Me and Matt are buddies from a long time ago and we have been podcasting together for like a decade, he's an incredibly smart guy and he's also a History Guy. We talked about reenactors, collectors and weird internet guys who wish they were at some greusome battles! It was a pure joy to do this in the same room and also do a show with a different feel. Matt is @Cushbomb on twitter and he is one of the hosts of Chapo Trap House and Hell on Earth Music by Zacharay Fairbrother @avantlard on twitter

This episode is the second part of the three episodes series about communication and marketing on NASA and the space programs. I had a fantastic conversation with Richard Jurek about George Low, the man who wrote the report on President Kennedy's desk when the administrator was looking for a big project after the Bay of Pigs to turn things around. Richard, a marketing and public relations executive, is an author and space historian. He is the co-author of the critically acclaimed "Marketing the Moon: The Selling of the Apollo Lunar Program" (MIT Press, 2014) with David Meerman Scott, and a frequent article contributor to the Smithsonian's Air & Space magazine and website. He is a sought-after commentator and speaker on NASA history, especially concerning its historic public affairs efforts and pioneering brand journalism. He has appeared internationally in media outlets such as Forbes, Slate, NBC News, CBS News, Canadian Public Radio, Australian Public Radio, National Public Radio’s Market Place, BackStory with the History Guys, and The Joy Cardin Show. In addition to being a regular guest on the Science Channel’s NASA: Unexplained Files, he is also a consulting producer on the PBS/American Experience mini-series Chasing The Moon (July, 2019) by award-winning filmmaker Robert Stone. Jurek’s latest space history book is The Ultimate Engineer: The Remarkable Life of NASA’s Visionary Leader George M. Low (University of Nebraska Press, 2019).During this amazing conversation, Richard describes NASA's engineer's fantastic job, responsible for helping the US spaceflight advance and creating a system to ensure safety and excellence during the entire program. He also talked about Low's understanding of branding and how brilliantly he cut through the noise and made his voice being heard in a place where everyone was talking at the same time. Some Questions I Ask:Can you tell us a little bit about George and his life as a refugee during World War II? (2:15)How did he come up with writing this document that inspired John F Kennedy to say "We're going to the Moon within 10 years"? (8:23)If you look at the way he engaged the politicians, what have you learned from that? (35:46)From the time he wrote the report to Kennedy, he's been in every central decision point in the NASA program, right? What did George Low mean by saying, "Avoid the smartest person in the room fallacy"? (50:46)In This Episode, You Will Learn:The Silicon Valley people of the '50s (7:41)The best writers listen before they speak and think before they write (16:21)Visiting contractors at night, uninvited, and making them accountable (22:32)The door that couldn't be opened and its lessons. From the persecution of Quakers in colonial Massachusetts, to 21st century battles over nativity scenes in public squares, the wall separating church and state is hardly set in stone. On this episode of BackStory, the History Guys explore the often blurry line between church and state in America - from Congress’ attempts to block the first Mormon Senator in the early 1900’s, to the federal government’s imprisonment of religious pacifists who refused to fight in the first world war. If the record TV viewership of the Clinton-Trump presidential debates is any guide, voter turnout for the November election could reach levels not seen since the Gilded Age. It’s easy to be nostalgic for the consistently high voter turnout in the late 19th century, until you consider all the people who weren’t eligible to vote back then. In this episode of BackStory, the History Guys look at voting trends - from the changing mechanisms of voting to how the electoral college system maintained racial hierarchies in the South. The 2016 presidential race switches into high gear this month with the back-to-back Republican and Democratic party conventions.  Before they became heavily scripted affairs for TV, conventions were where some of the most critical policy questions were resolved, and where political careers were made or ruined. On this episode, we venture into the back rooms, chaotic halls, and streets where these political clashes unfolded. The History Guys bring us the voices of anti-corruption crusaders in the 1820s, women’s rights activists at Seneca Falls, and civil rights workers in 1964 - all of whom turned to conventions to push for change. Through it all, we’ll ask how well American political conventions have lived up to their promise of representing constituents back home. Learn more about your ad choices. They’ll discuss how the Missouri Compromise failed to resolve the political battle over the expansion of slavery. They’ll also look at the war within the Democratic party over Prohibition in the l920’s, and how Southern Democrats used the filibuster to block civil rights bills in the l950’s and 60’s. History textbooks often argue that the United States was founded on the principle of religious freedom, beginning with the Pilgrims who sought refuge from the Church of England. But the America of centuries past was more than a safe haven for religious dissenters. It was also fertile ground for many new religious faiths. In this hour of BackStory, the History Guys will consider religions that originated or transformed in America, from Christian Science to Scientology. They’ll find out how the threat of colonization briefly united 18th-century Native Americans under a single deity, and how the Nation of Islam found converts among African-Americans in the civil rights era. What makes a religion “American”? Why do so many new faiths sprout from American soil? And what role will 21st century America play in the history of religious innovation?
