Interview by Kris PetersMelbourne rock outfit Shotgun Mistress have been riding the wave of their most recent album, Kings Of The Revolution ever since it was released last June.It was a strong, powerful and infectious collection of hard rock tunes that came as close as you could probably get to the exhilarating live experience of catching Shotgun Mistress on stage, opening the door for shows with Dirty Honey, Slaughter, The Poor, Mammal and The Midnight Devils as well as taking the band to Japan. After such an exhausting 8 month period you could forgive Shotgun Mistress for putting their feet up for a spell, but that's not the case. Instead, they are hitting the road again through April in support of legendary US rockers Winger - touring Australia for the first and last time with the full original line up.HEAVY tracked down enigmatic frontman Glenn Patrick to find out more."It is going to be absolutely amazing," he enthused. "We're absolutely honoured to be a part of it. We've taken a bit of hiatus for a couple of months since our album launch back end of last year and building up to this tour."We point out that supporting Winger is a pretty fair reason for breaking the hiatus."It was quite short-lived," Patrick laughed. "We had another tour that we were going to be doing with Mike Tramp in January which fell through, but instead of that, we got Winger, so we're super happy, because Winger, I think, is more where we sit musically as well."In the full interview, we discuss Shotgun Mistress' tour with Winger, focusing on the excitement of the original line up's return. They expressed gratitude for local support and discussed the dual responsibilities of a support act, including warming up the crowd and ensuring a smooth performance. Glenn emphasized the importance of showmanship and audience engagement, while also reflecting on the challenges of performing for new audiences. We shared insights into their music, with Glenn noting key tracks like Shot Down and Mary Jane for fans to listen to ahead of the tour. He also mentioned the positive reception of their second album, Kings of the Revolution, and the band's intention to explore new musical directions while maintaining their unique sound and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Sonic Wounds With KAOSPHERE

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersKaosphere burst onto the Gold Coast metal scene in 2015, bringing with them a wave of brutality seldom heard on the Glitter Strip. After slugging it out at local venues despite not playing a brand of music acceptable to the general population, Kaosphere steadily began building a fiercely loyal and ever-growing fan base that consumed the band's first musical offering in the form of Forsaking Shadows in 2017. As the Brisbane/Gold Coast heavy metal scene and community grew, so did Kaosphere, relishing the opportunities to spread their sonic tirade further at every opportunity. They quickly became the unofficial metal representatives of South East Queensland, and capitalised on that momentum with increasingly hostile live performances that represented their particular brand of heavy music.Last year saw Kaosphere break into more of a mainstream market with a support slot to touring LA glam metal band The Midnight Devils as well as a featured slot at Wallapalooza 2023 which also presented COG, Butterfingers and 28 Days. But it is here and now where Kaosphere are preparing to make their ultimate stand with the release on May 3 of their debut album In Scars We Trust. With three crushing singles already unleashed on the public, In Scars We Trust is shaping to be a pivotal release in the career of Kaosphere, with the whole band joining HEAVY on the eve of its release to run through it more, starting with how it feels to have the album finally coming out."Relieved," vocalist Ricci Dyer began. "Looking forward to it. It's been a lot of hard work gone into it, and now it's time to chill back and get to see the fruits of our labour.""It's been over two years in the making," added drummer Sam Phillips. "A lot of build-up and a lot of work."So far Kaosphere has released the singles Chainbreaker, May I and War Cry, so are those three tracks a good sonic representation of what to expect?"Sort of," Dyer measured. "These's still a lot of groovy tracks on the album, and they all have their differences. Obviously, our flavour is still there engrained in it, but there is a lot of difference in some of those songs.""I think that's mainly because we actually wrote the whole album itself as a whole pile of singles," bass player Leon Friis chimed in. "So we basically went into the studio and would write and record one song over one month or two months and then finish that and go to a new one, and we just worked our way through it like that. We occasionally went back and rerecorded a couple of the songs and spruced them up a bit more."In the full interview, the band members further discussed the album release and plans for showcasing gigs in Brisbane and Gold Coast. The team discussed the musical evolution showcased in their new album, In Scars We Trust, highlighting the diverse influences and dynamic nature of the songs. They also discussed the introduction of clean vocals and the positive reception of the new material during live performances. They also spoke around the release of the new single Bring Out The Dead and its music video, with the boys providing insights into the song's inspiration and the creative process behind the video. The team discussed their plans to release more singles as visualizers and create additional music videos for certain tracks from the album. The band delved into the symbolism behind the album cover art, which represents resilience and strength, and mentioned the special pressings with artwork for merchandise. The conversation revolved around Kaosphere's upcoming shows, with a focus on the diverse range of performances lined up, including a free entry show at Tribe Clubhouse, two shows with Melbourne death metal outfit Miruthan, a memorial show, and a festival at the Brightside.

