In this episode of New Frontiers, host Paul Johnson welcomes Mark Meckler, co-founder of the Tea Party Movement and leader of the Convention of States initiative. Joined by Professor Henry Thompson, the discussion dives deep into the push for an Article V Convention, a process that could lead to constitutional amendments aimed at reshaping the federal government.Meckler, a key figure in conservative grassroots activism, explains why he believes Washington is broken and how state-led initiatives could be the solution. From term limits to balancing the budget, the conversation covers the motivations, legal challenges, and opposition to the Convention of States. Paul Johnson challenges Meckler on key issues, exploring whether such a movement could be dangerous, effective, or necessary for America's future.

Andrew Horning's day job is cardiodiagnostic technology. He's worked in public health, cardiac research, clinical, education and industry roles since 1977. However, much of what was earned in professional endeavors has been blown on thirty years of quixotic political campaigns, protests, activism and lawsuits against a two-headed political monster. His political candidacies for Indiana Governor, US Senate and House of Representatives have been mostly under the Libertarian Party banner. But in 2004 Horning won the GOP primary election against the party's slate for US House of Representatives, and it's likely that he also won the general election (if only counting living voters). – Horning's campaign team documented significant election fraud using simple retrospective analysis of abandoned homes and voting records that year, which won some notice of the district's shenanigans from out-of-state newspapers such as The Wall Street Journal and Chicago Tribune. A tax protest led by Horning on July 4, 2007, also earned national media, and has been credited with both a turnover of the Indianapolis city government, and a kick start to the “Tea Party Movement.” Horning is a former weekly columnist for Indiana's biggest daily newspaper, and an Adjunct Scholar with the Indiana Policy Review Foundation. He's also a passionate advocate for asimina triloba, the Indiana Banana, or American Pawpaw. He is most happy when ensconced in his life of family and never-ending projects on a small farm in middle-of-nowhere Freedom, Indiana. Two fishable creeks, an occasionally stocked pond, and of course woods filled with pawpaws over comfortably hilly terrain, make it a hillbilly paradise from which he hopes to stimulate a Peaceful Revolution of Liberty and Justice…for All." https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BJ46CHG5 campaign website is: https://horningforsenate.com/

On this edition of Parallax Views, New York Times bestselling author and investigative journalist Christopher Leonard joins us to discuss his new book The Lords of Easy Money: How the Federal Reserve Broke the American Economy. The book chronicles how the Federal Reserve under Ben Bernanke dealt with the 2008 Global Financial Crisis and its aftermath from 2010-2014. In doing so he attempts to offer a concise and highly critical examination of the policy known as quantitative easing and makes the case that quantitative easing has enriched the wealthy at the expense of the working and middle classes through a form of hyper-trickle-down economics. Leonard and I begin the conversation by discussing his earlier works The Meat Racket: The Secret Takeover of America's Food Business and Kochland: The Secret History of Koch Industries and Corporate Power in America. We then discuss how his critical examination of the Federal Reserve departs from many of the criticisms of the Fed from libertarians and the right such as G. Edward Griffin's The Creature from Jekyll Island. Leonard also praises William Greider's seminal work on the subject Secrets of the Temple. From there we delve into what the Federal Reserve is, what it isn't, and the question of whether it is a public or private institution as well as the ways the Fed, and monetary policy in general, is often treated as being too mystical for a layperson to understand (even if this is not the case). Leonard also explains the concept of quantitative easing and how it has, he argues, enriched the wealthy at the expense of the working and middle classes. Among the many other topics, we cover in the conversation: the Federal Reserve and the Tea Party Movement in November 2010, the story of former President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City Thomas Hoenig's dissenting from Ben Bernanke's quantitative easing policies, Alan Greenspan and ideology within the institution of the Federal Reserve, the populist William Jennings Bryan and his "Cross of Gold" speech, Bill Clinton and the declaration he made during his Presidency that "the era of big government is over", hyper-trickle-down economics, Andrew Mellon, and much, much more!

Political Scientist Heath Brown's new book, Homeschooling the Right: How Conservative Education Activism Erodes the State (Columbia UP, 2021) is an excellent overview of the homeschooling movement in the United States, but it is much more than an exploration of that movement, since it centers on the way that this movement developed into a parallel political structure within states and localities with substantial capacity to influence policy and politics. Brown notes that initially the homeschool movement was ideologically diverse, but that over the past forty years it has become much more directly connected to conservative politics and the Religious Right. As parents chose to opt out of public education and provide education for their children at home, an entire industry grew up around this undertaking, providing, in the pre-internet days, support, content, approaches, and the means to help parents negotiate this at home. Along the way, as this movement continued to grow and expand, even though it was composed of only a fraction of school-age children, it also became a politically vocal movement, with lobbyists who worked on behalf of homeschoolers to keep government intrusion and regulation at bay.  These threads came together and helped to mobilize the members of the homeschool movement. Brown argues that the ideology and the political dimensions of the homeschool movement ultimately migrated over to the Tea Party Movement that takes root in the first decade of the 21st century, since the homeschool ideas are pulling together conservative libertarianism in the anti-government, anti-regulatory vein, and the reintegration of Christian beliefs within academic settings. As we discussed the book, Brown noted that every Republican presidential candidate over the past two decades has paid attention to the homeschool movement, and that President George W. Bush made a point of thanking the homeschool parents and children who had worked so diligently on his campaign and with the GOP Get Out The Vote efforts, since the homeschool students were able to fold these experiences into their curriculum and assignments. The Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), which developed to provide legal support for home school advocates across the states, had initially become a key player in conservative politics, but has now refocused much more narrowly, specifically on homeschool policy.  Homeschooling the Right also gets at the complicated position of the homeschool movement within a democracy, since the movement itself is a way of removing the individual or the family from the public sphere. What is ironic, and important to understand, as Brown notes, is that this political movement has a louder, heightened political voice because of the capacity to mobilize many of its adherents, thus it is both actively inside and outside the political sphere. This is a wonderfully written book and so accessible to readers—and it will be of interest to many across a broad spectrum of disciplines. Lilly J. Goren is professor of political science at Carroll University in Waukesha, WI. Political Scientist Heath Brown’s new book, Homeschooling the Right: How Conservative Education Activism Erodes the State (Columbia UP, 2021) is an excellent overview of the homeschooling movement in the United States, but it is much more than an exploration of that movement, since it centers on the way that this movement developed into a parallel political structure within states and localities with substantial capacity to influence policy and politics. Lilly J. It is little surprise, then, that adjusting for inflation, retail sales last month contracted at nearly a 5 per cent annual pace, while the proportion of Americans living in poverty soared. This is a modern day depression, only this time soup lines have been replaced by unemployment cheques. Facing these challenges, businesses are trying to enhance productivity, not create jobs. Polls show that business leaders are growing increasingly pessimistic. In the past six months a third of companies have delayed or cancelled plans for capital spending.
