05-31-26 Honoring God in Marriage - Colossians 3:18-19 by Woodlawn Baptist Church
IntroductionPeople bring criticism against the Reformed people's love for doctrine. People claim that if you go to a Reformed church, you will see that we are people concerned with the head, not the heart. That our catechisms and confessions are cold documents. These are documents fueling intellectual exercises that keep doctrine tidy but leave the soul unmoved. That we know about God without actually knowing him.The Heidelberg Catechism, Lord's Day 13, communicates to us that God is very personal. In fact, we are brought into the Lord's family. We are adopted as sons for the sake of our faithful Savior. We were the estranged children who had been brought near to God through the faithful son. So, is it fair to say that we are people who love doctrine and not the Lord? Is it fair to say that the Reformed faith makes one distant in relation to God? Children by AdoptionThe catechism is careful to distinguish between Christ's sonship and ours. Christ is the Son from eternity who is not created, not adopted, but of the same essence as the Father. When we confess the only begotten Son, we are saying that Christ is of the same nature as the Father. He has not sinned or done anything wrong. He is eternal, having the same attributes and nature as the Father. We are sons by adoption. And we need to be very encouraged by this. In the ancient world, adoption was not a consolation prize. In Roman law and in the Old Testament background, an adopted son received full inheritance rights. Abram understood this in Genesis 15, when he offered Eliezer of Damascus as an option to be an heir. Eliezer was not merely a faithful servant, but Abraham requested him to be the heir. Abraham is offering God an easy option, and not the challenge to bring a son through two elderly people without children. And Paul presses this further in verse 14. He declares that all who are led by the Spirit are sons of God. This language is important because all in the Spirit are sons possessing full inheritance. Note that firstborn sons are the ones who receive the greatest portion. Whatever your gender, whatever your genealogy, if you have the Spirit, you share in the inheritance of the eternal firstborn Son of God. You have done nothing to earn it. You have done everything to forfeit it. However, Christ, as a faithful son, secured His people to be coheirs with him as firstborn children. This love that the Father has for his children goes clear to the core of our heart. Why Submit to God? The Freedom of the RedeemedOur culture does not love submission. Even the word sounds like loss. But Paul reframes the question entirely in verse 15: you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear.Paul has already named the alternative. Living by the flesh is death. We see that in the fall. No, they did not fall dead, but they immediately broke fellowship with God. They were naked and ashamed. They thought they would find freedom in their rebellion, but they discovered that being estranged from God is a problem. Christ, washing the disciples' feet in John 13, says something remarkable to Peter: “ You are already clean.” Christ makes this declaration even before Christ is raised from the dead. Christ's work is so certain that he assures his disciples of its benefit before it is officially confirmed. The disciples consciously know who Christ is, but they need to rest in his cleansing. John Murray captured it well: in Christ, we have moved from the courtroom to the family room. The legal question is settled. Yes, affirming with the head, but resting in the heart. Honoring God without TerrorIf submission sounds like an obligation, honoring God can sound like performance. We can think that we better make sure we earn our Lord's favor. We have to make sure that we are doing the right things to prevent the Lord smiting us or harming us in some way. Paul does not want people to have this mindset of the Lord's grace and mercy. He tells us in verse 15 that we have received the spirit of adoption, by which we cry Abba, Father. This is the same word Christ uses in Gethsemane. This is the time of his greatest anguish, of going to the cross. Christ is vulnerable; this is his darkest moment as he is about to face hell, and in this time of need, he cries out, “Abba.” We call on our heavenly Father as Christ calls on His Father. This is more like Dad rather than “master” or “Father.” It is communicating to us that we are brought near in the family in such a way that we have God's attention. The reason we want to honor God is not out of dread. Rather, when we consider the inheritance, we see that we are: heirs of God, fellow heirs with Christ. Not servants who have earned their way up. Not subordinate sons who receive a smaller portion. Fellow heirs. Co-heirs with the one who never sinned, never failed, and never rebelled. Christ does not gloat over his success, but rather freely shares everything he has merited with those who deserved none of it. Yes, we do consciously profess this with our minds, but the Spirit works in our hearts to see the joy of the new life. So, we cannot divorce the head from the heart. ConclusionThe Heidelberg Catechism seeks to bring out the implications of being brought near to God. The Heidelberg Catechism is not a cold document. It is a document written for people who need to know who they are. People who feel the weight of sin and ask whether God is really on their side. People who wonder whether submission to Christ is freedom or just a nicer version of slavery. The Heidelberg Catechism summarizes Romans 8 with the assurance that you are not a servant who performed well enough to be elevated. You are not an orphan who has been adopted by an abusive or lonely father. You are an adopted child of the living God, a co-heir with his faithful Son, indwelt by the Spirit who prods you toward life and away from death. We honor God, then, not because we have conceded that a terrible master is preferable to a really abusive one. We honor him because he is ours, and we are his, and the inheritance is already secured in the one who went to the cross knowing exactly what the wrath of God costs. He knows the cost and went anyway. He did so in order to make sure we all share in his inheritance. Our life lived before the face of God is not an obligation, but a joy.
