Who Is Luigi Mangione's Family? Luigi Mangione's arrest in December 2024 sent shockwaves through Maryland's close-knit community. Born on May 6, 1998, Luigi grew up in Towson, Maryland, as the only son of Louis and Kathleen Mangione, a family whose name carries significant weight in Baltimore. With roots deeply embedded in Italian-American heritage, the Mangiones rose from humble beginnings to become a cornerstone of Maryland's business and philanthropic scene. Now, that legacy is under scrutiny as their son stands accused of the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Luigi's story cannot be fully understood without exploring the life of his grandfather, Nicholas Mangione. Born to Sicilian immigrants in Baltimore's Little Italy, Nicholas embodied the American dream. Through sheer grit and determination, he built a diversified empire that spanned real estate, healthcare, and media. His portfolio included Lorien Health Services, a chain of nursing homes, and ownership of Baltimore's conservative talk radio station WCBM. Beyond business, Nicholas's philanthropy left an indelible mark on institutions such as the Greater Baltimore Medical Center and Loyola University Maryland. Nicholas's passing in 2008 left the family empire in the capable hands of his son, Louis Mangione. Under Louis's leadership, the Mangione name continued to thrive, expanding Turf Valley Resort, managing Hayfields Country Club, and overseeing numerous commercial ventures. However, the recent events surrounding his son Luigi have cast a shadow over the family's once-pristine reputation. Louis Mangione, born in 1953, was the second of ten children. From a young age, he was immersed in the family business, learning the intricacies of real estate development and management. After earning his degree, Louis took over the family's operations, solidifying their position as one of Maryland's most influential families. His wife, Kathleen, brought a different yet equally impactful dimension to the family's legacy. Kathleen Zannino Mangione, a woman of Italian-American descent, grew up in Baltimore. With a background in business management and computer education, she later transitioned into the tourism industry, founding KZM Boutique Travel. Her company specialized in curated travel experiences, particularly to Italy, blending her professional acumen with her cultural heritage. Kathleen's active involvement in cultural organizations further cemented the family's standing in the community. Together, Louis and Kathleen raised three children: MariaSanta, Luciana, and Luigi. MariaSanta pursued a career in medicine, while Luciana found her passion in visual arts. Luigi, the youngest, showed early promise in academics, graduating as valedictorian from the prestigious Gilman School in 2016 before earning dual degrees in computer engineering and artificial intelligence from the University of Pennsylvania. Luigi's life seemed destined for success. With a brilliant academic record and a keen interest in technology, he appeared poised to carry the Mangione legacy into the modern age. But beneath the surface, cracks began to form. In July 2023, Luigi underwent spinal fusion surgery to address spondylolisthesis, a condition that had caused him significant discomfort. The recovery process was grueling, both physically and mentally. Friends and family noticed a shift in Luigi's demeanor. He became withdrawn, limiting his social interactions and eventually disappearing from social media altogether by the summer of 2024. This period of isolation culminated in November 2024, when Kathleen reported Luigi missing. Believing he was living and working in San Francisco, the family's concern grew as weeks passed with no contact. On December 9, Luigi was apprehended in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in connection with the murder of Brian Thompson, leaving his family and community in stunned disbelief. The arrest of Luigi Mangione sent ripples through the tight-knit Baltimore community. The Mangione family, known for their charitable contributions and community involvement, found themselves thrust into an unfamiliar and unwelcome spotlight. In a public statement, Louis and Kathleen expressed their devastation, requesting privacy and prayers for all affected parties. The revelation that Luigi might lose a potential $100 million inheritance due to legal stipulations excluding felons from benefitting only deepened the family's anguish. Despite the challenges, the Mangiones have vowed to support their son through the legal process, maintaining his innocence until proven guilty. For decades, the Mangione name was synonymous with success and generosity. From their early beginnings in Little Italy to their current status as pillars of the community, the family's journey has been one of resilience and growth. Yet, the events of December 2024 have introduced an unprecedented chapter to their storied history, one that intertwines personal tragedy with public scrutiny. As the legal proceedings against Luigi unfold, the Mangione family must confront not only the potential loss of their son but also the impact on a legacy built over generations. The community watches closely, torn between their admiration for the family's contributions and the gravity of the allegations against Luigi. Whatever the outcome, the Mangiones' journey serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of reputation and the complexities of familial bonds. