Power of X-Men: The Greatest Comic Book Podcast in All of the Multiverse!
Join us for an unforgettable conversation with actress and model Stephanie Romanov as we explore her dynamic career, from her early days on Models Inc. and Melrose Place to her iconic role as Lilah Morgan on Angel.
Power of X-Men: The Greatest Comic Book Podcast in All of the Multiverse!
In this episode, we sit down with Avenue Magazine Editor-at-Large Alexander Mason Hankin to dive deep into all things Emma Frost. We explore her latest role in Marvel Rivals, unpack the evolution of her iconic X-fashion, and share our dream casting for Emma Grace Frost in the MCU—plus why we think Emma Roberts would be the perfect choice.
We're seeing the signs of the start of summer (or at least people wanting it to be). Erin tries out some Boom Boom fashion with her new thrifted sleep shirt featuring everyone's favorite lasagna-eating cat, and Bryan saw a movie in New York's smallest movie theater. Erin tells us about a disturbing trend of creepy men zooming in on women's body parts at concerts with their cameras, and also calls out people disturbing the concert experience with selfie flashes. Bryan tells us how we're attempting to celebrate Pride this year, while over 700 anti-LGBTQ+ bills are being passed through the government, rainbow flags are being banned, and how the Department of Homeland Security can't be bothered to talk about protecting spaces and calling for safety during this year's large gatherings. Boom Boom, the Taupo dinosaur, is exploding on social media after a rocky start with some rate payers. The near ten metre tall dinosaur sculpture sitting on a large geometric rock is the town's latest attraction. The sculpture first gained attention after the council contributed a one off grant of one hundred thousand dollars, while residents are facing a rates increase of more than eight percent. Now Boom Boom is attracting international attention online. Taupo Mayor David Tewavas spoke to Lisa Owen.
Tyler talks about his takeaways from the first day of OTAs, Cardinals' defense, Kyler Murray, and more.

Leroy opens with a very underwhelming story about a turtle in his pool. The crew dives into the Panthers' sluggish 3-0 loss to the Canes and whether the Cats can bounce back. It's time for Game Balls and Game Bums, plus Brittney tries (and fails) to sell Tobin on F1 — he's not here for the vroom vroom. Hour Tua gets spicy with a heated debate over why Liam Eichenberg is still on the team. Is an anti-bullying campaign against Tobin in order? Tyreek Hill says he's back "in the lab" — but is he committed to Miami? Tuesday means it's time for “Damage is Done,” with shots at Giannis, Knicks fans, and more F1. Paul Maurice drops a “shotgunning beer in church” analogy after the Panthers' loss, and we finally learn what Marchand was really eating during intermission. Tobin's Mixed Bagn hits on SGA's free throws, Ant's struggles, and Bob's wisdom. Things spiral as JFig trashes Shakira (karaoke included), and the crew argues whether “Hips Don't Lie” is bigger than any Taylor Swift song. Oh — and Dolphins are now banned from banging the Panthers' drum. Who should replace them? Plus: Alright Oh No, Memorial Day madness, JFig v. Tobin, and even more F1.

