Whiteford deliver raw, passionate rock songs with a narrative of the ups and downs of love, celebration, loss and life, weaving elements of modern and classic rock with blues, layered with energy, emotion and delivered with soul. Having many years of on stage and in studio experience, they are ready to break out of the local scene and onto the festival circuit and larger stages. Their energetic and emotional driven live show is something not to be missed. Emerging in 2016 with their debut EP, Whiteford quickly earned a reputation as one Sydney's most exciting up and coming rock acts. In 2018 the band released their self titled album which featured live favourites “She Joins Love” and “Words Like Bullets” both of which scored airplay on radio stations across the country and received high praise from global rock media. In late 2022 the band released The Acoustic EP featuring the single, She's Amazing, which is their first release through their new home at Australian rock label, XMusic. 2023 saw more local shows & headline spots for Whiteford such as, the Convoy For Kids truck convoy and fair day to a crowd in excess of 2000 people & the sell out show for the launch of their latest video for the single, “ I'm Alright (Speedball mix)" which is also the theme song to Savage Speedball, a new cue sport game & upcoming TV show. Recently Whiteford played sold out shows with Reece Mastin, Electric Mary & the legendary Spy v Spy along with their own headline performances. The band are currently in studio recording their second studio album.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersAussie rock outfit Shotgun Mistress exploded out of the blocks with their debut self-titled album in 2021, showcasing an old-school approach to songwriting that saw them instantly branded amongst rising bands to keep an ear out for.Spawning a string of chart-topping singles such as No Friend Of Mine, Save Me From Myself, Glorious Machine, Collide and Bleed Me Out, it seemed Australian rock had finally found a fresh talent to proudly call their own.Following a highly successful 2023 which saw Shotgun Mistress complete sold-out national tours with Electric Mary and Palace Of The King, the boys decided to take stock and capitalise on their continued momentum with album number two, always considered the making or breaking of any band. With the new album Kings Of The Revolution in the can and planned for a June release, Shotgun Mistress have unveiled the first taste of what to expect with the hard-hitting single Jude Judas, just ahead of their national tour as part of GlamFest 2024 which also features Slaughter, Lynch Mob, H.E.A.T, Janet Gardner and plenty more.HEAVY sat down with frontman Glenn Patrick to dive deeper into Shotgun Mistress' new music and their exciting next few months."The track is the best single from the second album," Patrick declared about Jude Judas. "The first album is always going to test the waters and see what it's like and how we all work together as a band family and democracy, so the second album was a good chance to spread our wings knowing how everyone works. The recording process was ten times easier, and we all had a good time working together. It only took almost 40 years to find a band I actually get along with (laughs). The song itself is typical, the word Judas obviously biblical in the fact you've got a friend who took advantage of you in a situation. It pays homage to a mate of mine who has gone through a bit of shit, but he's on the up and up, so this goes out to him."We press Patrick as to why the band chose Jude Judas as the first single and representation of the new album."It was tough," he conceded. "There's a couple of really good standout ones. The second single, I absolutely love, which is going to be coming out shortly after this one. And even the third one is an amazing song, which we actually got Rusty from Electric Mary in to do some vocals. That's a really, really good track, and that one is called Mary Jane. It's a fitting name as well (laughs)."In the full interview, Glenn talks more about Jude Judas, the remainder of the album and what to expect, their goals going into the recording process and if they were achieved, the upcoming Glamfest tour and their part in it, the high number of Australian bands on the bill and how important that is for Australian music, Shotgun Mistress' live show and what to expect, what sorts of things they learned as a band touring with Aussie heavyweights like Electric Mary, their own headline tour later this year and more.

