This week, More Voices. Another collection of contemporary folk singers with unique and authentic voices recorded live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Ballad singing is a primary form of expression in folk music. Folk ballads merge melody and story to recount events but also transport the listener to an emotional space. How well a ballad can bring the listener into that space very much depends on the singer. Less important to an effective folk singer are the rudimentary aspects of singing than is the authentic sound of their voice. The timbre and character of the singer's voice in service to the ballad becomes the vehicle, transporting the listener into that emotional space. Ozark original and legendary folk balladeer Aunt Ollie Gilbert for an example. As much as the stories Aunt Ollie relates, it's the sound of her instantly recognizable and authentic voice that moves listeners deep into the hills and hollers of the Ozarks. Featured on this episode are an all-star lineup of contemporary singers including: renowned vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Amythyst Kiah; Ozark original up and coming folk sensation Willie Carlisle; outlaw country music legends Malcolm Holcomb & Ozark original Billy Don Burns; singer-songwriter and educator Wil Maring; Paul Brock Band singer and multi-instrumentalist Dave Curley; famed folk duo The Secret Sisters; world champion mountain dulcimer player, vocalist and educator Sarah Kate Morgan; vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and musical time traveler Meredith Axelrod; folk blues superstar Taj Mahal; Jake Leg Stompers vocalist Lela Mae Smith; Kentucky Colonel and bluegrass sensation Dave Adkins. In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers a 1984 archival recording of Ozark original Pam Setser with Mike Gavin performing the Flatt & Scruggs song “Rough & Rocky” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In his segment “Back in the Hills,” writer, professor, and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins profiles the legendary Ozark original balladeer Oscar Gilbert, husband of famed ballad singer Aunt Ollie Gilbert. Featured is an archival recording of Oscar performing the traditional Ozark ballad “The Ballad of Cole Younger,” courtesy of the Lyon College Wolf Folklore Collection.

Traditional banks and investment firms frequently overlook these businesses, leaving them without the necessary resources to thrive. Recognizing this critical gap, FundingHope has stepped in as a solution. As a FINRA-registered, SEC-approved investment crowdfunding portal, FundingHope connects investors with small business owners dedicated to making a difference in their communities.Dorian Dickinson, CEO and Managing Director of FundingHope, understands the power of community investment. “We're here to step in to help democratize access to capital to the founders who need it the most,” Dorian explained. By prioritizing businesses aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), FundingHope ensures that investments contribute to both economic and social progress. One of the companies currently raising funds on the platform is hūmNET, a startup that has developed a unique mobile app designed to foster human connection. “They're from a rural community in Vermont and recognize the importance of people being connected,” Dorian shared. Another business, NEIGHBR, focuses on building affordable, eco-friendly housing, blending sustainability with community development. These businesses exemplify the type of impactful enterprises that FundingHope seeks to support.Dorian's journey into crowdfunding was shaped by his experience working in rural and conflict-stricken regions. When the COVID-19 pandemic halted his international development work, he turned his attention to the economic struggles of small businesses in the United States. “It always circled back to either a lack of investment or disinvestment in the communities and the businesses in the communities,” he noted. This realization fueled his mission to create a platform that fosters local job creation and economic empowerment.Impact investing through crowdfunding offers an alternative to traditional philanthropy, allowing individuals to support businesses without depleting their financial resources. “When we invest wisely, we're not limited because the money comes back and we can do it again and again,” Dorian emphasized. This sustainable model of investment enables communities to grow without reliance on external aid.FundingHope stands as a testament to the potential of crowdfunding in reshaping the investment landscape. By channeling funds into businesses that create tangible social impact, it provides both financial returns and meaningful change. As more investors recognize the benefits of impact crowdfunding, platforms like FundingHope are poised to drive lasting transformation in disadvantaged communities.tl;dr:FundingHope empowers small businesses in disadvantaged communities by providing access to investment capital.Companies like hūmNET and NEIGHBR are raising funds on FundingHope to drive social impact and innovation.Impact investing enables individuals to support meaningful causes while potentially earning financial returns.Dorian's superpower is true empathy, which helps him connect with and support entrepreneurs.Practicing empathy daily by engaging with diverse communities can foster deeper understanding and meaningful action. How to Develop True Empathy As a SuperpowerDorian's superpower is true empathy—the ability to deeply understand others' struggles and take meaningful action to help them.