Why is it that sadness and worry and anger seem to weigh so heavily while memories that are much more joyful and happy and peaceful seem a little harder to recall and seem to weigh much less? It is what psychologists call Negativity Bias. Negativity Bias is an innate psychological tendency to emphasize negative experiences over positive ones. It seems that every day I get another reminder of my age. Sometimes it's at the gym trying to keep up with adults 20-25 years younger than me. Sometimes it's a meme about how old people were in movies, or what year certain classic movies about old times would be portraying if they were made today. Or the age of the men who signed the Declaration of Independence. Hint: the biggest majority were younger than me. One today said “when you realize the old timers that trained you are gone and you are now the old guy doing the training.” While that's not entirely true, there are definitely more younger folks in ministry and I feel the pressure of answering things from the “older and wiser” position. While I'm older, I'm not sure I feel wiser. I've spent the last week working in a town called Munford. Most of you have probably never heard of Munford, Alabama. It's a fairly small dot on the map and on your GPS you have to zoom in a little to get it to show up. It's not far from Oxford which more of you might know simply because of the interstate between Birmingham and Atlanta. So go to benandtravis.com and donate to help kids in need and help fund research for cancer. One of my favorite past times is bowfishing. I consider myself somewhat of an outdoorsman. I like to hike. I love to hunt. I have always loved outdoor sports—from baseball to football to ultimate frisbee and golf. But one of my favorites is bowfishing. For those of you unfamiliar with it, it combines the sport and art of archery with fishing. You have a bow, rigged with a reel and line attached to an arrow. You shoot the fish — where we live it is mostly gar, carp, catfish and buffalo — anything other than game fish like bass and brim. I've bowfished at the gulf and in florida wetlands for stingray, crabs, mullet, and tilapia. It is incredibly fun and challenging at the same time. And for me, the fellowship is even better. It is always with some combination of some of my closest friends, mentors, family, and brothers in Christ. One of the coolest things about bowfishing is 95% of the time it is at night on a boat set up with lights able to penetrate the surface of the water and allow us to see things that most people will never see.
