As the founder of "95 Wisconsin," an initiative aimed at ensuring that 95% of children attain reading proficiency, she addressed the pressing reading crisis in Milwaukee. During the interview, Kinser emphasized the critical need to focus on children's education and enhance reading programs. She pointed out the negative consequences of discontinuing phonics instruction in schools, which has led to significant reading difficulties among students. Currently, only 30% of children are proficient in reading, a decline attributed to the removal of the phonics program, leaving 70% unable to read. In response to questions about the priorities of children compared to those of the teachers' union, Kinser indicated her intention to emulate the approach of County Executive David Crowley and others. She also showcased her support alongside Brad Schimmel and reaffirmed her dedication to working collaboratively with the teachers' union, parents, and children. Ms. Kinser stated that her counter part Dr. Underly lowered the standards for kids to appear smarter when in actuality it's hurting the children, because they aren't getting the resources to learn correctly. The campus protests over conflict in Israel and Gaza have engulfed universities, and led to the resignation of several university presidents. In this podcast, recorded live at the New York Institute of the Humanities, Michael S. Roth, the long-time President of Wesleyan College, explains how he navigates sharp disagreements on campus, what he means by “safe enough spaces,” and how to understand what is happening on campus in relation to our democracy. Michael S. Roth is the 16th president of Wesleyan University, since 2007. Formerly president of California College of the Arts (CCA), Roth is known as a historian, curator, author and public advocate for liberal education. His many books include Beyond the University: Why Liberal Education Matters (Yale University Press, 2014); Safe Enough Spaces: A Pragmatist's Approach to Inclusion, Free Speech, and Political Correctness (Yale University Press, 2019); and The Student: A Short History (Yale University Press, 2023). This conversation was recorded with a live audience at the New York Institute for the Humanities, which is directed by Eric Banks and hosted by the New York Public Library. I want to thank Eric Banks for the invitation to speak with President Roth, and the fellows of the New York Institute for a lively discussion included here. Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode of Education Matters with MySchoolOptions, host Cesar Roman is joined by two leading voices in the education policy arena: Betsy Wiley, President and CEO of the Institute for Quality Education, and Robert Enlow, President and CEO of Ed Choice. Together, they dive into the recent media debate surrounding the Indiana voucher program and school choice efforts across the country. The conversation highlights the evolution of school choice in Indiana, particularly through the voucher system, and its role in expanding educational opportunities for families. Betsy and Robert break down the common misconceptions about school vouchers and explain how these programs empower parents, particularly in underserved communities. They also discuss the future of school choice, the importance of charter schools and private schools, and the critical need for educational freedom. Takeaways School choice is rapidly growing, reshaping the landscape of education policy in the U.S. The Indiana voucher program, launched in 2011, has seen significant progress, offering more students access to diverse educational options. Vouchers allow funding to follow the student rather than being tied to the institution. Charter schools and private schools play a vital role in the school choice ecosystem, increasing diversity and innovation in education. Misconceptions about school vouchers often stem from misunderstanding how the system works and its benefits for families. The future of school choice in Indiana could see a move toward universal eligibility, providing every family the opportunity to choose the best education for their child. Milton Friedman's ideas on education continue to influence school choice advocates, pushing for innovation and entrepreneurship in education. Did you find this episode informative? Help us out!