“I actually put myself in someone else's shoes, really understand what they're going through, how they feel when they're with their family, how they embrace and work through failures,” Dorian explained. His ability to truly connect with people, especially founders from disadvantaged communities, allows him to guide them toward solutions and success. An example of Dorian's empathy in action is his work with small business owners who lack traditional financial support. Coming from a lower-middle-class background, he understands firsthand the challenges of financial insecurity. “When I'm engaging with a founder who is coming from a disadvantaged community, I relate to them. I understand their position of not having that friends and family network.” By helping entrepreneurs think outside the box to expand their networks, he empowers them to grow both their businesses and their communities. To develop true empathy as a personal strength, Dorian suggests:Focus on others: Take yourself out of the equation and truly listen to people's experiences.Step into their world: Engage with individuals from different backgrounds to gain firsthand perspective.Feel their struggles: Try to emotionally connect with their challenges to better understand their needs.Provide solutions or encouragement: Offer support in meaningful ways, whether through action or simply by giving hope.By following Dorian's example and advice, you can make true empathy a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileDorian Dickinson (he/him):CEO & Managing Director, FundingHopeAbout FundingHope: FundingHope is an SEC-registered, FINRA-member investment crowdfunding platform developed to connect everyday investors with founders and small business owners committed to achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal targets in disadvantaged and rural communities across America.Website: fundinghope.comCompany Facebook Page: fb.com/fundinghopecrowdfundingBiographical Information:Dorian Dickinson is the Co-Founder, CEO, and Managing Director of FundingHope, a dynamic SEC-registered crowdfunding platform that empowers entrepreneurs in disadvantaged and rural communities globally. Devin: What do you see as your superpower?Dorian: I look at my superpower as a blended cocktail of perseverance, humility, and true empathy.“Funding Hope is one of the good things that came out of Covid,” says the company's founder, Dorian Dickinson. “Prior to Covid, I was doing rural development and economic development work, mostly in conflict zones and developing countries.”“When Covid hit, my business went from 100 to 0 in about 48 hours,” he says. He began thinking about how he could deploy his experience abroad here at home.“It always circled back to funding,” Dorian says. The key being, his experience showed, “funding that really hit the ground really reached the people most in need in communities that could then drive economic development activity in their community.”Success in a community doesn't stop there. “That then would expand regionally,” he says. “At the end of the day, it would create a safer, healthier, cleaner environment for all.”Today, Funding Hope is live, FINRA-registered and taking funding applications. He has a message for investors:These communities that we're working in, which are distressed, at-risk in rural zip codes across America, are ripe with potential, but they're starving for capital. This is an opportunity for us to connect everyday investors to these small business owners, entrepreneurs and innovators who are also contributing to sustainability. Our target [investors] are committed to helping achieve UN Sustainable development goals in these communities because, at the end of the day, we're going to end up with safer, healthier, cleaner communities.Dorian has developed impact in his career by deploying a triple cocktail of superpowers, perseverance, humility and empathy.AI Episode Summary* Dorian Dickinson is the co-founder and managing director of Funding Hope, a crowdfunding site targeting solutions to big problems at the community level.* Dickinson believes that crowdfunding can be a part of the solution to these problems by using investment dollars from ordinary people to address economic development challenges in distressed rural communities.* He started Funding Hope after his previous business in rural and economic development was severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.* Funding Hope aims to get money into the hands of the people most in need and support small business owners, entrepreneurs, and innovators in rural areas.* The platform is vetting issuers looking to raise between $500,000 and $5 million and actively helps them target potential investors and drive funding for their projects.* Dickinson's career has taken him to conflict zones and developing countries, where he has worked on rural development projects.