Interview by Kris PetersMelbourne rock outfit Shotgun Mistress have been riding the wave of their most recent album, Kings Of The Revolution ever since it was released last June.It was a strong, powerful and infectious collection of hard rock tunes that came as close as you could probably get to the exhilarating live experience of catching Shotgun Mistress on stage, opening the door for shows with Dirty Honey, Slaughter, The Poor, Mammal and The Midnight Devils as well as taking the band to Japan. After such an exhausting 8 month period you could forgive Shotgun Mistress for putting their feet up for a spell, but that's not the case. Instead, they are hitting the road again through April in support of legendary US rockers Winger - touring Australia for the first and last time with the full original line up.HEAVY tracked down enigmatic frontman Glenn Patrick to find out more."It is going to be absolutely amazing," he enthused. "We're absolutely honoured to be a part of it. We've taken a bit of hiatus for a couple of months since our album launch back end of last year and building up to this tour."We point out that supporting Winger is a pretty fair reason for breaking the hiatus."It was quite short-lived," Patrick laughed. "We had another tour that we were going to be doing with Mike Tramp in January which fell through, but instead of that, we got Winger, so we're super happy, because Winger, I think, is more where we sit musically as well."In the full interview, we discuss Shotgun Mistress' tour with Winger, focusing on the excitement of the original line up's return. They expressed gratitude for local support and discussed the dual responsibilities of a support act, including warming up the crowd and ensuring a smooth performance. Glenn emphasized the importance of showmanship and audience engagement, while also reflecting on the challenges of performing for new audiences. We shared insights into their music, with Glenn noting key tracks like Shot Down and Mary Jane for fans to listen to ahead of the tour. He also mentioned the positive reception of their second album, Kings of the Revolution, and the band's intention to explore new musical directions while maintaining their unique sound and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersMelbourne rock outfit Shotgun Mistress arrived on the scene with a bullet following the 2021 release of their self-titled debut album that reinforced all known conceptions about the band, based purely on the high-octane suggestiveness of the name alone. Here was a band that bled rock and roll rather than one jumping on the back of an institution that oozes charm, strength and charisma. In the world of rock and hard rock such pretenders are generally found wanting before a round of shots can be fired in anger, but on the rare occasions that a band not only matches the sonic intensity of their album on the live arena but rather elevates the bar infinitely higher… well, you just know. Not that there were many doubters out there, but with Shotgun Mistress facing the prospect of following up a banger of an album with an even bigger banger - not an easy thing to do on a sophomore release - the lads from South of the border just rolled their sleeves up and did what they do best.Knock that shit right the fuck out of the park.Released just last Friday, album number two, Kings Of The Revolution is not merely just more of the same from Shotgun Mistress. It is a statement of intent laced with an air of almost arrogance that pushes the doors open even wider for what can only be an even more exciting future for the band.HEAVY sat down with frontman Glenn Patrick and drummer 'Diamond' Dave Lee direct from the freezing cold of Melbourne and on the night of release to gauge their enthusiasm."We're stoked," Glenn started to reply."We're fucken stoked," Dave corrected."It's been a long time coming," Glenn continued, "and we've had this album in our back pocket for a long time. Half the album was already written before the first one was even released. So it's definitely been a while, but it's good to finally…""Release it to the world," Dave finished. We ask the boys if Kings Of The Revolution is what fans would expect musically from the band."I'd like to think so," Glenn measured. "I'd like to think it's something that's pretty similar to what people would relate to. It's definitely a step-up for us as far as the writing ability. The first album was a bit of a tester to see how we worked together, so this one is something that came a lot easier.""A lot quicker," Dave added."The actual production of the tracks is good and there's definitely a lot of different… influences from this album compared to the first one," Glenn chimed in. "Things like early day Aerosmith and ZZ Top. There's a lot more variety in this one.""It sort of suits everybody, instead of just writing to the one content," Dave concluded. In the full interview the boys talk about the three singles released and how they represent the whole album, translating the live energy to recordings, the bold statement proclaimed by the album title, what songs to listen to by way as an introduction to Shotgun Mistress, their upcoming tour of Japan, hometown shows and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Interview by Kris PetersAussie rock outfit Shotgun Mistress exploded out of the blocks with their debut self-titled