This week we're excited to present a conversation from the 2025 edition of the New York African Film Festival with Black Tea director Abderrahmane Sissako and producer Kessen Tall. This conversation was moderated by Film Comment editor Devika Girish. After saying no on her wedding day, Aya leaves the Ivory Coast for a new life in the buzzing “Chocolate City” of Guangzhou, China. In this district where the African diaspora meets Chinese culture, she gets hired in a tea boutique owned by Cai, a Chinese man. In the secrecy of the back shop, Cai decides to initiate Aya to the tea ceremony. Through the teaching of this ancient art, their relationship slowly turns into tender love. But for their burgeoning passion to lead to mutual trust, they must let go of their burdens and face their past. Having made its New York Premiere at Film at Lincoln Center earlier this month, Black Tea is currently playing in select theaters, courtesy of Cohen Media Group.

He Lost His Father at 11. 11 Years Later, “Oleku” Changed African Music Forever – Ice Prince's Story

Ice Prince's journey from losing his father at age 11 to becoming an Afrobeats pioneer is nothing short of extraordinary. In this deeply personal conversation, he reveals how spending 11 years as a "studio rat" prepared him for the magical moment when "Oleku" came together in just one hour, forever changing his life and the African music landscape. What makes Ice Prince's story remarkable is his perspective on responsibility. As an only son with both parents now deceased, he embraced his role as family provider from a young age, even crafting palm slippers to earn money. "I love it when they ask me," he says about supporting family members. "It gives me a sense of purpose." This grounding force helped him navigate fame when "Oleku" exploded across the continent, leading to his first international booking in Ghana – a connection he cherishes deeply. The conversation takes a fascinating turn as Ice Prince discusses the relationship between Nigerian and Ghanaian music scenes. Rather than seeing division, he passionately advocates for unity: "Accra is closer to Lagos than Jos is," he notes, emphasizing cultural connections over national boundaries. His vision extends beyond music to leadership, wishing African presidents would collaborate as frequently as artists do. "We need to unite our continent more, starting from the leadership to the artistry," he insists. With refreshing honesty, Ice Prince addresses cannabis use, relationship regrets, and the lessons he's learned across his decade-plus career. Now working on a new collaboration album with producer Chopsticks through Chocolate City distribution, he defines success not by accolades but by "happiness and being in a position to bless yourself and others." His book recommendations – including Think Big by Ben Carson – reveal the depth of thought behind his artistic expression.Whether you're a longtime fan or new to his music, this episode offers profound insights into the mind of a true African music pioneer who continues to evolve while staying true to his roots. The drumbeat of Washington, D.C. and the surrounding area is not politics. It's go-go music. The genre developed by Chuck Brown in 1976 features syncopated rhythms, a large ensemble of musicians and a rich drum beat to create a live experience that has fans dancing 'till they can't dance no more. Go-go has been nurtured by D.C. natives for decades, from the time the District was considered a majority Black “Chocolate City,” and the music has significantly influenced the broader region into Maryland and Virginia, known as the DMV. Its influence can be seen from fashion to food to lingo, especially among Black residents of the region.Go-go became the official music of Washington, D.C. in 2020, and in early 2025 the Go-Go Museum and Café will open in the southeast neighborhood of Anacostia — the cultural heart of Chocolate City. However, it wasn't an easy road for go-go to become widely celebrated in the District. Its evolution mirrors the trials and transformations of a rapidly changing D.C. and the feeling of many Black people who have found it harder and harder to call Washington home.In this episode, host Kai Wright hands the mic to producer Siona Peterous, who grew up in the DMV and has spent much of her adult life immersed in D.C.'s vibrant arts and culture scene. With a deep love for go-go, Peterous sits down to learn more about it from the co-founders of the Go-Go Museum and Café, Ronald Moten and Dr. Natalie Hopkinson. She also talks with Chris Proctor, lead talker of the Take Over Band (T.O.B.), which will celebrate 20 years in the go-go scene this Christmas Day.This episode serves as a primer to the complex and rich history of go-go, taking listeners on a journey to explore how the genre was born, how it became a cultural touchstone during some of D.C.'s darker times, and breaking down the elements that make go-go so unique. Whether you're new to the sound or already a fan, this episode will help you better understand what makes go-go such a powerful, enduring force in the city's identity. After you listen to the show, check out our playlist of go-go essentials here. I am lucky to have grown up in the house my dad grew up in, we've had the same home phone number since he was 9 years old. Being a fourth Generation native to Washington DC, is something you see less and less.Endlessly fascinated by discovery, every wine in the Ward Four collection is inspired by a loved one. Whether it's the playful, lighter and more fun personality of Teddy's skin contact white wines or the gutsier, fuller-bodied character of Ted's reds, you can tell every bottle has been made with love, compassion and honour.Ward Four Wines is built on my core four, but I would be nowhere without my godmom, uncles, aunties, and friends. He's also currently the senior co-editor of the Urban History Association's blog The Metropole, where he recently authored a great article called “Heroin and Chocolate City: Black Community Responses to Drug Addiction in the Nation's Capital, 1967-1973.” While it's not a book, “Heroin and Chocolate City” is a deeply-researched article that offers compelling new insights into how Washington, D.C., responded to heroin use in the late 60s and early 70s, when both D.C., and heroin, were really unique. *Note to listeners: Ryan realized later he connected Julius Hobson with SNCC. Play Episode Listen Later Feb 24, 2024 46:21