* One of his most memorable experiences was in Kabul, Afghanistan, where a 12-year-old boy expressed hope for a better future due to the work Dickinson was doing.* Dickinson believes his superpower is a blend of perseverance, humility, and empathy, which allow him to push through challenges, understand his limitations, and connect with the needs of others.* He advises others to step outside themselves, listen, and learn from different perspectives in order to improve their ability to help others.* To connect with Funding Hope and Dickinson, visit the Funding Hope website and sign up to receive their newsletter or become an investor. Dickinson can also be found on LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook. How to Develop the Triple Cocktail As a SuperpowerDorian explains how his superpowers, perseverance, humility and empathy work together:My background has given me the wherewithal to push through any difficulty or challenge and continue to pivot when necessary to see the light at the end of the tunnel, which I always hope is not a train coming at me. From there, humility gives me a clearer understanding of my strengths and weaknesses. I fully embrace my limitations and recognize that I'm not always the sharpest knife in the drawer. Then true empathy lets me move beyond just understanding someone's feelings to mentally connect with their needs and situation to gain a deeper insight into their state of mind and how they're acting the way that they are, and how we can improve their position to give them hope for the future.Dorian shared a story to illustrate the impact of his triple cocktail:A few years ago, before Covid, I was standing on a rooftop in Kabul, Afghanistan, with a government official from there. We had a small team with us. The work we were doing–some of it was urban work, some of it was rural work. But the man had his son with him; he was a 12-year-old boy who the father took out of school that day just so he could meet me. And the boy came up to me and said, “I just love the work you're doing here. I pray to God that you'll be successful, and you'll make the country a better place for us.”And that just stuck with me, where I put myself in his father's footsteps. I put myself being that young boy again, [feeling] what it would be like, what his life is like, and how we could make it better and what we can do to make it better. It's not bringing Western philosophy there. It's listening to them, listening to what their needs are, listening to how they would like to accomplish their goals, their ambitions, to restore that hope in what they can do moving forward in life. That stays with me every day.Dorian offers some thoughts about developing this triple cocktail of superpowers for yourself.I think everybody needs to take a step out of themselves. They need to try to put themselves in the other person's footsteps and understand where this person is coming from by listening to them. Listening is such a huge, huge attribute that people need to adopt and need to understand so that people can then share what they want, what they need so that then you can come back and you can look at how you can help guide them and help them achieve some level of success of where they want to be.Everybody has the opportunity to learn, and everybody else has that opportunity to educate someone. So, I think by taking the time to learn from somebody when you're having a conversation with somebody. Always try to leave with one or two ideas of what you've learned while you're having a conversation with them. This will make the world a whole lot better place.By following Dorian's example and advice, you can develop the triple cocktail of perseverance, humility and empathy as strengths that empower you, potentially allowing you to make them superpowers that let you do more good in the world.Guest-Provided ProfileDorian Dickinson (he/him):Co-Founder & Managing Director, FundingHopeAbout FundingHope: FundingHope, LLC is an investment crowdfunding platform registered with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and as a member of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). "Burned" is a powerful expose on the use of PFAS or "forever chemicals" in our turnout gear. As you'll hear in our conversation, forever chemicals are everywhere, but the concentration levels in items meant to protect us are astounding and disturbing. Elijah's work, along with others in the film, hopes to bring increased attention and drive the necessary changes. Elijah's path to becoming a filmmaker and problem solver is equally fascinating. Growing up in Wilmington, North Carolina, they attended UNC Chapel Hill originally to pursue a path in healthcare. Recognizing the lack of creative communication for complex issues, they founded Ethereal Films to help solve dire problems through storytelling and impact campaigns. Elijah's expertise and work have received numerous awards, including the Southern Exposure Film Festival in 2021, and they were dubbed a Kentucky Colonel by Governor Beshear in 2022 for their efforts on PFAS awareness. Join us on The Things We All Carry to hear Elijah's story and learn more about the important work they're doing to drive change. Listen to our podcast on all major platforms.