From the Shadow of the Blues: My Story of Music, Addiction, and Redemption (Rowman & Littlefield, 2025) is powerful memoir of redemption from the son of blues legend John Lee Hooker. Born in Detroit and exposed to the music world from an early age, John Lee Hooker Jr. began singing as a featured attraction in his father's shows as a teenager. His father was a sharecropper's son who became known for hit songs like "Boogie Chillin," "I'm in the Mood," and "Boom Boom," and in 1972, he and his father performed live and recorded an album in Soledad Prison. Junior seemed to have a golden ticket to a successful music career as a child, but trouble brewed as his father's marriage was in trouble and ripped apart the family.Drug addiction and a series of related crimes, including as a con player, landed Junior in and out of jails & prisons for several decades. An early brush with the law led to a sentence at Synanon, the infamous drug rehabilitation program turned religious cult. Later arrests resulted in time served in prisons including at Soledad, San Quentin, and Avenal.Shot, stabbed, and convicted multiple times, Junior was at his lowest point doing time at a Santa Rita jail, but it was at that moment that he found the Lord. He emerged clean and sober and began a successful career as a blues singer, earning two Grammy nominations as well as the Bobby "Blue" Bland Lifetime Achievement Award. He eventually devoted himself fully to his faith. Reverend John Lee Hooker Jr. testifies, preaches, and performs gospel music in churches and prisons in both Germany and America. John Corabi is a powerhouse rock vocalist and guitarist whose career has spanned more than four decades. Known for his gravelly voice, heartfelt lyrics, and gritty authenticity, Corabi has carved a unique niche in rock and metal history. He first gained attention in the late 1980s with The Scream, a hard rock band that blended bluesy swagger with heavy riffs. Their 1991 debut Let It Scream earned a cult following and showcased Corabi's range and charisma, even as the grunge movement was starting to dominate the airwaves. His biggest break came in 1994, when he was tapped to replace Vince Neil as the lead singer of Mötley Crüe. The resulting self-titled album, Mötley Crüe (1994), marked a radical departure from the band's glam metal roots. With Corabi on vocals and rhythm guitar, the album was darker, heavier, and more musically ambitious. Though it received critical praise and remains a fan favorite, it didn't achieve the commercial success Elektra Records had hoped for, and Corabi left the band in 1997 when Neil returned.Unfazed, Corabi continued to explore new musical paths. He played guitar for Ratt for several years and worked with various artists in projects that allowed him to flex his creative muscles. One notable collaboration was with Union, the band he formed with former KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick. Union released two studio albums that blended classic rock with modern tones, again proving Corabi's versatility and songwriting chops. In the 2010s, Corabi joined The Dead Daisies, a revolving supergroup of rock veterans. With Corabi on vocals, the band released multiple albums, including Revolución (2015) and Burn It Down (2018), which received acclaim for their retro-hard rock sound and powerful performances. His work with the Daisies helped reintroduce him to a new generation of fans, thanks to extensive touring and a polished yet passionate delivery.Corabi is also known for his solo work, where he strips things down to an acoustic, story-driven format. His live shows often include personal anecdotes, behind-the-scenes stories from his time in Mötley Crüe and beyond, and intimate versions of songs spanning his entire career. In 2022, he released John Corabi: Horseshoes and Hand Grenades, an autobiography that pulls no punches in telling his story in his own words.John Corabi is keeping the blues alive and well in 2025, with not one but two major projects lighting up the rock world. First, he's fronting The Dead Daisies on their upcoming blues-drenched album Lookin' For Trouble, and second, he's signed a new solo record deal, marking a fresh chapter in his storied careerSet for release on May 30, 2025, Lookin' For Trouble is The Dead Daisies' first full-length blues album. Born from late-night jam sessions during the recording of their rock album Light 'Em Up, the band—featuring Corabi, Doug Aldrich, David Lowy, Michael Devin, and drummer Sarah Tomek—found themselves immersed in the soulful legacy of the blues. Recording at the iconic FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, they reimagined classics like Robert Johnson's “Crossroads,” John Lee Hooker's “Boom Boom,” and B.B. King's “The Thrill Is Gone” with their signature hard rock flairYou can follow him on social media or check out his latest news at johncorabi.com.

