Transformative Power of Art: Ai Weiwei's Stand for Palestinian Rights and Global Issues. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description: In his recent graphic memoir “ZODIAC: A Graphic Memoir”, the renowned artist Ai Weiwei writes that artists should “ignite stories”, “fight for freedom” and “help us hope.” Over his long and defiant career, he has used his art in a wide variety of media to do just that. His past works such as "Sunflower Seeds" and "Remembering" confronted issues of censorship and human rights abuses in China; in a recent show in London, he asked questions of an AI Chatbot for his project “Ai vs AI”, including “Is there hope for peace?” Earlier this year, he faced criticism for his expressions of support for Palestinian rights and had a show in London canceled. In this wide-ranging conversation with Laura Flanders, they discuss the role of the artist and ask why is “Power so afraid of art and poets?” As attacks on free speech, surveillance and displacement continue to impact so many of us, how do we keep the doors of our minds open to possibility? And how can art and artists help lead transformation? All that, plus a commentary from Laura.“I'm not this kind of very active activist. I'm just being forced to act . . . But I'm proud of doing that because that is the meaning of life, to give dignity to life itself . . .” - Ai Weiwei“The real fear for me is [if] we lost [the] ability to ask the question. We lost our memory, we lost our sense of caring compassion . . .” - Ai Weiwei"We [do] not encourage people to have free thinking and judgment and that is the ground to produce Nazis or hypocrites. And that can come to political disaster . . . We have this kind of censorship because people cannot freely express their feelings.” - Ai WeiweiGuest: Ai Weiwei: Conceptual Artist, Filmmaker & Human Rights Activist; Author, ZODIAC, A Graphic MemoirFull Episode Notes are located HERE. In his recent graphic memoir “ZODIAC: A Graphic Memoir”, the renowned artist Ai Weiwei writes that artists should “ignite stories”, “fight for freedom” and “help us hope.” Over his long and defiant career, he has used his art in a wide variety of media to do just that. We lost our memory, we lost our sense of caring compassion . . .” - Ai Weiwei“We [do] not encourage people to have free thinking and judgment and that is the ground to produce Nazis or hypocrites. And that can come to political disaster . . . We have this kind of censorship because people cannot freely express their feelings.” - Ai WeiweiGuest: Ai Weiwei: Conceptual Artist, Filmmaker & Human Rights Activist; Author, ZODIAC, A Graphic Memoir Full Episode Notes are located HERE. The August mix in recent years (excluding Covid) has become the Suncebeat mix as it's the first mix after the festival. This year marked the last time Suncebeat will be held in Croatia, or the Tisno Gardens at least. It was the fourteenth event which is incredible and shows the quality of the week long soulful house spectacular. It was the quietest in terms of numbers that I've been to and this was my fifth one. What that meant though was the DJ/Punter ratio was awesome. Seemed everywhere you looked legends of the scene were connecting with everyone and were really accessible. The highlights for me included meeting Martin Atjazz and Osunlade (both whom had a huge influence on the c2eMusic sound over the years), grabbing a picture with Osunlade, Spen and Rich Medina, catching up with The Journeymen, Joe Cox and Andy Ward and connecting with Danny T. I was also encouraged to see the youngsters representing, having met the Coughlan Brothers, Ryan and Jay, as well as Noah Herel (yes Ronnie's son) on the Deep Into Soul boat party.I was lucky enough to then catch Noah put down a killer set for Mi-Soul later that night alongside his very proud dad. The pair smashed it with Noah only having a few months of DJing under his belt! Kenny Dope smashed it at the Olive Grove for Terry Hunter's Chosen Few night. It's funny I was always a Louie fan growing up, but more recently Kenny has blown me away everytime I've heard him. I think it says more about my own personal musical journey moving from the more soulful to a deeper more twisted sound. Not to be outdone, Spen put on his own night of magic at the Olive Grove with Dawn Tallman and Aaron K providing a performance to remember together at the end of the night. It was one of those "I was there" moments that you knew was special as it unfolded in front of you.Biggest surprise were Analog Soul out of NY, playing on the Beach Stage on Friday night. I'd never come across them before but there set was amazing. The flow was great, but their tune selection was second to none, at least for my taste and preference anyway. They certainly found a new fan right here.Back to the mix and I have to say it doesn't sound like a regular c2eMusic mix. It's very laid back and chill for the most part. I was worried it might not have enough energy but I can't sit still listening to it. It has a very grown up mature feel to it which feels alien to me (I am after all just a big 48 year old man-child in many ways).I initially wasn't going to release this mix, some of the transitions aren't quite what I'd have liked and I couldn't find a track to end on that brings us back down safely! However, after listening through a couple of times it feels wrong to hold it back when the tunes themselves are cool af. We're thankful for Rich Medina and Chef Kurt Evans promoting Philly's most celebrated traits: arts and activism. International and legendary DJ Rich Medina shares with us his history expressing his heart, soul and activism through music for the last 30 years. Medina also provides the details surrounding Art Basel in Miami, why it's important for the Black arts community and details about Love + Grit On The Road during Miami Art Week. Next up, Evans discusses bringing together food and activism to raise criminal justice reform awareness in America. Featured in major publications like Food & Wine, Bon Appetit, Good Morning America, and Eater, Evans also created the ground-breaking End Mass Incarceration (EMI) dining series which orchestrates dinners themed around the criminal justice system. And if you're looking for something to do in Philly other than drinking, the hosts provide their top things to do.
