark found a new creative framework where meaning mattered more than aesthetics or technical perfection. Performing music rooted in ancestry and lived experience became the first time he truly felt like he was defining the paradigm, not chasing one. This Loop is about courage. About letting go of hipness, trends, and external validation in favor of honesty. When you are bold enough to be yourself, the work resonates more deeply, not just with others, but with you. From Episode: 031. Bold Enough To Be Yourself: Mark de Clive-LoweWant more like this? Mark shared invaluable perspectives on:* Maintaining a playful approach to creation despite professional pressures* Non-musical skills that have proven crucial for his independent career* The importance of treating people well throughout your professional journey* Balancing artistic creation with the business side of musicEquipment Failures and Performance StoriesSome of the most entertaining moments of our conversation came when Mark shared stories of equipment failures during international performances:"There I was, in São Paulo, Brazil, performing for thousands of people when suddenly my entire system crashed. No sound, nothing. In that moment, you have a choice—panic or pivot. I chose to pivot, jumping on the acoustic piano while my tech scrambled to reboot everything. Those moments of improvisation often lead to the most memorable performances."Episode GuideFor those who want to dive directly into specific topics:00:00 - Intro to ProducerHead and Mark de Clive-Lowe01:12 - Community Building01:27 - Creative Workflow and Time Management06:41 - Acceptance and Overcoming Challenges12:10 - Non-Musical Skills for Independent Artists16:54 - The Importance of Humanity in Music22:03 - Funny Stories from the Studio29:06 - Final Thoughts and AdviceThree Essential Takeaways* Protect Your Creative Time: In a world designed for distraction, intentionally guarding your creative time and space is essential for productive creation.* Practice Acceptance, Not Judgment: Mark's approach to music shifted profoundly when he learned to accept rather than judge moments in his playing, allowing for greater freedom and creativity.* The Well Is Infinite: Even after creating 20+ albums, Mark believes creative potential is limitless - perseverance through difficult periods will always lead to new inspiration.References & ConnectionsAlbums Mentioned:* "Timeless" by Goldie* "Voodoo" by D'Angelo* "São Paulo, Brazil" by César Mariano* "Past Present (Tone Poems Across Time)" Mark's latest albumArtists Referenced:* Pino Palladino* DJ Spinna* Herbie Hancock* Miles Davis* Yussef DayesBooks & Films:* "Inception" (film)* "The Matrix" (film)* "The Book of Five Rings" by Miyamoto Musashi (book)* "Mastery" by Robert Greene (book)* "Mo' Better Blues" (Spike Lee film)Tech & Equipment:* Ableton Live (DAW)* Logic (DAW)* "Touchable" iPad app for controlling Ableton* MPC 3000 (Akai sampler/drum machine)* Maschine (Native Instruments sampler/drum machine)Connect with Mark*
Synopsis: On this month's “Meet the BIPOC Press,” award-winning journalists Maria Hinojosa & Chenjerai Kumanyika lay out the constitutional crisis before us and ask what the media's role is in this moment. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description: In the US today, immigrants, students, visitors and even U.S. residents — are facing exclusion, militarization, detention, rendition, and elimination of basic due process rights. Are our media doing enough to sound the alarm? In recent weeks, the government has detained students like Mahmoud Khalil, Rümeysa Öztürk and Mohsen Mahdawi, apparently over their support for Palestine. Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland man who was wrongfully exported to El Salvador, is being held at the notorious CECOT mega prison. We've also seen widespread ICE operations, random visas revoked and ideologically-driven attacks on the funding and functioning of our institutions of higher education. Our guests on this month's Meet the BIPOC Press live and work at the intersection of these issues: Maria Hinojosa is the co-anchor and Executive Producer of Latino USA, and producer of the Pulitzer-prize winning podcast, Suave — which is just out with a second season. She is a Distinguished Journalist-in-Residence at Barnard College. Chenjerai Kumanyika is a Peabody Award-winner, creator and co-host of Uncivil, and creator and host of the podcast series Empire City: The Untold Origin Story of the NYPD. He is also an Assistant Professor of Journalism at New York University. As the Republican regime moves towards authoritarianism, will the media stand for democracy before it's too late?“What's being taken advantage of in this moment is the painting of a picture of people who are, to use that 1990s term, ‘super predators,' therefore, they deserve nothing, no due process. It's not true. But if you only consume media that is coming from the Trump administration, you are convinced that all of these people who are being taken out of the country are terrifying.” - Maria HinojosaGuests:• Maria Hinojosa: Pulitzer-Prize Winning Journalist & Founder, Futuro Media; Distinguished Journalist-in-Residence, Barnard College.