Ep. 36: Sharing Vulnerability & Growing Together: Jason MacKenzie | No Schedule Man Podcast

Jason MacKenzie, an author, speaker & coach who teaches people how to find the courage to create new and deeper relationships with people, including their kids. And if they want to use those relationships to power personal and professional growth, he shows them how to do that too. Jason is a survivor of his first wife’s battle with bipolar disorder and subsequent suicide. He’s also overcome a decade-long battle with alcohol and eventually stopped running from grief and fear, which allowed him to become the husband and father he is today. After creating a website called "The Book of Open" to share his own gratitude journals, his efforts soon evolved into one of encouraging and empowering others to share their stories through his site. As Jason went on curating and connecting the experiences of others, the project caught the attention of Hogan Hilling, who approached him about writing a book. That turned into “The Dadly Book of Open: How Cultivating Vulnerability Makes You a Stronger, Wiser & More Courageous Father.” Some of the key things to listen for include: 1. Growing Together – We discuss this at a few different points in the conversation, related not just to parents with their kids, but with their parents as well. As the generations turn and learn, we are all growing together. 2. You will know when it is time for you to know - His description of the peace and the clarity of the moment when he knew he was done drinking is a great example of how, with any large, looming issue in your life that you’re not sure how to handle, you will know when it’s time. You’ll just know. And when that time arrives, you’ll know it. 3. The power of vulnerability - Authentically sharing our true selves with others almost never pushes others away. It has the reverse effect: it almost always brings us closer together. When someone else shares and listens with authenticity, non-judgement and kindness, there is no greater way to deepen or create a connection with another human being. Jason has discovered this and you’ll clearly hear that in this discussion. 4. Perseverance - He does a terrific job of describing the process of actually creating the book and what it took. Listen to that carefully because it's an important lesson for just about anything that you do in life ©2017 Kevin Bulmer Enterprises

Diversity Dad podcast - Helping dads to “buck conventionally” and celebrate doing fatherhood differently.

Hogan Hilling –Show Notes Hogan Hilling is a father of three and a nationally recognized author who has published 8 books regarding fatherhood. This has led him to create the “Dadly Series.” Hogan was also invited to the Oprah Winfrey Show to talk about being an at-home dad with his disabled son. He is also creating the “Dadly Rally” which gathers dads to talk about fatherhood. Hogan believes he is a Diversity Dad because of a number of reasons. His single mother raised him, after his parents divorced when he was two years old. He moved from Brazil to the Netherlands with his mom and brother, and reunited with his own father after 27 years of separation. Hogan is a dad of a child with special needs, Wesley, and went through a divorce after 25 years of marriage. As a father advocate, he says he has worked with almost every type of father there is. “I’ve had a wealth of experience and a wealth of supportive dads in my social circle” Hogan believes the biggest challenge he has had is fighting the stigma that our culture has created about men being inept, irresponsible and incompetent parents. He’s had financial struggles due to the large medical bills for his son, as well as the emotional challenge faced when people didn’t see his son as a human being. Hogan says his son has taught him a lot about life.   “Embrace the special gift your child has, and support the passion that they have for the life that they want to live”   He believes the community embraced him because of his attitude towards Wesley.   ”I asked for them to embrace him not because they had to, but because they wanted to being mindful about spending time with all of his kids is the one thing that he is most excited about making every second and minute I spent with my kids count.’   “Hogan says he looks at fatherhood through the eyes of his children.”   “That’s the part of being mindful; nothing else matters. One of the things I feel best about as a father, is on my deathbed, I’ll never say that I wish I spent more time with my kids.” Appearing on Oprah was one of his proudest moments because he got the opportunity to share his parent experience with others. Hogan never dreamt of being an author, but says it just fell in his lap. Every day he would write in his journal about a happy moment, or something he learned from his kids. Someone suggested he turn his writings into a book. He believes that parents unfortunately tend to focus on the negative aspects of being a parent, because they feel that without drama, they’re not normal.   “People are so engrossed in the challenges of raising a child, and not looking at the joys.”   “His one piece of advice is that people set their ego aside, and ask for help from others dads.”   “If you’d like a father-friendly environment, act like a friendly father, especially to other dads.”   The Dadly Rally is debuting in Marc 2016 (Los Angeles), but they Hogan and his partners want to go nationwide within 5 years (see INTERVIEW LINKS). The people involved want to leave a better parenting legacy for kids.   INTERVIEW LINKS   www.DadlyRally.com   Hogan@DadlyRally.com (Email)     Appearing on Oprah was one of his proudest moments because he got the opportunity to share his parent experience with others.   CLICK HERE to leave a Rating & Review on iTunes Please welcome Hogan Hilling to the We RAD DADS podcast! Hogan has seen some hard times and weathered many storms as a dad. One might think this would have made him gruff, harsh and negative however Hogan has used his experiences to enlighten others on how dads can be extremely valuable parental figures. He has personally challenged the common paradigm that dads can't parent. Not only has Hogan been a stay-at home dad care taking his three children, one of which a child with special needs; he has endured a bitter and insulting divorce that left him at the mercy of the judicial system slanted toward one particular gender. Through all of this Hogan has remained calm and collected, consistently putting first what matters most. Hogan is the creator of the Dadly Rally and is a champion for dad's equality in parenting. True to his character, Hogan does not discriminate against any parent due to gender and welcomes involved women parents into the Dadly cause as well. He is a true example for each of us to follow! Listen to our conversation as we discuss Hogan's winding path through life involving rediscovering his own dad as an adult and what he learned when they connected. Hogan Hilling is back again discussing about his new release, "Dads Behaving Dadly: 67 Truths, Tears and Triumph of Modern Fatherhood." More and more fathers are asserting themselves and actively taking part in changing diapers, attending doctor’s appointments, participating in PTA meetings and helping with homework. In short, fatherhood is alive and well! We have seen the dramatic shift into to modern fatherhood. In fact, we have lived it. Hogan became a stay-at-home dad in 1992 and quickly became an advocate for involved fatherhood. He wrote articles, led workshops for fathers at local hospitals, spoke to corporations about the advantages of being an involved father and published many self-help parenting books. Al became a stay-at-home dad in 2002 and soon after joined the National At-Home Dad Network, eventually rising to be its President in 2011. He wrote many blog posts about life as a stay-at-home dad and revealed to parents and brands on social media the truths about the capabilities and desires of fathers in the 21st century. The image of fatherhood, however, has not changed much despite the reality we have lived and witnessed in the thousands of fathers we have met. We decided to change that and in 2012 launched a book project we titled “Dads Behaving DADLY.” The mission of the book project was to reveal the truths, tears and triumphs of modern fatherhood we had heard for years to a public that had yet to completely change its opinion of dads as bumbling, incompetent parents.
