Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, Columbia University has found itself at the center of pro-Palestinian demonstrations. Columbia is no stranger to anti-war protests. In the spring of 1968, a student uprising against the Vietnam War saw students occupy five buildings on campus and hold the acting dean of Columbia College hostage. Most recently, the arrest of Columbia protest leader Mahmoud Khalil and the university's response to policy demands from the Trump administration have found the college making national headlines again. Shea Vance is the editor-in-chief of the university's student newspaper, the “Columbia Spectator.” Vance joined NY1's Errol Louis to discuss the most recent events on campus. The conversation covered the disciplinary actions against students protesting the Israel-Hamas war, as well as the ongoing atmosphere of fear among some Jewish students due to antisemitic incidents, and the impact of federal threats on withholding university funding. The discussion also included reflections on the past and future of Columbia's student activism and Vance's personal aspirations. Higher education institutions continue to struggle with student retention, career readiness, and underemployment among graduates. Traditional college advising models focus heavily on selecting a major, yet many students graduate with empty degrees that fail to translate into meaningful careers. In this episode of Changing Higher Ed®, Dr. Drumm McNaughton speaks with Scott Carlson and Dr. Ned Scott Laff, authors of Hacking College: Why the Major Really Doesn't Matter and What Really Does, about how institutions can rethink academic advising, faculty engagement, and student success strategies to better serve today's learners. Carlson, a senior writer for the Chronicle of Higher Education, and Laff, who has over 35 years of experience in college and university settings helping students design successful undergraduate experiences, discuss how universities can shift away from a rigid, major-centric model to a personalized student success framework. They explain how students who lack career clarity often end up in underemployment, taking jobs unrelated to their degrees. Their research shows that institutions must evolve their advising structures to help students identify vocational purpose, leverage experiential learning, and navigate the hidden job market. The Problem with Traditional Academic Advising The outdated focus on major selection leads students into rigid career paths, often misaligned with their strengths and interests. A one-size-fits-all advising model leaves first-generation and low-income students struggling to navigate the complexities of higher education. Limited faculty-student engagement prevents students from leveraging university resources and professional networks. Lack of career-aligned experiential learning results in students graduating without the necessary skills and industry connections. Revolutionizing College-to-Career Transition Carlson and Laff propose a new model where higher education leaders integrate career-focused advising and faculty mentorship into the student experience. This involves: Helping students explore hidden intellectualism—their deeper interests and skills that could shape their career trajectories. Connecting students with faculty and industry professionals to uncover career pathways beyond traditional job titles. Expanding experiential learning opportunities through internships, mentorships, and project-based learning. Teaching students to research the hidden job market to discover roles they might never encounter through a standard career fair. Institutional Strategies for Student Success For university presidents, boards, and executive leaders, improving student outcomes requires a fundamental shift in how advising and faculty engagement are structured. Institutions should: Encourage faculty to act as mentors, guiding students beyond coursework to explore real-world career applications. Train advisors to support students in creating flexible, goal-oriented academic plans that integrate experiential learning. Strengthen career services by building industry partnerships and embedding career readiness into academic programming. Utilize existing institutional resources—including government affairs, research opportunities, and alumni networks—to connect students with career pathways. The Hidden Job Market and Career Readiness Career exploration should begin early in a student's academic journey. Institutions must help students develop the ability to recognize opportunities beyond traditional job titles by: Encouraging proactive networking with faculty, professionals, and industry leaders. Teaching students to research and navigate the hidden job market, where many opportunities exist outside of standard recruitment channels. Expanding experiential learning options, such as internships and project-based coursework, to provide practical experience that aligns with evolving workforce demands. With AI-driven automation threatening traditional advising roles, institutions must act now to redefine how they support student career pathways. Colleges that fail to adapt will continue to see declining retention, underemployment, and dissatisfaction among graduates. Five Takeaways for University Presidents and Boards Be Open to Change – Institutions must actively remove barriers that prevent student success. The current advising model is failing many students, and colleges need to adopt a more flexible, student-centered approach that helps learners navigate their academic and career