Journey into some of the most tender and powerful stories of faith in this moving episode of Handmaidens, Harems, and Heroines with Lynne Hilton Wilson. Focusing on the Book of Ruth and the opening chapters of 1 Samuel, Lynne explores the lives of extraordinary covenant women whose loyalty, sacrifice, and trust in God changed the course of Israel's history. At the heart of the episode is Ruth—a Moabite widow whose devotion to her mother-in-law Naomi stands as one of the most beautiful expressions of covenant loyalty in scripture. Lynne unpacks Ruth's courageous choice to leave everything behind, her humble faith as she gleans in the fields, and her eventual redemption through Boaz, the kinsman-redeemer. Together, their story becomes a powerful symbol of belonging, divine providence, and the inclusive reach of God's covenant. The episode also turns to Hannah, a woman of deep sorrow and even deeper faith. Through her heartfelt prayers and unwavering devotion, Hannah becomes the mother of Samuel, one of Israel's greatest prophets. Lynne explores Hannah's covenant with God, her willingness to consecrate her long-awaited son, and the spiritual foundation she provides for Samuel's prophetic calling. With insight and compassion, Lynne weaves these stories together to highlight how women—often overlooked—play central roles in God's unfolding plan. This episode offers a rich, inspiring look at faith, family, redemption, and the quiet strength of covenant discipleship.

Honoring mothers is deeply connected to honoring God’s design, care, and provision for our lives. In 1 Timothy 2:15, Scripture highlights the sacred role of motherhood and reminds us that God values faith, love, holiness, and perseverance within it. In a culture that often minimizes motherhood or focuses only on parental imperfections, this devotional calls believers back to a biblical perspective of gratitude, forgiveness, and honor. Highlights God commands us to honor our fathers and mothers as an act of obedience. Motherhood is a sacred calling established by God. Many mothers carry hidden struggles while doing their best to raise their children. Honoring mothers reflects our reverence and obedience toward God. Forgiveness may be necessary in strained mother-child relationships. Scripture emphasizes faith, love, holiness, and perseverance in motherhood. Choosing honor over resentment brings healing and glorifies God. Have an idea for our newsletter? We want to hear from you! Take our survey below: Take Our Survey! Do you want to listen ad-free? Full Transcript Below: Honoring God by Honoring Our Mothers By Lynette Kittle Bible Reading: “But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.” - 1Timothy 2:15 It seems like these days many women are resisting the call to motherhood and forgoing having children. At the same time, bitterness towards mothers is also on the rise, with too many adult children resenting their mothers’ noble yet imperfect attempts at mothering, looking at their flaws and weaknesses more than their strengths and sacrifices. But even if the world turns its back on mothers and motherhood, believers in Jesus Christ are called to embrace motherhood and honor their mothers, respecting God’s design and plan for motherhood, and the place of honor He has given them on earth. God cares about how we treat, speak to, and speak about our mothers and mothers-in-law. It matters to Him because, as His family, it reflects on Him how we treat and speak about them. As the Apostle Paul explained in Ephesians 6:2-3, “‘Honor your father and mother’—which is the first commandment with a promise—so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” So grave was it under Old Testament law to dishonor one’s mother and father that it brought deathly punishment. “Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death” (Exodus 21:17). Even if our mothers have totally failed us, God calls us to forgive them and to recognize the God-ordained sacredness of them carrying us to life in their own bodies. Author and speaker Joyce Meyers shares how her mother failed to protect her growing up from her father’s sexual abuse. In many ways, she found it harder to forgive her mother than her father. Still, in her parents’ later years, God called Joyce to care for them, something she initially resisted. But even for mothers who have totally failed us in life, God calls