This week: sectarian persecution returns Paul Wood, Colin Freeman and Father Benedict Kiely write in the magazine this week about the religious persecution that minorities are facing across the world from Syria to the Congo. In Syria, there have been reports of massacres with hundreds of civilians from the Alawite Muslim minority targeted, in part because of their association with the fallen Assad regime. Reports suggest that the groups responsible are linked to the new Syrian president Ahmed al-Sharaa (formerly known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani). For some, the true face of the country's new masters has been revealed. Whether the guilty men are punished will tell us what kind of country Syria has become since the fall of Assad's dictatorship. Speaking to those on the ground, Wood reports of fathers who were shot in front of their families, victims made to howl like dogs as they crawled through piles of corpses, and of state security forces trying to prevent survivors from photographing or talking about what had happened. But to what extent is al-Sharaa responsible? And could other minorities, like the Syrian Christian minority – one of the oldest in the world, be next? Paul and Fr Benedict joined the podcast to discuss. (1:02) Next: this century's ‘unstoppable process of language extinction' There are around 7,000 languages currently spoken across the world, but by the end of the century only 500 are expected to survive. Thus, documenting endangered languages has never been so important and this is the starting point of Lorna Gibb's new book, Rare Tongues: The Secret Stories of Hidden Languages, reviewed by Harry Ritchie in the books section of the magazine this week. What are some examples of the languages facing extinction? And should we accept this as an inevitable cultural rise and fall, or should we be working to combat this? Harry joined the podcast alongside Dr Oliver Mayeux, a sociolinguist at Cambridge, who also speaks Louisiana creole – a language spoken by fewer that 10,000 people. With special thanks to the Endangered Language Alliance, for allowing us to use a clip of the Garifuna language, who are working to document and preserve languages facing extinction across the world. (18:06) And finally: what is ‘Boom Boom', Gen Z's favourite aesthetic trend? Out are boring converse and dirty t-shirts beloved by millennial tech bros and in are high-fashion double-breasted suits and loafers, or so says Arabella Byrne who writes about the aesthetic trend defining Gen Z. American trend analyst Sean Monahan – who also coined 2013's ‘normcore' – coined the term ‘Boom Boom' to encapsulate the look and feel of the trend. Think 1980s yuppies updated for 2025 – so why exactly is it popular, and what does it tell us about today's twentysomethings? Arabella and Sean joined the podcast to discuss. (27:50) Plus: Matthew Parris, Stephen Fry, Rory Sutherland, Rachel Johnson, Philip Hensher, Sean Thomas and Petronella Wyatt reveal the worst insults they ever received from a teacher. (13:59) Presented by William Moore and Lara Prendergast. Produced by Patrick Gibbons.

That song was directed at the squares who weren't yet hip to the Sixties. It sounded foreboding then, and it sounds foreboding now, because something is happening, again — something perhaps as great and consequential as the cultural changes of Dylan's time. For several years now, people have been speaking about a cultural “vibe shift.” The MAGA electoral victory appears to have been the culmination of that shift. The Trumpist victory has ushered in a new political elite and with it, a cultural style that is more transgressive, crude, and rude than the once-liberal American mainstream. Helping us understand what's happening is this week's special guest, Sean Monahan, one of the most perceptive cultural forecasters of our time. If you've ever used the term “normcore,” or if you've heard someone talk about a “vibe shift,” you've been influenced by Sean. And if you haven't heard those terms, then you're about to learn a lot about American culture in this episode. Sean is a writer, trend forecaster and brand consultant, whose Substack, 8Ball, is an oracle of cultural insight.Sean joins Christine Emba and Shadi Hamid and they all get deep about vibes. What is a vibe? Can it be defined? If it can't, then how is it a useful concept? Is it based on material conditions? How long does a vibe last? But the conversation soon ventures beyond these theoretical generalities. Shadi wants to know whether American culture has fundamentally shifted to the right since the rise of Trump. Christine detects a mean streak to this new culture: a certain cruelty or at least, ruthless competitiveness. Sean puts things in perspective, explaining how generations create, condition, and then abandon trends, and how the weird period of Covid lockdown had a unique effect on trend creation, one that still affects us to this day. He also describes the new aesthetic of the Trump era, which he believes is based primarily on desire for money, and which he has dubbed, “Boom Boom.”In our bonus section for paid subscribers, Sean discusses why religion has become attractive to young people, especially young men, whether he sees good vibes or bad vibes in the near future, and whether he believes most Americans actually like Trump and DOGE.Required Reading:* Sean Monahan's Substack, 8Ball.* Sean Monahan, “Anatomy of a Vibe Shift” (8Ball).* Sean Monahan, “Boom Boom: Anatomy of a Trend” (8Ball).* Sean Monahan, “The Counter Elite Won the Meme War” (8Ball).* CrowdSource: “Truth and Vibes” (WoC).* Famous 2022 article from New York Magazine: “A Vibe Shift is Coming” (New York).* W.