paths effectively. Preserve Academic Variety – Colleges are eliminating liberal arts programs due to financial pressures, but this limits students' ability to create multidisciplinary educational experiences. Institutions should strive to maintain a diverse academic landscape that allows students to explore various career pathways. Engage Directly with Students – University leaders should make an effort to understand student concerns firsthand. By informally engaging with students—whether in common areas or casual settings—presidents and board members can gain valuable insights into what students need to thrive. Empower Students to Take Ownership of Their Education – Instead of following rigid degree structures, students should be encouraged to design their own academic experiences by integrating coursework, experiential learning, and industry engagement in ways that align with their career goals. Advisors and faculty should support this by shifting from a prescriptive model to one that helps students think critically about their education. Rethink Institutional Priorities – Colleges can maintain their research and tenure agendas while also fostering a culture that encourages student success. Leaders should create systems that help students perceive higher education as an interconnected network of opportunities rather than a series of disconnected courses. Higher education institutions that fail to evolve will continue to see declining retention and job placement rates. Listen in as Dr. Drumm McNaughton, Scott Carlson, and Dr. Ned Laff explore how colleges can implement meaningful advising reforms to improve student success, institutional sustainability, and long-term career outcomes. Institutions looking for solutions to align their academic programs with evolving student needs should explore Academic Realignment and Redesign strategies. On the thirty- seventh episode of ATFT, I talked with actress/ producer Michelle Calloway! While I wouldn't say this episode is explicit, there is some occasional language. Michelle Calloway is an artistic filmmaker based in Jacksonville who has been steadily working in the film industry since graduating Columbia College in Chicago with a degree in photography. She initially started working behind the camera in both film and photography but, in recent years as she has made her own films, has stepped in front of the camera. Like Richard Avedon, Michelle's short films explore the inner complexity of the human condition outwardly through visual storytelling. Michelle's sophomore short titled “Belle Isle” had a successful, worldwide festival run and earned her the award for “Best Experimental Short” at the Independent Shorts Awards in Los Angeles. Michelle has also starred in various other shorts such as “The Weary Time Traveler”, "The Resident", and “Southern Glen” but has recently made her feature film debut in Rachel Suissa's comedy Greek Mothers Never Die, which is currently in the middle of a film festival run and recently won the "Best Comedy Feature" award at the Central Florida Film Festival. Aside from her work in film, Michelle is signed with two modeling agencies, Posewell Model & Talent Management and The Peak Agency, and has been featured in commercials and advertisements. Michelle has been established as one of Jacksonville's most prominent filmmakers whose success will only continue upwards as her work ethic and genuine, singular artistry will take her far. Michelle's latest project is the drama short film, “Tallulah Park”. Named after a real park in Jacksonville, this poetic short is focused on Michelle's character Olivia as she struggles to find herself as she is haunted by her past. After a transformative chance encounter, her mindset changes leading her to seek redemption. Like Michelle's previous shorts, the internal complexity of her character is explored outwardly, but this time through found music and lyrical writing. For this project, Michelle wore three hats as she wrote, starred, and produced this film. “Tallulah Park” has just begun its film festival run and is expected to have a premiere in Jacksonville at a later date. While you're waiting for “Tallulah Park” to be released, go to LulahFilms.com to learn more about Michelle's production company as well as watch her past work! This is Michelle's first appearance on ATFT! We have been connected on Instagram for at least a year now but it wasn't until we recorded this interview that we met in person! Just by following her on Instagram, I knew Michelle was cool and authentic but when I met her in person, I saw how much of a boss she is while remaining incredibly kind. I have the utmost respect for her because of her confident attitude as well as her strong work ethic. I aspire to carry myself in this way as my shy self often hides my specificity and decisiveness. This interview was without a doubt one of the best interviews on ATFT thus far and one I have gained the most from so I am sure all creatives will take away something from listening. This episode was recorded on January 16, 2025. In this episode, Michelle talks about the evolution of her artistry between photography and film through the years. Even though Michelle claims she is not a cinephile, she certainly knows some hidden gems which turns into a game throughout this episode. Michelle also talks about how her initial fear of acting transformed her, working with Brittany Murphy on one of her last films, and how she has turned her creative work into a successful business. All this and much more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.