us to honor Him by honoring them, even if they don’t deserve it. Most women begin motherhood with little to no experience, learning and growing as they go, starting out as greenhorns and discovering along the way how to handle the endless hours of motherhood’s tremendous responsibilities. Too many women enter motherhood with unaddressed and often unknown issues in their own lives, revealing underlying weaknesses and issues they may have no real understanding of or skill to handle. Because it is a trial-and-error sort of relationship, sadly, some mothers feel like failures long before their children grow up and point fingers at their mothering deficiencies. Still, even in their weaknesses and failures, and regardless of their struggles and faults, mothers are treasured and loved by God. We are commanded to honor the position God has given them on the earth. As ons and daughters, God calls us to honor Him by honoring our mothers. Doing so is an act of obedience and glorifies God. Intersecting Faith & Life: Are you honoring your mother this year? What about your mother-in-law? If you’re finding it difficult to do so for various reasons, ask God to help you honor Him by honoring them this Mother’s Day. As well, if you’ve disrespected them in the past, ask for their forgiveness so you can begin anew in your relationship with them. This week, Pastor Jeremiah walks us through a moment when David glimpses God's holiness.
Everyone is being formed by something. The question is: what is shaping you? In Acts 21, Paul demonstrates how to exercise compassion without compromising truth, sometimes surrendering personal freedom for the gospel's sake. With humility toward Christ and hunger for His Word, we can honor God authentically while building bridges in our broken world.
Dr. Tim Sperduto - Ephesians 6:1-4
Social media outlets in our country have become places of toxic animosity, left vs. right, conservative vs. liberal/progressive, and often the target of our loathing is whomever is in power. Legislators, governors, jurists, presidents--all receive the venom of their opponents. But is that how Christians should conduct themselves in relation to those who have authority over our lives? And do they really have authority over our lives? Pastor Mollenkopf highlights how Christians ought to conduct themselves regarding those who are in leadership over us.
Jim Murphy preaches on the topic of stewardship of everything we have for the kingdom of God.
Episode Summary:In this episode of Church Is Messy, Rick and Svea return to 1 Corinthians—specifically chapter 6—to tackle the complex and often uncomfortable topic of sexuality. They explore how the Corinthian church was shaped by its culture, where distorted views of the body and sex were normalized, and connect that to how modern culture similarly “disciples” us today. The conversation highlights a biblical vision of sexuality as something good, sacred, and deeply connected to our spiritual lives—not separate from them. Rick and Svea clarify that while the Bible may not function like a rulebook, it consistently points to God's design: faithful, lifelong covenant between one man and one woman in the covenant of marriage, while honestly portraying the brokenness that deviates from it.They also emphasize that people's views of sexuality are often shaped by early experiences they didn't choose, but through Jesus, there is always an opportunity to move forward without shame and pursue a better way. The episode underscores that our bodies matter—that we are “temples of the Holy Spirit”—and that how we live physically reflects our faith.Ultimately, the discussion calls listeners to be aware of the cultural “algorithms” shaping them, to take formation seriously, and to embrace a higher, more holistic vision of sexuality and the body—one rooted in grace, intentionality, and following Jesus. Your body is not ordinary. It is God's temple. In this message, Art Bastes reminds us that the Holy Spirit dwells within believers, making our bodies sacred. Because we were bought with a price, we are called to steward our health, choices, and habits in a way that honors Christ. Through Scripture and personal testimony, we're challenged to stop neglecting what God calls holy and to live with intentionality, self control, and reverence. Blot out what defiles. Build what strengthens. Do it all for the glory of God.
