This story was written by Greg Cahill for the March-April 2024 issue of Strings magazine and is read by editor Megan Westberg.“I love that film and soundtrack music aren't limited by preconceptions or genres,” says cellist, composer, software developer, and entrepreneur Tina Guo, 38, whose extensive film work includes the 2022 Academy Award–winning soundtrack to Dune. “Anything goes, and experimentation or seeking to always do something new is so wonderful and so exhilarating—depending on the project, anything from classical to electronic to heavy metal to country to new age to tribal to jazz. Literally anything. People used to tell me that I should ‘stick with one genre,' but this is the perfect playground for me to release all of my creative energy.”

Part 1 of Robbie Fulks at public radio program Live From The Divide in beautiful Bozeman, MT. Robbie Fulks was born in York, Pennsylvania, and grew up in a half-dozen small towns in southeast Pennsylvania, the North Carolina Piedmont, and the Blue Ridge area of Virginia. He learned guitar from his dad, banjo from Earl Scruggs and John Hartford records, and fiddle (long since laid down in disgrace) on his own. He attended Columbia College in New York City in 1980 and dropped out in 1982 to focus on the Greenwich Village songwriter scene and other ill-advised pursuits. In the mid-1980s he moved to Chicago and joined Greg Cahill’s Special Consensus Bluegrass Band, with whom he made one record (Hole in My Heart, Turquoise, 1989) and toured constantly. Since then he has gone on to create a multifarious career in music. He was a staff instructor in guitar and ensemble at Old Town School of Folk Music from 1984 to 1996.

SPECIAL CONSENSUS is the Grammy nominated acoustic bluegrass band that was founded in 1975 by banjoist Greg Cahill as a showcase for his urban traditionalist take on bluegrass which encompasses elements of Chicago blues, swing, newgrass, and country music. The band's latest is 'Country Boy' a bluegrass tribute to John Denver. There is a natural affinity between bluegrass and John Denvers repertoire but this is the first purely bluegrass tribute to the iconic singer/songwriter who died in 1997. The album showcases Special Consensus at the musical center of each track with a guest cast of Grammy-winning and International Bluegrass Music Association-winning vocalists andinstrumentalists. CANE MILL ROAD is a North Carolina youth bluegrass band formed from kids who met and bonded while performing at MerleFest. These kids have won countless blue ribbons and individually have performed on stage alongside the likes of J.D. Crowe, Pete Wernick, and Scythian. JONATHAN WILSON-RADER is a budding bluegrass star from Jessamine County. This eight year old has traveled the commonwealth, played with several well-known bluegrass musicians and just completed his first album.
Greg Cahill is originally from Boston and graduated from NYU in 2004. His thesis film there was Wolves of Chechnya, a short film about a Russian soldier’s harrowing experiences in the Chechen War. He then moved to LA, where he produces and directs special features for the NBC TV series Medium. Greg Cahill has recently written, directed, and produced The Golden Voice, a short film about the Cambodian rock singer Ros Sereysothea, one of Cambodia’s biggest stars of the 60’s and early 70’s before the advent of the Khmer Rouge. It is a tragic yet inspiring film featuring some undiscovered gems of rock and roll music.