ABOUT MICHAEL JAI WHITEA highly trained martial artist and actor, Michael Jai White has broken barriers as a Hollywood star and international box office sensation. With his dynamic personality, agile abilities and a physique of a bodybuilder, Michael has earned respect for his versatile talents both on and off screen.Born November 10th in Brooklyn, New York, it was after watching the movie Five Fingers of Death, Michael's interest in the martial arts began. At the tender age seven, Michael started taking weekly Japanese Jujitsu classes to stay focused while growing up on the tough streets of Brooklyn. By age eight, Michael's family relocated to Bridgeport, Connecticut where he studied the Shotokan and Kyokushin forms of karate and earned his first black belt by age 13. Upton graduating from Bridgeport's Central High School, Michael went on to further his education, first attending Southern Connecticut and then UConn. While winning multiple championships as a national martial arts competitor, Michael became a Special Education teacher at Wilbur Cross Elementary School in Bridgeport.Bitten by the acting bug in college, while teaching, Michael began auditioning for commercials and acting gigs on weekends and summer breaks. Michael landed the lead role of Tom Robinson in the first Off-Broadway adaptation of To Kill A Mockingbird, starring opposite Tony Award Winner George Grizzard. Shortly after, Michael began landing jobs in commercials and guest starring roles on television shows and films; he eventually left teaching and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career full-time.Before long, Michael would go on to guest star on such hit television shows as Saved by the Bell, Martin, NYPD Blue, and CSI. Proving his acting ability, Michael would soon be cast for the lead role of legendary boxer Mike Tyson in the HBO biopic Tyson which solidified his legitimacy as a dramatic actor in Hollywood. Michael was then cast to play the title character in the movie Spawn which came with the distinction of being the first black superhero in a major motion picture. As white cemented his Hollywood status as a bonafide action star, more diverse roles emerged that allowed him to showcase his physical prowess as well as display his on-screen charisma and comedic ability in such films as Exit Wounds, Undisputed 2, Silver Hawk, Blood & Bone, Black Dynamite and Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married and Why Did I Get Married Too playing opposite Tasha Smith. The two would ignite such on-screen chemistry, they would go on to start together in the long running OWN Network series, For Better or Worse.Having proven himself as an actor, White would make his directorial debut with the action film Never Back Down 2: The Beatdown, in which he also starred. Based on the cult film Black Dynamite which White created and starred, he would go on to write and produce the hit animated television series bearing the same name. He would also win over audiences in a string of films, including Chain of Command, Chocolate City, Skin Trade, and Falcon Rising. He also guest stars in the recurring role of Ben Turner / Bronze Tiger on The CW hit series Arrow. He is currently directing and starring in Sony Pictures third installment of Never Back Down 3: No Surrender, and will also reprise his role as Princeton in the upcoming Chocolate City 2. As a martial artist, in 2013 Michael achieved his 8th black belt from mentor and legendary undefeated kick-boxing champion, Bill "Superfood" Wallace and was honored by Black Belt Magazine as their 2014 Man of the Year. Continuing the legacy of such greats as Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme, Michael is now the #1 martial arts action star in in America. Michael Jai White resides in Los Angeles with his wife, actress Gillian White and their three daughters.ABOUT OUTLAW JOHNNY BLACK, IN THEATERS SEPTEMBER 15thOutlaw Johnny Black, only in theaters on September 15th.