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? One of the coolest sports stories of the young new year was Golden State Warrior Pat Spencer being guarded by his younger brother, Memphis Grizzlies rookie Cam Spencer, in a game on Saturday, Jan. 4. It was the latest crescendo of a pair of incredible athlete journeys that were heavily influenced on the lacrosse fields at Boys' Latin (Md.) and Loyola University Maryland. After winning the Tewaaraton Award in 2019, Spencer played a year of basketball at Northwestern and has since worked his way through the NBA G-League to sign a two-way contract with the Warriors. Meanwhile, Cam — who also played lacrosse for the Lakers — started his college basketball career at Loyola, then transferred to Rutgers before finishing his career as a national champion with UConn in April. He was selected with the 53rd overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft and made his debut with the Grizz in November while also logging minutes (and success) with the G-League Hustle. Though the Spencers' focus is squarely on maximizing their NBA dreams, they also have an eye on life after basketball, which is why they've invested in a startup called Chillshark. Founded by Pat's BL teammate Keegan O'Connor, a 2014 Under Armour All-American who played at Maryland and High Point, Chillshark is a device that can convert any device into a cold plunge. Recorded on Dec. 3, Pat, Cam and Keegan joined IL's Terry Foy to discuss their journey to that point, as well as the merits of cold therapy and how O'Connor plans to go about building the business.

Taylor has been in the pool since age 4, when her mom (a swim coach) and older sister (also a swimmer) first introduced her to the water. A D1 recruit at Loyola University Maryland, Taylor was gearing up to make a splash at the collegiate level. She was then diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a condition characterized by joint pain, loose joints, and hypermobility. According to Taylor, this period of her life was both physically and emotionally excruciating. She shares how she needed to "mourn the life [I] lost but also realize that [I] gained a new life." Hearing how important swimming was to her, Taylor's physical therapist encouraged her to return to the water. One day when at the Loyola pool, the swim coach who recruited her suggested Taylor explore para swimming. This recommendation changed Taylor's life. Flash forward to today and Taylor is a 2x S10 American Record Holder and 7x Parapan Games medalist. As Taylor looks to the future, she hopes to see a world in which women are "valued like the men." She also shares how she hopes to become a Mom and how "women can be strong and powerful" while also at the top of their sport. ------ Flame Bearers is the world's first media and production company specifically illuminating the unsung stories of resilient women Olympians & Paralympians. This is a conversation about racism and the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola. Put more precisely, this is a conversation about how the Spiritual Exercises might better form us to understand and push back against the repercussions of racism in America. The question that frames this conversation is one that comes from the global Society of Jesus. At the last General Congregation—GC 36—when Jesuits from around the world gathered to elect a new superior general and examine the most pressing issues facing our world today, this question was raised: Why do the Exercises not change us as deeply as we should hope? In short, how does injustice and racism and violent persist, even after so many of us have made the Exercises? The Exercises, after all, are meant to change our hearts and minds, to help us better understand God and who God desires that we be with and through community. This question is at the heat of a new book from Liturgical Press. It's called “Praying for Freedom: Racism and Ignatian Spirituality in America.” It's a collection of essays and reflections that attempt to wrestle with this question and try to envision how we might build a more just and compassionate society. We have three guests today. Dr. Laurie Cassidy, the editor of the anthology, currently teaches in the Christian Spirituality program at Creighton University. She is an award-winning author and editor, and has been engaged in the ministry of spiritual direction for more than 30 years. Our two other guests, Elise Gower and Justin White, both contributed chapters to this book, both reflecting on their own experiences of a retreat called “The God of Us All: Praying with Black Spirituality.” They both share with us personal and powerful insights into their own prayer life. Elise has an extensive background in Ignatian spirituality, higher education and leadership, having served as associate director of Contemplative Leaders in Action—a formation program for young adults—and at Loyola University Maryland in the offices of Campus Ministry and the Center for Community Service and Justice, and more. Justin White has a long career in Jesuit education, having taught theology for 8 years at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Baltimore and having held several roles at Loyola Blakefield, most recently as a counselor for middle school students. If you have ever prayed through the Spiritual Exercises or if that's something you hope to do, this conversation will add a helpful frame to your prayer and challenge you to examine those places in our lives where we are resistant to God's love—those places where we are not free. Our prayer today is one of freedom—as we begin this conversation, let us pray that we all may recognize those places of unfreedom in our lives, and take the necessary steps to step beyond those obstacles. https://litpress.org/Products/6791/Praying-for-Freedom