Echoes Of The Future With MAT ROBINS From CICADASTONE

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 11, 2024 16:12

Interview by Kris PetersRising from the ashes of the grunge era, Melbourne rock outfit Cicadastone have spent just over ten years refining their sound amid a musical revolution that saw their style of music shunned from mainstream darlings to backseat troublemakers.Following their 2016 debut Chance Collide, Cicadastone found strength in the fact that although grunge-infused rock was generally on the outer, people started gravitating towards their version of it. With more than a passing nod to some of the heavyweights of that musical movement, Cicadastone quickly set about sprinkling their own DNA into the mix and by 2020's Cold Chamber their efforts in bringing together music from all corners of the rock spectrum were beginning to be noticed. For their third, and most decisive album to date, Cicadastone have signed with new label XMusic and are obviously enjoying the freedom to allow their natural creativity to dictate the sonic balance of their music. The result is Future Echoes - out May 31 -, an album that draws from both previous albums, but also shows Cicadastone's musical growth and diversity like never before. The band last week dropped lead single In The Crossfire, a meaty slab of rock goodness that offers a glimpse inside Future Echoes while only scratching at the surface.HEAVY sat down with vocalist Mat Robins to find out more, starting with In The Crossfire."It's just one of these riffs that I had lying around for a long time and I couldn't do anything with it," he began. "And then one day it all happened in half an hour. I bashed the song together and jotted down the lyrics and found my focus. It all came together really fast, and we demoed the song, and it was the last song that we wrote for the record. But it's probably the most radio-friendly rock single we've got, so it worked out pretty good."We ask why the band chose In The Crossfire as the first single."I just think it's the most obvious, forthright song," he shrugged. "It's got the pace - we're predominantly a band that doesn't push pace. We love our sludgy, slow riffs (laughs). The label were eager to push the faster songs, so it was an obvious choice."In the full interview, Mat talks more about In The Crossfire, Future Echoes as a whole, what they were going for musically with it, the press release claims that it is Cicadastone's biggest statement yet, how it is a new chapter in the band's history, signing to XMusic and what it means for the band moving forward, how Cicadastone have grown musically over the three albums, their upcoming Stay Gold gig with The Midnight Devils and more.

Interview by Kris PetersGlam or "hair" metal as it has been dubbed is a strange beast. Those who like it, LOVE it, but seldom do you come across anyone who sits on the fence.A large part of that is the stereotypical sounds that most bands of the genre feel obligated to gravitate towards, meaning often such bands sound the same and compete for supremacy based more on looks than image. That's my take on it anyway. I'm in the section of people who love the music too, so don't start...Every so often a band comes into the genre with a daring edge to their music that elevates them beyond the realms of another glam metal band, forcing their way into your musical psyche with an air of indifference and rebelliousness that is honest and sincere. They may look the part and dress the part, and, to a certain extent, play the part but you can sense something more sinister simmering below the surface with an axe to grind. That band for now is US rockers The Midnight Devils who are on the cusp of their first ever trip to Australia to support the legendary Donnie Vie, original singer from Enuff Z Nuff, later this month. In an unusual turn of events, The Midnight Devils recently completed their first international tour in support of the current version of Enuff Z Nuff, with vocalist Chip Z Nuff also working on their most recent album Beg For It.HEAVY spoke with frontman Sam Spade earlier this week to gauge his excitement levels."We are ready to party," he enthused. "There's only one way to rock and it's Down Under baby. We're coming for you Australia! We are beyond excited. It doesn't even begin to touch the feelings that are running through us right now as we get ready."With this being the first chance Australian audiences will have to experience The Midnight Devils live we ask Spade what to expect."There is no typical show," he smiled. "We have an idea of what we're going to do. Going into every show we don't write set lists, we don't play tracks, we don't do anything. It's all about feel and the energy coming off the crowd. You can better believe that we're gonna bring it. It's gonna be make up clagged glitter, rubber, lipstick smeared insanity from the get-go, and I'm telling you it's not just on-stage. It's off stage as well, so prepare yourselves! You can expect loud screaming and excitement all around."In the full interview, Sam talks more about coming to Australia, what he is expecting, how daunting it is travelling to the other side of the world to play for the first time, what he knows of Vie and playing with him, his relationship with Chip Z Nuff, their new single Sound Of Domination and the raunchy film clip recorded live at the Whisky A-Go-Go, how they were received in Europe, being part of the glam rock scene, the rockier nature of their new music, upcoming tours, a new album and more.

