Matthew Syed continues his four-part mini series exploring the ethics of space exploration, by returning to the origins of the space race, which saw America and the USSR battling for supremacy. He takes a hard look into the reasons why we go to space and whether it has really benefited all humankind. When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon in July 1969, humanity as a whole felt like we'd reached a new frontier. The two astronauts left a plaque behind them, at the bottom of their lunar module. It said “we came in peace for all mankind”. But while Armstrong and Aldrin were ambassadors of the entire species, it was an American flag which was planted on the surface of the moon. Robert Stone (1937-2015), author of “Dog Soldiers,” “A Flag for Sunrise” and “Damascus Gate,” in conversation with Richard Wolinsky, recorded in the KPFA studios on January 25, 2007 during the book tour for  his memoir, “Prime Green: Remembering the Sixties.” Robert Stone, who died on January 10th, 2015 at the age of 77, won the National Book Award in 1975 for his novel Dog Soldiers and was a finalist four other times, and twice was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Among his other books were the critically acclaimed A Flag for Sunrise, set in war-torn Central America, and Damascus Gate, set in the conflicted city of Jerusalem. His memoir, Prime Green: Remembering the Sixties, is one of the best books written about the counterculture. Robert Stone's books tend to have complicated characters existing during complex political and social turmoil. Two of his books became films, Hall of Mirrors became WUSA, and Dog Soldiers became Who'll Stop the Rain, an excellent film that was dumped by the studio. Following the interview, only three books were published. In 2010 it was a collection of short stories referred to in the interview, Fun with Problems. The novel Death of the Black Haired Girl, was published in 2013, and a collection of non-fiction The Eye You See With, was published posthumously in 2020. Interview from 2003. Former Etowah baseball star Drew Waters returned to Eagle Peak on Tuesday to see his No. 7 jersey retired by the program. The Kansas City Royals outfielder helped lead the Eagles to the 2017 Class AAAAAAA state championship, then was selected 41st overall by the Atlanta Braves in that summer's draft. Waters was named the Cherokee County Player of the Year as a senior in 2017. He hit .510 with 15 home runs and 41 RBIs before also earning the Gatorade Georgia Player of the Year. In the 2017 draft, Waters became the highest-drafted high school player in Cherokee County history. Waters stayed after the ceremony to sign autographs and chat with fans, while also taking in the preseason scrimmage against Marist. He spent time pre-game with the current players and worked out with the current generation of Eagles, one year after they were the Class AAAAAAA runners-up. After heading to Kansas City in a July trade last year, Waters made his major league debut Aug. 22 and went on to appear in 32 games, batting .240 with six doubles, five home runs and 18 RBIs. Local government leaders in Cherokee County and the cities of Holly Springs and Woodstock are working together to create an area plan for future development at the Interstate 575 and Sixes Road interchange, the county announced. The area in question consists of about 100 acres in the southeast quadrant of the interchange. The land is divided among the two cities and the county jurisdictions. All three governmental entities' comprehensive land use plans show the parcels as potential regional center and employment opportunities. To this end, county commissioners unanimously approved a 45-day moratorium Tuesday on the acceptance of any new applications related to rezoning, development or construction in the I-575 and Sixes Road Interchange area. Holly Springs City Council members are asking county officials to reject a company's application for a proposed storage facility at North Rope Mill Road in unincorporated Cherokee County near the city. The city council voted Monday to recommend to county commissioners that they deny a rezoning request for property in unincorporated Cherokee County within the Holly Springs growth boundary area. The property in question is at 624 North Rope Mill Road, near Sixes Road. The request from Robert Stone is to rezone 11.1 acres from single family residential to light industrial with concurrent variances for an outdoor storage facility for boats and recreational vehicles. The parcel lies within an area that Holly Springs, Woodstock and Cherokee County officials have identified as a potential jobs center, and Holly Springs and Cherokee County have passed moratoriums on new applications for the area. City staff will send a letter to the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners expressing the city council's concerns regarding the proposed rezoning, Holly Springs City Manager Rob Logan said Wednesday. The application is scheduled to be on the Cherokee County Planning Commission agenda in March. The city council also discussed an intergovernmental agreement with Cherokee County to conduct the city's election. The city council will vote on this agreement at the Feb. 23 meeting. A new active adult apartment complex has opened for residents ages 55 and up in the Riverstone area in Canton. The Westcott consists of 120 one and two-bedroom units at 137 Reinhardt College Parkway in Canton. The project, developed by Meridian Development & Construction Services, consists of 4.28 acres and a single four story, 167,000 square foot building. According to Meridian Development, amenities include a resident lounge with double-sided fireplace and multiple seating areas, indoor and outdoor gathering places, a heated salt-water pool with sundeck and cabana area, a pavilion with community barbecues, a fire pit, bocce court and putting green, a fitness center, dog spa, a Sky Lounge with both indoor and outdoor seating and fireplace, a beer, wine and spirits tap/self-pour system at three separate locations within the development, a private courtyard and themed men's and women's event rooms. The staff includes a full-time enrichment director who will coordinate resident activities onsite and travel events to surrounding points of interest including hiking, museum visits, sporting events, cultural programs and more. Dennis Stone is the president of America's Stonehenge. He graduated from Daniel Webster College in 1977 with a degree in Aviation Management, and was a full-time commercial pilot for over 35 years before his retirement in 2016. America's Stonehenge was opened to the public in 1958 by Dennis's father, Robert Stone. Dennis has been involved with America's Stonehenge for most of his life and has always had a fascination with archaeology and archaeoastronomy. Since retiring, Dennis has found many serpentine walls and spirit windows throughout the site, among other new discoveries. He has taken numerous courses and traveled extensively to ancient sites both in the U.S. and internationally. His family includes his wife Pat, his son Kelsey, and his daughter-in-law Katherine.