album in 2021, showcasing an old-school approach to songwriting that saw them instantly branded amongst rising bands to keep an ear out for.Spawning a string of chart-topping singles such as No Friend Of Mine, Save Me From Myself, Glorious Machine, Collide and Bleed Me Out, it seemed Australian rock had finally found a fresh talent to proudly call their own.Following a highly successful 2023 which saw Shotgun Mistress complete sold-out national tours with Electric Mary and Palace Of The King, the boys decided to take stock and capitalise on their continued momentum with album number two, always considered the making or breaking of any band. With the new album Kings Of The Revolution in the can and planned for a June release, Shotgun Mistress have unveiled the first taste of what to expect with the hard-hitting single Jude Judas, just ahead of their national tour as part of GlamFest 2024 which also features Slaughter, Lynch Mob, H.E.A.T, Janet Gardner and plenty more.HEAVY sat down with frontman Glenn Patrick to dive deeper into Shotgun Mistress' new music and their exciting next few months."The track is the best single from the second album," Patrick declared about Jude Judas. "The first album is always going to test the waters and see what it's like and how we all work together as a band family and democracy, so the second album was a good chance to spread our wings knowing how everyone works. The recording process was ten times easier, and we all had a good time working together. It only took almost 40 years to find a band I actually get along with (laughs). The song itself is typical, the word Judas obviously biblical in the fact you've got a friend who took advantage of you in a situation. It pays homage to a mate of mine who has gone through a bit of shit, but he's on the up and up, so this goes out to him."We press Patrick as to why the band chose Jude Judas as the first single and representation of the new album."It was tough," he conceded. "There's a couple of really good standout ones. The second single, I absolutely love, which is going to be coming out shortly after this one. And even the third one is an amazing song, which we actually got Rusty from Electric Mary in to do some vocals. That's a really, really good track, and that one is called Mary Jane. It's a fitting name as well (laughs)."In the full interview, Glenn talks more about Jude Judas, the remainder of the album and what to expect, their goals going into the recording process and if they were achieved, the upcoming Glamfest tour and their part in it, the high number of Australian bands on the bill and how important that is for Australian music, Shotgun Mistress' live show and what to expect, what sorts of things they learned as a band touring with Aussie heavyweights like Electric Mary, their own headline tour later this year and more.
Today's episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. The self-help book industry alone is expected to grow from $10.5 billion annually to $15 billion by 2025. Of course, with that kinda dough floating around, a raging demand for personal growth has led to a plethora of tools aimed at achieving it. Unfortunately, there are people that seek to take advantage of this, leading to dangerous—or even deadly—consequences. When Kirby Brown was only 38 years old, a man named James Arthur Ray pushed her to stick out an incredibly hot sweat lodge session in Sedona, Arizona. A self-proclaimed “guru,” Ray allegedly urged participants to disregard their physical discomfort, even ignoring their pleas for help. Tragically, Brown and two other individuals lost their lives during the hellish experience. On today's episode, we're joined by two guests: Jean Brown, who is Kirby's sister and the co-author of The Sweet Life Lived, a memoir she wrote with her mother about what happened to Kirby and its larger implications for the self-help industry. Joining her is Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle, a psychologist who has teamed up with Jean to create the SEEK SAFELY non-profit org and podcast, both aimed at passing legislation within the self-help industry to prevent abuse in the future. You can follow Dr. Doyle on Instagram, Facebook, and X. You can follow Jean Brown on Instagram and X. You can follow SEEK SAFELY on Instagram, Facebook, and X. Jean is a writer and work-from-home-mom to two young children. She has Bachelor's degrees in political science and writing from Loyola University Maryland, and a Master's in Public Policy and Public Administration from Concordia University in Montreal. In the second Memory Lane discussion, I speak with Glenn Patrick Juday, Professor Emeritus of Forest Ecology at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. To say Glenn is an ecologist understates the breadth of his interests. He is also something of a citizen scientist.
For the first time this podcast went fully international with our first guest from the other side of the world as I was joined on the phone by Shotgun Mistress frontman, Glenn Patrick. We discussed the making of their upcoming debut album, the band’s first single, their plans to tour the UK and I may have mentioned Dave Grohl again (he started it!)

He plays live in the studio, and introduces their 2nd, much anticipated single "Black Mass". This very song smashed into the Australian iTunes Rock charts at number 9.