Interview by Kris PetersAfter starting out more as a studio project for vocalist/guitarist Dean Wittmann-Lamb, Melbourne rock machine The Revolation wasted little time in fleshing out to a fully-fledged live unit.Spurred on by the reception for his first three singles recorded by himself, Wittmann-Lamb soon cast his net wider, recruiting three like-minded musicians to carry The Revolation into the second phase of their musical journey. After releasing their second EP - and first as a full band - Full Circle, The Revolation entered their next cycle recently with the single Liberty, an infectiously catchy number that showcases the band's future musical direction. With their next single The Fix due out in early December, The Revolation are ramping up their live appearances in order to gain further momentum, starting with a show at The Leadbeater this Saturday, October 14, supporting Warbirds. That gig will be followed by a special performance at Mr. Boogie Man Bar on November 18, where The Revolation will play their entire musical catalogue with no support band.Band members Wittmann-Lamb, Scott Danson (drums) and Damian Zylstra (guitar) joined HEAVY to discuss their plans, starting with their fresh single Liberty."It's been up on YouTube for roughly two weeks now, and it's had 4.2k views which is great!" Wittmann-Lamb told us. "Good feedback too, from all over the world. There's been some interesting comments from other countries, which is good to see.""Is that the Swedish chicks?" Danson interjected."There's been all sorts, Scott," Wittmann-Lamb laughed. "Even some from Russia."Swedish fans aside, we ask the guys to delve into the musical nature of Liberty."The song sort of just… I wrote it a while ago, actually," Wittmann-Lamb began. "And then… there's no reason why songs turn out the way they turn out. All of your influences come to you at some point, and they come out of you at some point too and that's the way it should be. I'm not afraid to say I'm influenced by the bands that you may hear in that song, and then once the boys get hold of it with their creative juices and put their influence in the song, they tap into things that I might not have tapped into, and eventually it comes together like a great big mixing pot and what comes out is The Revolation."In the full interview, the guys run us through the steady musical progression of the band, their upcoming single The Fix, where that fits in with a new EP or album cycle, the band's chemistry and how it translates to their music, recent shows with Electric Mary and Sister's Doll, this weekend's show at The Leadbeater Hotel, upcoming gigs, a special December acoustic performance and more.

Hola, gente.

Melbourne rock outfit Shotgun Mistress have been making waves since the release of their self titled debut album mid last year. They burst onto the scene with a swagger and assuredness that could almost have been mistaken for arrogance had they not delivered everything they promised and more.Originally formed by Matt Wilcock - better known for his work in death metal outfits The Bezerker, Akercocke and Abramelin - Shotgun Mistress are Australia's answer to the Sunset Strip bands of LA, but with twice the purpose. On the eve of their massive Australian tour with fellow Melbourne rockers Electric Mary, drummer David Lee joined HEAVY for a light hearted chat about the past, present and future of Shotgun Mistress. With the recent state of cancelled or postponed shows, we start by asking if he has allowed himself to get excited for the tour yet?"I don't know man," he laughed. "I'm waking up pretty early tomorrow morning! It will be like, is this real or is it going to fuck me again? Let's wait and see what happens tomorrow morning! We're leaving early so we'll hopefully be at the airport around 7 am and then we'll be down at Tassie by about 10 and fingers crossed we can keep moving around and let's get this done this time. It's been two years in the making for us all so we just really want to get out and party now, and rock and roll."It seems only natural that playing live - like anything that takes practice - is something that could quickly desert you with a prolongued absence, and Dave honestly affirms that theory."You do lose a little bit of the feel once you haven't done it for such a long time," he measured, "but I tell you what, it only takes one or two songs and then you're straight back in. You get the energy running with all the crowds and everything again and create some mayhem and have as much fun with the crowd as possible. That's what it's all about. We play the music, they bang their heads and enjoy themselves and scream and shout and drink plenty of alcohol and we all have a good time together!"In the full interview Dave runs us through the tour and what to expect, speaks about touring with Electric Mary and why the two bands make a good fit, getting back out there and playing to your fans, progress on album number two and more.

Fresh off the back of a successful stint as part of the recent Under The Southern Stars Festival, Melbourne rockers Electric Mary are about to set off on an Australian tour with Shotgun Mistress that sees them visit every state of Australia. After having to change the dates a number of times due to current world events, Electric Mary are set to finally deliver their live show to the country, with frontman Rusty joining HEAVY to chat about the tour."We're heading to all the towns plus a few more that we went to on the last tour which was in March," he enthused. "It's a great opportunity to get out there again, and we haven't done anything like this for four years, maybe five. COVID messed up everything we had going on for it, but yeah, really looking forward to it. We're starting in Hobart on April 29th."Despite recent setbacks, Rusty says the band is allowing themselves to finally get excited about the tour, especially with the first show starting this week."Yeah, I'm excited," he smiled. "I've been excited since the Under The Southern Stars. We want to just keep going and going and hopefully we can get back overseas to Europe. Right now it's the Aussie thing. Hobart, Gold Coast, Brissy, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra - which we haven't been to since maybe Alice Cooper in 2010 - then we've got Newcastle, Sydney, Melbourne and Ballarat. I don't even know if Electric Mary has been to Ballarat. We may have, but I'm not sure (laughs)."In the full interview, Rusty talks about dealing with the touring world post COVID, taking Shotgun Mistress on the road with them, the UTSS tour and highlights from that, what we can expect from an Electric Mary headline show, some of his best memories from over the years, future plans and more.