Preaching for the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Ariell Watson Simon offers a reflection on God meeting us in our spiritual hunger: "That feeling of holy discontent doesn't mean that yesterday's prayer didn't work; it means that God is building a relationship of trust with you. Just like the Israelites' physical hunger kept them looking to the heavens for manna, our spiritual hunger turns us toward God. Hunger grounds us in the everyday. It's in this everyday hunger that God will meet us, giving us this day – each day – our daily bread." Ariell Simon, M.Div. is a healthcare chaplain who lives, writes, and serves in central Missouri. Ariell was raised in the evangelical church, which instilled in her the value of scripture and the importance of lay ministry. After falling in love with Catholic Social Teaching as an undergraduate student at Loyola University Maryland, she entered the Catholic Church in 2011. Ariell received a Masters of Divinity from Boston College School of Theology and Ministry in 2018. She completed her chaplain residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, focusing on psychiatry and spiritual care. Visit www.catholicwomenpreach.org/preaching/08042024 to learn more about Ariell, to read her preaching text, and for more preaching from Catholic women.
Today on Scope Conditions: college dorms shed light on where group culture comes from and how it molds us.At Harry Potter's alma mater, each new student is assigned to a House that aligns with their true character. The mystical Sorting Hat takes the courageous ones and sorts them into House Gryffindor, while the studious know-it-alls go to Ravenclaw. The Sorting Hat may be fiction, but it's actually a lot like life. Much of the social world works this way: whether by assignment or by self-selection, people often end up in social environments that already fit with their pre-existing beliefs and traits. For social scientists, what's often called homophily – this tendency for like to attract like – can make it difficult to study the impact of social context itself. Do people tend to believe and act like those around them because they're influenced by their surroundings, or because they're drawn to places that already fit their pre-existing characteristics? Our guest today, Dr. Joan Ricart-Huguet, found a real-world social setting that helps him untangle these possibilities. At East Africa's oldest institution of higher education, Makerere University in Uganda, incoming students have for decades been allocated to their residence halls by lottery, rather than by personality type. For Joan, Makerere's randomly assigned dorms have been the perfect laboratory for studying how the cultural characteristics of a social organization arise, endure, and shape people's beliefs and habits over time. Joan is an assistant professor of political science at Loyola University Maryland, and we talk with him about a pair of recent articles he wrote on cultural emergence, persistence, and transmission. Joan tells us about the months of in-depth interviews and immersive fieldwork he conducted on the Makerere campus as well as the natural experiment afforded by random residential assignment that allowed him to test alternative theories of cultural differentiation, reproduction, and impact. For example, Joan tells us the stories of how distinct hall cultures emerged historically at Makerere – how Livingston Hall came to be known as the residence of respectful gentlemen while Lumumba Hall earned a reputation for rowdy activism. And we learn about the short- and long-term causal effects of these distinct hall cultures on the young adults assigned by chance to live within them.Works cited in this episode:Geertz, C. 1973. Setting and Scoring Financial Goals is a basic guide for any soccer fan who wants to understand personal finance better. The consistent sports metaphor explains intimidating concepts such as "small cap stocks" with ease for anyone who understands "the beautiful game." Although it may seem complex, finance is simply a game like any other with players, strategies, and results. In order to win the game, it's necessary first to understand it and this book is a great first step!Fill Your Boots was Pete Huryk's first book. Intended for high school-age soccer players, it is filled with life lessons that overlap with the game of soccer. The book can be read as a whole or read section by section depending on the needs of the individual. In his sophomore work, Soccer Life Balance, Pete took a more methodical approach to individual achievement. Using facets of the game as metaphors for different aspects of life and their systematic improvement, Soccer Life Balance is a resource manual for taking steps toward being a better version of one's self.Chris Schaefer is a senior advisor at a boutique wealth management firm based outside of Washington, D.C. with over 20 years of experience. Today's episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. The self-help book industry alone is expected to grow from $10.5 billion annually to $15 billion by 2025. Of course, with that kinda dough floating around, a raging demand for personal growth has led to a plethora of tools aimed at achieving