Greg shares his background in public service, education, and government, and provides an in-depth look at the recently released 2025 IREAD scores—Indiana's critical assessment for third-grade literacy. Together, they discuss the state's post-pandemic progress, key education policy priorities, and the strong results from Indiana's non-public schools.Key Takeaways: Meet Greg Harrell: Greg's roots in southern Indiana, his career path from state government to education advocacy, and his passion for policy and school choice. What is IREAD? Overview of Indiana's IREAD test for third graders: Origins, purpose, and why it matters. The evolution of the assessment since its 2013 implementation. The 2025 IREAD Results: Statewide increase: Over 87% of third graders passed, hitting pre-pandemic levels. Record gains: Largest year-over-year improvement since the test's creation, with about 6,000 more students passing compared to last year. Non-public schools shine: 96% proficiency rate for Indiana's private schools. Factors Driving Improvement: $170 million invested since 2022 in literacy initiatives (public and philanthropic funding, including from Lilly Endowment). Earlier identification and support: Second graders now take IREAD, helping educators identify and assist struggling students sooner. Looking Forward: The Department of Education's ambitious goal: 95% of third graders passing IREAD by 2027. Ongoing policy priorities: Defending school choice, reducing unnecessary regulation, and tweaking programs for better outcomes in the 2026 legislative session. Why School Choice Matters: Greg's personal perspective on the evolution and importance of educational choice in Indiana. The alignment between K-12 and higher education in empowering families and students with options. Did you find this episode informative? Help us out! Greg Harrell-Edge is the founder of Proimpact Project, which is "Supporting nonprofit leaders with content and a community to scale impact." Greg talks to host Steve Boland about the need for early response, and more frequent responses, when nonprofits and social good missions are attacked. Keeping the tone authentic about your work and the real impact of your work, helps shift the conversation away from demonizing the whole sector. Greg mentions his influence in emphasis on impact from Dan Pallotta's TED talk. Greg further suggests tying fundraising support messages when appropriate, with speedy reactions helping to close funding gaps which may be caused, in part, but these attacks. Greg also cites the variable calls to action and results in campaigns such as Kony 2012.

A small adjustment in the language you use can make a big impact on your outcomes. A lot of nonprofits, in fact, MOST nonprofits, talk about donations in terms of “gifts”. This tees up a certain dynamic – one with low expectations which can reduce the frequency and volume of said “gift”. My guest today is Greg Harrell-Edge, the Executive Director at CoachArt. He and his team have completely reimagined how they talk about donations to reframe the narrative to one with heightened expectations, resulting in an increase in revenue and engagement with their donors.Instead of simply being a donor who gives a gift to the organization, CoachArt uses language framed around “investment” language. They talk about IPOs and ROI and use similar language that transitions the relationship they are building with their stakeholders from one that is a one-way exchange of value into one where there is increased interest and investment in the outcomes, creating more of a two-way relationship with donors. This was an incredibly fascinating conversation jam-packed with valuable insights that can be applied to any organization's playbook.Links: https://coachart.org/Surveymonkey Audience: https://www.surveymonkey.com/market-research/solutions/audience-panel/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gregharrelledge/Expectations vs. Agreements: https://relishstudio.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Expectation-vs-Agreement.mp3Ask: Head to CoachArt's website and Join our Impact Investment Club
Be inspired and encouraged by this message from Elder Greg Harrell to Fear Not in these difficult times.
When Greg Harrell-Edge first joined CoachArt, they were doing great work in the Los Angeles area. They knew that there were so many more kids who could benefit from their services, but with their current systems, it was taking 7 hours to match one child to a volunteer. In the last 5 years since Greg joined, CoachArt has quadrupled impact, doubled revenue, quintupled cash reserves and have now gone nationwide. The journey began with questions about what was holding them back, and what it would look like if they could grow. That led them to exploring and adopting technology and dramatically changing their story. Greg joins us to talk through the challenges they faced, successes they've realized and how other organizations can adopt innovation into their own strategy. ** Episode Links and Shownotes: https://nphf.show/ep40 ** What we'll be discussing: • Identifying the bottlenecks and obstacles in a nonprofit's work • The growth questions every nonprofit should be asking • Developing and adopting tech solutions that help you scale without breaking the budget • Persevering in the face of pushback and setbacks • The impact of innovation on culture and fundraising