We are so excited to have international bands back on tour with Under The Southern Stars kicking off last week. The band, Cheap Trick weren't an overnight success. They relentlessly toured warehouse parties and taverns until they were signed to a major label - funnily enough, discovered playing at a bowling alley! The first 2 albums weren't a huge success either, but after a 'Beatlemania like' trip to Japan and the release of 'Live at Budokan' it all just happened! That lead to 'Surrender' and 'Dream Police' and worldwide attention. As part of Under the Southern Stars, they are coming back to Australia and a lot has changed! UTSS was revolutionary, trying to bring international bands to Australia while we were cut off from the world during covid. The solution was, they all stay at a resort together for two weeks in quarantine. It would have been wild! Luckily it hasn't come to that, and it's on until March 27 in Brisbane. (Make sure you catch up on the chat with Gavin Rossdale from Bush and Eric Kretz from Stone Temple Pilots) This is Robin Zander from Cheap Trick, on The Rider with Becko and.... bonus, Rusty from Electric Mary

After two previous aborted attempts at getting the Under The Southern Stars music festival to Australia, the rock Gods have finally sided with local music lovers and look set to allow the spectacular touring line-up the opportunity to hit our stages in March.Featuring legendary rock acts Stone Temple Pilots, Cheap Trick, Bush and the more recent Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, UTSS is a rock festival for the ages, covering three generations of music lovers in one entertaining package that showcases the golden era of rock.Aussie rockers Rose Tattoo and Electric Mary will provide support for the nationwide festival, proving once more that our best can match it with that of anywhere in the world. With excitement building as the countdown runs down, Stone Temple Pilots guitarist Dean DeLeo joined HEAVY to talk about the tour and part of being in the highly successful and timeless band that is Stone Temple Pilots."My goodness, we're 0 and 2 man,” he laughed. “You know what was really tough? We shipped our gear down there to and from, not once, but twice! We shipped our gear down there two times over the last year and a half so we're just gonna fly down with our gear now. We're gonna take a lot less of it and use some of your gear down there. We're pretty thrilled this is finally coming together. Dax and I - Rick's son Dax Nielson - are thrilled. We've all been on the road with one another at one point or another. We did a lot of touring with Cheap Trick back in 1996, a lot of touring in the summer of 18 with Bush and in 2000 we did a lot of touring with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club so it will be nice to see everybody and get on stage with one another. We're looking forward to seeing your local heroes down there."Despite not having played anywhere near the amount of shows in the last two years as they normally would have, DeLeo insists that STP will be match fit and ready to shake things up when they hit our shores."No, not a heck of a lot,” he replied when asked if they had managed to play many gigs. “We're talking going back to March of 2020… no, we've only done a handful of shows. You could count on one hand the amount of shows that we've done. I'm gonna say we did about maybe 20 shows in the last two years. We did a nice little tour in the starts with our dear friends Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown and we almost made the entire run. We made it and then we had to cancel the last two shows because two of our guys came down with the big 19."In the full interview Dean runs us through what to expect from the shows, travelling to the other side of the world in uncertain times, the amount of shows they are playing in the short time they are here, the early days of the band, Jeff Gutt joining as vocalist and how he got the job and more.

Melbourne rock outfit Electric Mary are the ultimate party band.Their blues infused brand of hard rock has seen them warmly embraced through most of Europe - sadly moreso than in their home country - but new track The King Of Rock 'N' Roll should finally show Australian music lovers just how good this band is.An engaging live band with a penchant for upstaging any line-up they are asked to play on, Electric Mary have undergone several band incarnations, each varying slightly musically but all maintaining the rock fire that refuses to be extinguished. With The King Of Rock 'N' Roll set for release on August 5, enigmatic frontman Rusty took some time out to sit down for a typically entertaining and informative chat, as always openly wearing his heart and genuine love for music firmly on his sleeve."Stylistically, it's a little different for us," he said of the new single. "Basically it was thrown up by Alex, our bass player, who said 'you need to write a song called The King Of Rock 'N' Roll because you always go around telling people that's what you are (laughs). Initially, I started writing it about Bon Scott. He's second to none. There's equals - like Robert Plant - but Bon Scott… he's hard to beat, and it's hard to explain, and that's why the song isn't about him in the end. I didn't feel like I could… I didn't have the right knowledge, because I was trying to write it as an understanding of how he would feel, but of course I can't really know that, so I didn't write it. But then I thought I could write this about a bunch of people I know who have had a little bit of success and stuff has dropped away, but people are still wanting to go out and see them play. It might just be 100 people, it might be fifty, but they're still out there. Their problem is they've been ripped off by record companies and anyone else who thinks they can make some money out of them, but they still go for it and some people think they're the kings of rock and roll, which is very cool."In the full interview Rusty talks more about The King Of Rock And Roll and how it is a different approach for Electric Mary, experimenting with different genres and making them work, future new music, the state of touring from a musician's perspective, the status of their upcoming tour and more.