Born in 1966 in San Antonio, TX, King Williams was moved around a lot as a young lad. The moves landed the family in Glenview, IL, a suburb of Chicago. After overcoming the urge to pronounce the “S” at the end of “Illinois”, he moved more freely in northern society and came to genuinely love the city itself. In that time, the need to play music reared its spiny head and he learned how to play bass. Sinking his teeth into it, he became somewhat competent and enjoys playing to this day. King noted, however, that that wasn't likely to provide a steady income, so he created a fall back plan, becoming a recording engineer. A short stint at Columbia College under renown engineer and curmudgeon Malcom Chisholm gave king much of what he'd need to succeed as a recordist, though it was as yet unrealized. These two career paths crisscrossed and caromed off each other, but the lure of steadier work as an engineer eventually landed King a job in Nashville, TN at famed RCA recording studio “A”, then known as “Javelina Recording”. After a few years of that, King went freelance and spent much of his time at local houses such as OceanWay, The Tracking Room and, Sound Emporium. In 2004, King was approached by recently minted Music Director at The Grand Ole Opry, Steve Gibson, to join the staff as broadcast and post production mixer. King was hired on and had been the responsible engineer for that seat for the last 20 years, and will likely still be in that chair through The Opry's 100th anniversary, which will be celebrated throughout 2025."Still on the Run" - https://www.fbrmusic.com/Host - Trey MitchellIG - treymitchellphotography IG - feeding_the_senses_unsensoredFB - facebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848Threads - www.threads.net/@treymitchellphotographySponsorship Information/Guest Suggestions - ftsunashville@gmail.com

Joe and Lori talk the election results and how music and the Nov 22nd party at Metro will empower our House Music Community. Joe Shanahan began his journey in artistic propriety as a Columbia College graduate with a keen ear for the underground music shaking Chicago's musical core. Shanahan spent his post-collegiate years trekking to New York and London to experience the happenings redefining the global arts community. He returned with an “act local, think global” business philosophy and an urge to fill the void in his home city's art scene. Shanahan began throwing fringe gatherings in his loft, but soon the crowds, and his ambition, grew too large for the space. What a wonderful opportunity to chat with the incredible musical improv genius, Mike Descoteaux. I've been lucky enough to call him a friend over a decade! He was creator and head of the Music Program at The Second City Training Center, music director of the Second City ETC stage in Chicago, and full-time artistic director/executive director of several New England nonprofit arts and comedy organizations. His work has been seen on NBC, A&E, WGN, WGBH and stages around the globe. https://karolinaadams.com/ https://www.instagram.com/karolina.adams/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100041266845687 Karolina Adams is an artist who illustrates life as it plays out in her head. With a B.F.A for Interior Architecture from Columbia College, she entered the field only to discover that mundane space planning and office environment were too rigid for her free spirit. In 2012 Karolina found her sketch book from college, submitted her drawings to a gallery and got accepted. Two other galleries soon followed. Karolina calls herself an introspective artist, meaning she purges her emotions with inks and graphite onto paper. Throughout her artwork, which includes acrylic paintings, two books and reflection cards, there is a striped socks character used to depict her feelings, emotions and stories. Her art “talks” about love and the happy moments that come with it, and life's struggles and triumphs. Her work visually expresses what it is to be human, depicting emotions in a raw and relatable way that resonate. She says when people view her work, they aren't studying the brushstrokes or the play of light on a subject; they are studying their own struggles, their own blessings, and their own heart. Karolina sketches, draws, and/or paints every day. Creativity, she says, recharges her and fuels her spirit. She calls her work quirky with a touch of sophistication, which reflects her playful, at times scrambled, character on the surface with an intense and serious core. Karolina has been a permanent gallery artist in Scottsdale and Tubac, AZ for the past three years and just recently became part of the Wit Gallery in MA. In addition, she has exhibited her work at Fountain Hills, AZ, Gilbert AZ, and Chicago IL.

