Gene Hackman left us in shocking and tragic circumstances on February 18, 2025. With his signature intensity, he may be one of the least stony actors of all time, but he was one of the best. To pay tribute to him we have his trippiest movie this side of CISCO PIKE (1971) with the quick-cut, dolly-shot, bullet-hole-cam madness of Sam Raimi's THE QUICK AND THE DEAD (1995). In this tribute to Sergio Leone's ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (1968), Gene Hackman delivers one of his most villainous performances as old west tyrant John Herod, who draws every shootist to his desert town for an annual gunfighting competition where the contestants duel to the death. Joining us to talk about Raimi's modern spaghetti western is actor LENNIE LOFTIN, who plays the grizzled townie Foy and gets to toss around an up-and-coming Russell Crowe in the movie. THE QUICK AND THE DEAD also stars Sharon Stone in the gender-swapped Man-with-No-Name role, Crowe in his first U.S. picture, and then rising star Leonardo DiCaprio as the cocky kid who is pretty good with a six-shooter. Plus Lance Henriksen, Keith David, Pat Hingle, Raynor Schiene, Roberts Blossom, and the great Woody Strode in his final film. Just about everybody's in this one and we are so lucky to have Loftin here to talk about this amazing film. Also joining host Bob Calhoun in her OMFYS debut, Rosemary Picado. Now you have heard her haunting vocals in the "O Nosferatu" carol in our NOSFERATU CHRISTMAS episode, but this is her first time as a panelist. She's a QUICK AND THE DEAD expert and fanatic, so we couldn't do this episode without her. Cory, Greg, and Philena are on assignment but they'll be back for The PhilenApocalypse III: Drag Story Time where Philena returns to torture the olds with TO WONG FOO, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING! The initial assault was chaotic—coral reefs slowed the approach, landing craft were wrecked, and units came ashore under heavy fire. But by the second and third days, the situation began to change. Officers like Shoup, Edson, and Jones made key decisions, reinforcements came in, and tanks managed to cross the reef. Despite exhaustion and limited ground, the Marines pushed inland. Today's episode focuses on that shift—from securing the beach to pressing the attack. We'll look at how the 1st Battalion 8th Marines broke through, how Crowe and Jones coordinated flanking movements, and how tanks helped turn the momentum. We'll also cover the Japanese night assaults and the close-quarters fighting that defined the battle's turning point. Tarawa remained brutal, but these days marked the start of a hard-fought advance. ************* Visit HistoryoftheMarineCorps.com to subscribe to our newsletter, explore episode notes and images, and see our references. Retailers say Gardaí need to do more to tackle anti-social behaviour. A survey by Excel Recruitment found shops want to see more urgency in tackling rising crime levels, including bringing in Anti-Social Behaviour Orders or ASBOs, and increasing funding for CCTV schemes. CSO figures for July to September last year show robberies from shops are up 10 per cent nationally on 2023 levels, while here in Clare, shop theft was the second most common type of offence, though figures remained relatively static in 2024, compared to the same period of the previous year, with 164 instances recorded. In this episode of AML Conversations, John sits down with Sara Crowe, Strategic Initiatives Director, Financial Systems for the Polaris Project. Sara leads Polaris's efforts to partner with the financial services industry to implement a comprehensive and industry-wide strategy to intervene in the crime of human trafficking. This initiative aims to 1) disrupt human trafficking businesses on a global scale by using existing financial system structures and processes (such as anti-money laundering and economic sanctions frameworks) to decrease the profitability of sex and labor trafficking while increasing the risk to traffickers; 2) shift financing practices to reward businesses with good labor conditions; and 3) bolster financial resiliency of vulnerable populations and trafficking survivors through financial inclusion initiatives. During their discussion, John and Sara cover issues related to the crimes of human trafficking during the pandemic, the value of partnering with the financial sector and how to get engaged in any of a variety of projects supporting the detection and prevention of human trafficking.

Ambre Trujillo returns to Missing Frames to introduce Shawn to one of her favorite films, Ron Howard's A BEAUTIFUL MIND, starring Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly. Shawn has held a grudge against A Beautiful Mind ever since it beat The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring for Best Picture. My guest this week is Tim Stafford, who joins me to celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of the best loved and most influential albums in bluegrass.'JD Crowe & The New South' was recorded in January 1975 and released in August the same year. Tim joins me to chat about what makes it such a milestone record in bluegrass, despite it not really being a bluegrass album at all in some ways. We chat about the musicians who made it so special, including the rhythmic magic Tony Rice and JD Crowe had; why Ricky Skaggs is potentially the greatest tenor singer in bluegrass; why you it's important not to underestimate Bobby Slone's role in the band and the Jerry Douglas break on this record that was so good all three singers forgot to come back in after it!Tim also tells me why the session almost didn't happen due to Tony cutting his hand and suffering from a bad cold, plus plenty more fascinating detail about the band and the making of this record. You can see the video Tim talks about (along with the wonderful hair and shirts!) on YouTube2025 is also a big anniversary year for Tim's band Blue Highway, who turn 30 this year. Her ability to change speeds and stay composed on the mound makes her a force to be reckoned with. Challenges on the Field Despite early challenges, Gameface Gracie refused to be discouraged. She switched teams and found a new home with Explosion Softball, where she thrives. A former coach doubted her abilities and limited her opportunities due to her eye condition. Instead of giving up, Gracie switched teams and found a home with Explosion Softball, where she thrives and continues to develop her game. Her story is a reminder that perseverance in the face of adversity leads to growth and opportunity. A Multi-Sport Athlete While softball is her passion, Gracie doesn't stop there. She also plays hockey—on an all-boys team—where she holds her own and earns the respect of her teammates. Her ability to balance multiple sports and excel in each one speaks volumes about her athleticism and determination. More Than Just a Player Gameface Gracie's teammates describe her as a leader, and it's easy to see why. Roxana Hadadi, film and tv critic for Vulture and New York magazine returns to the pod for another episode about Tony Gilroy, this time looking at his screenplay for Taylor Hackford's kidnapping thriller from the year 2000,Proof of Life, starring top-billed Meg Ryan and the ascendant superstar Russell Crowe.Crowe plays Terry Thorne, an Australian K&R (Kidnap & Ransom) consultant sent down to the fictional South American Republic of Tecala to negotiate the release of an American oil company engineer (David Morse) held hostage by anti-government forces in the Andes mountains, who finds himself falling for Morse's distraught wife Meg Ryan.Proof of Life is best remembered today as the movie where Crowe and Ryan had an affair on location which doomed the movie to tabloid gossip; she was blamed for the end of her marriage to Dennis Quaid, and then for the financial failure of the film, leading to her decline as an A-list star.Proof of Life feels like a laboratory for some of Tony Gilroy's future works (for instance Crowe's character is based on a real life Australian hostage negotiator named Thomas Clayton!); viewing it through aMichael Clayton lens reveals a film that might have been better were it not for the nervousness of the studio that led them to play down the chemistry between the leads and the film's critique of co-operation between unethical corporations and corrupt governments in the Global South. It's a great example of the “Five-Star Three-Star Movie” which time sometimes helps to reveal.Over 30% of all Junk Filter episodes are only available to patrons of the podcast.
