It seems that every day I get another reminder of my age. Sometimes it's at the gym trying to keep up with adults 20-25 years younger than me. Sometimes it's a meme about how old people were in movies, or what year certain classic movies about old times would be portraying if they were made today. Or the age of the men who signed the Declaration of Independence. Hint: the biggest majority were younger than me. One today said “when you realize the old timers that trained you are gone and you are now the old guy doing the training.” While that's not entirely true, there are definitely more younger folks in ministry and I feel the pressure of answering things from the “older and wiser” position. While I'm older, I'm not sure I feel wiser. I've spent the last week working in a town called Munford. Most of you have probably never heard of Munford, Alabama. It's a fairly small dot on the map and on your GPS you have to zoom in a little to get it to show up. I love to hunt. I have always loved outdoor sports—from baseball to football to ultimate frisbee and golf. But one of my favorites is bowfishing. For those of you unfamiliar with it, it combines the sport and art of archery with fishing. You have a bow, rigged with a reel and line attached to an arrow. You shoot the fish — where we live it is mostly gar, carp, catfish and buffalo — anything other than game fish like bass and brim. I've bowfished at the gulf and in florida wetlands for stingray, crabs, mullet, and tilapia. It is incredibly fun and challenging at the same time. And for me, the fellowship is even better. It is always with some combination of some of my closest friends, mentors, family, and brothers in Christ. One of the coolest things about bowfishing is 95% of the time it is at night on a boat set up with lights able to penetrate the surface of the water and allow us to see things that most people will never see. Passover was always a reminder of both the bad things of the world and the wonderful ways of God. On one hand the Passover was dark. Sacrifices. Blood on the door frame. A death angel. Darkness that sticks with you for generations. A reminder of the human condition. But at the same time the Passover was a bright light for a people enslaved. It was hope. It was freedom. It was a people getting their life back after years of hurt and pain. And that is the reason it was memorialized. Stories that would be repeated for generations. A memorial meal to help the people reflect on the powerful moment that God delivered them from Egyptian captivity. Songs and scriptures that would be memorized and repeated year after year.