Italy born producer and modular synthesist David Castellani is an aficionado in all things modular with a focus on driving, contemporary techno. His sound, fuelled by an array of analog hardware, showcases the intricate aspects of modern music production, while staying true to the fundamentals. Having formerly cut his teeth in a DJ/Producer duo, David has already built a category of healthy releases, collaborations and remixes, while sharing the decks with industry heavies including Nastia, Mark Broom, Dense & Pika & Vril, to name a few. Now based in LA by way of Chicago, Castellani launched his record label Noetic in 2021, cultivating smart & dynamic techno with a focus on synthesizers and analog hardware. The label has curated eleven releases from Castellani so far, featuring remixes from Redshape, Matrixxman, Voiski & Etapp Kyle. Castellani's journey in music has been marked by two guiding principles – passion and learning, including exploration of world cultures. He uses the didgeridoo, part of ancient First Nation Australian culture which he respectfully acknowledges, in his live sets. He was taught drums by respected Afro Cuban percussionist Juma Santos, who featured on the legendary Miles Davis album ‘Bitches Brew'. The experience of working with Santos has stayed with him till this day. “It was one of the most vivid memories of my youth. We just spent hours playing drums together and then we'd indulge in some cannabis while Juma would share stories about hanging out with Miles Davis in the 70's. I was about 17 and remember travelling home, thinking how excited I was to start this new journey in music. And most of all, this helped me understand the value of education via a proper teacher within music.” Castellani would go on to be an educator himself, thriving as a teacher at Chicago's respected Columbia College, where he'd teach for almost a decade. His passion for educating is something that stays with him till this day, involved in running modular synth workshops in LA in collaboration with the RE/FORM crew, with whom he holds a residency. He also volunteers with the Jazz Angels, an outreach program that sees him go into schools and help children record and learn about music. His passion and curiosity for all things learning, creativity and technological development has seen him create his own sequencer module, the Precision Disrupter. His background in graphic design also sees a collaboration with clothing brand After Infinite, responsible for designing all their rave wear garments. A magnetic live performer, recent highlights include a special 360-degree audio-visual performance in LA alongside Colin Benders and ONYVAA; a coveted spot playing Chicago's Arc Festival and the release of his collaborative project ‘Hysteria Dichotic' with AnnMarie Arcuri, which combined techno, contemporary dance, modular synthesis and film. Castellani wishes to acknowledge that First Nations Australians are the traditional owners of the didgeridoo, a wind instrument he uses in his live sets. He pays his respects to all First Nations people. Dad jokes -- the gift that keeps on giving? Today on our month-long "Odd News+" series we look at a new survey that suggests having a laugh can be good for the whole family. Plus, Warner Bros Discovery makes an announcement and a new look at a classic statue. A study conducted by both Penn State University and Columbia College in Chicago examined the use of humor in a parent/child relationship. The results seem to be good news for all those Dad jokes out there. Warner Bros Discovery has made a name for itself – and not a good one – when it comes to their track record on films. We poke a bit of fun at that concept. Nothing says funny like a jab at a piece of sculpture. Twice-burned-once in love and once by the sun-he faces a host of challenges to his self-appointed sense of identity. Sunburn, bad sushi, a Sinatra karaoke contest, and the road rage fury of a woman scorned are but a few of the trials Vincent will endure while facing the ultimate test to his monosexuality-a new woman in his life. About Dean Monti Dean Monti started writing at age two, but nothing really legible until age five. Welcome to Episode 2 of SEC Baseball Weekly with Chris Lee, Alfred Ezman, and Graham Doty, an SEC baseball podcast that discusses the biggest storylines in the conference all year long. We'll cover the biggest/trending topics, featuring fun and interesting guest interviews, season predictions, player and team SEC trivia, and a