It’s easy to think of “creation care” as optional—important, maybe, but not especially spiritual. This devotional challenges that assumption by reminding us that God’s relationship with humanity has always included stewardship of the world He made. In Genesis, God plants a garden and places humankind there with a clear purpose: to work it and take care of it. That means creation care isn’t a modern trend—it’s part of our original calling. The devotional begins with a striking, everyday example: artificial light can disorient migrating birds, drawing them off course and increasing the risk of collisions and exhaustion. Small choices we barely notice—turning on outdoor lights, decorating with strings of bulbs—can have real impact on the creatures around us. And on a broader scale, issues like pollution, deforestation, habitat loss, and harmful pesticides remind us that creation is groaning under the weight of sin and brokenness. Romans 8 describes nature’s longing for renewal, tied to God’s ultimate restoration of all things. The key shift the devotional emphasizes is this: dominion is not permission to destroy. God’s authority is marked by justice, mercy, and faithful care, and because we are made in His image, our leadership over creation should reflect His character. Everything belongs to God—“the earth is the Lord’s”—so our stewardship becomes a form of worship. The way we treat the environment is connected to the way we honor the Creator. While we may not control large systems or global decisions, we do have influence in our daily lives. The devotional offers practical examples of faithful stewardship: reducing nighttime light exposure, making windows safer for birds, planting trees, creating pesticide-free pollinator gardens, treating animals well, and picking up litter. These aren’t small, meaningless actions—they are tangible ways to imitate God’s compassion and justice. And they can become reminders of hope: God has broken sin’s curse through Christ and promises a future renewal for creation and for us. Main Takeaways Creation care is a biblical calling rooted in God’s original design for humanity. Everyday choices can affect the environment and the creatures around us more than we realize. Dominion is meant to reflect God’s character—leadership marked by mercy, justice, and care. Stewardship is worship: the earth belongs to God, so how we treat it honors Him. Practical, local actions matter and point us toward hope in God’s future renewal. Today’s Bible Verse “Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil … The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” - Genesis 2:8-9, 15, NIV Your Daily Prayer Here is a brief excerpt from today’s prayer: “Help me to [steward] in a way that glorifies You… May I… care for [creation] as an extension of my love for You.” You can listen to the full prayer here or read the devotional at the links below. Honoring God When Life Hurts: Why He Doesn't Waste Your Pain If God is good… why does obedience still hurt? Why do faithful Christians suffer cancer, loss, miscarriage, and heartbreak? In this episode I'm speaking with Clay Jones and Jean E. Jones about how Christians can glorify God in the worst of times. We're not offering easy answers or shallow promises. We're talking honestly about suffering—what Scripture actually says, what the church often gets wrong, and how God uses pain not to destroy faith, but to refine it. Drawing from their personal struggles, we'll explore how Christians can honor God even when it hurts—and why your suffering is never wasted in God's hands.

Life is filled with endless choices, responsibilities, and opportunities—yet time remains limited. Whether you’re facing a full to-do list, standing at a crossroads, or simply longing for your days to feel purposeful, God invites you to seek His wisdom. James 1:5 assures us that when we ask God for guidance, He gives generously and without judgment. Honoring God with our time begins by going to Him first—listening, waiting, and trusting His direction. Even when clarity feels delayed, we can rest in the confidence that God is at work and will guide each step as we surrender our plans to Him. Main Takeaways You’ll learn why discerning how to spend your time begins with seeking God’s wisdom. Discover how waiting on God can sometimes be the most faithful response. Understand why uncertainty doesn’t mean failure, but often invites deeper trust. Reflect on how God works through both action and stillness to accomplish His will. Be encouraged that when you are in Christ, God redeems and guides every moment. Bible Verse References James 1:5 – https://www.biblestudytools.com/james/1-5.html Romans 8:28 (referenced conceptually) – https://www.biblestudytools.com/romans/8-28.html Your Daily Prayer Dear Lord, You are sovereign over my time, my choices, and my days. Teach me to seek Your wisdom daily and surrender my plans to You. When I feel uncertain, help me wait patiently and trust that You are working even in the silence.