• Chenjerai Kumanyika: Peabody-Prize Winning Audio Journalist, Uncivil & Empire City: The Untold Origin Story of the NYPD; Assistant Professor Journalism, NYU Music Credit: “Present Past” by Mark De Clive Lowe from his album Past Present (tones poems across time) released on BBE Records.. Transformative Power of Art: Ai Weiwei's Stand for Palestinian Rights and Global Issues. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description: In his recent graphic memoir “ZODIAC: A Graphic Memoir”, the renowned artist Ai Weiwei writes that artists should “ignite stories”, “fight for freedom” and “help us hope.” Over his long and defiant career, he has used his art in a wide variety of media to do just that. His past works such as "Sunflower Seeds" and "Remembering" confronted issues of censorship and human rights abuses in China; in a recent show in London, he asked questions of an AI Chatbot for his project “Ai vs AI”, including “Is there hope for peace?” Earlier this year, he faced criticism for his expressions of support for Palestinian rights and had a show in London canceled. In this wide-ranging conversation with Laura Flanders, they discuss the role of the artist and ask why is “Power so afraid of art and poets?” As attacks on free speech, surveillance and displacement continue to impact so many of us, how do we keep the doors of our minds open to possibility? And how can art and artists help lead transformation? All that, plus a commentary from Laura.“I'm not this kind of very active activist. I'm just being forced to act . . . But I'm proud of doing that because that is the meaning of life, to give dignity to life itself . . .” - Ai Weiwei“The real fear for me is [if] we lost [the] ability to ask the question. We lost our memory, we lost our sense of caring compassion . . .” - Ai Weiwei"We [do] not encourage people to have free thinking and judgment and that is the ground to produce Nazis or hypocrites. Mark De Clive-Lowe was gracious enough to spend a little time with me as we dive into his 10,000-hour journey. It all starts as he was born in New Zealand to a Japanese mother and New Zealander father, and was first introduced to jazz through his father's record collection. He rose to prominence in the early 2000s, way before jazz hybridity became a worldwide phenomenon, but alas, De Clive-Lowe was busy designing its blueprint. De Clive-Lowe showcases his breadth of skill as a producer, composer, and instrumentalist as we journey through his many albums, his wins, and setbacks. An artist who is as indebted to the jazz greats as much as hip hop, house, and experimental music icons, de Clive-Lowe challenges us to leave our preconceptions at the door and follow him down the path on a journey of his own discovery.Originally recorded and released July 22, 2020.Show Website: https://www.bedroombeethovens.comShow will be uploaded at 12 Midnight Central following show releaseFollow us on social mediaFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/hlnfradionetworkTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/HLNF_BulletinInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/heartlandnewsfeedMastadon: https://liberdon.com/@heartlandnewsfeedDiscord: https://discord.gg/6b6u6DTSupport us with your financial supportStreamlabs: https://streamlabs.com/heartlandmediaPayPal: https://www.paypal.me/heartlandmediaSquare Cash: https://cash.app/$heartlandnewsfeedPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/heartlandnewsfeedCrypto via 1UpCoin: https://1upcoin.com/donate/heartlandmedia

Hello, True believers and Tanaka's, back with another forehead spot. Got the good buddy and illustrious artist Mark de Clive-Lowe for this convo. It has been a minute since the last time we spoke in Japan. Mark's been in L.A. since all the madness started and has been able to make the best of it. With roots in Japan, New Zealand as well as the US & UK, Mark was able to give a unique perspective on this pandemic and opinions on how the different countries have handled it and what the situations are like there. We talk about transitioning from being mainly a touring artist and the changes he's made; there's also some future-talk on plans post, the evolution of artistry, NFT's, all that. Make sure to check out Mark's Patreon where he's released enough original songs for an entire album. Much appreciation to the mighty MdCL. 7e émission de la 49e session... Cette semaine, jazz modal et électro-jazz! En musique: Mabumi Yamaguchi Quartet sur l'album Leeward (Union, 1978); Madlib sur l'album Sound Ancestors (Madlib Invazion, 2021); Godtet sur l'album III (La Sape, 2020); Misc sur l'album Partager l'ambulance (Bonsoud, 2021); Mark De Clive-Lowe, Andrea Lombardini & Tommaso Cappellato sur l'album Dreamweavers (Mother Tongue, 2020); R+R=NOW sur l'album R+R=NOW Live (Blue Note, 2021)...