Has anyone held more jobs in the whiskey industry than Gregg Snyder? Seriously - I received the man's bio ahead of our interview and it was downright intimidating.  He's had roles at - just to name a few over a 41-year career: Chicken Cock/Grain and Barrel Kentucky Distiller's Association Joseph E. Seagram and Sons Jim Beam Western Spirits (Calumet, Sam Houston) Austin Nichols/Wild Turkey Distillery (where he created Russell's Reserve!) Brown Forman and Blue Grass Cooperage Associated Cooperage Industries of America Kentucky Bourbon Festival DISCUS Moonshine University He's also an honorary Kentucky Colonel, Diamond Life Member of the National Wild Turkey Federation, and more. Seriously - this guy not only knows a tremendous number of things but also at great depth.  The one that stood out most to me was his work at Blue Grass Cooperage, now known as Brown-Forman Cooperage, simply because how many master distillers have also been at the head of a cooperage?  His newest challenge is reviving Chicken Cock, a brand with tremendous history that suffered an unfortunate and long hiatus. It truly is a venerable brand, the "Famous Old Brand" that was the house whiskey at New York's Cotton Club during Prohibition.  Of course the name might make you snicker at first - we're all childish at heart, after all - but once you get past it you'll find a really cool brand putting out some great bourbon and rye. The limited editions have all been solid and interesting, some outright delicious.  Plus, listening to Gregg talk about Jimmy Russell like a regular guy who just "poked his head in my office" is hilariously fun.  _________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: If you haven't joined the Patreon community yet, please consider doing so! On this episode of Barrel Room Chronicles I speak with Steve Akley, founder of the ABV network about his whiskey journey and how his hobby grew into the network he has today. Then later in the show I speak with Bob White, founder of Kentucky Guides LLC, on how he went from local newspaper reporter to small business tour guide and entrepreneur. Guest Bios Steve Akley is the owner of the ABV Network, LLC. We are a bourbon media company that got started in 2016. Our mission is to provide quality content via podcasts and live events for our fans that is both fun and educational. We plan to deliver on this goal by always looking at what we are doing via the approach we had before we ever got into this business... as fans of the products, people, companies and industries we are talking about. As long as we continue to provide the type of fun, educational, entertainment that we were seeking to hear ourselves before we got on the air, it is the belief of our team that we will always exceed your expectations. Bob White is a native Kentuckian who joined the Bourbon boom in 2011, after a decade reporting small town news in Central Kentucky. That prior experience continues to offer him, and his guests, meaningful background information to best tell the story of Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey-making in the Bluegrass State. A planner, guide and commercially-licensed driver, Bob founded Kentucky Guides, LLC with a mission to take bourbon enthusiasts deeper into the science, history and geography behind America's Native Spirit. Having contracted as a guide for tour operators for years, Bob knew visitors hungered to learn more about this barrel-aged, corn-based whiskey than what a bus driver and basic distillery tour guide has to offer. Launching his micro-tour operation in the beginnings of the Covid-19 pandemic was suitable, since a tour with Kentucky Guides LLC doesn't rely on gift shops and distilleries to remain open in order to conduct a full-weekend bourbon tour. With love for his home state's budding tourism industry, Bob received a Governor's Commission as a Kentucky Colonel following his recognition by Louisville's Tourism and Convention Commission as an important conductor ‘‘Behind the Scenes.” Being a Kentucky Colonel doesn't relate to the military, but Bob served in the US Navy right after high school, working in ships‘ engineering departments between 1991-1993. Bob loves showing visitors to his home the best Kentucky has to offer. Like Daniel Boone said, Bob believes ‘‘Heaven must be a Kentucky kind of place.'' And he's doing what he truly loves. ‘‘Whether I die tonight, or win the lottery in the morning, I'll still be guiding tours around Kentucky,'' he says. Barrel Room Chronicles is a production of 1st Reel Entertainment and is distributed by Anchor.FM and is available on Spotify, Apple, Google, iHeartRadio, Amazon and wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts. Click play for a an important show with our exemplary hosts Denise Gray, Kimberly Cecil-Jones & Aaron Viles. Despite more and more KY Republicans proudly and loudly coming out against masks and supporting the anti-vaxx crowd, this week Governor Andy Beshear stood up for children's health and signed an order for a statewide school mask mandate. In contrast to Andy's courage, we'll also spotlight Rand Paul, Thomas Massie and Andy Barr's latest salvos in the war against public health. Next, we'll be joined by Dr. Kevin Kavanagh of Health Watch USA to discuss what we're getting wrong in how we should be combating the COVID delta variant. Then, we'll look at a Democrat and fact-free Fancy Farm, as well as cover the newest, scariest report about the state of our climate, and we'll check to see if any KY politician cares at all - we've then got Doug Price is Right! Looking at Corporate Contributions to the Sedition caucus, and we'll finish with our Action Events Calendar We need to acknowledge with sadness that tonight is Denise Gray's last show with Progress Kentucky - we're incredibly honored that she brought her political insights to our humble effort, and we will miss her greatly. But no matter where she goes in the future, she'll always be a Kentucky Colonel, and a founding Colonel of Truth. Thank you Denise!