wide range of various unique segments. Chris, Alfred, and Graham cover several topics in our second episode of SEC baseball weekly, including: Who's going No. 1? (Charlie Condon, Travis Bazzana, surprise?) It looks like four SEC guys in top 10 (Condon, Jac Caglianone, Hagen Smith, Braden Montgomery). The SEC could add six more current first-rounders (Christian Moore, Jurrangelo Cijintje, Tommy White, Ryan Waldschmidt, Billy Amick, Dakota Jordan). And maybe others (Drew Beam, Bryce Cunningham, Luke Holman, Ben Hess) too. Several more top-100 picks (Blake Burke, Jared Thomas, Ryan Prager, Gage Jump, Carter Holton, Kavares Tears, Cole Messina, Chris Cortez, Gage Miller, Khal Stephen, Colby Shelton, Peyton Stovall). LSU commit Derek Curiel took his name out; he could have gone in the top four rounds. LSU will watch the first round closely as three commits--SS/OF Konnor Griffin, LHP Cam Caminiti, RHP William Schmidt--all get first-round grades. Ole Miss OF commit Slade Caldwell will probably forego college. Texas 2B/SS Theo Gillen and Florida SS Kellon Lindsey are also commits who could see their names called in the first round. Tennessee has at least six commitments who could be picked in the top 250 picks, while LSU could see as many as eight drafted there. The latest transfer portal news, including Jace LaViolette, Justin Lamkin and Caden Sorrell returning to Texas A&M. Texas Tech transfer Gavin Kash commits to Texas A&M, but he's a draft risk. Kennesaw State transfer Tanner Franklin commits to Tennessee, as does Gavin Kilen (Louisville). Clemson transfer Nolan Nawrocki commits to South Carolina. Stetson OF Kyle Jones commits to Florida. Georgia lands pitcher JT Quinn from Ole Miss. Cayden Nicolletto from Columbia College commits to Missouri. Pitcher Logan Lunceford leaves Missouri. Ole Miss lands Rayn Moerman (Illinois), Collin Reuter (BYU) LSU lands pitcher Zac Cowan (Wofford) and outfielder Chris Stanfield (Auburn). Mississippi State lands two-way USC Upstate transfer Noah Sullivan. Texas lands Thomas Burns from Arizona State. And Vanderbilt loses second baseman/DH Cam Kozeal. The College Baseball Showdown field is released, and it includes Texas and Ole Miss, plus Clemson, Louisville, Oklahoma State and Arizona. In June, the Houston Astros College Classic; Tennessee, Mississippi State and Texas A&M will face Oklahoma State, Rice and Arizona. 0:00 Intro 3:20 SEC In The MLB Draft 39:51 Transfer Portal News 51:03 College Baseball Tournament Announcements FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA Daily Newsletter: https://se14.substack.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/14Southeastern Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/southeastern14_/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@secsports14 ADVERTISE WITH SOUTHEASTERN 14 Reach out to caroline.smith@southeastern14.com to find out how your product or service can be seen by over 150,000 unique viewers each month!

This episode will address important "inside" information on funerals, burials, and cremation from a death care professional, Heather Leigh - General Manager of Greenhaven Memorial Gardens in Columbia, South Carolina. But she brings even more expertise from her background as an academic where she taught a course on death and dying for the Child and Family Studies program at Columbia College, Columbia, South Carolina. This week's guest is journalist Abigail Shrier. In her new book, Bad Therapy: Why The Kids Aren't Growing Up, she delves into why so many children, teens, and young adults have received mental health diagnoses over the last few decades. Is it because society is finally recognizing emotional suffering? Or is it because society has become irrationally fixated on the idea of suffering? Abigail says it's the latter, and in this conversation, she talks about how mediocre clinicians, flawed research, overzealous prescribing of medications, and, above all, a cultural obsession with trauma and emotional injury are causing unnecessary misery. GUEST BIO Abigail Shrier's new book is the best-selling Bad Therapy: Why The Kids Aren't Growing Up. She is also the author of the best-selling 2020 book Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters, which was named a “Best Book” by the Economist and the Times of London and has been translated into ten languages. She holds an A.B. from Columbia College, where she received the Euretta J. Kellett Fellowship; a B.Phil. from the University of Oxford; and a J.D. from Yale Law School.