We catch Mark de Clive-Lowe at home, but only because it's 2020. Otherwise, he pretty much lives on the road, jumping all over the world to play and make music that spans jazz, hip hop, house. Although the first album in his collection was Madonna's "Like A Virgin," Mark has built his career on sounds that are a lot more esoteric and a lot less mainstream. He's generous enough to share some of the secrets that have made him an underground king, and he may surprise you a little with his openness to sounds that are outside of his realm. Learn how Mark switches up his approach for different rooms (or different countries), and what he thinks has made jazz such an important part of our musical heritage for over a century (hint: starts with an I). 028: Artyom ManukyanPowerhouse on the cello. Composer, improvisor, bandleader. Let’s spend some time with one of today’s most exciting string players. This is Play It Like It’s Music, I’m Trevor Exter. Thanks for listening.Welcome back! On Wednesday, February 26th of 2020 music is not content, it’s connection.I’m so glad I got a good one in today with one of my favorite cello players, and I’m biased. The guy is a rule breaker and a free spirit on the instrument, as well as a consummate musician who always plays from the heart. Artyom Manukyan is a real hero to cello players everywhere and that’s who we’re talking to today. He’s got two great albums out, the newest one is called Alone and you can hear it in all the places. A quick check-in, I am enjoying the weather here. It’s my first winter in LA and I gotta say, I’ll take it. Thanks. Also finishing up a couple of songs that I will be releasing to you soon. Things are sounding good here in the studio and I’m excited to get some music back out into the world. It’s been six years since I released any proper records and they were both EP’s. But lemme tell you, it’s been a journey. I won’t talk too much about it now because I’m still finishing up the tracks and have to stay focused, but it feels like the right time. But you know, trying to go out as a so-called “artist” can be quite daunting even after you’ve given yourself permission to do it. Some might say that’s where our troubles begin: in identifying ourselves as “artists” with all the baggage that term implies in our creative landscape. But the workaround is to let yourself define what the word means to you. For example, in the music business, “Artist”, “Composer” and “Musician” are three distinct roles. Separate jobs. But you can be all three. I hate it though, when people dodge the distinctions and start to call us “creatives”. That’s a lazy poaching of an Ad industry term. The reality for most of us is that we have a demon inside of us that won’t let us rest until we find expression for something new, original and of our own making.Call yourself what you want, but don’t let that part of you fall asleep for too long.Which brings me to our guest of the hour. I’m a cello guy, and I’d like to reassure you non-cello people that we don’t get too deep into the weeds here. Fear not!One thing that happens though - if you really grab the cello and commit to it - is that you realize it’s just a giant doorway into music. There are so many possibilities that the instrument will offer an imaginative player and it really demands a lot of discipline from us. It definitely does not play itself, though you can get that impression when watching a truly great player. The thing about Artyom, though - and this is why I wanted to talk to him on the show - is that he incorporates a deep knowledge of music with a capital M. He is definitely not confined to the standard view of what the cello can or should do. He’s blazing a trail through the modern instrumental landscape and all kinds of important players are taking note. He tours with Melody Gardot as an integral band member. He gigs around LA with the coolest and most forward-thinking players on the scene, folks like Mark De Clive-Lowe, Kamasi Washington, Flying Lotus, Tim Lefebvre and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. He just went to play on the Blue Note cruise, man!So he’s totally made it out of the cello crab-bucket, and that’s a thing we all can get behind. I’m super privileged to present my interview with the fantastic and fascinating Artyom Manukyan. As always, if you like the show, please tell a friend and help us spread the word. Otherwise it’s just us.OK, let’s go. Press PLAY above to hear my interview with Artyom ManukyanThanks for sticking around. Thanks to Artyom for spending some time with us.GO LISTEN TO HIS RECORDS. Nobody plays cello like this guy.You can find him online @artyommanukyan dot com and on the socials. Thanks for listening to Play It Like It's Music. If you liked the show, PLEASE tell a friend. Let's grow this thing:Follow me on social media @trevorexter and talk to me on there if you have thoughts about the show. We're all contending with a mutating professional landscape, jacked revenue streams and a lot of noise out there in the culture. But you gotta keep playing. We don't draw any lines here between scenes or styles. As always, thank you for listening and remember to play it like its music. You can check out my music on bandcamp and other places. Two artists, from different decades and veterans in their own right, presented to a new generation that's taking on bold new territories. Mark De Clive-Lowe's musical calling began when he discovered his father's jazz records around the dawn of acid house. From earnestly composing electronic music in his native New Zealand, to making a name for himself in the clubs of London and around the world, De Clive-Lowe has racked up points working with the likes of 4-Hero, Shirley Horn, and Lauren Hill. From Broken Beat to Blue Note, he's always delivered an inspired collaboration. His recent output has both worlds merging, producing something new and sonically exciting with CHURCH, Live at the Blue Whale and Heritage. Idris Ackamoor is the type of sonic treat that one really looks forward to and savors, knowing that it's the sort of pleasure that doesn't come around very often. Over the decades Ackamoor, with or without his band the Pyramids, has selectively released a series of wonderfully crafted gems steeped in soul, psychedelia, dub, and Afrobeat that are always heavy on spirituality and social awareness. His latest, An Angel Fell, may be his greatest–its freshness and originality make him a contender in the canon of jazz notables.
Mark de Clive-Lowe has been on the global scene for some time; Hailing from New Zealand, Mark made spent a decade in London immersed in the London broken beat scene and has traveled the world with his detailed setup, composing on the spot and mixing electronic and organic sounds. In 2019 mark is set to release Heritage - a two part album that takes him back to his mother's homeland - Japan. The two part album, due out in February and April, musically expresses his connection, respect, and deep personal roots.