Glam rock is back ladies and gentlemen, and it has a new name. The Midnight Devils.Described as a glam, slam, boogie woogie rock and roll band, The Midnight Devils have been carving up the Sunset Strip for a number of years now, taking ass and kicking names the whole time.Following the succes of their debut album Something Bigger, The Midnight Devils enjoyed a renewed wave of success, taking glam rock into the homes and ears of a new generation of fans still satisfied with the Golden Era of glam. With the recently released follow up Never Beg For It - produced by the legendary Chip Z'Nuff from Enuff Z'Nuff - The Midnight Deviils have promised to redefine the way the world listens to glam metal, taking it to the next level in the process.Bass player/vocalist Sam Spade joined HEAVY to talk about the album."The response has been overwhelming," he smiled. "The album was produced by Chip Z'Nuff and released under Pavement Entertainment so it's our first official release on a major label, and the response has been overwhelming. The single Highway 69 has been getting love all over the world so the record label is happy. We released a video and a single for Working For The Weekend, a Loverboy cover, and people just love it. It's funny, it's a blast, it's a party. It's exactly what rock and roll is supposed to be."The title is pretty self explanitory, but could also be directed at a number of different situations. The only way to know for sure is to ask."It's a really tongue in cheek kind of thing," Spade laughed, "but let me tell you the title actually came... We were sitting there hanging around with Chip, recording the record before we even decided on a name, and he's sitting there smoking a joint - and it's seven papers long - and he's like bro, you need to tell these people, tell them you've got a record coming out on a national label, you've got a world tour in the books, let me tell you one thing you never do. You never beg for it bro, tell her that."In the full interview, Sam talks more about Never Beg For It, the musicality of the album, runs through a few of the tracks and explains the story behind them, working with Chip, what he brought to the sound, the new age of glam metal, coming to Australia and more.

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 29, 2021 17:50

The Midnight Devils are the latest in a long line of bands that have gravitated to the glam rock side of metal, embracing the music and image of a time gone by and bringing it into the modern age.Playing what has been dubbed high energy slam boogie woogie rock and roll, The Midnight Devils are brash, confident, and talented enough to possibly spearhead the revival of a genre that appeared to be in its death throes with the departure of Motley Crue. With the bands latest album under wraps, vocalist and bass player Sam Spade sat down for a casual one on one with HEAVY earlier this week."The Midnight Devils are a...,” he measured, “I wanna say the new generation; the new wave of glam rock. We are a three-piece boogie woogie rock and roll band that has been touring constantly for 2.5 years now. We put out our first record in 2018 and everything is DIY, very punk rock but it's also very glam and very over the top. It's a party and we dabble in a lot of bands that people grew up on. My favourite band is KISS and we draw a lot of influences from them, Van Halen, The Ramones but still done with heart and soul and power. The way rock and roll should be. Dangerous. Unexpected. Anything can happen. And that's the cool thing, it's exciting `still and it's new and fresh."While dominating periods of the late 1980's, glam rock has been a genre of music that has ridden varying waves of popularity. It is not so much a form of music than an encapsulating way of life and Spade says The Midnight Devils are confident of being the band to usher in the new wave of glam rock/metal."We're young guys,” he offered. “We're hungry. We're on the road in a bus driving across the country to play one or two shows. We're the guys that will be there no matter what, just for the love of what we do and what we put to the table is this intensity, this fire, this energy and it takes you back and you realise these guys grew up on these bands that influenced us all. Whether it be Motley Crue, Poison, Faster Pussycat, we've taken it and made it our own and made it interesting and something that anybody in 2021, 2022 can latch on to and be like, I get what these guys are doing. It's what we grew up on but it's new still. Over the quarantine we signed our first record deal with Pavement Entertainment out of Chicago and we just completed a tour with Pretty Boy Floyd. We're heading out with Enuff Z Nuff and I feel like... there's coming a time when all these bands are gonna be maybe hanging it up or calling it quits. Who are the guys that are gonna be coming up after that? It's us."In the full interview Sam talks more about the upcoming album, working with the legendary Chip ZNuff, their intense live show, touring with Pretty Boy Floyd and some road stories, future touring plans and more.