In the early 2000’s, Melbourne’s RED CIRCLE seemed poised to bring anthemic and epic rock back from the shadows in which it had been lurking. Riding the wave out of Nu-Metal, in an era when discovering new music via Myspace was becoming a thing, bands such as Marvelous 3, Waltham and American Hi-Fi were bringing back the guitar solo, anthemic choruses and a touch of that 80’s hard rock attitude. Locally, Motor Ace were delivering monster riffs, Jet were just about to take off and Electric Mary were just kicking off. This year, Live is celebrating 25 years since the release of their iconic Throwing Copper album. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist, Ed Kowalczyk, has recently come off Live's Summer world tour, for which the band was joined by Bush and Our Lady Peace. In 2020, the renowned rock band will be travelling to Adelaide for Under the Southern Stars. The line-up is also set to feature Bush and Stone Temple Pilots, as well as Rose Tattoo and Electric Mary. “I think the festival atmosphere of this concert line-up is going to be really cool,” Kowalczyk says. Since reuniting in late 2016, Live has enjoyed a return to touring life, with the original lineup, along with two additional members. “It's nice when you actually get to a city and have a day or two off,” Kowalczyk says. When asked about the reunion, and what it has meant for Live, Kowalczyk is reflective. “The demand for the band has been astronomical since the reunion in 2016,” he says. “I love it. I mean, it never gets old.” Since the reunion, Live has released a new EP, Local 717, and more new music is in the works. “Next year, we're looking forward to, after our trip down under, being able to really move into the studio … we haven't released a full length album for many years, so we're excited to get to work on that,” Kowalczyk comments. During their career, Live has achieved seven Top 5 albums in Australia, three of which topped the charts at #1 for a total of ten weeks. “I get to do my hobby for a living,” says Kowalczyk. Under the Southern Stars will be in Adelaide in Bonython Park on April 13 2020 (Easter Monday).  Tickets are available at www.underthesouthernstars.com.au Your host for this episode is Kelly Noble. "It's taken over a year to finish", declared Rusty, vocalist for Melbourne rockers Electric Mary, talking about the upcoming album Mother which will be released on February 22. "There's a lot more depth in this record because we went about it a bit differently. We sat around for a couple of weeks in the studio doing production on every song this time whereas usually what happens is Pete and me and myself write the demos and we take them to the band and they learn them and then we record them. This time we did the demos, gave them to the band to learn, then we all sat around and started again basically and the preference was for the best idea wins".One of Electric Mary's strongest appeals is you know what you are going to get with each release. Their brand of uncompromising rock is a feature of their musical output, but Rusty hints that this album sees them explore new territory."There are typical Electric Mary songs on there", he surmised, "but probably half of the album is things we haven't done before which we started doing on the last EP The Last Great Hope when we brought in things like the harp. We haven't really done any laid back stuff before - and when I say laid back I'm talking about the speed of songs - but this time we've got a couple on there. We had one on the last one called 'Already Gone', there's one called 'Long Long Day' this time and another one called 'It's Alright' which has a chorus as such. A lot of our songs don't, in the typical songwriting genre, have choruses where you go here's the verse, here's the midsection, and here's the chorus. A lot of our songs have an end tag if that makes sense, so we went about it a bit different this time".In the full interview Rusty discusses the lyrical content of the album, the bands wealth of talent of current and former guitarists, the early days of Electric Mary, the success of their debut release, why he thinks Electric Mary are more popular with overseas markets than in Australia, what can be done to reverse the growing trend, plus tells some entertaining stories about some of the bands the band has supported over the years.
