This is nothing new! China has been known to use spy balloons as part of its surveillance and intelligence-gathering efforts. These balloons are equipped with various types of monitoring equipment, including cameras, microphones, and other sensors, and can be used to gather information from a distance. The use of spy balloons in China has been criticized by some for violating privacy and human rights, as well as for being a potential security threat. It's important to note that not all of China's use of spy balloons is necessarily malicious, and that some applications, such as monitoring environmental conditions or supporting disaster response efforts, can have positive outcomes. A total of four high-flying, balloon-like objects have been shot down by US fighter jets this month. Officials have still not said where three of them came from.The United States claims the first one was a Chinese surveillance balloon, which China denies. But American officials have made no definitive statement as to what the other three could be, nor has anyone come forward to claim ownership. On Friday, February 10, 2023, a dramatic series of events began to unfold involving the shoot-down of what the Pentagon characterized as an "object" over northeastern Alaska. The White House was quick to comment on the incident, and within just hours, a second object was taken down over Canada, followed by a third object over Lake Huron on Sunday. According to a Pentagon memo sent to lawmakers, the unidentified object shot down in Canadian airspace on Saturday appeared to be a “small, metallic balloon” that crossed near “U.S. sensitive sites.” Members of Congress want more information after a total of three unidentified objects were shot down in just three days. The United States military downed three more unidentified flying objects, though the Biden administration said it had no indication that the objects were intended for surveillance.