it. Unfortunately, there are people that seek to take advantage of this, leading to dangerous—or even deadly—consequences. When Kirby Brown was only 38 years old, a man named James Arthur Ray pushed her to stick out an incredibly hot sweat lodge session in Sedona, Arizona. A self-proclaimed “guru,” Ray allegedly urged participants to disregard their physical discomfort, even ignoring their pleas for help. Tragically, Brown and two other individuals lost their lives during the hellish experience. On today's episode, we're joined by two guests: Jean Brown, who is Kirby's sister and the co-author of The Sweet Life Lived, a memoir she wrote with her mother about what happened to Kirby and its larger implications for the self-help industry. Joining her is Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle, a psychologist who has teamed up with Jean to create the SEEK SAFELY non-profit org and podcast, both aimed at passing legislation within the self-help industry to prevent abuse in the future. You can follow Dr. Doyle on Instagram, Facebook, and X. You can follow Jean Brown on Instagram and X. You can follow SEEK SAFELY on Instagram, Facebook, and X. On episode 111, I welcome Swami Nityananda. As Dr. Juniper Ellis, she is Professor of English at Loyola University Maryland. As Swami, she is the spiritual teacher and spiritual leader at Awake Yoga Meditation, a meditation community located physically in Baltimore that reaches listeners in many geographical areas.Highlights: 1. Each human has a natural connectedness – to find yours, ask yourself where do you feel alive, at peace, calm?2. It is simple to connect to your natural state of peace and calm, if you will pause long enough to remember (it is always with you…and you already know).3. Connect with this pure energy first thing in the morning by setting an intention “I am….” (can you take a moment to do this before you look at your phone?) 4. Tapping into this way of being will give you access to your intuition and help you navigate your day in a joyful way – step-by-step, choice-by-choice. Moment-by-moment.5. This really is simple – yes, just a few minutes will make a difference!6. Taking a few minutes in the morning and after work is a huge investment in your well-being (and whatever time you spend connecting with yourself you will get back in spades).7. When life gets challenging, these simple practices will allow you to “shake off” stress like a duck shakes off drops of water and give you the opportunity to respond (rather than react).8. When you take a few minutes to refresh and reset you improve every aspect of your life because you have access to your best self.9. Use technology in a way that helps you connect with your intention (and if they aren't helping you, choose to use them in a different way); some ideas: sleep with your phone in another room, silence it, put it face side down, pick a screen saver that will remind you to breathe, write a positive message on your bathroom mirror, use a mindfulness bell app, etc. More ideas here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1547113/1183239810. Pick a daily intention that will assist you move through your day – pick a word (calm, clarity, peace) and breath into this word. 11. We have the ability to create positive new pathways in our brain – things like picking an intention and focusing on that each day, simple yoga poses, taking deep breaths, will change your nervous system.12. Use YouTube to search for tools that will help you find methods that resonate with you (personally, I love Yoga with Adriene). 13. Trust. Trust yourself, your brilliance, the light within you, your own awareness and ENJOY giving yourself the gift of connection to the version of your best self. If you follow me on instagram @devdebrief, you saw that I went out to Annapolis in March. There, I met the US Navy development team and learned about their approach to fundraising. Mike Hoffman is an amazing leader who is growing programs, posting new positions, and argues teams are best built in person. Mike joined the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation in March 2013 and currently serves on the Foundation's senior leadership team as the Vice President, Development. Mike began his tenure at Navy as a Major Gifts Officer and grew into a series of roles with increasing responsibility before taking the VP position last year. As the Naval Academy Foundation builds out a team in anticipation of their next campaign, Mike will lead a staff of 15 on the Development team, which includes the Regional Development program, which is comprised of the organization's major gifts and high-end leadership annual giving initiatives, and the Planned Giving program. In his role, he also works closely with the Foundation's EVP, Board of Directors and other organizational leaders to play a central role in campaign planning and execution. Additionally, Mike manages a portfolio of top donors across the country with a focus on principal gifts. Since 2004, Mike has worked in education at both the independent school and higher education levels, with most of that experience in development positions. Prior to joining the Foundation, Mike was at Johns Hopkins University in their Regional and International Programs development office. Mike graduated from Loyola University Maryland with a Bachelor of Arts in political science. He lives in Annapolis with his wife and three children. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/devdebrief/support
